Biography

Jimin at a fanmeet in Cheongnyangni on July 6, 2013

Jimin was born on October 13th,1995 in Busan, South Korea. His family members consist of a mother, father and a younger brother. Before his debut with BTS, Jimin studied at the Busan High School of Arts [2] as a top student in the modern dance department.

He auditioned for Big Hit after his dance teacher from his high school recommended him to audition in an entertainment company.

After his debut, while recording for the New Yang Nam Show on the 23th of February 2017, an old video of Jimin dancing contemporary along with a message from his dance teacher cheering him on and praising his dancing skills were revealed.[3]

Pre-debut

Jimin has been a part of the Busan dancing scene since middle school. He made a local name for himself by joining many street dance groups as well as winning multiple talent competitions with his singing skills too. He was also enrolled as a top student in Busan High School of Arts.[4] He was recruited from his local province of Busan as part of Big Hit's "Hit It" auditions in 2010 and 2011 to be a part of Bangtan Boys. He was the last one to join and become a member of BTS. As a trainee, Jimin along with his members J-Hope and Jungkook released two unofficial songs Graduation Song using the track of Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa ft. Bruno Mars's song Young, Wild and Free,[5] Beautiful using the track of 'Beautiful' by Mariah Carey ft. Miguel with V, J-Hope and Jungkook[6] and 95 Graduation with V using the track of 'Old School Love by Lupe Fiasco ft. Ed Sheeran[7]. Before Jimin's debut, he was suggested a lot of stage names such as Baby J and Young Kid but finally decided to go along with his own name.

Career

2013–present: BTS

Jimin only trained for a year before debuting as a member of BTS on June 13, 2013, on Mnet's M Countdown, at the age of 17, with the track "No More Dream" from their debut album 2 Cool 4 Skool.[8]. Jimin was first credited for contributing to writing lyrics for the song "Fun Boyz" in ''The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1''. He also contributed for writing lyrics for the song "Lie", his first solo song since BTS's debut, which charted at 2 on the Melon Chart where BTS's Wings and Young Forever had taken up the top 16 places. 'Lie' also charted at 3 on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales Chart besides the title track Blood, Sweat and Tears which charted at number 1. Jimin has also released, unofficially, a cover of You're My' with fellow BTS bandmate, J-Hope, Jin, V, and Jungkook[9] using the track of Taylor Swift's remake song 'Last Christmas' as well as a cover of Christmas Day with his fellow member Jungkook using the track of Justin Bieber's song Mistletoe.[10]

Solo work

Jimin was featured in GLAMS music video for their title song Party (XXO) on 19th July, 2012.[11]

Jimin's first solo song Lie was released together with BTS's second full length album Wings on October 10, 2016, and it made an impressive debut, being the highest charting Wings solo song, reaching the 3rd spot on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales. [12]. Jimin first performed Lie during KBS's Song Festival Gayo Daejukjae 2016, on December 29, 2016, choreographed by Markus Pe Benito.[13] [14]

Also during KBS's Song Festival Gayo Daejukjae 2016 (December 29, 2016), he collaborated with singer Lee Taemin, performing a remix of Shinee's 1 of 1 and BTS's Blood Sweat and Tears.[15]

On SBS Gayo Daejun 2016 (16th November, 2016), Jimin performed a contemporary dance for the song Pin-Up Girl along with WJSN's Lee Luda and Chengxiao, VIXX's N, Twice's Mina and Momo and Lovelyz's Yein.

Popularity

Jimin is popular among his fans as well as the idols. On 2016 Idol Star Athletics Championships, idol stars voted on who was the most popular not with fans, but among themselves on the topic "The idol who I wish was waiting for me at the finishing line" where Jimin was voted most among the male idols.[16] He is also included in the Top 20 popular idols in various polls.[17][18]
