Protecting the Pálinka Article

Hi MusikAnimal, you have recently semi-protected the Pálinka article based on persistent disruptive editing (thanks for that, btw). However, now that the protection is gone, the same IPs continue their disruptive editing (still without replying to Talk page comments). Protecting the article again may be an option, or what do you suggest we should do? KœrteFa {ταλκ} 21:15, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to defer this to another admin this time around if that's alright. Seems like a legitimate content dispute, but obviously there issues with the IP editor not engaging in discussion. Historically they are editing from multiple IPs so protection is probably still the best route (as opposed to blocking). Please request at WP:RFPP, thanks! MusikAnimal talk 21:22, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
OK, no worries, and thanks for your prompt response. KœrteFa {ταλκ} 21:26, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Delay (again)

Okay, you worthless New York techie, I demand satisfaction. Really, @MusikAnimal, it's driving me batty. You don't want me to go nuts, do you? At least not any more nuts than I already am? If you didn't get anywhere at IRC, what about me reporting it as a bug? Even better, what about you reporting it as a bug? I don't care whether it's in fact a bug - it's bugging me, and that oughta be enough. I'm sure this post has brightened your day. Sunshine over and out.--Bbb23 (talk) 21:50, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Haha Bbb23 sorry to hear you're still having trouble! We could file a phab report but let's first try to some troubleshooting. I haven't noticed a big delay lately... A few questions:
  1. What browser/OS are you using?
  2. Go to speedtest.net and let me know how fast your connection is.
  3. What gadgets do you have enabled? Just go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets, select the list of gadgets using your mouse and copy and paste them in a collapsed template like:
    {{collapse top}}
    ...crap ton of text...
    {{collapse bottom}}
  4. Is the issue persistent? As in does it happen more or less on every page load?
If we do file a phab report we'll need this kind of info to help reproduce the issue. If the culprit turns out to be too many gadgets/scripts enabled, we can look into some workarounds. MusikAnimal talk 22:18, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Give me some time, @MusikAnimal. When I went to do the gadget part, I discovered some gadgets checked that I don't need. In fact, I'm not sure when I checked them or if they were new and came on as checked by default. Anyway, I unchecked them, so let's see if that improves things before we plunge ahead with the troubleshooting. BTW, I used to use those kinds of speedtest pages, but I uninstalled Adobe Flash as it was causing me too many problems (it really doesn't get along well with Firefox) and had very little value as far as I was concerned. Generally, my speed is about 50Mbps down, 5Mbps up.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:42, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I was avoiding coming back here hoping that it would all just go away. It did seem to improve right after I removed some gadgets, but even if it's more intermittent than it was before, it's still relatively persistent and the delay is still not at an unacceptable level. There are times when it's painful. So, do you want me to answer your original questions?--Bbb23 (talk) 13:38, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, because honestly I haven't had any issues even at home where I've got a slow-ish internet connection. I wonder if Redrose64 is still seeing the delay? MusikAnimal talk 14:54, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What delay, and where did I last mention it? --Redrose64 (talk) 23:29, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Redrose64: here.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:21, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. --Redrose64 (talk) 10:52, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here's part of it with a question.

  1. Firefox 40.0.3, Windows 7 64-bit.
  2. Already answered, about 50Mbps/5Mbps
  3. Gadgets. The copy won't copy the text boxes so you can't even see what gadgets are enabled. What do I do?
  4. Already answered in my latest comments

--Bbb23 (talk) 15:14, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, this may not be fun, but I guess it's the best way to tell me what gadgets you're using: Go to this URL [16] then hit Ctrl+A to select everything, then Ctrl+C to copy, then here paste it within a {{collapse top}} ... paste here ... {{collapse bottom}} MusikAnimal talk 15:43, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm using so few, it would be easier just to quote the enabled gadgets. However, here goes the way you asked for it.

It's still in the edit window. It was there in Show previw, but I don't see it otherwise.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:30, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah that's not very many. I see "searchFocus", "Twinkle", "HideFundraisingNotice", "ReferenceTooltips", "WatchlistBase", "WatchlistGreenIndicatorsMono", "UTCLiveClock", "purgetab", "dropdown-menus", "OldDiff", and "contribsrange". None of those looks like they'd slow things down too much... though you could probably remove "Add a Purge option to the top of the page", as you can purge the page by click the UTC time at the top-right, or using Page > Purge cache in the dropdown menus. Going to look over your user scripts next, where I see you also don't have very many! I'll get back to you soon MusikAnimal talk 17:24, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The only one you mention that I don't see at all, enabled or not, is WatchlistGreenIndicatorsMono. I've disabled purgetab.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:08, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't have a question mark

When I tried to delete Timothy "Mckenna" Sivore, it jumped to Timothy. As you can see from the history, I moved the article to my userspace without leaving a redirect and then deleted the moved article from my userspace. So, master, what's the reason for this gem? Aren't you glad you're a guru?--Bbb23 (talk) 04:50, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Bbb23: Looks like I fixed it the last time we had an issue (16 September) but forgot to copy it over to MediaWiki:Gadget-dropdown-menus-vector.js. Whoops! Should be good now :) MusikAnimal talk 05:09, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The fix you linked to doesn't help because I can't follow it. What exactly about this page prevented me from deleting it normally (I was able to delete other pages at the same time as I couldn't delete this one)?--Bbb23 (talk) 12:19, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That link was just to prove to you that I had fixed it the last time around (as evidenced by the timestamp) :) The double quotes are what was causing the link to break. The JavaScript uses a string to generate the link, and the URL is wrapped in double quotes, so if there are double quotes in the page name the string is improperly truncated. Easily fixed by escaping the string. I'm going to create a bunch of test pages with all sorts of weird characters to make sure we're covering all scenarios, so that stuff like this this won't happen again. But mind you this is all a result of a bug in the MediaWiki JavaScript API! Not a bug in the script written by yours truly! :) MusikAnimal talk 15:45, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ha! I even understand all that you said. So, the truncation left it with Timothy, the page it jumped to. But - there's always a but with Mr. Quibbler - why did it jump rather than just do nothing (as it did with the ?), or bring up the delete template for Timothy?--Bbb23 (talk) 17:00, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The parameters that tell the software what you're trying to do follow the ? character, as with en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Example&action=delete. Here since the double-quotes cut it off the action=delete part was never applied, instead we ended up with en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Timothy which is the same as action=view (view the page). It's been so long I don't remember what the issue was the ? that you originally encountered. Either way that makes at least two bugs that you have identified! Keep it coming :) MusikAnimal talk 01:35, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Your wish is my command. Mehranhamza(moonhamza) gets this error message: The requested page title contains invalid characters: "%28". --Bbb23 (talk) 15:43, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like lots of special characters don't work now. I'm gonna stop patrolling CSD until you fix it - too much bother. See Cho'zyn boy.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:46, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Bbb23: Coincidentally I am working on kinking out these bugs right now! You'll see I just deleted it, so I have a fix :) Let me fix everything (all freakin' links) once and for all then I will update the gadget. Take a look at User:MusikAnimal/Test pages. I think that covers most everything, if you think of some other kind of title that might break the script let me know or create it as a subpage of User:MusikAnimal/Test pages. Sorry for all the bugs!!! MusikAnimal talk 15:48, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Bbb23: Okee doke, I've update the delete/protect/edit intro links, they worked on all of my test pages. Give it a try at Cho'zyn boy. I'm going to continue to make sure the external tools links work, as some of them require things to be encoded differently. Anyway you should be good to continue with your patrolling! Sorry again for the trouble! MusikAnimal talk 15:52, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Works now on Cho'zyn boy, thanks! There's an upside to the bugs. I have an excuse for not working as hard.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:02, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Email panic time

Imagine my confusion when I get an email that says "Your user rights have changed on Wikipedia / Your user rights were changed by MusikAnimal. You are now a member of this group: Administrators."

It's like "What? I didn't know I was an administrator!"

Later I read the "earlier" message that said you'd made me an administrator and I figured out that this was about the test: Wikipedia, not en:. Whew.

In any case, I'm glad you were able to get the job done without me, I've been kind of busy off-wiki the last few days. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 18:30, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Haha yes that must have been an alarming thing to see! Anyway I read into it and I guess testwiki is really reserved for development-related purposes. For this reason I removed the admin bit, so sorry about that. There are numerous wikis available to test out sysop tools, see testwiki:Wikipedia:Requests/Tools. You might also get away with adminship at test2 wiki but I am not a bureaucrat there. Best MusikAnimal talk 18:35, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello from YPT50

Hello - I was hoping you could tell me the status of Young People's Theatre, which I have been blocked from editing. I understand where I went wrong in copying certain text from www.youngpeoplestheatre.ca (of which I am an employee). Is there a way for me to continue editing the page now? - Clare, Sept. 23, 2015 YPT50 (talk) 17:22, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@YPT50: Hello Clare. First and foremost: It is a major concern that you are editing on behalf of your organization. The fact that you are an employee of the subject makes you subject to a conflict of interest. Generally it's best that you do not write about subjects you are affiliated with, as it can be difficult to maintain a neutral tone and/or unbiased approach to your writing. You should disclose your affiliation anywhere a discussion takes place about the Young People's Theater.
As for the copyright concerns, this involves legal matters so we are very strict about it. You cannot copy and paste content from other sources unless it is released under a license compatible with Wikipedia. You could try to get the text properly relicensed, but sometimes it's easier to just put it in your own words. More on that at WP:DONATETEXT.
Again I strongly discourage you from editing about Young People's Theater. If you do, please review Wikipedia:Conflict of interest to understand why this is a problem, specifically WP:DISCLOSURE so that it is clear to you that you should disclose your connection. Thanks and sorry my assistance could not be more favourable MusikAnimal talk 20:17, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@MusikAnimal: Thanks for your help - I have familiarized myself with all the guidelines and rules now. My first concern is to have the Young People's Theatre page unblocked for regular readers to view. What do I have to do in order for this to happen?YPT50 (talk) 16:34, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Did you mean Young People's Theatre? I removed the copyright information and the template that hid the text. It is fully viewable now. Best MusikAnimal talk 16:39, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker)@MusikAnimal: He may have meant User:Young People's Theatre. See related discussion at the bottom of User talk:Young People's Theatre#Sept. 2015 - page block (as of 22:06, 25 September 2015 (UTC)) started by this editor and which involved edits by Clare36. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 22:06, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WWE Network information

Hello MusikAnimal, I edited the WWE Network page to add information about the newest WWE Network programming featuring WWE's newest tattoo show on the WWE Network which is WWE Superstar Ink, and I also added the official description of WWE's newest show, "The WWE List".

Can you please keep my edit up as I am not trolling and they are all legitimate? Thank you.

Vxmoore (talk) 19:56, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Vxmoore: Sorry, I see now that you were editing in good-faith. The descriptions you used are what made it appear unconstructive, and in fact they still are. We shouldn't use the promotional-sounding official taglines of the programmes, instead use a brief description that you yourself wrote to accurately and neutrally describe the show. Hopefully that makes sense, and let me know if you need help! MusikAnimal talk 20:02, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, MusikAnimal! I see you protected the Days of Our Lives cast members page and was wondering if you could do the same with the "previous" cast page. The same 142-IP editor has been making the same nonsense edits on that page as well. Thanks in advance if you can help with this.Cebr1979 (talk) 04:10, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Thank you MusikAnimal for your advice about getting me here. Much appreciated! --A.S. Brown (talk) 00:42, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Music bot/tool for the sound list

Hi MusikAnimal. I noticed at the bot request page that you're done with this request. That's great, thanks.

So, where is it? How does one use it? What do it do?Anythingyouwant (talk) 00:50, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Cyber marked it as done but it really isn't =P It's very close, though! I have a very neat tool I'm going to deploy soon. It features an API that I will have the bot use to do a one-time run and find all the files you're after. If it happens to come to the point where I'm suffering from fatigue and abandon the bot task, you will at least have the tool that should expedite your efforts. Best MusikAnimal talk 01:00, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, okay, thanks for the update. No rush.  :-)Anythingyouwant (talk) 01:03, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Anythingyouwant: Okay! I've got an initial release of the sound search tool up and running! There's still more work to do, but hopefully you'll find this useful as-is. Check it out at toollabs:musikanimal/sound_search. During testing I found numerous composers who have unused files on Wikipedia, for instance, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. In the result set, you can reveal info about the file (as specified by the "Information" template on Commons), play the file, and show which pages on Wikipedia use it. Each of those requires a separate API call, which is why we show the information on demand rather than by default show it, otherwise it'd have a significant impact on load time.

Now, I realize this lets you only query for one composer at a time, which may make your efforts to update Wikipedia:Sound/list take longer. But I got to thinking... and correct me if I'm wrong... but the point behind Wikipedia:Sound/list is to list all the free music files of notable composers, right? There seems to be a lot of maintenance involved, as you'll need to keep that list updated, and also the "backlinks" (what links to this file). So, why not use the tool? It's always up-to-date, and let's you play the files right within the interface. The only information missing is "performer", "comment" and "genre". I thought maybe we could add this information to the file pages directly in some uniform way, then the tool can go off of that. This would sort of phase out the Wikipedia:Sound/list concept and the considerable effort it takes to keep it up-to-date. What are your thoughts?

A quick explanation of updates I plan to make soon: Better API handling, as right now if there's server lag the tool may fail. I may convert some queries to go off of the replication database so this won't happen. Also I should be able to speed up the "List only files not currently used on Wikipedia", as we're querying the backlinks for each file individually when we could query for multiple files at once. This may all sound like gobbledygook to you but I thought I'd let you know anyway :)

Let me know what you think of the tool and how I can improve it. Best MusikAnimal talk 15:44, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, that's very impressive. I think it will be an excellent tool for people who are focusing on a particular composer, which I sometimes do. You might want to add a third button "List only files currently used in articles", just in case people would like to know about that.
The main issue I have is the following. When I use the Sound Lists, all I have to do is focus on the column labelled "What links to This File". I gaze down that column, and if there's no blank space then I just keep on gazing down the column, and I only stop my gaze when I reach blank space, because that means a file is not being used yet in a Wikipedia article. So, I can scan through dozens if not hundreds of composers in less than a minute, if all the respective files at commons are being put to good use in Wikipedia articles. But using the new tool would be difficult for this purpose, because I would have to type in and do a separate search for each composer. This is the main reason why I think the Sound Lists are very useful and worth keeping and updating. Anyway, who wants a juke box that doesn't say what's inside it?  :)Anythingyouwant (talk) 17:12, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The jukebox analogy is a great one :) I knew in its current state the tool wasn't going to fully offer what you wanted, and I'm content with what I have done, I just wasn't sure your approach and intent behind the sound list. The articles on composers probably don't change too much, or are subject to vandalism, otherwise I'd raise my point that they could changed by others while the sound list is not updated (e.g. the "what links to this file" could be outdated). If I had the time and energy, I could make a real jukebox just as you say, and how cool that would be! My goal here however was just to meet the bot request, which is well over halfway done. I built the API which the bot can now use, so it's just a matter of looping through the list of composers to find files not currently being used. About that... I could cross-reference against the sound lists, but figure just finding files that aren't being used would be sufficient, right? From there you can update the lists accordingly. Anyway I hope the frontend of the tool will still be of use moving forward :) Best MusikAnimal talk 01:54, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A really cool thing about the sound list as it stands right now is that the "what links to this file" cannot ever become outdated. For example, if you take a look at Sound/list/A, you'll see that the first item under "What links to this file" is Adolphe Adam, but this will automatically be deleted from the Sound/list/A if someone removes the music file from that article. That's because the nifty code that I used to construct Sound/list/A is similar to the code you see at Wikimedia Commons for an image, where it says "File usage on other wikis" (i.e. that info is changed automatically when the file usage changes).
As for just finding files that aren't being used, I suppose that would be helpful, but it would be even more helpful to get files that aren't being used & that are not already listed in the sound list. That's because there are many files that are listed in the sound list but that are crummy, and so they shouldn't be included in articles....those files may be very poor quality or duplicates or redundant or whatever, and I've been trying to make a note of why they're not included (yet) in Wikipedia articles. I definitely would not want to list one of those files twice (or more) in the sound list.Anythingyouwant (talk) 03:23, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Anythingyouwant: Aha! Very nice, I did not know you could sort of "transclude" a special page like that. Anyway, it took some tweaking, but here's the list of unused files not on the sound lists: User:MusikBot/SoundSearch/List. Let me know if anything looks wrong. Thanks for all of your input, and the fun project. Cheers! MusikAnimal talk 16:35, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Will check it out later today, thanks. Ton of stuff going on first. In the mean time, FYI, the neato transclusion was deemed possible by me, and sought by me, but the expert who made it happen this summer was User:Cryptic.[17] Cheers.Anythingyouwant (talk) 18:27, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, but I wonder why files like these aren't included in your list.Anythingyouwant (talk) 00:28, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, well there was a catch-all on the script so that it didn't quit out on a fatal error, that way I could leave it running unattended. The composers that were skipped were logged somewhere and I can't find it :( In this case it was the double-quotes in the filename File:Op. 1 (vaterlands-bluthen) part01 - "andante maestoso".ogg, which should have been escaped. This is a careless error on my part, so apologies! I've modified the script, with proper logging, and am going to give it another spin :) This time going to write to User:MusikBot/SoundSearch/List2 so we can see what was missed. By the way, at the last minute I discovered the API "links here" endpoint is inaccurate. Turns out the backlinks for files are in a different table, inaccessible via the API. Fortunately we've got the replication database, which is what I went off of. MusikAnimal talk 01:29, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. How about these guys?Anythingyouwant (talk) 02:44, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Should have ran this by you... for performance reasons the bot only looks in categories that contain any of the words "composition", "audio", "flac", "midi", and "ogg". Maybe I should add "Op."? I could go all out and let the bot go through every category, but we might run into issues... not to mention a significantly longer run time (not the bot gets tired or anything =P). I'm willing to try, but if you can come up with a comprehensive list of words to look for that would be better. MusikAnimal talk 02:52, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, the best thing would be if the bot goes through (in this case) Category:Muzio Clementi plus all subcats, subsubcats, et cetera. One never knows what the subcats will be called. If the bot takes a day or two to make the rounds, I wouldn't mind at all. It wouldn't take any more of your time, right? I'm curious how many additional ogg, flac, and midi files the bot would find.Anythingyouwant (talk) 03:01, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, let's go for it. This greatly amplifies the task, and we might get categories with over 500 members, so I've opened up a BFRA on Commons at commons:Commons:Bots/Requests/MusikBot. Not expecting any issues with approval, but not sure how long it will take MusikAnimal talk 03:17, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Eggcellent, will check it out at Commons tomorrow. Past my bedtime now.  :)Anythingyouwant (talk) 03:22, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming that the bot gets approved, I'm thinking of deleting some stuff from the sound list before you run the bot. In particular, I would delete all the files that don't have the composer name listed. Then, those files would come up in your bot list with composer names, and I'd re-add them to the sound list. That seems much more efficient than me going through the sound list right now and adding composer names. Any thoughts about it?Anythingyouwant (talk) 17:08, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm well the bot looks for files not currently being used in articles and not on the sound list pages. We could make it check just the latter, and that would address your issue I think. I suppose for your purposes there's no need for it to check if it's used in articles? MusikAnimal talk 17:30, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The bot's okay the way it is, I think. This is just a matter of me being lazy and looking for the easiest way to find the composer names for a bunch of files that are currently listed without composer names. You don't need to do anything, I just went ahead and took care of it.[18]Anythingyouwant (talk) 17:42, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

extending protection from disruption?

Hi, you recently semi protected Subhas Chandra Bose due to persistent disruption by IPs. As soon as they realize Death of Subhas Chandra Bose exists, the trouble will just move there. can you extend the protection to include the spin out article?-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 17:04, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, well we generally do not protect preemptively. The protection there just expired, let's wait and see what happens. We can always restore the pretection if needed. MusikAnimal talk 17:10, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Revdel on contribution screen

Do you know of any tool or script that will allow admins to revdel from a user's contribution history screen rather than going from article to article? --NeilN talk to me 18:25, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

So I guess you mean being able to use the checkboxes to selectively delete revisions? Or mass-revdel? In that case I'm not aware of such a script, but sounds like a good idea. I've got a backlog of technical work right now otherwise I'd be happy to implement it :/ MusikAnimal talk 19:10, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Both. Checkboxes and a "check all" option (then you can uncheck the few you don't want to touch). I'd appreciate it if you could add it to your queue or point me to somewhere else I can ask. Thanks. --NeilN talk to me 19:15, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging a few fellow scripters who might be interested Mr. Stradivarius, Writ Keeper, Timotheus Canens MusikAnimal talk 19:26, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't be too bad, I think. Writ Keeper  23:51, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@NeilN:Well, here's the first draft, such as it is: User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/massRevdel.js. Unfortunately, it looks like the revdel API call won't work on more than one page at a time--if you try to submit revisions from multiple pages for consideration, it'll only actually delete the first. Maybe I'm doing something wrong somewhere, though. Writ Keeper  10:09, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
