Mary Pierce was the defending champion, but she did not compete this year due to a back injury.[1]

Jennifer Capriati defeated Kim Clijsters 1–6, 6–4, 12–10 in the final to win the Women's Singles title at the 2001 French Open. This would be the last time until 2014 in which the women's final would be decided in three sets.[2]

Clijsters became the first Belgian woman to reach the final of a Grand Slam, having won an all-Belgian semifinal against Justine Henin.[3]

This was the first Grand Slam tournament in which future Wimbledon 2013 champion Marion Bartoli competed in the main draw.[4] It was also the French Open debut of 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone; she reached the quarterfinals, which was her best result at the tournament until her victory nine years later.[5]
