Consolidation of regions[edit]
On December 7, 2003, a referendum was held to unite the Perm region and the Komi-Permyatsk autonomous okrug into the Perm territory. The merger proposal was approved by an overwhelming majority. The merger came into effect on December 1, 2005.
On April 17, 2005, a referendum was held on the accesion of the Taymyr and Evenk avtonomous okrugs to the Krasnoyarsk territory. The affiliation proposal was approved by an overwhelming majority. The merger went into effect on January 1, 2007.
On October 23, 2005, a referendum was held to unite the Kamchatka region and the Koryak autonomous okrug into the Kamchatka krai. The merger proposal was approved by an overwhelming majority. The merger went into effect on July 1,2007.
On April 16, 2006, a referendum was held on the accession of the Ust-Orda Buryat autonomous okrug to the Irkutsk region. The affiliation proposal was approved by an overwhelming majority. The merger went into effect on January 1, 2008.
On March 11, 2007, a referendum was held on the unification of the Chita region and the Aginsky Buryat autonomous okrug into the Zabaykalsky krai. The merger proposal was approved by an overwhelming majority. The merger went into effect on March 1, 2008.
