"Life that is Love is God"

[edit]

The source cited does apparently support the claim that "Life that is Love is God" is "a quote from the poet Sappho" – but where on earth is Sappho meant to have said this? At best this is going to be an odd translation of whatever Sappho wrote, because Sappho was no monotheist, but the whole quote reads more like John the Evangelist than ancient Greek lyric. Neither googling this, nor searching through my various editions of Sappho (the Loeb translation, Rayor's 2014 translation, Carson's If Not, Winter) is turning up any original Sapphic source for this quote – it seems much more likely to me that it was an original line of Gore-Booth's which she (mis)cited (either deliberately or accidentally) to Sappho.
