Ever After High is a web series and a fashion doll franchise released by Mattel in July 2013. It is a companion line to the popular Monster High dolls. However, in this line the characters are based upon characters from fairytales and fantasy stories instead of monsters. As with Monster High and Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse, the line varies in different countries and varies in languages. Also like the two, it comes with two versions of the Spanish language. One, with Latino-America version also known as Mexican version of Latin America and Mexico, and one as a European Spanish version of Spain.
Dolls
Ever After High is a toy-line based on the teenage sons and daughters of famous fairytale characters. Created by Mattel, the producers of the Monster High line, these dolls follow in the hyper cute, mis-proportioned style of their predecessors. The first wave of fashion dolls included: Raven Queen, Apple White, Briar Beauty, and Madeline Hatter. This released was followed by: C.A. Cupid, Cerise Hood, Cedar Wood, Blondie Lockes, Ashlynn Ella, and Hunter Huntsman. Additional updated versions of some characters as well as doll accessories have also been released. Then Dexter Charming, Holly O'Hair, Poppy O'Hair, and Lizzie Hearts. Mattel also had an exclusive at the San Diego Comic-Con they had Cerise Wolf, the daughter of the Big Bad Wolf.
Storyline
Taking place in the Fairytale World, Ever After High is a boarding school where attending the teenage children of fairytale characters who are supposedly destined to follow in their parents’ footsteps in order keep their stories alive throughout the generations. People think that if they don't, these stories supposedly will cease to exist and the characters will disappear into oblivion. This controversial problem is the core conflict of the story.
The main characters are Raven Queen (who is unhappy with her destiny) and Apple White (who is destined to live "happily ever after"). Raven would prefer to create a new destiny for herself, while Apple White believes that if Raven changes her own story, this will put her own "happily ever after" in jeopardy. The school is divided into two cliques, the "Royals" and the "Rebels". The Royals are supporters of Apple, who embrace their destinies and are content with their fates. The Rebels are supporters of Raven, who prefer the idea of creating their own destinies. Many disagreements and fights result between the groups. There are also "Roybels", who may not have decided yet, or have a little bit of both writing their own destiny and following in some of their parents' footsteps, but that is a whole, other story (another story).
Characters
Royal students
The Royals are those who agree that their futures are pre-determined and seek to protect the system that ties them to a destiny that most of them eagerly look forward to. They are represented by a crown and the colors red, and gold.
Among the Royal Students are:
- Apple White (voiced by Jonquil Goode) - Apple White is the Royal protagonist of the series. She is the daughter of Snow White and like her mother, she has skin as white as snow. Her hair, however, is light blond rather than black which is a problem for most of her subjects. She also has pale blue eyes, blood-red lips, which is actually lipstick, but in her Basic doll and Getting Fairest doll, she wears pink lipstick. She wears golden, gold apple earrings (red ones in Chapter 1, or Season 1, of the webisodes). Apple is cheerful, generous, a natural leader and a straight A student, but has a tendency to act self-centered. With a dream of being a great queen and a fear of the unknown, Apple is a true believer in the system of destinies, and has trouble understanding the Rebels' desires to not follow theirs. She wants Raven Queen to follow her destiny so she can become the next Snow White. Apple's magic power is that whenever she bats her eyes or signs a song, boys and animals can't help but come to her rescue. Apple considers Raven one of her best friends, but hopes to get Raven to follow their story so she can get her happy ending. In the beginning of the series, Apple asks Headmaster Grimm to pair Raven as her roommate. People think that Daring Charming is her boyfriend, but Apple is currently not interested in being in a relationship. Her favorite subject is Kingdom Management and her least favorite is Cooking class-ic. Apple's "secret heart's desire", is for people to know her as the fairest on of all on the inside as well as the outside. Apple's quote is: "There's a lot of pressure when you're next in line to be 'The Fairest of Them All.'"
- Blondie Lockes (voiced by Julie Maddalena Kliewer) - The Royal daughter of Goldilocks. Blondie has blond curls with bangs and blue eyes. She is something of a perfectionist, always trying to find or make something "just right". She is Ever After High’s authority on gossip, and runs a popular news MirrorCast called "Just Right". Blondie claims to be royalty, and in the 3-minute webisode, "Blondie Branches Out", it is revealed that following Goldilocks’ Happily Ever After, she was crowned queen of a cul-de-sac, meaning Blondie was telling the truth. In Blondie's signature look, or basic outfit, or Signature - Royals, she wears a blue dress with gold in it, and gold bear earrings and in Thronecoming, she wears a blue dress with blue, long earrings, and shiny, glittery, sparkly hair with pigtail buns and blue gems on each cheek under her eyes. Blondie's roommate is C.A. Cupid. Blondie loves helping out her friends. Due to her mother being able to unlock the door to the Three Bears' cottage, she has the power to unlock any lock. Blondie's quote is: "Like my mom Goldilocks, I'm searching for perfection."
- Lizzie Hearts (voiced by Wendee Lee) - The Royal daughter of the Queen of Hearts. Lizzie speaks with a British accent, like her mom. She appears angry and violent to others because of her constant screaming of, "off with her head!", but secretly wishes she could be a kinder, less bloodthirsty queen. Lizzie was most effected by the evacuation of Wonderland and has yet to give up hope that, one day, she will be able to return home and see her mother again. Lizzie has a magic deck of playing cards that she can use to build anything. She went on a date with Daring Charming, and it is implied that she has developed feelings for him, despite believe that she isn't meant to be loved. She is roommates with Duchess Swan. Her best friend forever after is Kitty Cheshire. She, including Madeline Hatter and Kitty Cheshire, is able to speak Riddlish, the language of Wonderland. However, unlike Madeline and Kitty, she has never apparently heard the narrators or spoken to them. Her quote is: "Wonderland is the most nonsensical, riddle-tastic, Wonderlandiful place ever after."
- Holly O'Hair - Holly O'Hair is the Royal daughter of Rapunzel. She is a lover of fairy-tales and has memorized the details of everyone's stories. Due to being the firstborn twin, Holly got the Rapunzel destiny, but in "O'Hair's Split Ends", it is found that Poppy is actually the older twin. The sisters decided to keep this a secret and continued with their roles in life. She has long, strawberry-blond or red hair that it burnt strawberry-blond and almost auburn that grows back instinctively when it's cut unlike Poppy's. Holly's hair reaches to the floor in the webisodes and is wavy in all other parts of the series. Her hair is straight in the doll. She loves reading and wants to write a new book of fairy tales, starring all her friends. Holly is scared of heights, which is ironic because her dorm room is in the highest tower at Ever After High. She has a crush on a fairy prince charming named Daring Charming, but can't date him because it's not part of her destiny, and she is afraid of others, Apple White in particular, knowing. Holly's quote is: "The night before I left for Ever After High, I looked at the stars outside the tower window and wished that both Poppy and I could have a once upon a time."
- Duchess Swan (voiced by Stephanie Sheh) - The Royal daughter of the Swan Princess Swan Queen from Swan Lake. Duchess is an expert dancer as a ballerina, and has the ability to turn into a black swan. Being destined to be a tragic heroine has left her spiteful and jealous, and she will do anything for her own Happily Ever After. She takes particular delight in tormenting students with destinies worse than her own, such as Raven. Her roommate is Lizzie Hearts. Duchess's favorite spot to dance on is the Enchanted Lake. She doesn't like Lizzie when she's very loud!. Her best friend forever after is Faybelle Thorn. Duchess's quote is: "I'm destined to have a tragic ending where I'm cursed into the body of a swan. But it's not going to be that way forever. I have bigger plans."
- Daring Charming (voiced by Evan Smith) - Son of King Charming and older brother to Dexter and Darling Charming. He is destined to save and marry Apple White, though they only see each other as friends for now. Unlike his shy brother Dexter, Daring is very popular and brave, but also narcissistic and a bit of a flirt. His dazzling smile can cause temporary blindness.
- Dexter Charming (voiced by Evan Smith) - Son of King Charming, the twin of Darling Charming, and younger brother to Daring Charming. Unlike most of his family, Dexter is awkward and has low self-esteem, but has a sweet and understanding personality. He has a huge crush on Raven Queen, but has been unable to confess his feelings due to his shyness. He does not know what his destiny is, but he can guess it has something to do with a prince. In "Blondie Branches Out", he reveals there are many unrelated Charmings in the fairytale world, so his father could have been any Prince Charming, revealing he is not related to Apple White or Ashlynn Ella, and every Charming from every tale was a different man. Dexter's roommate is Hunter Huntsman. He does not know that C.A. Cupid has a huge crush on him. Dexter's quote is: "As the second son of King Charming, there's a lot of hexpectations. My brother and I have to live up to our family traditions."
- Hopper Croakington III (voiced by Cam Clarke) - Son of the Frog Prince. When he is nervous, tongue-tied, or embarrassed, he turns into a frog in which he can fully express his poetic side. He has a huge crush on Briar Beauty.
- Three Little Pigs (voiced by Audu Paden) - The Three Little Pigs are the sons of the Three Little Pigs. In "Replacing Raven" the littlest one wanted to substitute Raven's role, but soon changed his mind.
- Faybelle Thorn - Faybelle Thorn (voiced by Haviland Stillwell) is the daughter of the Wicked fairy godmother who is exclusive to the book series so far and has not yet been revealed in the webisodes or franchise. She strongly dislikes Raven Queen, because Raven's mother attempted to take over as the Sleeping beauty story's villain and dishonored her mother.
Rebel students
The Rebels are those students who disagree that their futures should be pre-determined and seek to change the system that condemns them to a destiny most of them do not want, and rewrite their own destiny. They are represented by a winged heart and the colors purple or gold.
Among the Rebel students are:
- Raven Queen (voiced by Erin Fitzgerald in an indifferent voice) - Raven Queen is the Rebel protagonist of the series. She is the daughter of the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but also the daughter of the Good King (who was Snow White's father). Due to the fact that the Evil Queen is Snow White's stepmother and her father was Snow White's father, Raven is Apple's "step-aunt" making Apple Raven's "step-niece". Raven has violet eyes and black hair with purple highlights. She is a friendly and down-to-earth girl who wants nothing more than to be true to herself. This prompted her to refuse her destiny on Legacy Day, starting the Rebel movement. She has dark magic powers, but has trouble controlling them and doesn't like to use them. Raven's mother the Evil Queen almost conquered the land years ago before being secretly imprisoned. Raven is often annoyed by Apple's insensitivity and the fact that she sings all of the time, but still loves her as a friend and tries to reach a compromise with the princess. Her best friend ever after is Madeline Hatter even though Raven's mother took over and supposedly destroyed Wonderland. Raven loves music: she plays the guitar and sings and dreams of being a musician. Raven's quote is: "What if I want to choose my own Happily Ever After?".
- Madeline Hatter (voiced by Cindy Robinson) - Madeline Hatter is the Rebel daughter of the Mad Hatter from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Raven's best friend. She is known by her friends as Maddie, and is an optimistic and eccentric free spirit. Though looking forward to being the next Mad Hatter, Maddie still believes in free choice as a Rebel. Maddie and her father had to flee their home in Wonderland when the Evil Queen tried to take over. Fortunately, she has never let this affect her friendship with Raven. With magical Wonderland Madness, Maddie can fit and pull anything out of her magic top hat, including her pet dormouse Earl Grey, speak Riddlish and, does things that are otherwise impossible, such as eating rocks and moving through walls. She also talks to the Narrators, arguing with them at times, but the other characters seem to dismiss this as part of her "madness". Maddie's roommate is Kitty Cheshire. Madeline's quote is: "I love that I get to be the next Mad Hatter. The tea parties...the riddle games...the fun with talking bunnies."
- Hunter Huntsman (voiced by Grant George) - Hunter Huntsman is the son of the Huntsman from Snow White whom ironically is also the same Huntsman from Little Red Riding Hood as Mattel decided to make it like this. Hunter is destined to save both Apple White and Cerise Hood. He is a vegan who cares deeply for animals and is shown to be gentle and sensitive, but is easily angered by a squirrel named Pesky. He is dating Ashlynn Ella which was formerly a secret. At times, when trying to act heroic, he finds himself shoved away from a situation, leaving him sighing, "And now I'm here." His roommate is Dexter Charming. His favorite place to hang out is the Enchanted Forest. His birthday is March 13. His star sign is a Pisces. Hunter's favorite food is raw food, that's not from an animal. Hunter's quote is: "What if I fall in love, but it's not my destiny?".
- C.A. Cupid (voiced by Erin Fitzgerald) - C.A. Cupid is the Rebel daughter of Eros, being adopted. She originally attended Monster High, but transferred to Ever After High so she could help people find true love. CA Cupid is a Rebel, believing that everyone has the right to follow their hearts. She hosts a MirrorCast that gives advice about love. She also has a secret crush on Dexter Charming. Her roommate is Blondie Lockes. Her parents aren't in a fairytale like all the other students at Ever After High, so she is a myth. Her birthday is November 24, so her star sign is a Sagittarius. Cupid's favorite food is cupcakes with a whole lot of love. C.A's quote is: "Everyone is so used to following their destinies, they don't know how to follow their heart. I'm here to change that!".
- Briar Beauty (voiced by Kate Higgins) - Briar Beauty the recently Rebel daughter of Sleeping Beauty and Apple's best friend. She has tan skin, brown eyes, and brown hair with pink streaks. She is a fashionable girl with flair and spunk, and every girl looks to her for the latest trends. Due to being destined to sleep for a hundred years, Briar intends to live life to its fullest until then, whether by shopping, throwing parties, or doing potentially dangerous stunts, such as zip-lining or jumping out windows. Unfortunately, due to residual effects of the sleeping curse, she often falls asleep at random times. To make up for sleeping in class, Briar is very good at studying. Briar's magic power is that she can hear everything for miles and miles, but only when she's sleeping. Her secret hear's desire is to live every day to her fullest. Briar's roommate is Ashlynn Ella. She wishes that she was Apple's roommate, but doesn't mind having Ashlynn as a roommate because she can borrow her shoe collection. Her biggest fear is losing her family and friends after her 100 years of sleep. When it is revealed during Thronecoming that the Storybook of Legends the students have previously signed is a fake, she secretly finds the real book and attempts to destroy it to prevent having to seal her destiny. Briar's quote is "If I'm gonna be catching Zs for a hundred years, I gotta live it up now!".
- Ashlynn Ella (voiced by Laura Bailey) - The daughter of Cinderella. She was formerly a Royal, but declared herself a Rebel in the 8-minute special "True Hearts Day." She has strawberry blonde hair and emerald green eyes. She is a sweet and sensible girl who works as manager of the "Glass Slipper" shoe boutique, making her one of the few princesses with an after school job. Due to her deep connection with nature, Ashlynn is a vegan and an environmentalist. She is dating fellow animal-lover Hunter Huntsmen, which at first they kept a secret, because Hunter is not part of Ashlynn’s destiny. However, in the “True Hearts Day” special, they brought the secret to light, and Ashlynn became a Rebel so she could be with him. Ashlynn's roommate is Briar Beauty. Ashlynn hates it when she's late to events so she tries her best to be on time. Ashlynn loves different shoes and always tries to get the latest shoe style's for her boutique. Her birthday is October 15. Her star sign is a Libra. Her favorite food is anything nature provides, since she is a vegan. Ashlynn's quote is: "I was never thrilled about being swept away by some random Prince Charming. True love should happen naturally."
- Cedar Wood (voiced by Jonquil Goode) - Cedar Wood is the Rebel daughter of Pinocchio. Like her father once was, Cedar is a living life-size puppet. She is cursed to tell the truth until graduation even if it means making her blurt out the truth against her will. Like Maddie, Cedar looks forward to fulfilling her destiny and becoming a real girl, but believes that everyone should have the right to a Happily Ever After. She is artistic and loves painting. Her roommate is Cerise Hood. Cedar's quote, "I just want to make my own decisions, that's hard as oak when I have a curse that doesn't let me think about what I want to say."
- Cerise Hood (voiced by Rena S. Mandel) - Cerise Hood is the Rebel daughter of Red Riding Hood and Mr. Badwolf. She has grey eyes that glow yellow, and dark brown hair with bangs and a white streak. She is a quiet girl, but hopes that, with the Rebel movement, she will be able to open up and be herself. From her father’s side, Cerise has inherited wolf ears, which she hides under her trademark hood, instincts and increased speed. Cerise and her family has kept her parentage a secret from the world for years, because they could be banished for breaking the rules, and the only person Cerise trusts with the truth is Raven. She briefly exposed her ears at one of Maddie's parties, but everyone besides Raven thought they were fakes. She is distantly related to Sparrow Hood as Robin Hood and Red Riding Hood have different relations. Her roommate is Cedar Wood. She loves it when unlikely couples flip the script. Cerise thinks that Cedar is the sweetest, but doesn't trust her to keep a secret, due to Cedar's curse. Cerise's quote is: "When I run like the wind, I feel free. I wish I could join the school track team, but I have to hide my strengths."
- Poppy O'Hair (voiced by Lindsay Ames) - Poppy O'Hair is the Rebel daughter of Rapunzel, but she can also be classified as a Roybel (someone who's neither a Royal or a Rebel, but in between). She cuts her burnt-strawberry blond hair short with a purple dyed side. She is an artistic hairstylist and works at the Tower Hair Salon. Since she was born after Holly, she has no legacy to follow leaving her free to choose her destiny. In "O'Hair's Split Ends," it is found that Poppy is actually the older twin, but the sisters decide to instead keep the destinies they want. Her roommate is Holly O' Hair, her twin sister. Poppy loves scarves and punk muse-ic. She has a crush on Sparrow Hood, despite being annoyed with his obsession with himself. Poppy's birthday is June 19, like her sister's. Poppy's quote is: "I'm a fairytale without a story, but I'm ready to write my own once upon a time.".
- Sparrow Hood (voiced by Todd Haberkorn) - Sparrow Hood is the Rebel son of Robin Hood. He is a rocker who carries his guitar with him at all times, though his talents as a singer is limited. He is egotistic, obnoxious, and many people find him annoying. Sparrow doesn't really care about the Royal-Rebel conflict, but will use it to cause trouble for fun. He was Duchess Swan’s only friend until he realized it was ruining his reputation and refused to have anything to do with her.
- Merry Men - The Merry Men are the friends and posse of Sparrow Hood. Ever since the destiny conflict erupted, there's been tension among the group members because some identify as Rebels and others as Royals.
- Tucker - Tucker is the son of Friar Tuck. He is on the side of the Rebels because he fears that he'll go bald like his father.
- Ginger Breadhouse - Ginger Breadhouse is the daughter of the Candy Witch from Hansel and Gretel and loves to cook. Ginger doesn't like her destiny very much and would rather be a pastry chef with her own cooking show, thus she is a Rebel. She is a prankster, but her tricks tend to get out of hand, such as attempting to expose Cerise’s family secret. It is revealed that she can hear the Narrators as Madeline can, and is deliberately hiding whether she is a Royal or Rebel because, if her truth were revealed, "where's the fun in that?"
- Tiny (voiced by Malcolm Danare) - Tiny is a giant and the son of the giants from Jack and the Beanstalk making him the largest student at Ever After High.
