George Jones (U.S. senator) → George Jones (senator, born 1766) – There are two problems here. One is that the "U.S." is unnecessary. Please see Talk:Arthur Brown (Utah senator) and Talk:Dan Sullivan (American senator) for other discussions of that issue. The other problem is ambiguity with George W. Jones, who was also a U.S. senator —BarrelProof (talk) 23:38, 14 September 2018 (UTC) --Relisting. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 20:55, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose for now. Proposal is frankly worse that the current situation (e.g. less WP:PRECISE). The current hatnote at this article is good enough to handle the other U.S. Senator. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 06:57, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
- But that would leave us with two people who are both named George Jones that are both U.S. senators that are not disambiguated. Incomplete disambiguation seems like a poor practice in general. —BarrelProof (talk) 16:00, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
- They are disambiguated currently, by WP:SMALLDETAILS: George Jones vs. George W. Jones. And the latter has no additional disambiguation. The current situation is better than the proposal, IMO. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 16:36, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
- George W. Jones is disambiguated by small details, but I believe George Jones (U.S. senator) is not. —BarrelProof (talk) 05:33, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
- Actually, George W. Jones is not disambiguated by small details, since that is not disambiguated from George Washington Jones (Tennessee politician) and George Washington Jones (Texas politician). Both of those are also "George W. Jones" topics. So I have filed an RM at Talk:George W. Jones. —BarrelProof (talk) 16:01, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

- Oppose per previous. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.126.81.6 (talk) 13:27, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
- I'd prefer George Jones (Georgia politician), though the Georgia (country) disambiguation may be a problem. power~enwiki (π, ν) 00:01, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
- There don't seem to be any Georgia (country) politicians named "George Jones", so I don't see a problem in that regard, and I support the alternative proposal (as the original RM proposer). Incidentally, I doubt that George Jones (the musician) is a proper primary target. —BarrelProof (talk) 17:20, 21 September 2018 (UTC)

Category:American slave owners
[edit]No mention of slave-owning. I feel that this category should be restricted to people whose slave-owning history was notable in itself. Valetude (talk) 12:38, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: moved. Also noting that "Georgia politician" is commonly used as parenthetical disambiguation for politicians from the U.S. state of Georgia, and changing that is outside the scope of this discussion. George Jones (U.S. senator) → George Jones (Georgia politician) – For disambiguation from George Wallace Jones, who was also a U.S. senator, and as a more typical and general disambiguation term than the role-specific "U.S. senator". This title was suggested in the previous RM discussion five years ago. — BarrelProof (talk) 18:21, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

- Oppose Georgia is still ambiguous as it is unclear if it is the country or the US state. Any other alternatives? — DaxServer (t · m · e · c) 14:44, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- I don't think the suggestion is ambiguous because I don't think there is anyone named George Jones who is a politician from the nation of Georgia who is discussed on Wikipedia. — BarrelProof (talk) 16:38, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
