A screencap of the fire would be useful, and should be usable under NFCC, to show the arson fire. And if someone could pass by the back of Metropolis (next the the Jeanne Mance residences), and photograph it... (since the news channels are use Google Street View to show it in news reports from before the fire...) -- 76.65.131.248 (talk) 08:25, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2012 Montreal shootingMontreal Metropolis shooting

I don't think the title is specific enough to the event. By only reading the title, it is hard to know "which" shooting we're talking about. Sure, there might not have been other important shootings in Montreal in 2012, but remembering the 2012 one relates to the election night is not easy.

In other words, I think "Montreal" and 2012 is not precise enough to be able to mentally identify the event from the title. Following WP:NCE, either we should precise the location ("Metropolis") or the time ("Provincial election night 2012"). I propose "Metropolis" for conciseness. And since Metropolis can mean multiple locations, I propose using "Montreal Metropolis" as the location.

Thus, "Montreal Metropolis shooting" would be clear in the reader's mind which event we're talking about, as opposed to "2012 Montreal shooting".

  • Oppose What's the problem with "2012 Montreal shooting"? There is no other article that deserves this name, which identifies a significant shooting in Montreal. Other shootings in that year have not received anything close to the same national coverage because they had no impact outside of a limited area. This title specifies a year, a location, and an event that is unique in that year. I see no problem keeping it. If a person arrives at this article from a Wikilink, they will have ample information in the article to indicate what happened. That title is not supposed to give the whole story, only provide a unique label for the event. It already does that admirably, and needs no changes. --Skol fir (talk) 02:22, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Those are exactly the questions I answer in my original post. Dead exactly.

Bert Macklin, my only question was a rhetorical one, asking what was wrong with "2012 Montreal shooting". I answered my own question by refuting everything you said in your original proposal, thus arguing for no change to the title. If you and other readers have a problem with the identification of this event from that title, then all they need to do is to click on the Wikilink, 2012 Montreal shooting, and all their questions are answered. I don't see any need to change this title. Thankfully, the beautiful city of Montreal is rarely known for a shooting. Let's keep it that way. --Skol fir (talk) 18:52, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Current title is so unspecific...in the English-language article about Pauline Marois, it is referred to as 2012 Metropolis shooting. Both French and English media usa Metropolis to designate this particular incident. Move the damn title — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.82.41.42 (talk) 14:10, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Title and content too unspecific to be of any use

[edit]

Why is it not mentioned that this is an assassination attempt? The title should be: "2012 Montreal Assassination Attempt". The term "shooting" refers to the facts without contextualisation or explanation regarding the event itself (the fact that a guy that seemed disturbed shot those who were in the way of him accessing Pauline Maurois and room full of PQ supporters).

As it stands, the info may only make sense to those who already know about the event. Even worse: "2012 Montreal shooting" smacks of obfuscation. Who can change this title? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.203.41.3 (talk) 20:13, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's confirmed that it was an assassination attempt... is it? If so, can you get some proof? DS (talk) 21:17, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Latest news updates and title review

[edit]

Hi guys. The murderer's trial has finally started (check the French version of this page) and you may consider using an English equivalent of the French title that could be translated as "Montreal Metropolis Attack". "Attentat" does not refer to a mere shooting but to a real, premeditated "attack". And it is the case here -- even if the attacker was a lonely wolf not affiliated to any group.

You may also consider other alternatives suggested by the recent media coverage:

Suggested name change

[edit]

I know this has been discussed before but I'm suggesting a name change. The name "2012 Montreal shooting" is too vague in my opinion, and I am sure that there were many shootings in that city that year. I feel the name "2012 Quebec election shootings" to be more appropriate. What do you think? 198.200.115.45 (talk) 03:34, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
