Mars performing in Houston, Texas on November 24, 2010

American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars has written and recorded songs for his studio albums, Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010), Unorthodox Jukebox (2012), and 24K Magic (2016) and has written songs for other singers.[note 1] The Smeezingtons (Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine) worked in the majority of the songs in Mars' debut studio album, including writing "Count on Me" and "Marry You" together.[1] The team collaborated with Khari Cain and Khalil Walton on the album's lead single "Just the Way You Are", peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Mars explained "I wasn't thinking of anything deep or poetic. I was telling a story."[2] Mars co-wrote and co-produced the song "Talking to the Moon" with Grammy Award winning producer Jeff Bhasker.[1] The single "Grenade", was conceptualised after Mars heard an unreleased track with similar lyrical themes.[3] Mars' follow-up album, in addition to reunite collaborators from his previous album, such as The Smeezingtons and Jeff Bhasker, included new composers, such as Mark Ronson and Emile Haynie. All of these producers worked on the lead single "Locked Out of Heaven". The song concerns a relationship infused with positive emotion and good sex.[4][5] The idea behind the second single, "When I Was Your Man", is the regret of letting a girl get away.[6] Several of the songs were written solely by his production team, including the lead single, "If I Knew" and the single "Gorilla"[5]

Aside from writing material for his albums, Mars, sometimes alongside The Smeezingtons, since they established themselves as a production trio in 2009, has worked with a multitude of singers on songs that have been included on their albums.[7][8] Mars has reunited with Alexandra Burke, Adam Levine, Brandy, Sean Kingston and Flo Rida, writing songs for them.[9][10] Mars and his production team wrote Cee Lo Green's single "Fuck You" alongside Green.[11] The singer also contributed to several songs on Sugababes' seventh and final studio album Sweet 7 (2010), including the lead single "Get Sexy" and the third single "Wear My Kiss".[12] Mars has appeared as a guest vocalist on the singles "Billionaire" by Travis McCoy and "Nothin' on You" by B.o.B. Both songs were co-written by himself and his team.[13][14] Mars is also responsible for co-writing and singing the singles Bad Meets Evil's "Lighters" and Lil Wayne's "Mirror".[15][16] He also wrote songs for movie soundtracks, including the singles "It Will Rain", sung by himself, issued from the soundtrack of the 2011 film The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and "Young, Wild & Free" by Wiz Khalifa & Snoop Dogg and Mars, which was included in the film Mac & Devin Go to High School and on its soundtrack.[17][18] In 2011, The Smeezingtons were awarded the title of Biggest Songwriters of 2010 by Music Week.[19] Mars was named the sixth best songwriter of 2013, according to Billboard.[20]
