In my view, this entry ought to stay. Uga VIII currently redirects to Uga (mascot), but a review of sources indicates that he gets significant coverage in his own right. There was news coverage of his debut, illness, and death. Now of course, his notability is "inherited" from his ancestors, but not in a WP:NOTINHERITED way because the coverage shows the dog is notable in his own right. --Mkativerata (talk) 21:59, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Most of the removals have been along the lines of "animals don't belong on the list", which, by previous concensus, is untrue. If they have an article, or the possibility of meeting notability criteria, then the entry should stay. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 22:48, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Because several updates have been explained by "there is no consensus", I gathered some of the many locations in which this issue was discussed. There is repeated consensus that notable animals are included. Susan Gleason (talk) 20:30, 7 February 2011 (UTC) (October 2010, January 2010, Barbaro, 2007)[reply]

I just placed a request for page protection right now. This edit war's giving me a headache just looking at it.Crboyer (talk) 23:28, 7 February 2011 (UTC) I suggest that once we collapse the February deaths, we lock it. That 92. range person just won't quit erasing Uga's record. And ignoring all warnings And my attempt to get a constructive discussion going over this issue. Joanne Siegel

[edit]

I know I'm a voice in the wilderness here, but I evoke the book "Eats Shoots and Leaves", the book about punctuation by Lynne Truss. The title refers to a panda who walks into a restaurant, draws a gun, and begins firing. When someone asks him why he did it, he says, "I'm a panda. Books say a panda eats, shoots and leaves." Of course, what the books really says is that a panda "eats shoots and leaves". See the difference a single punctuation mark makes? Case in point: the listing for Joanne Siegel. Writing "American, widow of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel" means that she was an American and she was the widow of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel. Writing "American widow of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel" means that Jerry Siegel had more than one wife and Joanne was his American one. Again, see the difference one simple comma makes? It's the difference between correct and incorrect. But, again, I'm just a voice in the wilderness, so why listen to me, eh? Walter Breitzke (talk) 03:23, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Walter, I suspect you may be a voice in the wilderness, or at least in a minority. Just because she was the American wife of Jerry Siegel does not imply there has to be another, just as John Lennon, British founder of The Beatles or Richard Nixon, American President of the United States do not imply there are pretenders from other nations. As its Wikipedia article states, the purpose of an adjective is "giving more information about the object signified". Using your preferred form of "American, widow of ..." changes the use of "American" from adjective to demonym, which is out of step with all other entries here. As I said in a post on the same issue last month, this issue comes about because said deceased appear to have no notability other than wife or widow, hence the likelihood of future deletion of the death notice anyway. Someone took it down as it was not clear when he died, however, this article makes it clear he died on 20 February. Relisted. WWGB (talk) 23:40, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

i tried to write it up to save it from a red link but it was erased--70.162.171.210 (talk) 12:33, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've asked the deleting admin to restore it. I will also add some additional references in order to bolster his notability once the article is back in mainspace. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 17:00, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
