And unbelievably, people are trying to revert it from the ANI. Talk about not learning lessons. WP finally detects a sock that's evaded detection because people blindly revert 'evil socks' like me, and when I post a closing statement explaining why that took so long, and naming all the people involved who are to blame (as you seemed to want to know), they revert that! I really sympathise if you're contemplating figuriong out how to fix these obviously systemic flaws. TFAR notice

Please see Wikipedia:Today's_featured_article/requests#May_7. I nominated to WP:TFAR an article you had successfully co-nominated at FAC, Albert Ball.

Thank you for your high-level quality improvement contributions to Wikipedia,

Interaction ban, ask first then wait principle

Dear Carcharoth, I agree with the ideas you present. It was/is not my intention to break any interaction bans. My primary concern is the continuation of slanderous accusations directed against me. These accusations date back to at least July 2013 (8 months!), and they have been going on non-stop. Arbitrators and administrators have issued various warnings, to several users, to put down the stick and move on with their editing.
Nonetheless, these warnings have done nothing to stop these users from consistently insulting me and/or breaching the interaction bans. I have taken my situation to ArbComm and AN/I (which was suggested by arbitrators), but nothing has come out of it.
Instead, what consistently happens is that these editors resort to WP:TLDR walls of text again arguing a case that has already been closed and archived. Regardless of whether their assessment is right or wrong, arbitrators and administrators have told these users to stop with the slander.
I am tired of the insults and perplexed by the lack of concrete actions against the slander. Please help me.--MarshalN20 Talk 00:16, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for the late reply. I am about to go on a long wiki-break, so I won't be able to follow this up any further. I hope my colleagues will be able to deal with this both to your satisfaction and those of the others involved in this. Carcharoth (talk) 00:09, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

DNB antiquarians

I have just done a topical list, Wikipedia:WikiProject Dictionary of National Biography/Antiquarians. Mixed bunch, but I found some missing FRSs there, among other things. Charles Matthews (talk) 17:54, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Charles. Mixed bunch, as you say. When I get back from my imminent wiki-break, I hope to have a closer look at some of those and other missing FRS people. Carcharoth (talk) 00:10, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

After a long reprieve from the article, I got back into it last night. If you get a moment have a quick loom over. Pretty sure it's up to GA now. But a ce wouldn't hurt-Labattblueboy (talk) 15:47, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Labattblueboy. The changes looked fine in the time I had to look (the additional pictures looked good, though I was a bit sad to see the Civilian Roll of Honour picture drop off). I've not had a chance to look in on the GA nomination, but best of luck with that. I'll try and look at the article again when I get back from my wiki-break. Well, that and trying to work out which of various memorial pictures from Commons might be useful on en-WP or not (if I can work out what the images were showing before the deletions) - nothing to do with the CWGC article, but just a general note to myself to remember to try and follow that up. Carcharoth (talk) 00:14, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I actually liked the idea of including an image of the roll. I was actually inclined to put it in a multi-image box with an image of a traditional memorial to contrast the different concepts. However, I was worried it would take too much space. Thoughts?--Labattblueboy (talk) 01:01, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There are lots of images potentially available in a topic like this. Working out which ones to use where is not easy. Try things out and change them if they don't work. I won't be around to reply further right now, as I'm just about to put up wikibreak notices. Carcharoth (talk) 01:07, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Motto of the Day Help Request April 2014

Today's motto...

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface, but always paddling underneath.

Nominate one today!

Motto of the Day (WP:MOTD) is in a state of emergency and really needs your help! There are not enough editors who are reviewing or nominating mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review, and this probably means that you will notice a red link or “This space for rent” as our mottos for the next weeks and months.

Please take a moment to review the nominations and nominate your own new mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review and Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/'Specials. Any help would be appreciated! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This message has been sent by pjoef on behalf of Motto of the Day to all editors of the English Wikipedia who are showing MOTD's templates on their pages, and to all the participants to MOTD: (page, template, and category).

Was Voltaire wrong about William Penn's 1683 treaty with the Lenape Indians?

There is a discussion here about William Penn's 1683 treaty with the Lenape Indians, and specifically whether Voltaire's famous quote ("...a treaty never written, never broken") from his 1764 Dictionnaire philosophique was incorrect. Could you please take a look at it? Thanks! --Guy Macon (talk) 16:51, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's United States ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Washington, D.C. Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Canada Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Minas Gerais Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Nepal Czar (submissions) and Indiana Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Precious again

thoughts
Thank you for giving your precious time to thoughts, and for sharing them, thoughts on a BLP, on paid editing, and "how letting personal animosity and dislikes get in the way of the bigger picture ... destroys trust"- repeating: you are an awesome Wikipedian (30 December 2008)!

Two years ago, you were the 122nd recipient of my PumpkinSky Prize, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:29, 13 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On the birthday of Richard Strauss, I added Ernst Roth to my user page ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:39, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reminder, Gerda. I've taken more photos since then (on a different camera!), but have still been very tardy in getting the last of the photos off the old one. I am only popping in now and again until I can get back to full activity. Will get various photos uploaded then. Carcharoth (talk) 20:21, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your prompt response, - I was prepared for weeks or months of silence. Proudly singing, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:37, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the weeks of silence (hopefully not months) will return soon when things get busy again here, but it is nice to feel able in most cases to pick things up again from where they were left. Though not in all cases, sadly. Carcharoth (talk) 21:30, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You will know what's more important ;) - I just remembered the witch pardoned 300 years later, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:02, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2014 June newsletter

After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.

The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to Florida 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions).

The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
