First Hispanic in Space?[edit]

Franklin Chang-Diaz, of Latin American descent, went into space in 1986, seven years before Ellen Ochoa. That brings into question the claim in this article that she was "the first U.S. Hispanic in space". Since that claim is not supported by the article's references, I am adding a "citation needed" tag. If someone can provide a verifiable source, that would be appreciated. If not, this unsupported claim will be removed. Truthanado 14:35, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think there's some confusion between the difference between 'Hispanic' and 'Latin American'. According to the article Hispanic, "During the Nixon Administration, the United States Government defined the cultures of Latin America as Hispanic" (and that has two citations). So I agree. It is still notable though, that she is the first Hispanic woman in space (see [1] and several other easily google-able sources). I am adding this as a reference and changing the article to note her as the first hispanic _woman_ in space. Jimduchek 14:42, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW, there is a CBS Cares PSA spot with Miguel Sandoval currently running that says (verbatim):

She was the first hispanic female astronaut having logged almost 1000 hours in space. Celebrate Ellen Ochoa and Hispanic Heritage Month.

She is the first American Hispanic to go into space. Franklin isn't American. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.188.131.167 (talk) 17:16, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"He became an American citizen in 1977." (reading is fundamental) Shenme (talk) 20:12, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The term Hispanic is so ridiculous and has no use in a global context, due to European colonization half of the world is "Hispanic" or "Anglo"... Nigerians, Bolivians, Equatorial-Guineans, Canadians.. what do these people have to do with Europeans from Spain and England? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 135.23.163.172 (talk) 13:50, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Under: "Personal life" section, Ochoa's husband is referenced as an "intellectual attorney," but it should be "intellectual property attorney." Thanks. TrepidTurtle (talk) 18:44, 18 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
