Pokémon Legends: Arceus[a] is an upcoming action role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is part of the eighth generation of the Pokémon video game series and serves as a prequel to the 2006 role-playing video games Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. It was announced as part of the Pokémon 25th Anniversary event, alongside Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and is scheduled for release in early 2022.
Setting
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set in a Meiji Restoration Japan-inspired Sinnoh region, long before the events of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.[1][2] The mythical Pokémon Arceus will play a major role in the story.[2]
Gameplay
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an action role-playing game with an open-world setting building on the Wild Area featured in Pokémon Sword and Shield.[3] Players can capture Pokémon directly in the overworld and can engage in battle by releasing Pokémon they have previously captured near a wild Pokémon; battles are done through regular, turn-based combat similar to previous Pokémon main series games.[4][5] At the start of the game, three starter Pokémon options are available: Rowlet (from Sun and Moon), Cyndaquil (from Gold and Silver), and Oshawott (from Black and White).[5]
Release
The game was first revealed in a presentation on 26 February 2021, as part of the Pokémon 25th Anniversary event, alongside Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. It serves as a prequel to Diamond and Pearl.[6] The game is scheduled to be released worldwide in early 2022.[7]
