Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding cover images

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your response. I fully agree with your rationale - but how do I "just do it"? I've gone to one of the image pages and tried to update the summary and licensing info (adapted from another album page from the same band), and was greeted with a rapid deletion message. The code I used was as follows:

Bay Area WikiSalon series kickoff, April 27

Please join us in San Francisco!
A Wikipedia panel discussion about journalism
Panel discussion at a recent Wikipedia & Journalism event.

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area will gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event in downtown San Francisco:

  • The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
  • Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on this point.

For further details, see here: Wikipedia:Bay Area WikiSalon, April 2016

We hope to see you -- and until then, happy editing! - Pete, Ben & Wayne

DYK for Consairway

On 26 October 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Consairway, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in 1992, civilian employees of Consairway were granted veteran status by the Veterans Benefits Administration for their World War II service transporting munitions and military personnel? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Consairway. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Consairway), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

How do I make my AfC not sound like an advert?

Hi Jim

Thank you for your feedback at the Tea House Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions#How_do_I_make_my_AfC_not_sound_like_an_advert.3F about the AfC Draft:NUGEN Audio.

You said "The draft reads more like a product catalog rather than an encyclopedia article about the company". I can see what you are saying here, so I have added sections on company history, and on awards.

Please - would you be willing to have another look at it and see if these edits are going in the right direction, and if you have any other suggestions for improving the article?

Thanks

PaulTapper (talk) 09:24, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@PaulTapper: Hello. To me, your draft still looks like a company catalog or company brochure, referenced mostly to content generated by company press releases and marketing efforts. Can you point to significant coverage of your company in reliable, independent sources that was not generated by your company's marketing efforts? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:05, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328: Thanks for continuing to help me with this Jim. I believe that quite a few of the external references I've cited in Draft:NUGEN Audio fit that description. For example, the reference (at the moment number 25 for that article) Robjohns, Hugh. "Nugen Audio MasterCheck". SOS Publications Group. Retrieved 20 October 2016. is to an article by Sound On Sound which is a respected paper and online magazine for anyone involved in audio production. The article was published in the paper version of the magazine, and online, but I made the reference to just the online version for convenience. This article was written independently by Hugh Robjohns, one of the journalists who work for SOS, and was not generated by NUGEN Audio's marketing efforts. Do you agree that this reference matches the requirement, or am I missing something? Thanks for your help. PaulTapper (talk) 09:22, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@PaulTapper: That's a product review, not an article about your company as a business. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 14:43, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328: Ok - thanks for the clarification Jim. So would this citation [1] meet the requirements? It's an article in a paper magazine supplement (with online version), independently written, and talks more broadly about NUGEN Audio, not just about some of the products. Sorry that its taking me a while to figure out exactly what's required here - I'm doing my best. PaulTapper (talk) 14:00, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A very good evening to you, Jim!

It was really great to receive your appreciation of the Mineralogy Barnstar. Thank you so much for support. I hope, that soon the Editors, who work hard, contributing to the coverage of mineralogy subjects on Wikipedia, will be awarded by the, belonging precisely to this field of science, genuine Mineralogy Barnstar.

@Chris Oxford: Thanks, you did a really nice job. I had a friend, much older than me, who had a world class collection of gems and minerals. She is gone now. She left some of it to the Napa Valley Museum and some to the California Museum of Gems and Minerals in Mariposa, California. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:53, 30 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Jim,
I think, your friend was a very good person.

A world-class collection of minerals, which she presented to the people, is in the highest degree worthy of being qualitatively photographed, to decorate all the pages of Wikipedia about minerals.

That will be really the best tribute to this lady, and the beauty, that she loved so much, will be discovered by people not only in California, but around the world.
How do you feel about this idea?
All the best.
Regards,

@Chris Oxford: The next time I am in Mariposa, I will stop by the California State Mining and Mineral Museum and take some photos. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 21:05, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jim. That is excellent. Please let me know, when the photos will be in Wikimedia Commons. I'll be glad to help, if it will be necessary, to improve quality, and then we can place images to the pages of the relevant articles. I'll be out fo a while, and will be back in the end of November. Cullem328,

Thank you for your write-up. However, to me it reads as if Tom and I were just a couple of drug addicts who happened to shack up for a decade. It sounds a little cold which is perfectly understandable if Maria Britneva is used as a source, so I'd like to offer some clarifications and background.

We never 'split' up if the meaning is to abandon each other, leave to pursue different lives entirely, never took other lovers for more than one night stands. He did engage a veritable army of bag boys and wrote me October 9, 1976 letter detailing some of these adventures, “For me this has been the summer of the 'hired companions', each somewhat worse than the other, from Christopher Makos to the third and present, a pretentious, untalented poet from Laguna Beach, a trio of grifters, and of course you've probably heard that Madam (the bulldog) is gone. She was DOA at La Guardia . . .”

Our frequent disagreements and arguments, had us 'splitting up' at least a hundred times or more, all of which is detailed in 'An Hundred Years Before the Mast' which by the way is cited nowhere on his page to my knowledge while many books with lots of negativity about me are amply represented and used as references.

The origins of Twerp:

'The Lady Just' (a nickname bestowed on her by Marion Vaccaro, Tom and Frankie's traveling companion throughout Europe in the 50's) and I had a serious dust up in Vienna in late December of 1975 when I told her I'd heard her story and she was nothing but a rich whore. She might have called me twerp during this altercation but I wasn't really listening to her.

She narrates an entirely fictional, superbly humorous, account of this incident in 'Five O'clock Angel': “And thus, while the Twerp was clawing at us through the lift gates, we made our rickety escape.” Of course I write up what actually happened that night in 'An Hundred Years Before the Mast', “She depicts herself as a heroine in a drama that was little more than a sordid exercise in excessively bad taste . . .”

Originally I'd been referred to as 'Enfant Terrible' and Tom first uses this new term of endearment in his January 13, 1976 letter written in San Francisco to The Lady Just: “I am continuing this letter late at night, Twerp sleeping. His latest homage to me is a dose of the clap.”

She first writes the term when he'd accepted the presidency of the 1976 Cannes Film Festival to which she'd invited herself in her letter of April 12, 1976: “My broken foot will have healed in three weeks, when the plaster comes off, so I should be quite agile for Cannes. We will have fun there. My only stipulation, put in writing, is that the little Twerp is not to be along on that trip – let him take a trip of his own, of a different nature, I fear. I really cannot stand his physical appearance, which he can't help, or his atrocious manners, and native vulgarity, which he can.” Along with this she added a little threat and threats didn't play well with Tom: “It all adds up to bad news for our friendship, and who needs the strain . . .” She didn't get that assurance in writing but he replied on April 19: “I can visit you whenever, wherever is convenient to you if Cannes is out. I am more and more inclined to emigrate permanently to Europe . . .”

Few of The Lady Just's letters survived unless she failed to mail them because Tom would read them then toss them in the trashcan because of her bad writing and inability to spell. One she wrote him on January 7, 1977 following my 'misadventure' (attempted suicide) on Half Moon Street in London does: “I was so pleased to get your letter just now . . . I like the end of your letter. 'I love you as ever, but not because you're icy.' I am icy, but only to little twerps. That's the best news, that the Twerp has twerped off. (I went to recover in Veracruz, Mexico) All he contributed was to muck up your visit to London and stop business being done.” She includes a note characteristically designed to build up her bit adding that Tom “. . . complained to a mutual friend that 'although my last letter [to Maria] was rather urgent, I got no response. I sometimes suspect this friendship and concern for me is all a myth that she has constructed. However, this is a suspicion that I'd love to discuss as there's no one else whom I can look to in times of emotional stress.”

In his future letters to her he does continue to refer to me as Twerp or often as not 'you know who' which had been used even when I was called the Enfant Terrible. In the early 80's it was rumored that he had lost much of his affection for her and she did exercise a sort of Rasputinesque grip on him. He might have considered her as partly responsible for our living apart.

By May 15, 1982 Twerp was no longer in use and his letter to her makes it plain: “Well, I am now in Charleston, S.C. Hotel, checking up on Enfant's condition here . . . The Enfant does much better in Charleston than anywhere else. He is unable to afford much drugs on the weekly stipend I give him but manages well, has a nice little apartment, is simply but neatly dressed and has even completed a long new novel which contains no reference to you. I could not consider removing him from here as it seems to be his only favorable environment. Since I am probably the only person who has ever shown him any kindness he has put himself out enormously to please me; loaned me this little Olivetti and a box of typewriter paper. Engaged me a beautiful room with an ocean-view.” This was his final letter to The Lady Just.

His final letter to me on October 27, 1982 (four months before his death) reaffirmed his loss of confidence in ICM's representation, “It is always unsafe to mail anything to I.C.M. Better to Leoncia.” (Leoncia McGee was his Key West housekeeper) I was puzzled by his detailed discussion of the location and disposition of various of my manuscripts, all originals and gifts stored in his Key West studio, but most puzzling was his finishing this letter, “Never turn a destructive impulse on your work or on yourself. There is enough punishment in existence without adding that. - Tennessee” This letter was also a hint of an invitation for us to make another go at it by traveling to Australia together.

We never 'split up' but lived apart from around August 1980 when I moved to Charleston, SC. We still traveled together and he visited me often.

Finally, why aren't the 'partners' put in date order? Pancho Rodriquez came before Frank Merlo.

Sorry to run on and on about what's essentially inconsequential but I was there and lived through it.

Best regards and thanks again,

Robert Carroll rcarroll88@outlook.com

@Robert Carroll: Hello. As a Wikipedia editor, it is my obligation to summarize what a range of reliable, published sources say about the thing I am writing about. The very best sources for a biography of a person who has been dead for decades are book length biographies issued by reputable publishers. I am an encyclopedist not a biographical researcher. It is not my job to study primary sources like correspondence and the personal recollections of participants like you. That is called original research and is not allowed on Wikipedia. As for the drug use, I found many sources that discuss that matter. I did not dwell on it. In conclusion, I found two sources readily available to me that discussed the relationship in detail, and summarized what they said. If you want to point to other published sources, I will take a look. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 16:32, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Interview invitation from a Wikipedia researcher in University of Minnesota

Hello Cullen328,

I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. More details about our project can be found on this meta-wiki page.

I notice you are active in activities related to project page and project talk page, so I wonder if I could invite you for an interview if you are interested in our study and willing to share your experience with us. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via phone, Skype or Google Hangout. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards.

Please reach me at bowen@cs.umn.edu if you are interested or have any questions.

Thank you,

Page deletion warning and deletion of photos

11/20/16 Hi Jim, well after all my hard work, Marchjuly is accusing me of not owning my own photos -- photos that I took, did the artwork on, etc. I'm really feeling persecuted and quite frankly getting really angry. I offered to send him the original tiff photos and working files. I also offered him an affidavit by Tunberg saying they belong to me.Cstwct (talk) 23:39, 20 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

11/20/16 Thank you very much. Your advice is invaluable. I completely redid the page, taking out the external links. I actually found some articles that refer to Tunberg's projects and was able to cite the newspaper or magazine. Not so for several others that were major commissions with phenomenal work. The only proof that exists are actual photos of the artwork, but I took those external links out also and just left the text. Is it OK to include a few external links? I also took out his bio and put a lot of that information into the text with references. Again thank you, thank you. We'll see what happens.Cstwct (talk) 20:56, 20 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

11/17/16 Thank you, Jim. Cstwct (talk) 04:51, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

11/16/16 Hi Jim,

I finally found where to talk directly to my reviewers, thanks to you and your instructions. Click Talk on the left side (not the right), then click New Section. Hopefully I'll be able to resolve these issues directly. Cstwct (talk) 14:08, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

11/15/16 Hi Jim,

I'm new at this. I created the Wikipedia page William Tunberg (artist). Shortly thereafter, I received a warning saying that it was flagged for deletion because of lack of cites and not linking to other pages in Wikipedia. I spent days revising the article and citing. I pulled out boxes, scanned, read old magazines and reviews and cited almost everything. I went through and linked to other Wikipedia pages (tons of links). When I finished, I read the instructions with the template that said I could delete if the problems are fixed. I deleted and this morning the template saying it's a candidate for deletion came back. That the page will be discussed and a consensus reached. I left several messages for the reviewer to please re-review and haven't heard back. I don't know if the reviewer is seeing my messages.

Also, I uploaded a photo of Tunberg and used the non-free method. It was deleted. I used the free method because I'm one of the owners and it got deleted for copyright violation. I left a message in the free Wiki section but haven't received a response.

How do I get that warning off the page? How do I get the photos up without problems? All I get are vague messages. I'm unfamiliar with the layout of Wikipedia so I don't know how I can directly communicate with the reviewers who are deleting me to understand specifically what they want me to do.

Thank you. CamilleCstwct (talk) 03:20, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Cstwct: Hello. When an article is listed at Articles for Deletion, you must not remove that notice until the debate has been completed. Removing that notice repeatedly is considered disruptive editing, so please do not do that again.
As for uploading a photo, you can only do that if you are the indisputable copyright holder, and are willing to release the photo under a Creative Commons license. If you do not hold the copyright, then the copyright holder (and no one else) must freely license the image, in writing, in a legally acceptable form. We do not allow a non-free photo of a living person since a free photo is always possible. This is a free content project. But I would not worry about the photo when the article itself is nominated for deletion. I suggest that you put the photo on the back burner.
The body of this article is filled with external links that appear to be references, but are not. All of these external links should either be transformed into properly formatted references or removed. Do this promptly if you want to save this article. Please read Referencing for beginners and follow its recommendations.
The most important thing for you to do is to demonstrate in the text of the article that this person meets our notability guideline for artists. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:54, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Meopa, who is "we" in this context?
Also, it would make this huge list rather easier to handle if you were to remove, or separate out, things that would not be considered independent reliable sources by Wikipedia's standards. Such as, blogspot, linkedin, rateyourmusic, lastfm, wordpress, and anything similar. On the other side of the fence, Variety at least is considered a reliable source on entertainment topics. Woman artist

Hi Cullen, I am editing a Wikipage for a woman artist who passed away last year. I think I have a good start and would like to invite others in her community to help me complete the page with their info and photos. How do I go about inviting them? I'm completely new to this! Thanks, Nancy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nmsart (talkcontribs) 19:31, 20 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Cullen328. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim.

Thank you for taking a look at Draft:LedgerLite. I don't have any control over the sources I have linked to in the Reviews section. These were unsolicited. The first four links in the Reference section are also unsolicited and outside my control. I have not sought to promote LedgerLite apart from its website and the social media channels, Facebook and YouTube.

However I believe the software is notable for the reason that it's simpler than most other accounting software yet it's still being used by organisations in many different countries and has been for the last eleven years. We have plenty of information on our website to support this but (of course) our website is not an independent source. Unfortunately a simple piece of software is unlikely to ever attract the attention of the mainstream media or academia. In any case, thank you for taking the time to look at the article I wrote.
