Tadepalligudem is a Municipal town in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India.[3] It is the agricultural commercial hub of West Godavari district which is renowned as the "Annapurna of Andhra Pradesh. This town is very famous for Onion trade.

Geography

Tadepalligudem is located at 16°50′00″N 81°30′00″E / 16.8333°N 81.5000°E / 16.8333; 81.5000.[4] It has an average elevation of 34 meters (114 feet). From tadepalligudem, Maadhavaram is located at a distance of about 16 km from the military installation where most of the villagers work and retire from Indian Military. For this reason, the village is called the "Military Maadhavaram".

Demographics

As of 2011 Census of India, the city had a population of 103,577. The total population constitute, 51,176 males and 52,401 females —a sex ratio of 1024 females per 1000 males, higher than the national average of 940 per 1000.[1][5] 9,048 children are in the age group of 0–6 years, of which 4,662 are boys and 4,386 are girls—a ratio of 941 per 1000. The average literacy rate stands at 83.10% (male 86.60%; female 79.71%) with 78,557 literates, significantly higher than the national average of 73.00%.[1][6]

The Urban agglomeration had a population of 103,703, of which males constitute 51,236 females constitute 52,467 —a sex ratio of 986 females per 1000 males and 9,061 children are in the age group of 0–6 years. There are a total of 78,656 literates with an average literacy rate of 83.11%.[2]

Economy

Agriculture

Tadepalligudem is famous for its jaggery, onion, fruits market and rice cultivation. Sugar, turmeric, bananas, etc., are also grown. It is famous for its godowns. This young town, which has seen tremendous growth in the industrial sector, also has become a home for major hotels and markets.

Irrigation

The Western delta canal of Godavari River flows through Tadepalligudem and separates the town into two divisions. It is the main source for drinking water and agriculture.

Industries

Tadepalligudem has a large number of rice mills. In Tadepalligudem, Food Fats and Fertilizers (FFF), produces soap oil, fertilizer raw materials and other food oil components (palm oil, vanaspati, rice bran oil) etc., is one of the larger industrial units.[7] Apart from this, there are jaggery, power, steel manufacturing industries as well as smaller scale industries like chalk, candles, and cashew grading. Tadepalligudem is known as an industrial town, rather than as a residential. Tadepalligudem is the exported of mangoes and onions to other countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia, etc.

Education

The Andhra University Campus was established in 2004. Recently Andhra Pradesh government started Andhra Pradesh Horticultural University at Tadepalligudem, having four colleges in other parts of the state. It is first of its kind University in South India. Adikavi Nannya University,[8] Dr.YS Rajasekhar Reddy Horticultural University[9] are the important universities. The university was established by the Government of Andhra Pradesh through G.O.Ms. No. 134 dated 26-06-2007 at Venkataramannagudem, near Tadepalligudem in West Godavari District. It is only the second Horticultural University in the country. notable professional colleges in and around the city are St Mary Stella College of Education, AKRG College (established in 1997) in Nallajerla near Tadepalligudem, Sasi Institute of Technology and Engineering, West Godavari Institute of Science & Engineering, AKRG Instituations in Nallajerla.

Transportation

Road

Tadepalligudem is well connected to most cities and towns in Andhra Pradesh by the state road transport corporation APSRTC. The city is situated at a distance of 115 km from Vijayawada, on the National Highway 16 (which connects Chennai and Kolkatta). There is good connectivity with Narsapur, Palakollu, Eluru, Tanuku and Ravulapalem. 16, part of the golden quadrilateral (i.e., Kolkata to Chennai), passes through Tadepalligudem. Tadepalligudem Bus station is one of the big bus stations in the West Godavari district.[citation needed]

Rail

The broad gauge section of Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada section of Howrah-Chennai main line passes through this city. There are daily express and passenger trains to Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkatta throughout the day. Tadepalligudem station is located between Eluru and Rajahmundry, which is the busiest line in South Central Railway. It is second biggest station in West Godavari. Almost every train passes in this line have stoppages in Tadepalligudem.

Airport

Tadepalligudem has an airport which is currently not in use (2.45 km long runway), which was built by the British to accommodate military aircraft during World War II. We can see the runway now also. (Built on 1942) Recently government of Andhra Pradesh proposed an airport in Tadepalligudem along with other five cities, which is going to come up shortly.[10] Rajahmundry Airport located near Madhurapudi is the nearest airport to Tadepalligudem. Gannavaram Airport is about 85 km from this town.

Places of worship are Dwarakatirumala (Chinna Tirupati) Lord Sri Venkasteswara Swamy Vari Temple which is just 45 km, Sri Kanyaka Parameswari Panchayatana Kshetram, Somarama temple, one of the Pancharama Kshetras belonging lord shiva in bhimavaram is just 35 km; Sri veera Bhadra Swamy temple of lord shiva Pattiseema on the banks of river Godavari is 62 km from Tadepalligudem; Sri Maddi Anjaneya Swamy Vari Temple near Jangareddygudem is 55 km, Palakol ksherarama Temple of lord shiva is 55 km, Kanaka Durga Temple, Vijayawada is 120 km, Bhadrachalam Sri Seeta Ramachandra Swamy vari Temple is 180 km, Buddhist Caves, Christ Luthern Church etc.

Tourism

Papi Hills is one of the major tourist destinations. Andhra pradesh Tourism Dindi Resorts on the bank of river godavari is 70 km away. Bhimavaram is a popular destination among people of Tadepalligudem for jewellery,Textiles,Cuisine,fish.
