David Duke

[edit]

After the reference to the Populist Party the article has: "(the same party would later nominate David Duke in 1988)". Is this statement really relevant to a discussion of Bob Richards? As much as it may discredit the party, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with Richards. I'm going to remove the statement. Erusse estelinya (talk) 19:46, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's like blaming Harry Truman for the election of Bill Clinton. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 21:00, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. That sentence, "Four years later, that same party ran white nationalist David Duke for president", doesn't sound like an encyclopedia entry. There's definitely a tone and probably a political point of view being expressed. I think it should be dropped.

This article had the poorly sourced tag put on it. I googled some sources and removed the unnecessary, embarrassing tag. Trackinfo (talk) 17:16, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New vs. White Supremacist

[edit]

To the IP editor(s) changing the ATPP adjective from "white supremacist" to "new." Is there some reason for the change? I'm not personally familiar with the party, but the WP page describes them as white supremacist, and their website itself states "The American Third Position exists to represent the political interests of White Americans, because no one else will." That sounds pretty clear to me. If there is some reason for the change, please discuss here. If not, I think that eventually we're going to have to ask for semi-protection on this page, which means people won't be able to edit unless they have a registered account. Linking to the word "new" is silly, and the group in question sure sounds like white supremacists. It's a shame if Bob Richards has lowered himself to this kind of thing, but that's the way things go sometimes. But if the IP's keep screwing around with it without explaining themselves (or itself, as it's probably just one guy), I'll ask for page protection. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:07, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was the first to revert this silliness. I am in complete agreement. Though it has been well over a decade since I have seen the man, I consider Mr. Richards a personal friend. I certainly wouldn't want to improperly add anything defamatory to the article. However: The nature of the party is clear. This is all referenced multiple times. Posting a different word to mislead or whitewash their agenda is improper. Facts are facts and reporting that accurately is what WP is about.Trackinfo (talk) 00:23, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In my case, Bob Richards is more like a friend-of-a-friend (that friend now being deceased, and I only met Bob once) and Bob has always leaned toward the conservative, even in his athletic prime. As a guy I always thought of highly, I'm hopeful that he himself is not a white supremacist or racist, but either way maybe there needs to be some clarification as to his own views (even if the truth proves painful), to avoid (if appropriate) a McCarthy-esque "guilt by association". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots05:30, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have asked for the article to be protected. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:43, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment comment

[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Bob Richards/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

The links make it a start-class article. The infobox is good too. However, the info should to be organized first, expanded slightly, then a picture would be helpful, to get to B-class, and then more expansion will be needed to cover the topic pretty well to get to GA-class.
