Retired?

Can this be true? Very sorry if so, but maybe a bit of a rest will see you willing to return. Cheers, Johnbod (talk) 17:31, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I second that. Please do come back! Eddie891 Talk Work 00:42, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If it's official this time, then you will be missed. Snuggums (talk / edits) 20:06, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Very sorry to see you go. You've done some remarkable work and The World Contest was an amazing achievement. Hope you come back some time. The Drover's Wife (talk) 21:53, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. This is most unfortunate. I hope to see you back sometime, though I understand the need for a break, Lord knows. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:24, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
the desert is a good place for introspection
I wonder if this disappearance (I didn't count, but remember a time when I maintained your DYK records, Dr. Blofeld) has to do with my response on the talk of St. Lubentius, Dietkirchen? I hope not. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:33, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

R-Retired? Blofeld? What...? This doesn't bode well. I hope it isn't permanent. –Vami_IV✠ 23:03, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. B. you are an icon around here. You were the first to tally up more than 1,500 articles for DYK, and then you initiated and ran the enormously successful World Contests. We need you to stay as the face of Wikipedia! Yoninah (talk) 00:09, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Adding my voice to this. Hope you're reading this to see the voices clamouring for your return. I'm not sure what may have prompted your sudden retirement, but whatever it is, these things come and go on Wikipedia usually. Things happen that seem to make no sense, and we lose faith for a while, but ultimately what we're doing is so beneficial that it's worth sticking around for. And your contests like the Africa destubathon went over and beyond that, because they were catalysts for much larger numbers of editors to dive in and improve vital vital areas of the site. I very much hope we'll see you back to continue that good work.  — Amakuru (talk) 22:47, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Shocked to here about the retirement! No notice. No farewell. What impression it will have on those newcomers who are enthusiastic to make their contributions. You have to come back.... else discouraging us all.  MehrajMir (talk) 15:06, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to see it Doc - and I hope it will turn into a break, rather than full retirement. I know how you feel though; there seems to be a fair amount of grudge-bearing and pettiness, and a lack of focus on actually building an encyclopaedia. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 19:36, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Retired!

"No. That's not True! That's impossible!" Yeh nahi ho sakta! First Jaguar, now your good self! But I know why you chose this decision and I knew it took a toll on all of us, you most of all. As SchroCat mentioned, I hope it turns out to be a wikibreak as no one deserves it more. If thats so, then please come back soon. I will always cherish the endeavours on which we collaborated together (like Rod Steiger, for instance). It was indeed an honour and a privilege to have known you, Dr. Blofeld.  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 15:02, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ssven2: Please don't link to bootleg YouTube uploads of film clips. The quote is recognizable enough by itself, anyway.
And Dr. Blofeld -- shit, that is a loss for the project ... Hope to see you back some day!

@Orland: The article was created in 2007. The webpage you link to is dated 2008. Who copied who? --NeilN talk to me 21:52, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
While I couldn't find hard evidence that this page is a copyvio (although it certainly looks that way, that "2008" page was regularly updated over the years, originated apparently earlier than 2008, and gives me the impression of being the original for the text, not a copy after us), it seems clear from looking at Blofeld's early creations that he was involved in copyvio. This is not a Blofeld article but a copy of the book jacket (see e.g. here.
Similarly, This seems to be a copy of this 2006 BBC page. The copy remained on that page until it was merged two years later, so this is not some "I copy and then rewrite" error but a clear copyvio.
I fear that we may have to start a CCI on Dr. Blofeld, which is nearly impossible as he has created countless articles. I'll try to find some further examples next week or so. Fram (talk) 15:53, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we have a major problem. this is in many parts a copy of this 1992 book, which makes the copyvio crystal clear. It seems that all his early larger articles (i.e. not the geography stubs) are copyvios. Hopefully most text no longer remains in the articles, but this still is a major problem. Fram (talk) 16:23, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fram: Let's open a CCI. I think Dr. Blofeld is amazing, but its better people clean the edits up, rather than leaving them. Eddie891 Talk Work 19:49, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Orland, I don't think you can be exactly right here, as authorscalendar.info was not created until 28 October 2014. I'm not necessarily saying the initial content from the page was not copied, but it certainly wasn't copied from there. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:43, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
But this dates from before the creation of our article. Damn. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:49, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As I've been alerted of this offwiki. The only articles I can think of which might have vios are those Finland writer bios from that site or any larger length article created within the the early period using books, thinking that we could legally host existing content for some reason. I remember the Finland bios and thought that source was freely copiable at the time and barely remember anything that old. Some of my very earliest articles may have problems before I even knew about our copyright guidelines or even how to source or even really knew what Wikipedia was actually. To immediately assume I'm a serial vio offender, the bot would have picked up on it if I was anyway. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:02, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article under discussion here was created by you on 14 April 2007 with the edit summary: "hold your breath everybody check this out for a new article!!". In the comment above, User:Justlettersandnumbers has linked to a web archive copy of a page from the website www.kirjasto.sci.fi from 8 February 2007. It appears the author of those biographies is a Petri Liukkonen, see here, who is Director of The Kuusankoski Library, Finland. He is also mentioned in Template:Books and Writers, which may explain what has happened here. I will pop a note on the AN thread. Carcharoth (talk) 11:17, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WP:AN discussion started

As this is potentially too huge to handle easily, I have raised this issue at WP:AN#Our most prolific article is (or was) a copyright violator.... Fram (talk) 21:14, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Fram, if you're using this to get the micro stubs deleted, go ahead and delete them all if you wish. At least remember me for the good content I created.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:32, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is beyond belief. If ever you have considered coming out of retirement, this surely has thrown a very heavy spanner into that kettle of fish.
Keep safe, my friend! ‑ ‑ Gareth Griffith‑Jones The Welsh Buzzard ‑ ‑ 11:16, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
