Artistry
[edit]Musical style and influences
[edit]As a producer, I.M has incorporated various genres in his solo releases including trap, deep soul, R&B, and jazz, which are not the typical genre of music that is normally heard in K-pop.[64]
Growing up, I.M was influenced by his father's love for jazz, classical, and old-school pop music, including international artists Norah Jones' and Kenny G's saxophone albums. I.M has also expressed his love for American singer Trevor Daniel's songs.[1]
Public image and impact
[edit]I.M has been noted for being the "key figure" in leading Monsta X's early overseas promotions because of his fluent english. He has previously conducted exclusive interviews with media outlets such as Chicago Tribune and BBC, which American magazine Forbes noted by saying "Without I.M leading the group as a bilingual member, it is very likely that Monsta X would not have been able to break through the traditional [language] barriers".[65]
I.M's debut solo EP Duality (2021) was noted for topping numerous music charts including Melon, Bugs!, iTunes, and Amazon, and also occupying five spots on Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart, surpassing international artists such as Ariana Grande, Moguai, Adele, and Coldplay, which was considered a "rare feat".[28][66]
In 2023, the replica of the jacket I.M wore in Monsta X's The Connect World Tour was presented at the Swarovski Crystal Worlds exhibition called "The Art of Performance", which presented art pieces previously worn by international stars including Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe, Elton John, and Lady Gaga.[67]
I.M had been cited by DKB's member Harry-June and All(H)Ours' Xayden as an inspiration.[68][69]
