Rio do Sul is a municipality in the state of Santa Catarina in the South region of Brazil.

One of the postcards of the city is the mother church (Cathedral of St. John the Baptist). Other important buildings are the bridge of the arches, the railway station and some German-style buildings. Also in town is the birthplace Rio Itajai-Açu (the meeting of rivers Itajaí South and Itajaí West).

History

Rio do Sul was elevated to status of municipality status by the state law. # 1,708 of October 10, 1930, with territory taken from Blumenau.

Climate

The Region is classified with temperate humid. The annual median temperature is 18 °C (Max: 34 °C, in the summer and Min: -2 °C in the winter). Recently (Winter of 2013) was registered snow in the city, something very rare.

Floods

Rio do Sul has a sad history of floods. The City is bathed by three rivers, the South Itajai, Itajai Acu and West Itajaí. The biggest floods ever recorded in recent years are the years 1983 and 1984 respectively, and most recently in September 2011, where the water level exceeded 13 meters, causing much damage and destruction.

Education

The city of Rio do Sul is the most responsible for the education of children, the largest number of schools facing children and teenagers is administrative and public access. But a lower number of private schools help to meet the demand of school age population.The Main schools in private education colleges of elementary and secondary education are Dom Bosco College, College Sinodal Ruy Barbosa, Institute María Auxiliadora, Curso e Colégio Energia and school UNIDAVI. In public education, we highlight the state colleges Henrique da Silva Sources and Paul Zimmermann.

There are also educational centers geared directly to the labor market as the SENAI and SENAC, who offer professional courses for the secondary level.

The universities operating in the region are UNIDAVI (University for the development of high Itajaí Valley), which was founded in Rio do Sul in 1966 and the FAMESUL Uniasselvi (Metropolitan College of Southern River), IFC-Federal Institute of Santa Catarina, the only administrative and public access.
