Series chronology

The fourth series of Strictly Come Dancing started on 7 October 2006 and ended on 23 December. Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly returned to co-present the main show on BBC One, whilst Claudia Winkleman returned to present spin-off show Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two on BBC Two for the third series in a row. Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Arlene Phillips returned as judges. The winner was Mark Ramprakash and his dancing partner Karen Hardy.

Each week, Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly present a show in which celebrities meet up with professional dancers to compete against each other for the most points. Each couple in a set order will perform their dance targeting to impress judges Craig Revel Horwood, Arlene Phillips, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli and the public who each week vote for who they would like to see next week. After the dance, the judges will comment on how well they performed and give a score out of 10. Once, all the couples have danced they are inserted in ranking order on the judges' leaderboard. The couple (s) who have the highest score will get the maximum points available (depending on how many couples are dancing that week) and the lowest scoring couple (s) will get one point. The public may end up disagreeing with the judges so this means there will be an unexpected elimination. There is a bottom two survival in which the lowest scoring couples battle it out one last time. Whoever gets the least overall points is eliminated and are asked to perform one last dance (usually hugging or lifts rather than a certain dance content.) This is not judged.

Additional information

• This Series saw the addition of 2 new competitive dances to Strictly Come Dancing, the Salsa danced in Week 5 and the Argentine Tango danced only by the semi-finalists
• In week one, the male celebrity couples danced for the judges and the public vote, while the female celebrity couples performed a group dance. This was reversed in week two. Jimmy Tarbuck did not take part in the male celebrities' group dance due to health reasons, and officially withdrew from the competition the following week. From week three, all couples were marked against each other
• Mark and Karen made Strictly Come Dancing history in week five by being the first couple who had to restart a routine. They were forced to stop after Mark's microphone was caught in Karen's dress. In spite of this, they received another go and went on to receive the highest score of the night
• In the results show of week 10, the two couples with the lowest combined score had to perform a "dance-off" for survival. However, it was possible for viewers to calculate the points combination that each couple received beforehand, which indicated that the result was actually unaffected by the dance-off
• Lilia Kopylova made Strictly history by becoming the first professional winner to reach two consecutive finals. Her record has since been equalled by Aliona Vilani, who got to the 2010 and 2011 finals, and Pasha Kovalev who came second in 2011 and 2012.
• Mark Ramprakash's victory meant that this was the second consecutive series which had been won by a cricketer.
