There have been several American-Canadian computer animated and motion capture-based direct-to-video films based on and featuring the doll Barbie. Since her film debut appearance in the 1987 film Barbie and the Rockers: Out of This World, Barbie has been a computer animated virtual actress starring in several feature films and short films. Barbie has also appeared as a character in other films including Mattel's My Scene line as well as the Toy Story film series.

Many of the Barbie films are classic stories ranging from fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen to The Three Musketeers and The Nutcracker. Some are set in their own fantasy worlds such as with Fairytopia and Mariposa, which are revisited in video sequels. Others feature Barbie in storylines with her sisters.

The series was created by Mattel Creations. Mattel started the Barbie film series with Barbie in the Nutcracker using the name Mattel Entertainment with the animation work done by Mainframe Entertainment (now Rainmaker Studios) except for The Barbie Diaries.[citation needed] Beginning with the 2010 film Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale), Mattel referred themselves as Barbie Entertainment for the Barbie film production.[citation needed] Starting with Barbie and the Secret Door in 2014, Mattel used their new in-house film studio, Mattel Playground Productions to include Barbie films in its production without mentioning Rainmaker in the opening credits.[citation needed] Currently, beginning with Barbie: Star Light Adventure in 2016, Mattel releases newer Barbie films under the name Mattel Creations.[citation needed]

Although the films were released direct-to-video, some of them have of the films have broadcast on cable television on channels such as Nickelodeon.

Season 1 (1987)[edit]

First generation comprised two TV specials. Barbie and the Rockers: Out of this World was created in 1987 by DIC Entertainment. It was aired with Barbie and the Sensations: Rockin' Back to Earth as a two part mini-series, with each installment lasting for approximately 25 minutes. This miniseries was supposed to have been the pilot for a Monday-Friday Barbie cartoon series. However, negotiations between DIC and Mattel fell through, and the project eventually emerged with a whole new set of characters — and the sponsorship of Mattel rival Hasbro — as Maxie's World in 1988.[1] The story was based on the Barbie and the Rockers doll line in which Barbie is the lead singer of a rock band.

2 "Barbie and the Sensations: Rockin' Back to Earth" Barbie September 27, 1987 (1987-09-27)
After the first great concert for peace in space, Barbie and her band The Rockers are going to come back home. During the trip back to earth, on the space shuttle, they start to play a song. Few seconds later a "time warp" tunnel is forming in front of the Shuttle. Then they see there are a lot of clocks going backward inside the tunnel, at the end of that, the Shuttle lands on a strange airport. After the landing they meet Dr. Merrishaw and his daughter Kim. They learn that they are in the year 1959, and brings them around the city to have a look change. After a performance at Cape Canaveral, Dr. Merrishaw helps Barbie and the Rockers return to their time. Back in the present, they have a big concert, where Barbie is reunited with an adult Kim and introduced to her daughter Megan.

Season 2 (2001–2009)[edit]

The second generation comprised 16 films. In 2001, the first CGI-animated Barbie movie was released with Barbie in the Nutcracker, and it was tagged as Barbie's first ever movie. Mattel auditioned 70 people to find the right voice for Barbie, and they eventually picked Kelly Sheridan (who has become Barbie's voice ever since). Even though Sheridan was replaced by Chiara Zanni for the film Barbie: Mariposa, she returned for the rest of the Barbie films of the second generation. The theme was usually based on ballet stories and fairy tales, featuring Barbie as a princess, a fairy or a mermaid.

1 "Barbie in the Nutcracker" Barbie/Clara/Sugarplum Princess October 23, 2001 (2001-10-23)

Barbie and her younger sister Kelly are practicing ballet for a recital, but Kelly wants to give up because she is unable to perform properly next to Barbie, who performs her moves perfectly. To encourage her, Barbie tells the story based on the ETA Hoffman classic.

Barbie stars as Clara, a teenage girl who receives a mysterious but beautiful wooden Nutcracker for a Christmas present from her favourite aunt. Vowing to treasure it, Clara dozes off on the couch while hugging it, and that is when mice invade the parlour and the Nutcracker springs to life. In the midst of the battle, Clara awakes and tries to help, but the leader of the mice troops, the Mouse King shrinks her with an evil spell and the duo are forced to run from the mice into a fantasy world filled with magic. Together, they set off on a fantastic adventure to find the Sugar Plum Princess, the only person with the power to break the enchantment."[2] Encountering plenty of obstacles and getting to know new people, Clara finds out that the Nutcracker is actually a prince Eric who was cursed a long time ago by the Mouse King as well. However, the Mouse King soon finds out about their quest, and after researching the Sugar Plum Princess to be nothing more than "kind, clever and brave" decides that she is no threat and turns his attention to capturing the Nutcracker instead. The Mouse King succeeds through a trap and Clara journeys to his castle with the help of fairies to save them before a final confrontation between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Just as Clara risks her life to protect the Nutcracker, the Nutcracker deflects his spell with his sword blade, and collapses, shrinking the Mouse King to the size of a real mouse. A kiss from Clara revives him, and he is changed back into his princely form and the Mouse King's spells undone, while Clara is revealed (unbeknownst to even herself) to be the true Sugar Plum Princess, being "kind, clever and brave". As they dance, the Mouse King steals Clara's locket encompassed with magic, and while he is destroyed, Clara disappears and awakes on her couch living room, the Nutcracker missing. Distressed at his loss, her aunt returns from a "morning stroll" along with Prince Eric, introducing him as "the son of a dear friend of mine". Eric returns her lost locket and they dance together in the living room.

After the story, Kelly, much encouraged, returns to practicing ballet with Barbie.
2 "Barbie as Rapunzel" Barbie/Rapunzel October 1, 2002 (2002-10-01)

Barbie and her sister Kelly are painting together, but Kelly can't find inspiration to paint. To encourage her to believe in herself and her ideas, Barbie tells Kelly the story based on The Brothers Grimm's Rapunzel.

Barbie stars as the main character Rapunzel, a beautiful young girl with long, golden locks living in the time of magic and dragons. However, although Rapunzel's hair was radiant, her life was far from such. Imprisoned in a manor house surrounded by an enchanted wall and thick forest, she works for Gothel, a jealous, scheming witch. Her only companions are Hobi, a talking rabbit, and Penelope, a young dragon who is the daughter of Gothel's dragon ride Hugo with a fear of heights. Rapunzel's ordinary, boring life changes when she finds a silver hairbrush in a secret underground storage room, a message engraved on it addressed to Rapunzel from "Mother and Father", as well as a way out into the open past the forest and wall to the local village and royal palace, where she meets a kind young man after saving his younger sister. She learns about a feud occurring between their kingdom and another ruled by King Wilhelm.

When Rapunzel returns, Gothel is aware of her escape and destroys her paintings, paint, and brushes and heightens Rapunzel's room into a tall tower. In the midst of her despair, the silver hairbrush turns into a silver paintbrush instead that can depict anything Rapunzel thinks of. Using it to paint the grassland she went to the previous time, Rapunzel enters the landscape and meets the young man again, who is revealed to be Prince Stefan of the kingdom. They fall in love and he invites her to his father's birthday party, but Gothel once again finds out about Rapunzel's second escape and destroys the brush, cuts Rapunzel's hair, and constructs an unbreakable wall that imprisons those "with a lying heart". Gothel impersonates Rapunzel to go to the ball and attempts to kill Stefan just as King Wilhelm's troops invade the palace to confront Stefan's father King Frederick.

Meanwhile, Rapunzel escapes the tower because she is not a liar and journeys to the palace on Penelope, who has managed to overcome her fear of heights and fly past the enchanted wall, meeting up with Stefan, Gothel, and a dueling Frederick and Wilhelm. The past reveals that Gothel loved Wilhelm but he married another woman instead and had Rapunzel for their child. Vowing revenge, Gothel stole Rapunzel and Wilhelm, accusing Frederick of stealing her, began the feud between the two kingdoms. Rapunzel and Gothel confront each other, and she traps Gothel in the tower using a portal created by the paintbrush that she used previously to return to the tower. As Gothel had lied, the tower locks her in for good forever. Hugo is also released from Gothel's control and the enchanted wall disappears. The two kingdoms make up, father and daughter reconcile, and Stefan marries Rapunzel.

Returning to the present, Kelly finds inspiration to paint her ideas. Barbie as Rapunzel shows that love and imagination can change the world."[3]
3 "Barbie of Swan Lake" Barbie/Odette September 30, 2003 (2003-09-30)

Barbie and Kelly are out at sleep-away camp, but Kelly can't sleep because she misses home as she isn't used to camping. To encourage her, Barbie tells her the story based on Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.

Barbie stars as Odette, the daughter of a humble baker in a rustic village with her insecurities and shyness about showcasing her skills, especially in comparison to her bold older sister Marie. One day, a unicorn appears in the village and she helps it escape the village as the villagers attempt to capture it. Following it, she crosses a waterfall and winds up in The Enchanted Forest, stopping to pluck a stuck crystal from a large tree. The Fairy Queen of the Enchanted Forest then approaches Odette and proclaims her the saviour of the Enchanted Forest, explaining the threat of Rothbart, her cousin and an evil wizard, and his spoilt daughter Odile, who want to take over the Enchanted Forest from her rule. Odette, hampered by an overwhelming sense of insecurity, proclaims herself unfit for the job and sets out to leave the forest but is confronted by Rothbart and Odile, who turn her into a swan.

To protect Odette from further danger, the Fairy Queen forms the crystal into a crown and gifts it to her, as well as casting a spell that lets her turn back into a human from sunset till dawn as her powers are unable to completely erase Rothbart's spell. Bolstered by the powers of the magic crystal, Odette vows to defeat Rothbart and free herself, as well as the Fairy Queen's captured elves and fairies, from Rothbart's spells. The Fairy Queen also tells Odette of the secret to defeating him hidden deep within the book of forest lore guarded by a troll named Erasmus. Lilia, the unicorn, offers to accompany Odette to the vault. They search for the book the whole night but are unable to find it.

Meanwhile, the prince Daniel is pressured by his mother to find a bride quickly at the royal ball, but Daniel yearns to be free. Rothbart uses him as an opportunity to destroy Odette so he can steal the magic crystal. When Daniel is led by Rothbart into the Enchanted Forest, he attempts to shoot Odette, who appears as a swan, but ultimately stops and witnesses her turn back into a human. Love blossoms between them as Odette explains the situation to him, and as they dance into the night, he invites Odette to the ball to be his bride. Daniel then returns to the village and reassures the baker and Marie of Odette's safety.

Erasmus manages to find the book of forest lore, which states that the bearer of the magic crystal, when shared a love with another person, will overcome all evil magic, unless the bearer's lover pledges love to another, with that the magic crystal will lose all power. Rothbart, hearing about this, then transforms Odile into a spitting image of Odette to arrive before Odette can turn into a human and go to the ball, which succeeds as Odette arrives too late as a swan, collapsing on the balcony. Daniel and Rothbart clash there as Rothbart steals the crystal but accidentally turns Odile into a pig, and the Fairy Queen retrieves Odette. The chase ensues to the Enchanted Forest where the Fairy Queen suffers defeat, and Odette awakes to Daniel and Rothbart dueling to risk her live to save him. Both fall unconscious, hands clasped, and the crystal regains power and reverses all Rothbart's evil spells. The couple awake and embrace, moving the ball to the Enchanted Forest where Odette reunites with her father and Marie. Rothbart and Odile spend their days being a cuckoo clock and cleaning out the forest vault respectively.[4]

Back in reality, Kelly is comforted and goes to bed.
4 "Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper" Princess Anneliese and Erika September 28, 2004 (2004-09-28)

Based on the Mark Twain classic, this film features Barbie in an exciting dual role as a princess and a poor village girl who uncannily resemble each other, but live in two different worlds respectively. One is born with blonde hair and is a princess named Anneliese, while the other is a brown-haired poor seamstress named Erika. Both dream of living another life, and their lives change together when Anneliese is kidnapped by the evil Preminger, a court official seeking the riches that come with the crown. As Anneliese is engaged to a certain King Dominick, he decides to kidnap Anneliese first before returning her to the Queen after King Dominick has given up on the engagement, believing that the Queen, out of gratitude, will let him marry Anneliese and become king. Preminger forges a note from Anneliese saying that she has run away to prevent from marrying King Dominick, created with lilac paper, arousing the suspicion of Anneliese's astute friend and tutor Julian, who recalls that Anneliese always writes letters with rose paper. He requests that Erika pretend to be Anneliese for a short while so he can trip Preminger into revealing Anneliese's location. As Erika shows up, the initially cancelled wedding is put back on track.

Meanwhile, Anneliese, with the help of her white pet cat Seraphina, manages to escape Preminger's men, only to be caught by Madame Carp, Erika's mean boss, and put to work, mistaking her for Erika despite Anneliese's blonde hair. The two girls switch lives. King Dominick, who has a great love for music, overhears Erika singing and falls in love with her, mistaking her for Anneliese, as does her when she finds him a nice person. Julian tracks down Preminger's hideout but is captured without noticing Anneliese escape and Preminger also recaptures Anneliese. Lying to the Queen that she has died, Preminger reveals Erika as an impostor and throws her in prison, as well as Preminger convince the Queen to remarry and take him as her new husband instead, targeting her while she is in despair of Anneliese's supposed death under the false pretext of having a fortune to help the people.

While under capture, Anneliese confesses her love to Julian, and he does the same. Preminger's cart-horse, who has made friends with Seraphina, leads Wolfie, Erika's cat, to the mine where they are being held where he shows them the way out. Julian promptly hacks at a water spout and lets them float to the surface and escape together. Erika escapes prison with the help of King Dominick to meet up with Anneliese and Julian and together, they stop the wedding and reveal Preminger's treachery. All ends well when Julian and Anneliese get married and live together in the village while Erika marries Dominick and goes to his kingdom to live. The two identical girls part ways, but vow never to forget each other.[5]
5 "Barbie: Fairytopia" Elina March 8, 2005 (2005-03-08)

Through the rainbow, there exists a whole new world filled with magic and fairies, known only as Fairytopia. Ruled over by a mysterious Enchantress and seven Guardian Fairies, each representing a colour of the rainbow, Fairytopia has been at peace for a long era until fairies lose their ability to fly and the flowers of Fairytopia begin to wither. Barbie stars as Elina, a fairy born without wings, living in her flower home with her puffball friend Bibble. Due to her disability, she is often teased by other fairies and has resigned to the fact that she is nothing special although the rainbow in her eyes, a sign of great ability, is present. Elina seeks help from another Guardian Fairy named Azura, whom she believes can solve the problem. Because Elina has no wings, she is unaffected by the poisonous gas that paralyses fairies' wings, but this causes her to face difficulties most fairies could easily pass. After an arduous journey, Elina reaches Azura's home and Azura tells Elina of Laverna, the Enchantress's evil sister who is the cause of these problems, in addition to her mission to consult the dryad Dahlia, a former servant of Laverna. Azura also requests that Elina hold on to her Guardian Necklace containing her blue power for her without explaining her reasons. The following day however, Azura has disappeared but luckily she has made plans for Bibble to find Hugh, a giant butterfly that will help Elina get around. Figuring that Azura has been kidnapped by Laverna, Elina decides to embark on Azura's mission for her, planning to go to the Wildering Woods, Dahlia's residence, to find the dryad.

Azura is brought to Laverna's lair, meeting her other six Guardian Fairies who have been kidnapped. Jealous of her sister's power, Laverna has put her sister to sleep and is capturing all the Guardian Fairies so she can use their Guardian Necklaces to gain the rainbow power of Fairytopia, becoming its undisputed ruler. As Azura had predicted this and given her necklace to Elina, Laverna targets Elina instead, sending her Fungus minions and firebirds after her. With the help of Hugh and the mermaid prince Nalu, Elina finds Dahlia and convinces her to help Fairytopia, as they are "the friends you haven't met yet" -- you have to do what's right even if it is not the easiest thing for you. Dahlia explains that Laverna has created a crystal-like device using her royal bloodline that could suck the power from the gems of the Guardians' necklaces and transfer it to her, despite the cryptic weakness that the "union point was fragile". Arriving at Laverna's lair, Elina enters alone, and her friends are captured by the Fungus after they prevent her from being discovered.

Noticing the rainbow in Elina's eyes, Laverna offers Elina the gift of what she had always wanted: wings, in exchange for Azura's necklace, her friends' freedom and her cooperation. Before Elina clasps the necklace around Azura's neck, she breaks free from the trance and finds the union point --- the crystal-like device constructed by Laverna where the seven powers unite into one to be passed to her. Elina throws Azura's necklace and breaks the crystal, returning the Guardians' powers and banishing Laverna to the Bogs of the Hinterland, a despicable place located under Fairytopia. Laverna's poison wears off off the fairies, the Guardian Fairies are free, and the Enchantress awakes from her enchanted sleep.

Returning to her home, Elina is pleased to find the flowers blooming healthily once again and she is hailed as a hero. Out of gratitude for Elina's bravery and deeds, the Enchantress herself gifts Elina a necklace just like the ones the Guardians' have, only of rainbow colour, conjuring a pair of wings for Elina, who takes her very first flight. Elina lives up to the rainbow in her eyes indeed.[6]
6 "Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus" Princess Annika September 30, 2005 (2005-09-30)

Barbie stars as Princess Annika, a princess who loves skating, is adventurous and bold, but her parents forbid her from leaving the castle. Instead, Annika has been sneaking out, often to ice skate, until the day of her birthday when an evil wizard named Wenlock requests that she marry him, petrifying the surrounding villagers as well as Annika's mother and father. Luckily, a mysterious pegasus named Brietta saves Annika and whisks her away to Cloud Kingdom, a world above the clouds, and brings her to the kingdom's Queen Rayla to seek help to break Wenlock's spell, which will become permanent in three days. Queen Rayla tells Annika about a mythical Wand of Light that can undo his spells, but has to be forged by very special and cryptic materials: a measure of courage, a ring of love, and a gem of ice lit by hope's eternal flame, as well as the fact that Brietta is her older sister who was cursed by Wenlock. Bolstered by Annika's courage, the two sisters set out on a quest to find the materials and forge a Wand of Light, starting with the deepest, darkest part of the Forbidden Forest, along with a bell from Queen Rayla that can call for help from the Cloud Kingdom.

Brietta and Annika encounter help in the form of Aden, a mysterious young blacksmith who agrees to help them forge the materials together once they are found. Together, they find the materials in the most unorthodox of ways, forging them into a Wand of Light. After it turns Brietta back into a human, help arrives from Cloud Kingdom in the form of pegasuses that take the princesses to Wenlock's castle for the final showdown, parting ways with Aden.

Along the journey, Wenlock appears, steals the Wand of Light and buries Annika in ice, although Aden and Brietta save her and the maidens at Cloud Kingdom heal her. Annika, Aden and Brietta fly to Wenlock's castle while the maidens try to delay the sunset to give them more time. As Brietta guards the pegasuses, Aden and Annika ice-skate into Wenlock's castle as the Wand of Light is spirited to his previous three wives, who ultimately give it to Annika. Breaking all of Wenlock's spells and reverting him to his former pitiful beggar state, his three wives force him to work as how he had tyrannised over them before. Annika returns home with Brietta and Aden, whose father also forgives him. Aden and Annika get married and ice-skate together in Cloud Kingdom.[7]
7 "Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia" Elina March 14, 2006 (2006-03-14)

Elina is now a happy fairy now with her wings. However, threats bloom in the Bogs of the Hinterland as Laverna's Fungi minions have captured Prince Nalu, Elina's friend, to force him to find a certain Immunity Berry that will make the eater immune to all forms of magic, regardless of time. Elina travels to Mermaidia, the mermaid kingdom, to seek help from Nori, a headstrong mermaid with a secret crush on Nalu, and wants nothing to do with Elina. While initially maintaining a rocky relationship, they consult Delphine the Oracle, an all-knowing creature who tells them to go into the Depths of Despair, a forbidden and frightening place that will show them the answer to any problem, including how to save Nalu. Delphine warns Elina of the possibility of giving up her wings for a tail, but promises they will be returned back to her as long as she gets above water before the pearls of an enchanted necklace completely turn white. Elina takes the necklace and gives up her wings to rescue a trapped Nori in the Depths of Despair. They find Nalu tied up on shore, and successfully save him. Unfortunately, the Fungus knows the location of the Immunity Berry in exchange for the prevention of poison polluting Mermaidia. The trio, including Bibble, manage to get the Immunity Berry from the Fungus just as Elina reaches land grasping it. However, when Fungus threatens to drop the poison into the water, Elina hands it over while the Fungus betrays the deal and drops the vial. Elina dives into the water and closes the vial, but the pearls turn white and she becomes a mermaid permanently. Thankfully, Nori had managed to switch the Immunity Berry given to the Fungus with a berry that reveals your true self instead. Elina eats the berry that reveals your true self, and transforms back into a fairy, this time with more beautiful, butterfly wings. Before she departs for home, Nori also confesses her love to Nalu.

Meanwhile, Laverna eats the berry that reveals your true self, mistaking it for the Immunity Berry, and transforms into an ugly toad.[8]

9 "Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses" Princess Genevieve September 21, 2006 (2006-09-21)
Based in the Brothers Grimm's The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Barbie stars as Princess Genevieve, the seventh daughter of the king's twelve princesses. Ever since their mother died, their father had been looking for a way to help them get through life with a motherly figure, and finds one in his cousin Duchess Rowena. While the duchess treats the girls with kindness in front of their father, she limits their fun and freedom under the false pretext of guiding them towards being better princesses. This includes forbidding them to sing or dance, which is the princesses' favourite pastime. Things change when special books given by their mother to each of the twelve princesses are discovered to unlock a secret gateway of floral patterns printed on the princesses' bedroom floor into a magical world where diamond flowers produce wish-granting pollen, and the princesses can dance for as long as they wish, with music however they please. Due to their constant nights of dancing, their dancing shoes are all worn out and Rowena notices their fatigue in the mornings. The princesses' father soon falls ill but Rowena doesn't want him to get well, instead feeding him poisonous tea traded from a suspicious Mr. Fabian which the king believes contains his dosage of medicine from the doctor. The sisters, unable to convince their father, comfort themselves by dancing the nights away and receiving new dancing shoes from the handsome and kind cobbler Derek. Genevieve tasks Derek to find out who Mr. Fabian is and report the information to her without letting Duchess Rowena know, which he discover Mr. Fabian to be in-charge of an apothecary whom Mr. Fabian traded poisonous herbs in exchange for a silver cup belonging to Queen Isabella, the princesses' mother. Meanwhile, Rowena is still unable to find out about the princesses' nightly activities despite posting her butler Desmond outside the door. After overhearing their father and mistaking that he was disappointed in them, the girls retreat to the magical world forever. It is then Derek tries to meet Princess Genevieve but when he finds out they are gone, sneaks in their bedroom and follows their shoe polish across the floral gateway to enter the magical world, but Rowena's prying monkey pet witnesses this and reports it all to his mistress. Rowena quickly smashes the floral gateway to trap the princesses and Derek there, as well as trick the king into signing over his rights as king to her before his sinking into unconsciousness due to the poison. Thankfully, the girls and Derek find another floral gateway that links to one in the garden, returning to the palace. Together, they hatch a plot to evade the palace guards and expel Duchess Rowena, Desmond and her monkey using the diamond flower pollen. With magic water from the magical world's lake, they heal their father. Returning to the happy days, Derek and Genevieve fall in love and get married.[9]

36 "Barbie: Dolphin Magic" Barbie Roberts September 17, 2017 (2017-09-17)[16]

The first 60-minute special and the first production in the new Barbie: Dream House Adventures series.[15]

In this fun underwater adventure, a dolphin by name Emerald gets caught in a fisherman's net with the aim of making wealth out of the first-time conception and sight of a gemstone dolphin. Due to this, his gemstone markings fade out and so are the other 3 dolphins. A mermaid by name Isla, looking dejected at its departure, vows to find him regardless of his condition. Barbie and her sisters arrive with their puppies at a tropical resort to meet up with Ken. He told them he had an hour's rest before resuming work and asked if they'd want to see the reef. Only Stacie withdrew due to her leg sprain and Chelsea vowing to keep her company till she recovers. Barbie, Skipper and Ken left the puppies on Ken's boat with their snorkel gears to discover the reef. After taking a few funny and memorable shots, Skipper got another chance to take a translucent snapshot of a mermaid (revealed to be Isla) and headed back to the boat with Barbie and Ken. Skipper suggested that they'd follow her to which he agrees as his time is not yet up. Chelsea gets her first sight at Emerald, which Stacie didn't believe at first, but was proven wrong when she saw him through her binoculars Barbie gave her. Using her scooter, she speeds off to his location with Chelsea trying to catchup.

With Emerald locked up in a marine study enclosure, Isla's smile returned when she saw him but couldn't pull out the strong metal bars which prevented him from escaping. Just when Isla thought of a way to free him, Ken's boat arrives causing her to leave him to his fate. As Ken brought Barbie and Skipper to his research facility, they unexpectedly

Live action film adaptation[edit]

In 1986, a St. Petersburg Times newspaper reported that Cannon Films planned to make a Barbie film, but nothing came to fruition. Sony Pictures and Mattel are developing a comedic live-action Barbie movie with Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald producing and Jenny Bicks writing the film.[17] On March 4, 2015 it was announced that Diablo Cody will be doing rewrites on the script.[18] In December 2015 it was announced that Sony would hire three different writers to write scripts, and that they would choose the best one. They are working with the draft written by Hilary Winston.[19][20]

On August 5, 2015, Sony Pictures set the film's release date on June 2, 2017.[21]

On December 2, 2016, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Amy Schumer had been cast as Barbie. It also reported that minor changes would be made in terms of the character and the story itself, centering on a Barbie, who after she is exiled from a world full of Barbies, enters the real world as a normal woman who is imperfect.[22] On March 23, 2017, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Schumer had dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts; similar reports stated that the film was without a director.[23] In August 2017, it was announced that Anne Hathaway would star as the titular character and that up-and-coming director Alethea Jones would helm the film.[24]

Originally scheduled for release on May 12, 2017, it was reported that the live-action film adaptation was pushed back and was set for a June 29, 2018 release in the United States;[25] it was later pushed back to August 8, 2018.[26] The film would later move its release date to May 8, 2020.

Aside from starring in her own films, Barbie was also featured as a supporting character in Toy Story series, and one of the main characters of My Scene movies. There are also few short films and a web show with five seasons. Barbie was supposed to appear in the first Toy Story movie as Woody's girlfriend, but she was replaced with Bo Peep. This is because Mattel did not want Barbie to be given a personality, because, to make Barbie dolls unique to every purchaser, the purchaser was supposed to think of their own personality for Barbie. In 2006, Mattel re-branded My Scene franchise in which Barbie was replaced by Kennedy, saying that "Barbie moved to California".

Film Role(s) Year
"Toy Story 2" Tour Guide Barbie (minor role) November 24, 1999 (1999-11-24)

Barbie's first appearance in the Toy Story series was marked by the several Barbie dolls seen in Al's Toy Barn, a toy shop. The dolls are having a pool party. Rex, Hamm, Mr. Potato Head, and Slinky drive by this aisle, looking for Woody, when the dolls catch their attention. After Hamm asks for directions to Al (the owner of the store), Tour Guide Barbie jumps into the car and navigates them around Al's Toy Barn. She drives the toys through the Hot Wheels aisle, eventually reaching the Buzz Lightyear aisle, where they pick up a newer Buzz instead of Andy's (who is left behind, having been trapped in the cardboard box by that Buzz).

After the outtakes, Tour Guide Barbie makes her final appearance, saying "bye-bye" to the audiences, then complaining how her face hurts from smiling so long.
