January 2006[edit]

Where?[edit]

Votes for downtown[edit]

What do you think? Add your vote here.

Votes for elsewhere[edit]

  • I vote for York University. I bet I can arrange space for the meetups in the York University Computer Club / Engineering Society @ York shared office. --unforgettableid | talk to me 20:05, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think? Add your vote here.

Yes, I have spoken at York recently; it is great! (CJB)

When?[edit]

I'd rather it not be on a Wednesday, just because of my schedule; (I know, selfish)> Tuesday would work bettter for me, if a weeknight was neccesary. How about a weekend? СПУТНИКССС Р 13:02, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's not selfish; that's practical. The goal is to find a day that's good for everyone, plus only several Tor. Wikipedians even know about this. Saturdays are bad for me. Are Tuesdays or Sundays better than Wednesdays for most people? --unforgettableid | talk to me 16:05, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think? Do you agree? Disagree? Add your vote here.

Closer onto a weekend would be nice for folke travelling - between Fri Eve & Sun Eve ? Bridesmill 00:18, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For me personally, Sunday evenings are ok. Would you be likely to come at that time? Do other people prefer one way or the other? Cheers, --unforgettableid | talk to me 05:36, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Take that meetup.com![edit]

Hahaha, meeting on the net using free groups is so much better Tyciol 20:01, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Imagine if there was a Meetup-like site, say, "MeetupWiki". It could put Meetup.com out of business! --unforgettableid | talk to me 20:07, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That is actually a pheasable project, something someone could start up on Wikicities. We can do a lot of this on Wikipedia itself, for Wikipedia/Wikimedia-related meetups, though. Freeness would be an awe-inspiring difference between us and Meetup. There was a Meetups.com thing for Toronto Wikipedians, closed due to price. -- user:zanimum
Did any Toronto Meetup.com meetup actually ever happen? Also, re. Wikipedia-related meetups: if we got all Wikipedia meetups to move to MeetupWiki, then that would provide a starting push towards critical mass. Anyway, I went to wikicities and filled out a form. I requested meetup.wikicities.com. Should I move us there if the request is granted? --unforgettableid | talk to me 20:56, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I found out there's http://events.wikicities.com which someone already started. Should we move there? --unforgettableid | talk to me 16:06, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. But just a reminder, we hope to have wikimedia.ca up and running for this sort of thing in a few weeks. -- user:zanimum
Wikimedia.ca? Much as I like canadian sites... do we really need it? Wikimedia.org is pretty worldwide, after all. Tyciol 05:45, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So was this discussion moved, or did it just die out? Arctic Gnome 21:38, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to have died out. 1. Nobody decided on a firm date and location. 2. It wasn't announced to enough people. I never ended up downloading AutoWikiBrowser and announcing it to all of Category:Wikipedians in Toronto. --unforgettableid | talk to me 05:33, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mass commenting: rude?[edit]

Would it be considered rude spamming to send the following comment to all the Category:Wikipedians in Toronto? Hi. Are you interested in Toronto Wikipedia Meetups? If so, please add Wikipedia:Meetup/Toronto to your watchlist and help us choose a place and time on the talk page. Regards, ~~~~ Cheers, --unforgettableid | talk to me 20:05, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't think so. Especially when it's the first time. If you were a user who didn't want to participate in meetups, the second time receiving such a message would be annoying, third time would be aggrivating, and past that would just be spam. But the first time is purely a service. I'd also appreciate if the message mentioned Wikimedia Canada's founding. -- user:zanimum

Mass commenting: who?[edit]

Is anyone willing to do the mass commenting, or to run a bot to do it? I would not be the first one to volunteer. :-) --unforgettableid | talk to me 20:05, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Or, does someone here use Windows and so could run the AutoWikiBrowser? I'm pretty sure it can mass-comment to all users who are members of Category:Wikipedians in Toronto. --unforgettableid | talk to me 06:27, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August 2006: Lets get together![edit]

I think we should all sit down and drink and eat and what not. I propose a meetup at Future Bakery, on the corner of Brunswick and Bloor, on Wed. August 16, 2006 @ 7pm. Lets discuss it. joshbuddy, talk 15:03, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Huzzah! --Arctic Gnome 22:46, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me --Dhodges 05:27, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. Sadly I can't attend nighttime Wikimeets, as I'm in Brampton, which doesn't have GO service past the afternoon, thus getting home would take at least three hours on two transit systems. However, if I could get the one press outlet to attend, would anyone attending object to that, on the condition they aren't intrusive or abrasive (aka they don't ruin the night)? I'd like to try to get City/Global/CFTO interested in doing a little piece on Wikipedia, with this as the example. -- Zanimum 18:55, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I would advise against inviting the press to our first meetup; if we invited them some later time when we all knew each other we would look much more organized and professional. --Arctic Gnome 00:14, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm up in Richmond Hill, York Region, probably can't attend on weeknights without proper planning, need to coordinate the transit and subway systems and figure how close they are to this place. Will you be using this as a regular meetingplace? If it's going to shift a lot then I'll need to plan each over again. Anyway, it will have to be a future one, I totally forgot about this. Tyciol 19:51, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for organizing but I won't be able to attend this one. Samw 03:15, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nice idea. I also agree with Arctic G on NOT inviting the press or media. Any public appearance shall be appealing and professional and the first casual gathering doesn't appear to be one. Is that bakery more or less like a cafe? I am not a fan of coffee. I.H.S.V. (talk) 02:53, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is a bakery + cafe like qualities + hungarian food. I believe Wednesday night is all-you-can-eat pierogi night. Regrettably, I have to work that night, but I've thinking of trying this idea out monthly, so I'm sure I'll be there next time. joshbuddy, talk 03:01, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Count me in. I.H.S.V. (talk) 19:45, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone else actually coming? I'll be there. (I often drop in for some cake and coffee anyway) -Dhodges 13:26, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try to make it. The Tuesday thing doesn't work for me (priors interfere) but Wed is good and Future is right around the corner from my place. 7 might be a little early if the weathers good (I'll be on the bike) but we'll see what happens. Maury 16:16, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, there was a meetup between me, another editor and his female companion as I saw the guy looking alike this man. Not sure if Dhodges had arrived and left. -- Ktsquare (talk) 23:00, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

August 2007: Planning a new meetup[edit]

Wikipedia:Meetup/Toronto

(This section is now for discussion, if you want to tell us you availability, scroll down this page until you see a sub-section named "Availability") Hello everyone, I'm planning to have a meetup in Toronto. The current one is held in a downtown Toronto pub on first Tuesday of each month. I want a Wikipedia meetup where it is more convinent to other Wikipedians and all-age appropriate. Tuesday evening is not convinent to those who are still in school (i.e. high school & university). In my opinion, the venue is not too good for minors (under 19) and quite far away from other communities such as Richmond Hill, Markham, and Scarborough.

Since I want the meeting to be available to as many people as possible, I believe it should be held on Saturday or Sunday. Venue to be decided as well. If you are interested, please leave a note here.

(Optional) You can suggest venues as well as which city/town you live in so that the venue can be available to the most Toronto Wikipedians. OhanaUnitedTalk page 13:32, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I work weekday evenings and nights, so either on a weekday before 2pm, or a weekend would work best for me. I'm near the downtown, so would prefer something not up in North York/Miss/Scarb Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 19:16, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I good with Saturdays but not Sundays. I live in North York, but I work and go to school around the downtown core so I would prefer something downtown and somewhere near UofT and the Government Blocks on Bay and Wellesley. And no bars...for now.... Nat Tang ta | co | em 22:08, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would prefer weeknight evenings somewhere downtown. It would be nice to meet some of you!Ian Bailey 14:02, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Like I said, weeknights are not convinent to everyone, especially students. OhanaUnitedTalk page 16:08, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, not true for UofT Students...a grand majority of our courses are from Monday to Thursday so there's always Friday...unless of course you're a student thats taking first-year economics...then you've got classes on Friday...anyways...I with OhanaUnited this one...I would prefer Satudays than something on a weeknight.
I wish to attend the meetup, but I am a UofT student and I am very busy with real life. However, I have a suggestion for the location. I was thinking of inside the first or second floor of Robarts Library in the UofT. Johnny Au 17:25, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a UT Scarborough student and live in Richmond Hill. It would be best if the meeting is held in uptown or Richmond Hill/Markham. OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:50, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think Johnny's proposal is a good one and I like it because as a UofT student with a job downtown it's convienient, but as a compromise maybe the North York Central Reference, North York Civic Centre, or Fairview Mall...I know...not the greatest alternatives, but its somewhere in the middle...I can't think of anywhere else... Nat Tang ta | co | em 18:29, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I also work weekday evenings, so if we want both myself and Sherurcij there, it will have to be on a weekend. I like in Etobicoke but can get anywhere in Toronto or Mississauga without much effort, though Scarborough would be a bit far. --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 21:41, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just a side note...Toronto is a candidate for Wikimania 2008. Here's the draft bid page. Most of the stuff is regurgitated from our 2006 bid, so if you have the time take a look at it and update it accordingly. It would also be nice if you guys could help out with the bid. Thanks. Nat Tang ta | co | em 18:29, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I like the pub idea myself, and I have no problem with a Tuesday night. Abebenjoe 01:50, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Abebenjoe, the problem with that is that 1)a Tuesday night, not a good night for a university or high school student (along with most of the weeknights) and 2) high school and some university students can't be legally in a pub. Remember, we need to try to include everyone in these meetups, that is why the new proposal is sometime during the weekend and somewhere where everyone can meet. Nat Tang ta | co | em 02:00, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Are you guys ready for intense discussions? I'm going to post a notice on community portal to get more Torontoians attention. Remember to watch this page, as discussions may progress quite rapidly. Please fill up the following to be more organized and allow easier analysis. OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:08, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We can still go to a pup-restaurant that lets in underage people, like a Firkin. Also, I imagine that evenings should be okay for people with school or work the next day as long as it doesn't go really late. --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 18:55, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Toronto reference library! aeymxq 20:14, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Artic.gnome, there are lots of pubs that allow youths in and have good menus. I suggest the Ferret and Firkin at 720 Spadina Ave, at Spadina and Bloor Streets, less than a two minute walk from the Spadina Subway. Another possibility would be the Fox Firkin at Yonge and Eglinton, about two minutes from the Eglinton Subway Station.--Abebenjoe 21:32, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Spadina and Bloor would be excessively convienent for me, so much so I'd almost have to come. WilyD 15:31, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm good with that...Nat Tang ta | co | em 05:10, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, to get the ball on this to actually roll, can we suggest a meetup place/time and actually commit to having people there? It seems like weekends, near a subway station are our best bet. About about the afternoon of September 2 (the sunday) at this Ferrat and Firkin place? WilyD 18:27, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps the saturday instead cause I can't make it on sunday... nattang 18:35, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, maybe. I can't make the second, personally though. I'll be out of town (Port Hope, I think) WilyD 18:41, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Guys, keep in mind that this will be more than just 1 meetup, but recurrent meetups. OhanaUnitedTalk page 21:45, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds fine by me (Sunday, September 2 at 1:00 p.m.0, and that goes for future meetings. I'm attending from the western part of the city, so a central downtown location is great (and its underage friendly too, though that doesn't apply to me;-).--Abebenjoe 07:21, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, Sunday September 2, 2007 we'll meet at the Ferrat and Firkin at 1:00 pm? How will we recognise each other? I'm not keen on running around the place yelling "Hello? I'm from the internets?" WilyD 13:35, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well I can't make it... :( ....nor will I be able to make it to any of them if its on a Sunday...so...someone's gonna have to fill me in on what was discussed... nattang 03:48, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll print a sign saying Wikipedia meet-up. Not sure how busy the place will be on a long weekend, likely it will be not too busy. There is a large table near the north side of the bar that can accommedate about 10 people. If we are going to be more than that, we may need to inform the management. Too bad Nat can't make it, I'd like to have met him. Maybe the next one will be on a Saturday.--Abebenjoe 04:18, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, okay, a sign's good - I actually believe I'll recognise one of the people who's expressed interest. That said - I'm not sure I'll be able to make it. I have to talk it over with my romantic partner, eh? WilyD 14:45, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Judging by the list below I would assume more people can make it on Saturday, so I propose to move it back one day to Saturday, Sept. 1. Same "bat time", same "bat channel." Is that more convenient for everyone?--Abebenjoe 03:08, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
yup...move it back :D nattang 04:01, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DATE CHANGE Since it seemed that only I could confirm for Sunday, and seeing that at least Nat can make it Saturday, I am changing the meet-up day to Saturday, September 1st. Please indicate if you plan to attend either here or in the chart below.--Abebenjoe 22:39, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So what happened in the last one? –Pomte 17:12, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, since it was just Abebenjoe, another editor, and myself, and being the fact that Abebenjoe and I are both members of a political party and working on different campaigns, we naturally talked about Ontario politics, the Ontario elections article, the difficulties we have to deal with on Wikipedia and the different geopolitical areas of the project, and I believe thats it. nattang 18:01, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, the another editor mentioned in Nat's September 26, 2007's post was me. -- Ktsquare (talk) 22:26, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

February 2011 Meet-Up[edit]

Sue Gardner, the Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation, will be in Toronto from Sunday, February 6-Tuesday, February 8 and would like to attend a meet-up of local and Canadian Wikipedians. This page is the beginning of planning for the event. If you are interested to attend or have suggestions for location, date/time please add them below. Please try to add your information before by January 15, so we can determine a final location.

Wikimedia Canada Executive[edit]

The executive of Wikimedia Canada is planning to have an in-person meeting, likely on Saturday, Oct. 1 in central Toronto. If we could meet with Toronto Wikipedians at the same time it will be really great. The difficulty is that Alan, the executive member from the area has unrelated commitments that make it impossible for him to organize any get together. If there is some one in the area who could put something together that would be really great. Let me know on my talk page. Eclecticology (talk) 06:48, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Loves Libraries[edit]
