Why did he decline the CBE? Meursault2004 21:13, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- The same reason as everybody else who rejects those honours I suppose, I don't think anyone was shocked. Rje 14:34, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)

"Cleese declined the British honour of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)" Both? It was either a CBE or an OBE. I think that needs correcting and those links a bit of sorting out Stephenjh 05:39, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
- Both? No, only one: CBE stands for Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and OBE for Officer of the Order of the British Empire. "Order" doesn't get an initial (don't ask me why; but this seems to be a common source of confusion, especially in the US). Paul Magnussen (talk) 00:19, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

Ancestry
I have removed the line "Cleese's ancestors originally come from Wales, where some of his distant family still live." Neither of the two sources cited in support (a page on "Everything2" and a Rolling Stone article called "John Cleese's Towering Legacy") makes any mention of any Welsh ancestry.Shiresman (talk) 00:18, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Filmography is far more extensive than given here
Suggest a possible split out of his "business training" films, at some stage.
Any more information on John Cleese?
Cleese did a short sketch in a danish television show - "Casper og Mandrilaftalen" (http://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casper_og_Mandrilaftalen) introducing the "purple gunrack of love"
Great! though may I just say that perhaps Fawlty Towers deserves a mention in the opening paragraph?!
Not to base him around that, but just a suggestion, it was after all perhaps his most critically acclaimed individual masterpiece when he is allowed to take much if not the vast majority of the writing credit. Also, may I just say, John Cleese is the Lord our God. Thats an infinite fact. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.65.242.154 (talk) 13:36, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I found an unknown (to me) short film with & by Cleese: "The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know it." It is 55 minutes, released by White Star video and was produced by Shearwater Films. 1977. Written by Jack Hobbs, Joseph McGrath, John Cleese. Stars Cleese, Connie Booth, Stratford Johns and several other well known British actors. The plot has Cleese as Sherlock Holmes' grandson sent to solve the crime of Moriarty's grandchild. Not terribly funny (to me) and the production values were not high. ~CMAC —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.169.138.105 (talk) 03:10, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Current life
What is he doing now?
He lives not in Santa Barbara, but in the hills above it. He lives in Montecito, California. I actually stayed overnight in the house right next door to him. His neighbor says that he is really cool.

John Cleese in TBS ads?
On TBS's ads "to determine what's funny", John Cleese is the guy in the lab coat throwing oranges at the guy in underwear, is he not? I am sure that was him, if it wasn't then it was his twin.
Yes, I believe that was John Cleese. Rshu 01:25, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
"comic"
"Many considered this to be the perfect tribute to his friend and comic partner." - when talking about the Chapman eulogy. In my mind, "comic" means "funny". As in, "the comic escapades of Bruno McFly". Should this be changed to "comedic"? Ah, bollocks, I'll do it anyway, if anybody wants to revert it, they can. riana 10:50, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
Other use of the "Kim Bread" alias
It may be worth noting that when Cleese agreed to appear in City of Death, he asked the Radio Times to be credited as Kim Bread, and they declined. Anyone who knew this also knew that "Kim Bread" in Starship Titanic WAS indeed Cleese (which Adams later admitted anyway). The former story can be found in a couple of books about Doctor Who (but none that I have here with me right now...) --JohnDBuell 21:05, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Institute for Backup Trauma internet commercial
John Cleese appears in this commercial, which can be accessed here: http://www.backuptrauma.com/ It seems to me that this commercial is significant for being the first (only?) commercial to exclusively make use of the internet as an advertising medium but I'm not qualified to judge this. Should it be included in this article? MCSmarties 15:40, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Books section?
Wouldn't it help to list his two books with Robin Skynner, "The Rectorial Address of John Cleese" and other script books like "The Strange Case of the End of Civilisation As We Know It" and "Faulty Towers", with edtition and ISBN, like we find at Terry Jones' article (or maybe also some of his great articles on comedy) in a separate section after filmography? "Don't want to read the biography? Tough luck!" OK, it's absolutely John Cleese style, but still they would be more obvious for some hasty seeker looking for them in particular. Hoverfish 22:05, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, a bibliography section makes sense. The same counts for Eric Idle since you asked it there too. I already did a (not complete yet I think) bibliography at Michael Palin. Garion96 (talk) 22:48, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
I have tried to find some possible connection of Cleese to the Bedknobs and Broomsticks film (the original book is too old to even consider). I don't find him having done any voices or played and role. I think this doesn't belong in Bibliography or elsewhere in this article. Hoverfish 06:53, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- I couldn't find it either. Therefore, for now, I removed it from the article. Garion96 (talk) 11:14, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Knowledge of German
John Cleese is quite well-versed in German. Anybody knows where and when he learned it? It's worth mentioning.Hoverfish 17:01, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

2006 biography entry
Provided that John Cleese has given all kinds of statements to the press, Gazzalon's entry might be correct. Yet I couldn't find the London Times interview to verify. As for the 2007 claim, where does it originate from? Can some more precise citations be given? Hoverfish 20:00, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Cleese/Cheese?
You can't use everything2 as a reference! Anyway, if JC's father joined the army in 1915, that would mean he was at least 40 when JC was born (far from impossible, but unlikely). Elsewhere, I've heard that it was his grandfather that changed the family name, which the IMDb agrees with ([1]). 213.249.235.86 14:53, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- Michael Palin's Father was 40 when he was born. It wasn't so uncommon in the 40s —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Crestville (talk • contribs) 15:37, 8 February 2007 (UTC).
- It was John's FATHER that changed Cheese to Cleese when he joined the army. It's quoted by John Cleese in the book: "The Pythons On The Pythons" ( their official autobiography. ). He's also stated it in numerous filmed interviews. ( I wouldn't exactly trust the IMDB to be accurate without providing a source , it is afterall cobbled together by the VoxPopuli! ) Harvey J Satan (talk) 02:15, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

His biography needs splitting up. At the moment, all information about his life is in one big chunk. Someone removed the part in the Trivia section where he voiced the TomTom GPS system. Why? I thought it was cool. Also, was he really the first guy to say 'shit' on British TV? That needs some looking into. Curvebill 01:10, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:SillyWalk.jpg
Image:SillyWalk.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Cleese and "I Po"
Cleese, in one of his management series of training videos, used the term "I Po" to describe "putting an idea on the table that had just popped into his head, without any ownership, so that it could be discussed without hurting people's feelings". The idea probably originated with De Bono, but I am trying to track down the CLeese film in which it was included. Does anyone know please? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.31.173.2 (talk) 05:01, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Religion
This page has no mention of religion, and it should considering the attention Life of Brian got. In a documentary on it, Cleese says "I'd been confirmed and I'd sat around for some weeks expecting some golden globe to descend on me, and when it didn't I became fairly atheistical-humanitistic." (From The Secret Life of Brian, which can be found on youtube or any video site). I wouldn't know where to put it in the article, but I think it belongs. --Karuna8 (talk) 16:44, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Collaborations
John Cleese tends to work well in collaboration (where he tends to be the main star) and so I've added text to the lead section highlighting his collaboration with Connie Booth on Fawlty Towers and with Michael Palin, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures. --TS 20:55, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
OCD ?

Supports McCain or Obama?
In the article it states that he supported and donated to John McCain, whereas the article cited it states that it was Barack Obama that he supports. This is probably vandalism and should be fixed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.100.8.210 (talk) 13:26, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Hollywood Bowl
Not quite sure how to address this , so rather than change the article , I'll drop the info. here , and the page organizer may do with it as he/she wishes. John Cleese appeared with Monty Python at The Hollywood Bowl in late September of 1980 - I was there - the FILM was released in 1982. The main article doesn't reference "Film" or "Actual Performance" . Which leads to confusion and people still thinking they were there in 1982. Yeah , one digit. Harvey J Satan (talk) 02:09, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Criticism
If one is going to include a criticism section on Eric Idle, one must also be included on John Cleese
- That is a fair comment. However, unless somebody somewhere has already something in the pipeline and intends to make it an early entry under that section, I rather feel that throwing an empty "Criticism" section into the air would be open to misinterpretation. Not to mention an encouragement for spurious contributions. So, perhaps, omission is better than emission. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:30B:8290:2A69:88E6:9313:E39D:D7F (talk) 15:22, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
Graham Chapman

- Chapman died of throat cancer metastasised to his spine. Cancers are classified by the parent organ, not by where they spread to. Jim Michael (talk) 21:25, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Citizenship?
It would, if I am not mistaken, be illegal for Cleese to give money to Barack Obama's campaign if he (Cleese, I mean) wasn't a U.S. citizen. (Though, it would be legal for him to work for Obama without being a citizen.) Did Cleese become a U.S. citizen at some point? He has lived in California for many years and has married three American women, so it would not be surprising if he changed his citizenship. Timothy Horrigan (talk) 15:30, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

"Acrobat" mother

The Muppet Show?
The Post-Python section here has a (fairly long) sub-secton on Cleese's appearance on the Muppet Show in 1977, which was added in this series of edits about five years ago. Does anybody know why? Was the appearance of particular significance to his career, or to the development of the Muppet Show itself? If not, a guest appearance should only warrant a sentence or so; anything more is a bit crufty, isn't it? Swanny18 (talk) 20:20, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
- There's been no response to this, so I'll assume the answers are "No", this has no particular significance; and "Yes", it only warrants a sentence or so. I've trimmed this bit back (drastically) and removed the sub-section heading. I trust that is OK with everyone. Swanny18 (talk) 16:59, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

Atheist category
Re this edit: In a March 2015 interview, Cleese said "I certainly don't think much of organized religion. I am not committed to anything except the vague feeling that there is something more going on than the materialist reductionist people think." This isn't quite the same as him saying flat out that he is an atheist, so it was removed per WP:BLPCAT.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 05:56, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Father's name Cheese
The claim that "His family's surname was originally Cheese, but his father had thought it was embarrassing and changed it when he enlisted in the Army during World War I" is uncited. I added an IMDB reference which supports the claim, however this was reverted as "IMDb isn't suitable for BLP sourcing". Therefore, as this was the only source I could find, I suggest removing the claim unless another source can be found.— Rod talk 06:45, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- The Cheese name change appears in various places, but it needs a reliable source. Sometimes these things get repeated even if they are not true, and IMDb is not suitable if a BLP claim is likely to be challenged. IMDb is similar to Wikipedia. This source in the Telegraph is better.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:10, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- I ran his fathers name through FreeBMD and found Mar 1894, Cheese, Reginald Francis, Barton Regis, [5] but nothing for Cleese. Not proof, but I'm more inclined to believe it.Derek Andrews (talk) 23:57, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- That's kind of shameless WP:OR that Wikipedia can't really do without. Thanks for looking. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:35, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

His current wife
John Cleese Tweeted 2016 03 17
"John Cleese @JohnCleese 3m3 minutes ago My wife,Jennifer Wade, has revealed in an interview that while many people know I am her husband, only a few are aware Eric Idle is her father" https://twitter.com/JohnCleese
Anyone want to add this bit of info to the article? Thanks. 24.204.160.147 (talk) 23:51, 17 March 2016 (UTC)
- Bit of a sourcing problem here. Jennifer Wade is Cleese's fourth wife, but the part about her being Eric Idle's daughter is sourced only to this tweet and is hard to find anywhere else. Was Cleese being tongue in cheek here?--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 05:53, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
Deleted scenes
Shoudnt we add the fact that he was in Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix? He was in a deleted scene. And here is the evidence to say so.

- Cleese doesn't appear in the full cast list of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (film) [6] so it may not be notable enough for a mention here. He may be in a deleted scene, but the sources given above are not really reliable enough.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 20:18, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

- Fan sites and other wikis are not reliable sources. Also, their content can change over time. I did have a look for a more suitable source mentioning this, but couldn't find one. Also, if a source was found, it would have some WP:TOPIC issues here and it would be more on topic at Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (film).--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 05:09, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
- Well could you do me a little favour and do some digging because i asked John Cleese when i sent him a fan letter and he told me that he was to be in the OOTP but his scenes were cut. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.166.67.157 (talk) 19:40, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
- This may well be true, but as I said above, it needs reliable sourcing, which there isn't online. Also it's more on topic for the article about the film. Sometimes deleted scenes are on the DVD or Blu-ray, and the sleeve notes for this could be used.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 19:49, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

- I've already done some digging to the best of my ability. This is mentioned online but the sources are not reliable enough. If someone has the DVD or Blu-ray of the film, please could they see if there are deleted scenes with Cleese.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:20, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

- I couldn't find this tweet but Camilla Cleese is his daughter. This has some WP:BLPNAME issues as the names of children, dates of birth etc are not really needed unless they add significantly to the article.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 05:31, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
Section on career of John Cleese
Should not the section on John Cleese's career mention how he presented a programme called "John Cleese Presents" which went out on BBC Radio Four at 9: 30 on a Wednesday morning in May and June 2017?Vorbee (talk) 17:28, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Albion: The Enchanted Stallion
He was in a 2016 movie called "Albion: Enchanted Stallion" but I couldn't find it in this filmography.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Gandrayda (talk • contribs) 01:19, 9 July 2019 (UTC)
- Albion: The Enchanted Stallion doesn't have a Wikipedia article, but it is on IMDb here. Cleese plays General Eeder. Based on the IMDb release info, it looks like this might be a direct-to-video film.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 05:18, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

I'd like to propose that (in section Fawlty Towers):
- Characters Manuel and Polly ought to be linked to;
- Catchprase (or whatever it's) "He's from Barcelona..." ought to be trimmed out - it's unnecessary sidetracking in this there article and sufficiently covered in respective articles about Fawlty Towers and Manuel. Thanks. -90.179.120.43 (talk) 18:24, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

If someone could remove "voice actor" from his occupations sections, that would be good. It's because the term "Actor" already covers both his live action and voice over work. 2600:1000:B04F:5154:D4AE:DDDD:C5D8:A0DA (talk) 04:54, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

"Voice actor" in the first sentance of the article still hasn't been removed yet, because the term "Actor" already covers both his live action and voice over work. As shown how it should be here: "is an English actor, voice actor, comedian, screenwriter, and producer." to "is an English actor, comedian, screenwriter, and producer. 2600:1000:B039:1953:A076:752:8884:90F5 (talk) 17:15, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

Surname pronunciation
The article currently gives the pronunciation of Cleese as /kliːz/
Do we have a source for this? Because I've always heard his name as being pronounced /kliːs/
Oska (talk) 10:51, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- I've tried, but I can't get the hang of the phonetic stuff. I would simply say that Cleese rhymes with cease and geese. HiLo48 (talk) 10:56, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- S or Z, now there's a question. It may depend to some extent on the speaker. IPA is never an exact science and is usually given when there is a risk of the name being mispronounced. It's interesting that the family's name was Cheese at one point, and this is definitely with a Z.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 10:58, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- No it doesn't. It rhymes with "these" and "cheese". So the IPA phonetic transcription is correct, as far as I know. Maybe there is a UK/US divergence here? Martinevans123 (talk) 11:01, 13 January 2021 (UTC) e.g. c/o Michael Parkinson in 2010: [7]
- You're right that Parkinson pronounces it with a /z/ and I've just watched a BBC clip where the presenter pronounces his name with a /z/ too when she introduces him. So perhaps I've just been wrong all this time. (Of course, my thinking on the matter is immaterial.) Oska (talk) 12:53, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- As a life-long UK resident and native English-speaker, and fan of Cleese since my early teens, I've never heard his name pronounced to rhyme with geese. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:57, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- This is an interesting problem. In Australia, the name always rhymes with cease and geese. Obviously it's different elsewhere. Wikipedia should probably mention both pronunciations. HiLo48 (talk) 20:27, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- I think you'll find it's pronounced /bɹuːs/: [8]. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:20, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

Cleese in an interview explains both the "Cheese" variant (his father's surname) and also pronounces his own name: Ref. Ep 01 of "Monty Python - Almost the Truth, the Lawyers Cut" (07min:05sec) link here: https://youtu[dot]be/8jWaXPj4ER4?t=424 which presumably is enough to answer much of the above debate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.183.67.181 (talk) 11:29, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
