Latino Backlash and Criticism

[edit]

How come no mention is made of the criticism levelled at Dana by the Latino community for portraying and profiting from a stereotype? It was really in bad taste and gave people a misguided view of a Latino. MisterX117 (talk) 16:25, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you can provide references in reliable sources that support this criticism, feel free to add it. --CutOffTies (talk) 16:32, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

– Sole subject of Wikipedia biographical entry who bears this specific name, thus obviating the need for the parenthetical qualifier "(comedian)". The Bill Dana disambiguation page should be renamed William Dana since all of its other subjects are named "William", with no indication that any of them was ever referenced as "Bill". —Roman Spinner (talk)(contribs) 01:01, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@In ictu oculi: 1) Since we know that main title headers should not be piped in disambiguation pages, it is certainly commendable that you spotted Bill Dana (pilot)|William H. Dana and unpiped it so that readers see "Bill Dana (pilot)". Because I did not previously click on each of the three "William Dana" names to test the links within the dab page, the visual notice only became evident when you unpiped "Bill Dana (pilot)" nine-and-a-half hours after I submitted the requested move.
2) It should be noted that the pilot's page existed as "William H. Dana" from its creation in September 2004 until a relatively inexperienced editor [first edit July 2010—last edit November 2010] moved it to "Bill Dana (pilot)" on October 25, 2010, with the edit summary "He is well known as Bill Dana".
3) Many military personalities are known by nicknames, but are officially designated by their full names, or names with middle initials. On Talk:Bill Dana (pilot)#Removed USAF astronauts tag, there are mentions of Dana's fellow pilots Pete Knight, Joe Walker and Richard Truly, but when one clicks on those names, their entries' main title headers indicate William J. Knight, Joseph A. Walker and Richard H. Truly. All recipients of military awards are specified by their official service names, as are subjects of almost all military articles.
4) All "External links" [appended to the Bill Dana (pilot) entry] reference him as "William H." (official NASA biography, Encyclopedia Astronautica biography, Spacefacts biography and, finally, his gravestone [at Find a Grave] which depicts "William H. Dana". On that basis, I am moving Bill Dana (pilot) back to William H. Dana.
5) Since there are now three "William" entries on the dab page and only one "Bill", the dab page should be renamed "William Dana", and "Bill Dana (comedian)" should be moved to Bill Dana. It may not matter directly but, in fact, "Bill Dana" is not the comedian's birth name, but only a stage name — his name has never been "William Dana". —Roman Spinner (talk)(contribs) 17:35, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The links to American Comedy Archives (footnotes 14 and 15) should probably be updated to go either here:

https://emerson.edu/american-comedy-archives/

or here:

https://digitalcollections.emerson.edu/uncategorized/SO_df31e5fa-00f0-4a63-bd30-20173eb93422/

but I don’t feel competent to make the changes myself. Will somebody else do this? Jim Dixon 55104 (talk) 01:16, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
