This is a list of Philippines' representatives and their placements at the Big Four international beauty pageants, considered the most important in the world. Philippines has won in all four pageants with a total of fifteen victories:
- Four — Miss Universe crowns (1969 • 1973 • 2015 • 2018)
- One — Miss World crown (2013)
- Six — Miss International crowns (1964 • 1970 • 1979 • 2005 • 2013 • 2016)
- Four — Miss Earth crowns (2008 • 2014 • 2015 • 2017)
History
The Philippines inherited beauty pageants from Spain and United States who colonized the country for nearly four centuries combined, but it was during the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos and his First Lady, Imelda Marcos in the 1970s when pageants really took off.[1]
The first official beauty pageant in the Philippines was held during the 1908 Manila Carnival.[2][3] A decade after the Philippine Revolution ended in 1898, when the Philippines obtained independency from Spain but was turned over as a colony to the United States, the Manila Carnival was organized to celebrate American and Philippine relations,[2] and to exhibit achievements in commerce and agriculture.[3] In search for the Carnival Queen, the pageant was the carnival’s most-awaited event, which served as the commencement of the Philippines’ relationship with the world of pageantry.[4] The Carnival Queen was held annually from 1908-1938.[3]
In 1926, the Manila Carnival conceptualized and held the first national beauty pageant using the title Miss Philippines to represent the Philippine islands, contestants came from all over the country with the sub-titles Miss Luzon, Miss Visayas, and Miss Mindanao. The popularity of the new competition ended the Carnival Queen title in 1938.[5]
Philippines first hosted one of the Big Four pageants through the Miss Universe 1974 and the success of the show put the Philippines' place on the beauty world stage and influenced future generations to take part in beauty pageants.[1] Pageant winners are considered 'important public figure' in the Philippines with several public appearances, and winning a major crown is viewed as coming with big responsibilities in which the titleholders need to be a good role model to young girls who looked up to beauty queens.[6]
The Philippine franchise holders of the four major beauty pageants are the following:
- Stella Araneta— Binibining Pilipinas for Miss Universe Philippines and Miss International Philippines. [7]
- Arnold Vegafria — for Miss World Philippines.[8]
- Ramon Monzon and Lorraine Schuck's — tandem of Miss Earth Philippines.[9]
The criteria for the Big Four inclusion are based on specific standards such as the pageant's global prominence and prestige approved by worldwide media; the quality and quantity of crowned delegates recognized by international franchisees and pageant aficionados; the winner's post pageant activities; the pageant's longevity, consistency, and history; the sincerity of the pageant's specific cause, platform, and advocacy; the overall pre-pageant activities, production quality and global telecast; the enormity of internet traffic; and the extent of popularity amongst pageant fans across the globe.
