The 2014 Monaco Grand Prix, formally known as the Grand Prix de Monaco 2014, is a Formula One motor race that was held on 25 May 2014 at the Circuit de Monaco, a street circuit that runs through the principality of Monaco.[1]

Report

Background

Like the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix, tyre supplier Pirelli brought its yellow-banded soft compound tyre as the harder "prime" tyre and the red-banded super-soft compound tyre as the softer "option" tyre, just as they did the previous two years. It was the second time in the season that the super-soft compound was used at a race weekend.[2]

Post-qualifying

After the qualifying session concluded, Nico Rosberg was investigated by the stewards after he went off and caused yellow flags in the final moments of the session which in turn, could have cost Lewis Hamilton a chance at pole position. [3] However, no further action was taken.[4] Daniil Kvyat received a reprimand for impeding Pastor Maldonado during the first part of qualifying, while Marcus Ericsson was given two penalty points as well as a pit lane start for causing a collision with Felipe Massa.[5]

Race

Pastor Maldonado stalled on the grid before the warm-up lap so he didn't start the race. Nico Rosberg led Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel from pole but Kimi Raikkonen moved from 6th to 4th ahead of team-mate Fernando Alonso and Daniel Ricciardo. On lap 1 Sergio Perez ran wide at Mirebeau turn and was hit by Jenson Button when he moved back onto the racing line spinning Perez around to bring out the safety car, take Perez out of the race and damage the cars of Adrian Sutil and Romain Grosjean. Vettel suffered a problem with his turbo and retired on lap 5.

Sutil started moving up from the back of the field following his early pit-stop overtaking Grosjean and Marcus Ericsson at the hairpin, but on lap 23 he lost control coming out of the tunnel and crashed at Nouvelle chicane bringing out the safety car for the second time.

Everyone pitted under the safety car except Felipe Massa. Raikkonen had to pit twice after he was hit by Max Chilton and got a puncture, which resulted in him dropping to the back of the field. Jean-Eric Vergne was given a drive-through penalty for an unsafe release into the path of Kevin Magnussen.

Rosberg and Hamilton once again pulled away with Ricciardo 3rd and Alonso 4th. Felipe Massa took his 1st and only pit-stop after 40 laps. Vergne suffered an engine failure on lap 50 making Monaco his 4th retirement in 6 races, equaled by Sutil. Valtteri Bottas was caught up to by Esteban Gutierrez, Raikkonen and Massa who was on fresh tyres – before Bottas's engine failed on lap 55. Gutierrez then crashed at La Rascasse turn on lap 59 stopping him from taking his 1st points of the season as he ran 9th at the time. This promoted Jules Bianchi's Marussia up to 10th which would be Marussia's 1st ever points but he earned a 5 second time penalty for taking an earlier penalty under the safety car which would've demoted him to 11th with Grosjean's Lotus right behind him.

Jenson Button passed his teammate Magnussen at turn 1, moving up to 6th, and then Raikkonen attempted to do the same at the hairpin but ran too deep leaving both himself and Magnussen in the barrier. Both Raikkonen and Magnussen managed to get out of the barrier by reversing but lost a lot of time, thus promoting Bianchi to 8th and Grosjean to 9th. Raikkonen lost an extra lap as he had to pit for repairs.

Meanwhile, at the front, Hamilton had been about a second behind Rosberg for most of the race with Ricciardo almost 15 seconds behind the two, but Hamilton got some dirt in his eye with 12 laps to go meaning he slowed down allowing Ricciardo to catch up and by lap 73 with 5 laps to go Ricciardo was right behind him, however Hamilton managed to hold on to take 2nd spot at the finish line, while Ricciardo finished in 3rd.

Rosberg won his second consecutive Monaco Grand Prix and retook the championship lead. Only Hamilton, Ricciardo, and Alonso (in 4th) finished without being lapped by the leader. Nico Hulkenberg finished 5th, holding off a late charge by Button (6th). Massa finished 7th. Bianchi finished 8th but was given the 5 second time-penalty which dropped him to 9th behind Grosjean, but this still allowed him to score both his and Marussia's 1st ever points in Formula 1. Magnussen recovered to finish 10th, with rookie Marcus Ericsson coming from the pit-lane to finish 11th.
