Fair use rationale for File:Basil W. Duke.jpg

[edit]

File:Basil W. Duke.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

GA Review

[edit]
This review is transcluded from Talk:Basil W. Duke/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Hi! I am going to be reviewing this article for GA, and should have the full review up within a few hours. Dana boomer (talk) 17:58, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA review (see here for criteria)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose): b (MoS):
    • The "References" section should come after the "Notes" section. Done
    • There should be no spaces between sequential refs. So, it should be [8][9], not [8] [9]. Done
    • There should be no new information in the lead; it should instead be a summary of all of the other sections in the article. New information and references should be moved to the body of the article in the appropriate section.
Not sure where to place the information. I'll have to ask someone.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 03:30, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps try the end of the "Early life and career" section? This is where I think it would fit best. However, if other people have other ideas, that's fine too!
    • Prose issues:
    • "Early life and career" section, "save for an instance in his Reminiscences, he seldom mentioned them." Since you do not introduce this book until much later in the article, perhaps say "in his autobiography".
Wasn't really an autobiography, more like him remembering the things he observed. Not sure how to fix this.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 03:30, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm...I see. I suppose it's allright as is; however, if at some point you have an epiphany for another way of wording it, please change :)
    • "Civil War service", third paragraph, "exiting his right should, barely missing his spine". Is this supposed to be "shoulder"? Done
    • Same section, fourth paragraph, is there a reason for his nickname of "The Little Whalebone"? If so, please explain.
I saw no reason he was called this, so I removed.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 03:30, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • "Postbellum" section, second paragraph, "He helped to found Louisville's Filson Club Historical Society 1884,". Should this be "in 1884"? Done
    • Same section, same paragraph. For the three books that he wrote, please give publication years for all of the books, and put them in chronological order. Done
    • Same section, third paragraph, "After 1900, Duke began slowing down." This is un-encyclopedic. Perhaps replace by "After 1900, Duke began to withdraw from his public career" or something of the sort. Done
    • Same section, same paragraph, "Afterward, lived with his daughter Julia". Should this be "he lived"? Done
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
    • Two of the books in the "References" section are not used in in-line referencing. Is there a reason they're needed in the refs section?
    Removed.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 03:30, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:

I am putting this article on hold for seven days in order to allow time for the issues above to be addressed. Overall, this is a well-written and well-referenced article that needs just a few minor tweaks before becoming GA. If you have questions, you can ask them here on the review page or on my talk page. Dana boomer (talk) 18:36, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. Currently, I have a job that will take most of my time thru Sunday, so I would be hard press to do anything until Monday.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 02:57, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all your hard work so far. There's just the one concern left, which I've added a response to above. If you need more time to work on this article, that's fine and I will extend the hold for another week. Dana boomer (talk) 12:58, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Everything looks good, so I'm passing for GA. Dana boomer (talk) 14:33, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Henrietta not Tommie

[edit]

Quick note about the change made in Postbellum. "Duke was devastated when, on October 20, 1909, his wife of fifty years, Tommie, died of sudden heart failure.", should have said "Duke was devastated when, on October 20, 1909, his wife of fifty years, Henrietta, died of sudden heart failure.".

From what I could find Henrietta often went by Tommy, not Tommie, which happened to be the name her oldest daughter (third child) Thomas Morgan Duke born August 18, 1863. Tommie was named after Henrietta's brother Thomas Morgan who died on July 5, 1863 at the Battle of Lebanon. Since there's no other reference to Henrietta being called Tommy in the article it would be confusing and inappropriate not to refer to her as Henrietta when speaking of her death and the impact it had on Basil. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Machivelli (talkcontribs) 21:41, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GA concerns

[edit]

After reviewing this article, I am concerned that it no longer meets the GA criteria. My concerns are listed below:

  • There are a lot of uncited paragraphs in the "Later life" section
  • There are sources listed in "Further reading" that might be used as inline citations in the article. Considering that there are few inline citations in this article, I think it would be good if potential sources were examined.

Is anyone interested in fixing up this article? Z1720 (talk) 22:33, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is a lot of uncited text. There are also sources in the "Further reading" section that might be useful as inline citations. Z1720 (talk) 01:14, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This needs substantial work. The Matthews biography is available through the Wikipedia Library, as is a chapter about him in Kentuckians in Gray. I own copies of Warner and then Welsh's Medical Histories of Confederate Generals if anybody wants to consult those. I'm too busy to rewrite this myself but can help a bit if there is a push to rework this. Pending someone else being interested, this needs to be delisted. I have my hands full with real-life stuff and the GAR for Gettysburg Cyclorama. Hog Farm Talk 22:27, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
