Verdis (Serbian: Вердис), officially the Free Republic of Verdis (Croatian: Slobodna Republika Verdis, Serbian: Слободна Република Вердис) is a micronation[2][3] located in Southeast Europe[a] claiming an uninhabited pocket of disputed land between Croatia and Serbia[4][5] known as Pocket 3 of the Croatia-Serbia border dispute, near another micronation named Liberland. Verdis was proclaimed on the 30 May 2019.[6][7][8]

The pocket of land in question is 0.455 km2 (0.176 sq mi) in area, roughly the same size as Vatican City[9] and has no infrastructure. It has been administered by Croatia since the Croatian War of Independence.[10] Verdis has no diplomatic recognition from any recognised nation.[11] The official website of Verdis states the nation was created in the wake of the ongoing Croatia-Serbia border dispute[12] where neither Croatia or Serbia had claimed the pocket of land that the micronation is located on.[13][14]

The territory claimed by Verdis is the green-coloured land parcel, marked as "Pocket 3" on the map. Due to differences in the border definitions, the yellow-coloured parts to the east are claimed by both Serbia and Croatia. Croatia asserts that the green parts are part of Serbia, but Serbia does not claim them.

Verdis is located on Pocket 3 of the Croatia-Serbia border dispute, near Liberland. The dispute regarding the border along the Danube first arose in 1947 but was left unresolved during the existence of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It was first properly addressed after the break-up of Yugoslavia. Serbia claims that the thalweg of the Danube and the centreline of the river represents the border between Croatia and Serbia, whereas Croatia disagrees and claims that the border lies along the former course of the Danube. Croatia claims a large part of the disputed area controlled by Serbia, while Serbia does not claim much smaller parts controlled but not claimed by Croatia. The self-proclaimed territory is located near[15] another micronation called Liberland.[16]

The area is about 45.5 hectares (112 acres), around the same size as the Vatican. Almost all of the land is covered in forest and is located on a floodplain with little elevation.

Proclamation[edit]

Verdis was founded on a pocket of disputed land on the Croatia-Serbia border dispute near Liberland on the 30 May 2019 by Daniel Jackson, an Australian[17] teenager who proclaimed himself as the President of Verdis.[18] According to the national website of Verdis, the micronation was founded with the goal of becoming a largely humanitarian "state" working towards reconciling ethnic groups near the region.[19] Over the years, Verdis has started to issue passports and ID cards,[20] which citizens can apply for, although the identifications and passports are not recognised by any state making them almost entirely useless.[citation needed]

Recognition[edit]

Today the micronation has no diplomatic recognition from any recognized country.[21] It has claimed to have received support from a number of politicians and political parties and made advancements in providing humanitarian aid to countries including Ukraine.[22]

Access[edit]

Unlike Liberland, Verdis is reported to be only accessible by boat, but as of 2023 is blocked off by Croatian police.[23]

On 12 April 2022, Daniel Jackson, Verdis' President visited Verdis by boat from Croatia with several other "citizens".[23] On departure from Verdis, a flag was left in the micronation near the coast. The micronation self-proclaimed government called it a major achievement and pushed for their goals and aspirations in a post on their official website.[24]

In October 2023, Daniel Jackson and other Verdis settlers were detained in the micronation by Croatian border police. He was given 7 days to leave Croatia and a 3-month ban.[25]
