Ted Simon's first contact with African Continent is at Maghreb. Given the world situation at the time of the trip, the tension between these governments and citizens Western were obvious. Ted Simon gets arrested on two seperate occasions (once in Tunisia and again in Egypt) as the local police forces think he might be a spy. In Egypt, Ted Simon travels a few miles of the journey by train, for fear of the army trying limit the free movement of traffic. His journey in Africa continues via the Trans-African_Highway_network.
