Series 1 (Season 1 and 2)

During what seems to be a routine attack on Dr. Eggman's headquarters to rescue Cream the Rabbit and Cheese the Chao, Sonic and his friends are caught in a massive and mysterious explosion that transports them to what, at first, appears to be another dimension. Separated from his friends, Sonic eventually finds himself in custody of a boy named Christopher Thorndyke, who saves Sonic's life after he nearly drowns in his pool. Chris lives in a lavish mansion, funded by his two celebrity parents, with his Grandfather, Chuck. Chris aids Sonic in locating his friends, and it is not long before Dr. Eggman makes his presence known. As Sonic and Eggman race to collect all the Chaos Emeralds (Sonic wants to use them to get home to his own dimension, and Eggman wants to use them to conquer this new world), Chris must deal with the mental problems associated with having parents that are too busy to take care of him. When Grandpa Chuck invents a dimensional portal to send Sonic home, Chris kidnaps Sonic, because he does not want Sonic to abandon him as his feels his parents did. Eventually, with the help of Sonic, Chris comes to terms with his feelings and Sonic returns to his own dimension. However, Chris vows that one day, he will see Sonic again.

Series 2 (Season 3)

It has been many years since Chris let Sonic return to his own dimension. Chris is now nearly an adult, and has been working on repairing his Grandfather's dimensional portal. In Sonic's world, a new girl named Cosmo arrives on Sonic's planet, looking for the legendary one who can wield the powers of the seven Chaos Emeralds. Sonic, having been nearly defeated in outer space by a new enemy called Dark Oak, scatters the Chaos Emeralds across the galaxy, in order to prevent Dark Oak from using their power. When Chris uses the dimensional portal, and he finds himself in Sonic's dimension - but his age has regressed all the way back to the age he was when he first met Sonic; however, Chris still has all his memories of the years he spent repairing the dimensional portal. Chris learns that to Sonic, only six months had passed. During their reunion, Dark Oak and his Metarex Army attack Sonic's planet and steal the "Planet Egg" from it. Without the Planet Egg, all the trees and plants on Sonic's planet wither and die. Sonic and his friends decide that Dark Oak must be stopped, and they venture into space to retrieve the Chaos Emeralds. After many run-ins with Dr. Eggman, and the pursuing Metarex Army, Cosmo's dark secret is eventually unveiled: She has been an unwilling spy for the Metarex all along, and the Metarex themselves are actually part of the same race that Cosmo is from; they have twisted and modified their bodies for combat after war overtook their planet, and now must depend on the energy of the Planet Eggs to stay alive. When the Metarex enact a plan that could destroy the entire Universe, Cosmo sacrifices herself in order to save everybody, much to the disappointment of everyone, especially Tails, who had fallen in love with Cosmo during the course of their adventure. With the Metarex destroyed, Eggman builds an invention that sends Chris home, and Chris accepts. Before being teleported into his home dimension, he sees Sonic running below the teleportal. The two bid each other farewell, and Chris was sent home.

List of characters

Major

File:002sonic.jpg
Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog: The universe's fastest supersonic hedgehog. Since his debut on the 16-bit Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic has become a recognizable icon worldwide. He is very carefree and laid-back, though cannot stand evil, and it would go against his kind nature to not help someone in danger. He utilizes his special trademark abilities, speed, spin attacks, and special Homing Attack to thwart any enemies that may threaten the landscape, including Doctor Eggman and the ruthless Dark Oak. Sonic also has a knack of uttering English wisecracks, such as, "Yes! Here we go!" and "Ready, go!"
File:Tails.jpg
Miles "Tails" Prower
  • Miles "Tails" Prower: Miles met Sonic on Westside Island many years ago, and while the hedgehog did not take much notice of him at first, he was surprised at the young fox's ability to keep up, and allowed him to tag along. From there on up until the incident with the Egg Carrier, the two had been stuck together like superglue. In Sonic X, while Tails is hardly found with Sonic as often as he was and is able to set out on missions by himself, he still holds a special admiration for his once-idol. Tails's most unique feature is the Copter Flight (spinning his tails together like a helicopter and gaining limited flight ability), although in the anime it is rare to see him resort to this ability (which tends to upset some fans of Tails).
File:039knuckles.jpg
Knuckles and the Master Emerald.
  • Knuckles the Echidna: The guardian of the Master Emerald on Angel Island. Knuckles is quite gullible and cannot seem to ever trust Sonic, especially once Dr. Eggman had once tricked him into thinking that Sonic and Tails were the ones after the Master Emerald. Even while Knuckles learned that Dr. Eggman was the true enemy and not Sonic, he still holds some resentment toward him. Sometimes he gets carried away showing off and trying prove he is better than his blue rival. Throughout the first season of Sonic X, Knuckles prefers to wander by himself. His special abilities include Glide Grind, Wall Climb, and Dig, most utilizing his special spiky knuckles. Like Tails, there has been some criticism involving Knuckles, as the show portrays him as much weaker than he is in the games. In the third season, two of the spikes on his fists are broken in a fight with a robot, but they are fine in the next episode.
Amy Rose using her Piko Piko Hammer.
  • Amy Rose: A female hedgehog, who has self-claimed herself as Sonic's girlfriend. Once nicknamed "Rosy the Rascal," most notably in Sonic the Fighters, and mistakenly once known as "Princess Sally" (an entirely different character) in the U.S. Sonic the Hedgehog CD game manual. She and Sonic first crossed paths on "The Miracle Planet", where Sonic sabotaged Dr. Eggman's plan of clutching the Little Planet as a massive metallic base with the power of the seven Time Stones. Ever since, Amy has followed Sonic (much to his dismay) and will never let him go, regardless of his awkward feelings towards her. At one point, the two of them actually share some common ground on their feelings for one another, but it seems to be short-lived... Her primary weapon is the Piko-Piko Hammer, which she seems to retain an unlimited amount of and can seemingly pull out of nowhere.
  • Cream the Rabbit: A friendly young rabbit who is very polite towards her friends. Because of her age, the older characters tend to look after her in almost every situation, and she mainly spends her time watching television in Chris's mansion to keep out of danger. At first she is not able to defend herself at all during battles. Later, however, she learns to utilize her two massive ears for flight, as well as use her best friend, Cheese the Chao, in a missile attack. She seems to always be polite, including calling her enemy Mr. Dr. Eggman. Her other best friend is Amy.
File:Shadow-SonicX38.jpg
Shadow the Hedgehog.
  • Shadow the Hedgehog: A black, solemn hedgehog who claims to be the "Ultimate Lifeform." Created over fifty years ago aboard the Space Colony ARK by Professor Gerald Robotnik, Shadow had remained in the captivity of G.U.N. until Dr. Eggman, Gerald's heir, awakened him. Shadow began to wreak havoc in Central City, which led the government to believe that Sonic was the one committing these crimes, due to his so-called similar appearance. Eventually, Shadow realizes his memory had failed him, and with Sonic helps destroy the Eclipse Cannon to prevent the annihilation of Earth. Recently, Shadow has been seen to team up with Dr. Eggman, though he assists both sides depending on the situation. Shadow's special abilities are exactly the same as Sonic's, ranging from speed to spin attacks, as well as an energy attack called 'Chaos Spear'. However, he recently has had a liking to long-range weapons to avoid as much trouble as possible. As to the rest of his past, no one quite knows...
File:Shadowrouge.jpg
Shadow and Rouge.
  • Rouge the Bat: A government agent, white-haired bat who is infatuated with jewels. She tends to work for herself and conceals personal details. Her past remains a mystery to this day. Her special abilities include Glide Grind and Screw Kick, an extremely powerful maneuver which can pierce the strongest of materials, including Dark Oak's machines. Usually viewed as a self-centered bat, she actually has a crush on certain dreadlocked echinda...
File:026eggman.jpg
Dr. Eggman.
  • Dr. Eggman: A very determined villain set on collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds and destroying Sonic for good. At the failure of conquering both South Island or Westside Island, Dr. Eggman built his own doomsday machine known as the Death Egg, which failed on two consecutive occasions. Ever since, Dr. Eggman has depended on other forms of attack not necessarily conceived by himself: A mysterious water creature named Chaos, Shadow, and his own grandfather's doomsday device, the Eclipse Cannon. His IQ is said to be 300, although he acts quite immature. As to his past, it's quite uncertain when and why Sonic and he started this never-ending conflict. This version of Eggman is by far the least evil. In episode 26 once he had all the Chaos Emeralds he actually felt bad when his new robot was kicking Sonic about the place.

Blaze the cat

File:Blaze the Cat.JPG
Blaze the Cat
Blaze is said to be in hte next season of Sonic x.

Blaze the cat is a female cat from another dimension. She can control Fire and she is a bit mysterious. She feels as if she has to carry the responsibility of her world on her shoulders. Blaze isnt freindly or feels that she can trust someone, but thta might change. She is normally calm but when her sol emeralds got stolen she seems to be mildly tempered. Although it hasn't been confirmed sience Blaze has a super form and is the only Female character with one due to her popularity she might be on sonic x season4.

Minor

  • Big the Cat: A huge cat who likes fishing.
  • Chaotix: Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon and Charmy Bee make up this gang of crack detectives.
  • Vanilla the Rabbit: Cream's kind mother.
  • Zero: A robot that tries to capture Amy's blue flicky. He resembles a trash can with arms.
  • E-101 Beta: Member of the E-Series. He took up a lot of Zeta's roles in the Sonic Adventure saga and was able to talk. He had a grey Flicky inside him.
  • E-102 Gamma: Member of the E-Series. He betrayed Eggman and destroyed his brothers, but died in the process. He had a pink Flicky inside him.
  • E-103 Delta: Member of the E-Series. He was the first robot to be destroyed.
  • E-104 Epsilon: Member of the E-Series. He was the second robot to be destroyed.
  • E-105 Zeta: Member of the E-Series. He was the third robot to be destroyed.
  • Chaos: A mysterious, but powerful liquid lifeform that transforms each time he absorbs a Chaos Emerald.
  • Tikal: A mysterious echidna girl who sacrificed her body and trapped herself and Chaos in the Master Emerald, 3000 years ago.
  • Emerl: A cyborg found by Eggman. He's known as Emell in the dub version due to a mistranslated "r". Eggman used Emerl to copy all of his enemies' moves and then get the red Chaos Emerald. Cream defeated Emerl, who fell into the ocean and exploded.

Exclusive characters

Chris Thorndyke
Chris Thorndyke
  • Danny - Chris' friend
  • Bokkun - Acts as Eggman's messenger.
  • Decoe and Bocoe - Two robots that are constantly by Doctor Eggman's side. They once tried to form together in Episode 48, but then realised that they weren't able to do so, much to the dismay of Chris. In Episode 49 they did so in order to summon Bokkun so they can find out where Eggman is.
  • E-Series - Other than the ones established in the games, most E-Series Robots are Sonic X-exclusive and appear constantly, at least for the first 26 episodes. See below for a list of them.
  • Chuck Thorndyke - Chris' grandfather (It is said his name is a reference to SatAM's character, Charles "Chuck" Hedgehog, Sonic's uncle in SatAM).
  • Ella - The Thorndykes' maid
  • Mr. Tanaka - The Thorndykes' butler
  • Topaz - A female GUN agent who befriends Rouge.
  • Nelson and Lindsey Thorndyke - Chris' parents
  • Sam Speed - Leader of the S-Team and Chris' uncle (possibly a nod to American fictional mascot Uncle Sam). In the Japanese version, he has many nicknames, like "Highway Star" and "Love Express", changing them frequently.
  • Francis - Another one of Chris' friends
  • Helen -Handicapped 12 year old. In the future, Helen serves as Christopher Thorndykes' love life.
  • Jerome Wise - At first he tries to prevent the President's reputation from being ruined by Sonic. He gets fired when it was found out that he made a deal with Dr. Eggman and ends up homeless on the streets. Following this incident, one of the show's running gags involves Jerome's attempts to gain money and generally showing him living in squalor.
  • Hawk - One of the very few (if not the only) human that Knuckles actually develops a close friendship with. Knuckles rescues Hawk from being crushed to death in a temple and stays with him for a time while searching for the Chaos Emerald. Hawk repays the favour by taking out E91 and, instead of selling it as he originally planned, gives the Chaos Emerald to Knuckles.

Series 2 (Season 3)

File:Season3pan.jpg

In late 2004, Production Sketches of a supposed "Sonic X Series 2" began turning up. Many considered these model sheets, storyboards, and episode scripts to be nothing more than a fan-made hoax, as neither Sega nor TMS had officially announced any continuation of Sonic X beyond the original 52 episode series. It wasn't until early 2005, when Jetix France began to air the second series (shortly followed by another station located in Taiwan), that it was confirmed that a 26 episode "Series 2" had been produced. On September 10, 2005, 4Kids Entertainment began to air "Series 2" (calling it "Season 3"). Shortly afterwards, the United Kingdom version of Jetix in November, and a month later, Australia followed suit. Despite being created in Japan, and even dubbed into Japanese originally, the 26 new episodes that make up "Series 2" have not yet aired on TV-Tokyo, the network that ran the original 52 episode series.

Currently, the only way to view "Series 2" in it's original native language (Japanese) is to purchase bootleg DVDs, which feature Japanese (and sometimes French) dialogue, often times with Chinese subtitles. This bootleg DVD uses the second version of the Japanese opening theme, "Sonic Drive", and the second version of the Japanese ending theme, "The Shining Road".

New Characters

File:Cosmo-Sonic X.gif
Cosmo
  • Cosmo - A female alien/plant hybrid that is the last survivor of her species, come to get Sonic's help. She forms a bond with Tails, eventually falling in love with him.
Dark Oak, the Metarex Leader.
  • Dark Oak - The evil leader of the Metarex, capable of challenging even the power of Super Sonic. Wields a large sword.
  • The Metarex - An intergalactic army that scours the galaxy for the life forces of planets, as well as for objects of great power.

Thematic Differences

Template:Spoiler

One major difference between "Series 1" and "Series 2" is the fact that "Series 2" is considerably darker and more mature in tone. Many characters sustain serious, nearly-fatal injuries, and several characters even die; such as Cosmo's death during the final episodes of "Series 2". In the end, Tails himself, overcome with emotion, is ultimately forced to kill her at her own request. In addition, in the final episode, Shadow appeared to have disappear as well but no one was 100% sure of what happened to him. It appears, though, in the French/Japanese (and probably many other un-4kids hosted regions) that Shadow was alive. He is seen as a shadow by Molly's grave, which was cut out in the 4Kids dub, with a rose. Simply put, there is no indication that any of the deaths in the series were ever reversed or negated. However, because of it's darker tone, 4Kids Entertainment has removed many of the more intense scenes in compliance with their Children's Programming editing standards making some fans frustrated at the way the English Version of the Show turned out.

"Series 2" does not adapt episodes from any of the games, unlike "Series 1." Also, rather than focusing on miniature "sagas" and sub-plots, the majority of "Series 2" focuses on one single plot involving the Metarex and Cosmo's origins.

Who is Nazo?

File:Nazo x.jpg
The mysterious Nazo.

When Sonic X was first announced, early screenshots of the show were released with it. The most interesting shot had a mysterious "Super Hedgehog" that looked similar (and different) from Super Sonic. Unlike Super Sonic, this mysterious hedgehog named Nazo (Japanese for "Mystery"), glowed with a blue aura, his quills pointed upward, and has a more wild expression in his eyes. Nazo appeared directly at the end of the Pilot Trailer for Sonic X. But in the end, like a lot of elements that appeared in the Pilot Trailer, Nazo never appeared in the series. However, whatever Nazo was, he continues to be a strong debate among Sonic X fans (Some think he was a "fusion" form between Sonic and Shadow, while others theorized Nazo as Hyper Sonic or Shadow, or possibly a new higher Super form of Sonic or Shadow, or an entirely new character in Super or Hyper form). The Pilot Trailer most likely indicates that Sonic X went through a large number of changes in design and story elements before its debut in Japan (Bocoe and Decoe had different and more simplistic designs, Shadow appears on Eggman's Island Base and an Orange Tornado plane was also eventually changed to the X-Tornado on the show. There is also an earlier Pilot that contains much of the footage used in the first Japanese Intro). Nazo just seems to be a prototype design for Super Sonic. In Series 2, Sonic transforms into "Dark" Super Sonic, an evil version of himself who bears close resemblance to Nazo, furthermore approving the fact that Nazo may just be a prototype of Super Sonic not used in the final version of the show. however, despite this evidence, one key fact outrules this. During the pilot trailer we see Sonic turn into his golden super form, shortly followed by a brief image of Nazo, so it is likely Nazo is a separate character. This makes it seem likely that Sonic powered up to fight Nazo, so he might be a villain. A new character, Silver the Hedgehog, from the Sonic Next-gen video game, looks swomewhat similar to Nazo.

Season 4?

File:Blaze the Cat.JPG
Blaze the Cat

On an interesting note, rumors have begun floating around about a fourth season (third series) of Sonic X currently in development, which will apparently delve deep into the history of the Chaos Emeralds--potentially revealing what the true purpose of the enigmatic Nazo could be. However there is no proof from Sega that this rumor is true. In fact, after the American end of Sonic X, Season 3 was called a "Season Finale", leading many to believe in a fourth season. On May 16th, 2006, it was confirmed [1] that Sonic X will not be in the American Fall 2006 line up. There still has been no word of a 4th season so far. In this season it could be like sonic rush with all the old characters (Tails,Amy,Sonic,Knuckles,Eggman,Cream and cheese,Rouge because she loves jewels and maybe shadow because different points in time and space is what his past remains to be of Maria) Blaze the cat Eggman nega and maybe Tikal because Blaze said "The Chaos emerlads are they akin to the sol emeralds" which means that if there realated to the chaos emeralds there might be a connection to tikal like she might be a cameo guest star and explain the power of the "Sol emeralds" or the Master Sol emerald (although this is a rumor its not confirmed there is one. Sonic x season 4 would go like sonic rush where Blaze appears and collects all the sol emeralds and then after the fight with sonic and the final boss super Sonic,Super Blaze, and maybe Super Shadow will face the power of Eggman and Eggman nega then at the end Blaze would return to her dimension.

E-Series robots

File:Guerrahard.jpg
Sonic vs. Eggman's Guerra Hard robot.

Note: Some of the E-Series have no codenames stated in the Japanese version of Sonic X. The names given to E-11, E-14, E-23, E-43, E-47, and E-90 in the American dub by 4Kids are the closest one can get for a name until the official source for the Japanese codenames reveals the original names. Also a lot of these look like mecas from Transformers or Gundam.

  • E-11 Beacon: Dr. Eggman summons this robot to accompany him to where a Chaos Emerald has been found. Later seen during the attack on Eggman's base. Seen in Episodes 4 and 12.
  • E-12: Group of large robots that attack Sonic at the beginning of Episode 1. Also attacks Sonic and Tails during a dream Tails is having in Episode 28.
  • E-13: Makes short appearances in Episodes 1, 11, 12, and 13. All they do is attack intruders.
  • E-14 Sneezer: Makes short appearances in Episodes 1, 11, 12, and 13. All they do is attack intruders.
  • E-18 Guerra-Hard: Sonic confonts this powerful E-Series robot inside Dr. Eggman's base. Seen in Episode 13. This robot bares a striking resemblance to Mazinger Z of Go Nagi's series of the same name (even so far as to have the "Egg-o-matic" (Eggman's hover craft) work like Koji's Pilder hover craft). With the power of two emeralds, this robot can be quite a challenge to defeat, even for Sonic.
  • E-21 Ballios: These baseball-playing robots make up Dr. Eggman's "Eggs Team" when a Chaos Emerald is discovered Diamond Stadium. Seen in Episode 10.
  • E-23 Missile Wrist: Attacks Station Square when Dr. Eggman tries to take over the new world for the first time. Seen in Episodes 3 and 11 (flashback only). Also seen during a flashback during the dub version of Episode 39.
  • E-35 Funfun: While Dr. Eggman was away from his base tracking down the most recently discovered Chaos Emerald, he brought along this robot. Funfun has a powerful fan installed in him that is capable of blowing his opponents away. Seen in Episodes 12 and 13.
  • E-38 Octoron: Causes havok at Emerald Coast. Seen in Episode 9.
  • E-39 Quizon: These robots construct a theme park called "Eggman's Scream Park" (or rather, "Eggman's Sea Park" in the Japanese version) in place of Hotel de Blanc at Emerald Coast. They eventually combine themselves into one gigantic robot (called "Serpenter" in the dub). Seen in Episode 9.
  • E-42 Torole: These robots show up to wreak everything in sight once Dr. Eggman's recently launched Egg Fort arrives at the mall. Seen in Episode 15.
  • E-43 Falcon: These robots appear and attack Sonic when he shows up to stop the Egg Fort for the first time. Seen in Episode 15.
  • E-45 Sumo-Man: He basically acts as a road block during a race between Sonic and Sam Speed. They both manage to get pass him, however. Seen in Episode 21.
  • E-47 Pumpty: Captures Sonic's friends while Sonic is out fighting Knuckles. Seen in Episode 5.
  • E-51 Intelligente (pronounced In-tella-hen-tay): He takes over Chris's class as the new teacher and enjoys teaching the children. He refuses to follow Dr. Eggman's orders until Eggman shows up in person, threatening to dismantle him. Seen in Episode 6.
  • E-57 Clurken: Attacks Sonic and friends when a Chaos Emerald has been found under the ocean. Seen in Episode 16.
  • E-65 Gorru-Gaooh: Attacks Sonic while he is in Africa with Chris and Tails. Seen in Episode 18.
  • E-66 Da-Dai-Oh: Attacks Sonic's friends at a Chao colony, tracking mud into the river in the process. Seen in Episode 22.
  • E-70 Noizi: Guards the Chaos Emerald Dr. Eggman stole at Diamond Stadium. He is capable of making loud deafening noises. Seen in Episode 11.
  • E-74 Weazo: Attacks Sonic and friends in a movie studio once yet another Chaos Emerald has been found. Seen in Episode 23.
  • E-77 Lucky: Dr. Eggman sends out this robot to look for the final Chaos Emerald. He is made out of lucky charms, but his type of luck appears to be dumb luck. He is last seen fighting in a martial arts tournament held by the President. Seen in Episodes 25, 26, 45 and 46.
  • E-88 Lightning Bird: Attacks Sonic at a farm. A piece of him falls into Sonic's ear for quite a while. Seen in Episode 24.
  • E-90 Super Sweeper: This robot sucks up all the satellites in space so Dr. Eggman can launch his television channel. It bears a significant resemblance to Thunderbird 2 from Thunderbirds.
  • E-91 Ku-no-i-chi: The only female E-Series robot. She is a ninja robot. Quoted from Dr. Eggman in the Japanese version of Sonic X, "Sometimes she’s a driver, sometimes she’s a female guard, and sometimes she’s a sexy dancer... but her true identity is E-91, Ku-no-i-chi!". This, incidentally is reffrence to the anime sereis Cutie Honey where Honey's speech was almost exactly like that (Sexy Dancer included!). On a side note, Ku-no-i-chi's name is roughly translated out to "Lady Ninja." Seen in Episode 17.
  • E-99 Eggsterminator: A highly massive E-Series robot that is a re-formation of the Egg Fort 2. Using the power of the Chaos Emeralds, he is able to move faster than Sonic himself. He eventually went out of Eggman's control and started brutally attacking Sonic. Ultimately, E-99 was destroyed by Super Sonic. He is certainly a very worthy opponent. Seen in Episode 26 (Note: In the Japanese version, E-99's codename is "Egg Emperor." This name clashes with the final boss of the individual teams' stories in Sonic Heroes. The name "Eggsterminator" is used because it was the name given in the dub).

Comic Book Series

In September 2005, Archie Comics, publishers of the North American Sonic the Hedgehog comics started a Sonic X comic book series based on Sonic X. According to writer Joe Edkin, the first nine issues will take place in the TV continuity between episodes 32 and 33, which falls between the Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 story lines. After this, the stories' chronological positions will vary for some time. Issue 16 will take place between episodes 46 and 47, right after the Sonic Battle storyline; future issues through at least 2009 will probably occur in this same time period. It should also be noted that this series is based off the 4Kids English version.

Toy line

The 4Kids version of the show was backed up by a toyline. The early figures in this line were in fact re-releases of an earlier Sonic Adventure toyline, criticised by many for awkward poses and poor sculpting. The line has currently moved onto more accurate and updated figures. Taking a concept from the popular Marvel Legends toys, one wave presents each of the 5 characters in it with part of a generic E-Series robot. Fans who buy the whole wave can complete the robot as a 'bonus' figure.

Criticisms of 4Kids version

Like many other 4Kids productions, their version of Sonic X has been met with critical reaction regarding editing some of the more intense scenes and dialogue to make the series more child-friendly (This also applies to other 4Kids dubs). Additionally it is known that the voice actor from the Sonic games, Ryan Drummond, offered to voice Sonic for the dub - but was refused by 4Kids for not living in New York (it has also been said that Drummond even offered to re-locate to New York, and was still refused). This eventually lead to Drummond being removed (without notification) as the voice actor for the Sonic games, after Sega replaced the entire voice cast for the games with the 4Kids cast following the death of Deem Bristow, the game voice actor for Dr. Eggman.

This is in contrast to the Japanese original, which (ironically) has always shared a unified voice cast between the games and the anime. As is standard practice for 4Kids licenses, all of the music in Sonic X was replaced with new music, created by their in-house composer to cut licensing costs. This even meant removing Live and Learn, the headline song from Sonic Adventure 2, which was played in Episode 38 as Sonic and Shadow fought the Biolizard. Many fans have sent petitions for uncut DVDs; 4Kids has made no comment on the subject.
