See[1] where he makes it clear he is continuing to evade his block. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to activate the filter to see if it catches anything I'm missing. Thanks. Doug Weller talk 11:05, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Doug Weller: Is there a filter already set up for them? It looks like they're mostly targeting their own talk page. Can't we semi it? — MusikAnimal talk 18:16, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
- Oops, my bad, it was Ararat Arev. Never mind. No, this editor frequently socks using multiple IPs, but I doubt that a filter would work. I'll put every article he's edited in 2014 on my watchlist, that's probably the best option. Sometimes his edits are good, frequently they aren't. Sorry to bother you. If the sole response to an aiv report of a user repeatedly removing speedies despite multiple cautions by multiple editors is a note that the article has been deleted, what's the point of cautioning users? Should I go waste my time on something more productive? Shouting at game shows on TV? for (;;) (talk) 17:55, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- @For (;;): It's a great question that doesn't have a great answer. Removing speedy while the article live is certainly disruptive. It means others won't see the tag and can't evaluate the appropriateness of the article. However once the article has been deleted, the disruption has also consequently ended, making a block pointless and punitive. If they continue to recreate the article and it continues to get speedy deleted, and they have no other unrelated contributions, I often am inclined to do a WP:NOTHERE block, or a brief block for disruption, depending on the circumstances — MusikAnimal talk 18:10, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- While I can see your logic it means {{uw-speedy4}} is useless and leaves anyone using it to look like a useless self-important twat. Not a position I enjoy. for (;;) (talk) 18:26, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- @For (;;): Yeah I don't know... I didn't write those templates =P Meanwhile WP:BLOCKDETERRENT is policy so I will adhere to that. There are scenarios where one could conclude the likelihood of recreating the article and resuming with the same behaviour is great enough to warrant a block. Either way you shouldn't feel useless... if it were not for patrollers like you the page would have never been deleted! — MusikAnimal talk 18:34, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

WP:PERM question
You have far more experience in this area than I do, so I'm hoping you'll be willing to answer a question for me. Are non-admin declines like at WP:PERM/C typical practice? ~ Rob13Talk 16:37, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- @BU Rob13: I would object to declines for any permission other than confirmed, as with confirmed it's usually quite obvious and almost always a decline. So yes, we do see many non-admin closures there. Here however I think Hamham31 has declined with the wrong rationale. The user is trying to upload a picture, so they should be encouraged to upload to Commons (where you don't need to be confirmed) or request the image be uploaded at WP:FFU. There is a canned response for this,
{{RFPC|ndf}}
— MusikAnimal talk 16:59, 25 July 2016 (UTC)- @BU Rob13:, nntil MusicAnimal came on the scene, for a very long time I was practically the only admin working at WP:PERM. Chasing away wannabe admins became extremely frustrating and the welcome arrival of MusicBot was one of te reasons I was able to leave PERM alone and hand over to some keen, new admins. However, disruption still comes in the form of some wannabe admins who rather than sticking to vandalism patrol just can't resist poking their noses in everywhere. I never hesitate to point out to such editors that PERM is strictly admin territory, especially those who aren't even native English speakers. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 17:47, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- I've been trying to help out with things I know about (confirmed, extendedconfirmed, AWB, and templateeditor). I'm staying well away from other permissions, which really aren't in my area of expertise. Thanks for the tip. I'm generally all for aggressive expansion of the role of non-admins, but this is one of the few things they quite literally are unable to do anything related to, so declining requests did sort-of rub me the wrong way. (Commenting, of course, should be welcome.) ~ Rob13Talk 17:53, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- @BU Rob13:, For the people we have vested our confidence in for adminship, WP:PERM is not rocket science. What is needed however, is for admins to patrol the requests at PERM often enough to be able to get in with an admin closure before the peanut gallery comes along with its attitude of "Ah, here's something I can do that doesn't need a user right'. NPP suffers from the same syndrome and that's why it's a mess too. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 19:00, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Pagelinks template and redirects
Can the pagelinks (or equivalent) template provide info on the actual redirect page instead of the target page? If so, perhaps the RFPP report portion of Twinkle can be modified so that reports for redirect pages have links that stop at redirect pages (e.g., {{No redirect|Jimbo Wales}}). --NeilN talk to me 21:00, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
- @NeilN: Yeah we could have {{pagelinks}} use {{no redirect}}, if that's what you mean. This is what Twinkle uses, I believe. The other links (edit, history, logs, etc) should go to redirect page as expected. There's about 30,000 transclusions between {{lx}} (mother template) and {{pagelinks}}, so I guess we should seek some rough consensus first — MusikAnimal talk 22:40, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
- The reason why I ask is that if an admin is not paying attention at RFPP, or if the redirect page has a name very close to the target page, the admin winds up evaluating the target page instead. Alternatively, if it's easier, perhaps the reporting code could add a note, saying the page is a redirect? --NeilN talk to me 17:20, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
- @NeilN: Totally, this happens to me a lot, even with User:Anomie/linkclassifier which highlights redirects. I'm thinking maybe we should add a parameter to {{pagelinks}} that will wrap the page name with {{no redirect}}. Seems like it would be uncontroversial and well-received. From there Twinkle could add the param when RFPP reports are made. Unfortunately I won't have the time to work on that right now, and {{page-multi}} (which is translcuded in pagelinks) uses Lua which I'm not that proficient at :/ — MusikAnimal talk 18:18, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- No problem. Whenever you (or someone else with the skills) gets a chance to look into it. --NeilN talk to me 19:42, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure, but I think your protections on the Cultural Marxism section of the Frankfurt School page may have prevented my updates to it going through. I figured it out
Long story, but basically some weird code left over from Yandex meant we weren't loading the right HTML parser, so we were falling back on the crappy built-in one that makes a lot of mistakes. Working of pageviews tool
Hey, MusikAnimal. Could be a stupid question, but I was wondering whether the pageviews tool counts unique visits (i.e. from different IPs or usernames) or all views (for example if I go to an article many times in one day). Thanks for your time. P.S: I can't write a haiku to save my life MediaKill13 (talk) 11:42, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- @MediaKill13: Not a stupid question! I should add this to the FAQ too. It counts each and every pageview, nothing is unique. This is primarily because we are strict about respecting privacy, and collecting such information would undermine this. However we do collect the metric of "unique devices" on a per-wiki basis, which is much more broad (example). Best — MusikAnimal talk 16:23, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
A couple protection items
Hello MA. I hope you are well and that you are having an enjoyable summer. I came across this template {{pp-30-500}}. I know it has been around for some time but, as it is the first time I've seen it, I wanted to make sure your bot is programmed to remove it when necessary. I suspect you've already taken care of this but I did want to double check. The other item to look at is here. This redirect is in the "incorrect protection" cat and I can't edit it to fix that. As ever thanks for your time and cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 18:50, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hey MarnetteD! I don't think pp-30-500 uses the Lua module that would put the page in the maintenance category, so at least for now we don't need to worry about it. No harm in preemptively updating the bot, so thanks for pointing that out nonetheless! I have updated Take the time to use {{pp-full}}. Best — MusikAnimal talk 17:49, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- Much appreciated MA. MarnetteD|Talk 18:00, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Welcoming committee
The paradox with welcomes is that of most maintenance tasks: it attracts very new (and mostly very young) users who put welcome templates on etrulyvery IP and many newly registered accounts that haven't even edited, whie they ignore the users who have made a few truly constructive edits. I didn't get welcomed until I had actually created about five long perfecty clean new articles about wine. I was so naïve in those days I really felt proud of the welcome -I actually thought it had been written by a person and that they had read what I had been doing ! I remember it well, it was placed by Dtrebbien, they only had around 1,000 edits at the time but they knew what they were doing. They're still around, but not much. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 20:11, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Auto-patrolled
Congrats, you're the last admin to post on the request permissions page, so you get bothered with this.
When I create a new page outside main space, mostly by posting warnings on user talks, and only occasionally by posting wikiprojects on new article talks, are those added to new pages feed? If so I'm probably creating a lot of unnecessary clutter. TimothyJosephWood 14:24, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
- (talk page watcher) @Timothyjosephwood: Only mainspace creations are logged at Special:NewPagesFeed, however these other page creations can be marked as patrolled, so I imagine there is a "backlog" of these somewhere. I wouldn't worry about it though -- samtar talk or stalk 14:28, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
- Well...there's ~12k unreviewed pages in userspace right now. But looking through the first 100 or so, it looks like they exclude user talks. So probably nothing to worry about. TimothyJosephWood 14:31, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

TAFI
Good evening, MusikAnimal. I'm Redolta, and I am an active participant in Today's articles for improvement (TAFI), and I noticed that there has been a sudden spike on successful nominations the past few days (nothing wrong with that, that helps TAFI even more). However, we currently have three articles waiting for approval, and no one else is coming along to help it out. If you don't come in a few days, the articles will be marked unsuccessful by your own bot. I already asked another participant but after sometime he has yet to respond. Seeing you were at TAFI today, I request if you can give one minute of your time and give a support for the three articles needing one more support. Thank you, and have a nice day. Redolta📱 Contribs 01:11, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
Oh, almost forgot. Here are the links for the articles needing one more approval:
- @Redolta: No harm in requesting participation in the discussions, but you should not canvass other users for support. This isn't a big deal for a TAFI nom but if you did this at WP:AfD for instance it would be very much frowned upon. Just letting you know! :) Anyway, I'll !vote on the three you nominated accordingly. The bot by the way automatically archives as "unapproved" if there is no feedback after 21 days. So you still have another two weeks, and if someone were to !vote (support or oppose) the clock is reset, or until someone manually closes the discussion. See WP:TAFINOM#Instructions for more. Cheers — MusikAnimal talk 01:29, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- @MusikAnimal: Yes, I am aware of how the bot functions, and thank you for the notification on canvassing. Knowing I can be blocked for these actions, I will no longer ask for (TAFI) supports/opposes to other talk pages. Thank you for the canvassing notice and the supports, and have a nice day. Problems
- Last week Tech News announced you will get a notification when you mention yourself the same way as if someone else had mentioned you. This caused some problems and will happen later instead. [20]
- Creating and editing links to sections on other pages on the wiki now works again in the visual editor. [21]
- For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. This will be fixed soon. [22][23]
Changes this week
- The login session when you choose "Keep me logged in" will now last a year. Previously it was 30 days. This will happen on August 16. [24]
- Some abuse filters will have to be updated during the week. This is because a bug will be fixed. [25]
- In compact language links, two new kinds of languages will be shown in the shorter language list: Languages that are used in the article's text, and languages where the article has a badge like "featured article" or "good article". [26][27]
- The visual editor will be available by default for logged-out editors on Wikipedias that use the Arabic script. It is already default for logged-in editors. [28]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 16. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 17. It will be on all wikis from August 18 (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on August 16 at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Starting the week of August 22 there will be three software deployment windows. They will be at 13:00, 18:00, and 23:00 UTC. This is to have more times when software of the wikis can be updated and make it easier for developers in different parts of the world. [29]

We will also follow up on plans for recent (UN Women!) and upcoming edit-a-thons, and other outreach activities. We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects. After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery!
We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! - @Samtar: Hey! So we used to have stats for each filter indicating the run time and conditions consumed, but it was removed because it, ironically, slowed down editing. phab:T102903 is our best bet to restoring such a feature on enwiki, I think, but as I understand the code isn't well suited to measure performance on-the-fly, rather it needs to be constantly measuring it, hence why it was removed... So anyway, I just try to go by mw:Extension:AbuseFilter/Conditions and my own intuition to find ways to reduce conditions in any way possible. For instance, as you've found, if all the tripped edits are under 100 bytes in size, you can probably get away with edit_delta < 100, etc. Another tip is to try to use regex tests as deep into the conditions as possible, since the regex engine is among the more expensive operations, along with others that have to make database queries. Of course for most filters you're not really going to be able to do anything without regex :) Hope this helps — MusikAnimal talk 00:31, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Geographic location of WP users
Hi MusikAnimal, I was wondering about the Page View tool (or perhaps alternative tools). Is there any way of establishing a broad picture about the geographic location of visitors? For example, at this link [30] for the Kuomintang political party, is it possible to tell which users are visiting the page from, say, Taiwan versus Mainland China or the USA, UK, etc.? I realise individual IP addresses would raise privacy issues, but broad geographic data would be extremely useful. Cheers MatthewTStone (talk) 06:40, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- @MatthewTStone: Unfortunately, I believe geographic information is not publicly provided for the very reason you suspected, which is privacy :/ This information is collected to some degree, and in exceptional cases the Reading team will do some data mining to figure out why there are spikes in traffic, such as phab:T143375. Either way the information would doubtfully ever make its way to a public API, which is what Pageviews Analysis feeds off of. Sorry I can't help you further! — MusikAnimal talk 01:30, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- Cool, thanks anyway. I only just noticed the note at the top of your page about Page View enquiries, so will keep an eye on those pages. MatthewTStone (talk) 03:13, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Hello MusikAnimal! Really tried to make this a haiku but unfortunately I am bereft in this aspect of creativity :(.
I found one of your photos through Google (see the link below). My band and I would love to use and edit the image, including cropping, filtering, and adding our EP and song title text over some of it. We're releasing a 3 song EP, which is a historical rethinking of "Ozymandias" by Percy Bysche Shelley. Per your file license: "You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work)" how would you like to be like to be credited? Would you like your wikipedia handle or your actual name? We plan to credit you on the album cover, which will be available for download by anyone for free.
Please feel free to email me at tmsilver11@gmail.com. Thanks for your wonderful articles and photography.

Recent changes
- The ORES review tool is now available on Special:Contributions as a beta feature. It can make it easier to find contributions that are probably damaging the wikis. The ORES review tool is available on Wikidata and Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish and Russian Wikipedia. [31]
- The

andccnorm
functions have been updated to make it easier to write abuse filters. This also affects the TitleBlacklist extension. You don't have to transform "I" and "L" to "1", "O" to "0" and "S" to "5" anymore. [32] - The old pageview data in the "pagecounts-raw" and "pagecounts-all-sites" files is no longer being updated. You can find the new pageview data here. This happened on August 5. [33]
Problems
- Some big image files could not be thumbnailed. This has now been fixed. [34]
- When you moved a page over a redirect it would delete the redirect without saving it in the logs. This has now been fixed. [35]

Future changes
- Sometimes when you mention another user they don't get a notification. You will be able to get a notification when you successfully sent out a mention to someone or be told if they did not get a notification. This will be opt-in. You can test this on the test wiki. [36][37]
- How you add text after an edit conflict might work in a different way in the future. You can test the prototype. [38]

The link it provided just goes to a string of computer code. Also, van you please check why the page revision stats tool is not working. Thanks. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 09:28, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Kudpung: The bot is trying to show you the specific log entries where the user right was revoked. The computer code you see is just JSON that I thought was easy to read... the "comment" is the only thing that concerns you (the reason it was revoked), and perhaps "user" who is the admin who revoked the right. The alternative is to show this, which is the log entry within the Special:Log interface. I suppose this is favourable, the only thing I found was it was confusing because one might think what you are seeing is the only log entry, when in fact if you look at the URL params, you'll see
offset=20160415214509
which is the datestamp of when the rights change happened, so that only the relevant log entry is shown. We don't want to show all log entries because you might see something like this, where it is very tedious to figure out which log entry is the one that removed the relevant right. Hopefully that makes sense... I'll go ahead and change it to show the specific entry in Special:LogIf by revision stats tool you mean toollabs:xtools-articleinfo, it is working for me. Do you have a link of where it breaks? Sorry I didn't reply to your inquiry above about trying to use it on WP:ANI. That page has an extremely high number of revisions, so I'm not surprised if it breaks (though we should make xTools have a limit of revisions to analyze so that you can at least get some data). Fortunately we can do some simple queries on the database to get what you want. I've created two Quarry datasets: The top 50 admins who edited AN/I since August 30, 2015, and also the top non-admins. Hope this helps — MusikAnimal talk 16:02, 31 August 2016 (UTC)- THank you. The first part is beyond me - people my generation didn't do computers in school - they still had to be invented; in fact I used to think Java script was some simple language developed by the multicultural hippie tourists who go to Bali a lot, so they could communicate with each other. The second stuff, the rock mining, just came 24 hours too late and would have had some interesting consequences for a recent RfA, but never mind, it's extremely interesting reading. Thanks again. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 17:22, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

- Yes my query is flawed... those numbers aren't even right. SQL makes my head hurt! These numbers I'm confident in, which show all users who edited AN/I: [43] — MusikAnimal talk 18:26, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
- Okay I fixed it... all three of the above should be right. For non-admins it was counting for each other user right they had. Need to GROUP BY ug_group and make the user_text DISTINCT — MusikAnimal talk 18:30, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Kudpung and Izno: Boom, this is what you want I think, admins and non-admins combined: [44] — MusikAnimal talk 18:40, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

User:Arley1998
User:Arley1998 has repeatedly vandalized Template:Infobox professional wrestler. Has received 3 warnings in the last 24 hours. Even created an article just about themself Lewin Solomon Jr.. (talk page stalker) CrashUnderride 17:29, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
- Correction: Their half brother. (talk page stalker) CrashUnderride 17:30, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
- One more disruptive edit and I'll block (no vandalism after final warning). Report to AIV if you think enough is enough, perhaps another admin will be less tolerant — MusikAnimal talk 21:27, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
- I probably would have, seeing as I feel like I keep bothering you, but I can never choose between the edits as to which one should be chosen over the rest. (talk page stalker) CrashUnderride 01:09, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
Help!
Sorry for not being able to rhyme, but I need help here! I'm new at AFD and wanted to help out by responding to nominations. However, once I have saved my edit and gone back to today's log, I find my edit is gone. When I go to restore it, I find that the edit is in the source code, but then won't appear when I return to the log. This has now happened on 3 discussions: AquaMobile Swim School Toronto, Rohit Chuahan, and Midwest Electronic Gaming. Any help would be greatly appreciated! UPDATE: It looks like it's just a delay of about ten minutes. Should this be happening, or am I doing something wrong? Joel.Miles925 17:52, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
- I assume you mean Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2016 September 2 when you say "log". This page transcludes the individual discussions, such as Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/AquaMobile Swim School, Toronto. Whenever you view a page that transcludes other pages, you may have to purge the page to see the newest changes, though this will happen automatically eventually, or if someone makes an edit to that page. I wouldn't worry about purging though, just refer to the dedicated discussion pages to see the current state of them. Hope this helps — MusikAnimal talk 18:04, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
I do mean that page. Thanks for the help! Joel.Miles925 18:16, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

Here's a false negative. Without publicly specifying too much detail, may I suggest your change is counterproductive given the nature of the rule? BethNaught (talk) 18:35, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
- @BethNaught: Sorry about that! I've reverted my change — MusikAnimal talk 16:43, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
