Curriculum

International Baccalaureate

Middle Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) is an educational programme intended for students aged approximately 11 to 16 (grades 6-10 in International Schools, the United States, Canada and Australia). Thus, in the United States the programme is often taught throughout the middle school years and the first two years of high school. Typically, middle schools and high schools work in coordination with each other when the programme can not be entirely hosted within one combined school. However, Willams Middle School, in Tampa, Florida and later, Herbert Ammons Middle School, Miami, Florida, have been granted the authority to host the a full MYP curriculum in only grades 6, 7, and 8. The full programme lasts 5 years although more limited programmes can be adopted with permission from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). Official MYP documentation is available from the IBO in English, French, Spanish and Chinese.

The IBO contends that the MYP programme naturally prepares students for the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and there are significant parallels in structure and philosophy.

Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is an educational programme examined in one of three languages (English, French or Spanish) and is a university entrance course. It is taught in 2,075 schools, often in international schools, in 125 countries (as of 2007). More than half of the schools offering the Diploma Programme are state funded schools. The programme, administered by the International Baccalaureate Organization, is the most widely recognized pre-university educational programme. However, it remains less popular than nationally affiliated preparatory programs in most countries, such as that of the Advanced Placement examination system in the United States, the A-level in the United Kingdom, the HSC (higher school certificate) in Australia or Advanced Highers system in Scotland.

Notable Extracurricular Activities

Marching Band

The marching band, known as the Marching Trojans, had faced a major decline in the past few years, but is on their way back up. After several years (1999–2001) of placing in the semi-finals at state competition,[citation needed] the band had slipped in rankings, not even qualifying for state competition during the 2005 season. In 2006 they took 1st in the Greeley Marching Invitational and 18th overall at the state competition.[citation needed] The band rose in the rankings slowly doing better through 2007 when at the end of that school year, their band director, Jared Crump-Bertram, left Thornton High School for personal reasons.[citation needed]. As of the 2010-2011 school year, Jared Crump-Bertram has returned, and the marching band is slowly on its way back up, its biggest struggle being that only the senior class knew much about marching competitively from their freshman year, so it was starting with an almost entirely blank slate.

Choir

Thornton High School's Choir Department is the most student-attended department in the school and, under the direction of Sherri Goodwin (with both vocal performance and education degrees), has been consistently successful at the annual University of Northern Colorado at Greely Jazz Festival. Men's and Women's Select choirs, in conjuncture with Vocal Jazz, form the ensembles that perform at such events. The Chorales, Men's, and Women's choirs annually perform musicals in the spring. They have been rated as the best in northern Colorado for the past 4 years.

Drama

In the 2010-2011 school year, under the direction of the fantabulous Denise Connolly, the drama department performed Macbeth and Sweeney Todd. The spring play is Arsenic and Old Lace followed by The Pony Espresso .. or ... The Villain Came to a Grinding Halt.

For the 2007-2008 school year, they put on performances of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit and Private Lives. They shot a movie called Friends Forever, written by a former student.[citation needed] Their musical for the 2007-2008 year was originally going to be Godspell, but because of religious issues,[citation needed] was changed to Once Upon A Mattress in mid-march. The set for this performance took third place in a set-building contest and was built entirely without professional help.[citation needed] Their One-Act/Ten-Minute Plays were Friday, April 4, 2008 and their melodrama "D.K. Molar The Devious Dentist" was shown later in May which was directed by Chris Deaguero.

Their musicals the in 2006 and 2007 have been The Pajama Game and Little Shop of Horrors, respectively.

In 2009-2010, the drama department was headed by teacher Jill Becker who put on the performances of Footloose for the musical, To Kill a Mocking Bird, and Hamlet. In 2009 the drama department got a new set builder named Jessica Seitz, who also co-directed Hamlet. The Melodrama for 2009-2010 Year was Directed by Peggy Smith. Peggy Smith has been the costume designer for over 20 years. The most recent head of the drama department is Denise Connolly, who took a new approach to the department and it's participants.

Carl Morrow was a teacher at Thornton High School in the the English Department and also was the teacher for Drama I and Drama II. Carl Morrow had been the head of the Drama Department for many years up until he retired in the school year of 2008-2009.
