Sources

I have sourced the list in accordance with Wikipedia's Original Research and Verifiability policies. Basically, anyone described by a reliable source as "Muslims" or "Muslim-American" is on the list. Here are the few people I couldn't find anything for. If you have a reliable source that fits that please restore the names:

Mad Jack O'Lantern 18:18, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Mushin Muhammad

Removed. According to http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/87890,CST-SPT-moose08.article, his father changed the name when Mushin was four.

Yousef al-Khattab

Removed, as this person was deleted from Wikipedia because he is non-notable.

Removed the list of "terrorists"

1. The list was derogatory and is not something "notable" about Muslims as a whole, this page was meant for accomplishments and a sense of pride, not to put down a religion.

2. If you want to call those invididuals terrorists then we should open a page of "Christian terrorists" and include Bush, Charlemagne, and many others. I do not want to do this because it would be a POV war, and this is not what wikipedia is about.

3. I will however compromise if you decide to make a "terrorist" list for every other list of North Americans out there, that way we can have a balanced playing field, but to throw out a "terrorist list" on a page dedicated to Muslims in America, is more than islamophobia, it's inciting hatred and not necissary, nor does it pertain to the religion.

Lastly, feel free to make a wikipedia section entitled "Radical Muslims" or "Terrorist Muslims" and list names until your blue in the face, but to slam something like that on a list of American Muslims was very inappropriate. If you have a problem with this, message me. Haramzadi 06:36, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I disagree. Wikipedia is about neither enhancing Muslim pride nor putting down Islam. If there are biographical articles in Wikipedia that describe their subject as 1) American, 2) Muslim, and 3) a convicted terrorist, and they're numerous to warrant their own subcat, I see no reason to disinclude such a subcategory. Likewise, someone like Tim McVeigh would totally belong in an American anti-federalist terrorist category... if only I could figure out who else would be in the category with him. Ford MF 04:33, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
It is wrong to deny the fact that after 9/11 there is indeed a racial bias and xenophobic stereotype of American muslims in the U.S. Find one other list of individuals who are labeled as "terrorists". As I said, put a list of terrorists under every "list" of people and then this one can be re-added. Until then, if the "Muslim terrorist list" comes back, I plan on making a Christian terrorist list which will include Hitler, Bush, Charlemagne, and many others. Since terrorism goes against Islam, it is contradictory to put up a list of "terrorist muslims" as it implies that Islam condones terrorism which it doesn't. Haramzadi 05:29, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
I am in no way opposed to a cat for Christian terrorists. However, given that none of your primary suggestions have entries that even mention the word "terrorist", I imagine it might be a difficult category to populate at present. Radical Islam and its embrace of terrorism--contentious though it may be--is not an illegitimate line of inquiry. Ford MF 05:48, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

The coining of "terrorism" and it's correlation to Islam is a POV. Many people around the world see the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, the 600,000 murdered Iraqis, and U.S foriegn policy as "acts of American terrorism" or "acts of Christian terrorism". Some americans see these acts as "liberation" or "essential for American security". Many see the attacks done by radical islamic groups as "freedom fighting efforts" or "in response to American violence", so these are POVs. If we want to get technical, both me and you know the stigma and stereotypes in the media placed on Islamic individuals who engage in war. One can bomb an Iraqi city with napalm (MK-77) on behalf of America and call it "liberation" whilst an IED in response to this act would be deemed "terrorism" by most news sources, such is a POV. As far as this article, it is a list of Muslim Americans. To add a list of so-called "terrorists" would only further increase the generalizing and stereotyping of Muslims in America, as well as an unneeded emphasis on "terrorism" and "islam", as if there isn't enough emphasis on this biased correlation already. As I said, I am not up for a PoV war, but if theres going to be a list of "terrorists" under this religous list, then there should be one for every list, as I can think of quite a few individuals and leaders who have committed crimes that most people overlook as "politics", yet are quick to judge men in ski masks who bomb roads because their country is occupied. Again, I have no problem with you making such a list under Islamic fundamentalism, but not under a legitimate article that is supposed to represent a religion, terrorism is not part of Islam, as you said, just the "radicals" engage in it. Haramzadi 00:17, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
  • First off, alleged terrorists really have no place in this list - an encyclopedia is for facts, not allegations. Second, note how every other section lists Muslims by profession, not by a crime committed; as such, the section violates the "undue weight" principle of WP:NPOV, in that it implies that terrorism is a common role for Muslims. >Radiant< 09:48, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

I dont understand how the list is still not removed after all the users above have commented on the matter with great detail, Come on wikipedia you guys are better than this. I have nothing more to say except that I fully agree with the comments aboveDanialcs (talk) 16:23, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Why cant we agree that it is a much better idea to just put this said list under Islamic fundamentalism instead of just bringing it back like this without any comment. I am personally disappointed at the moderation here at Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Danialcs32 (talkcontribs) 01:51, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

This section is included because that's what these people's notability derives from. Little different than having a List_of_Jewish-American_mobsters means that Jewish Americans tend to be mobsters. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 01:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

sorry carlos but with a poor one sentence argument like that you are not just going to turn on a religion you know nothing about, so I suggest you leave this alone because you know nothing about the faith itself, if you did then you would understand the other muslims in this discussion. The idea is, terroism is against Islam but you are too ignorant to learn about the Quaran yourself and getting some legit sources before you barge in here and just add in sections that have been under a lot of controversey. thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.192.102.229 (talk) 02:34, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the personal attack. Terrorism is against the teaching of Islam does not mean that no Muslim will engage in it. Murder is against the teaching of Islam, Christianity, Judaism, but there are no shortages of Muslim, Christian or Jewish murderers in various jails around the world. Eating pork and drinking alcohol are against the teaching of Islam, should we remove all the names on the list who have ever done any of those things because they are not Muslim in your personal view? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 22:15, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

No problem, thanks for attacking my entire religion. I thought some one such as yourself should have half a brain to realize the difference between the severity of murder and eating pork. I just don't understand why there is not a Christian article like this one, and how you have the authority to block out anyone else's opinion on the subject so you can just keep it your way. You completely the above users arguments and just go with your ignorant way by abusing your power on this article. Also, how is it vandalism if I am just trying to make this article more logical and I am sure I know more about what a Muslim is than you do.-Danialcs

All you can do is hurl insults. There is no List of American Christians because no one has created it. Perhaps as you say, this should be here either. But if you have the good you take the bad with it. That's what neutral point of view (NPOV) is all about. There is certainly List of Christian evangelist scandals and other articles with NPOV recitations of Christian scandals. Your insults about half a brain, etc., reflect poorly on you - it is you who is insulting Islam by claiming to be Muslim and spouting all your rubbish. Get a grip.

In response to your personal message to me saying I should not read the article which you edited and protected to fit your personal views. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 03:57, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

EDIT: you said: Your message was rude and a disservice to your cause. I know many Muslims, and a comment like yours would never be made by any true Muslim. You insult Islam. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 03:53, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

First off sorry to hurt your feelings.

Okay, I insult Islam? I am pretty sure I am a true Muslim but then again I think you don't know what a Muslim is in your case terrorists are more Muslim than myself. Also, does my comment have anything to do specifically with Islam? you question my faith with no clear evidence and just use at as a shield to hide your lack of intelligence on the subject. You have no clear argument in this statement because you know you can't make one like the other users that have commented on your page here, a lot of us can conclude that you are just very mean and rude in general, never mind just ignorant. Anyways though, have fun administrating wikipedia just the way you are, congratulations you get to edit any article on wikipedia the way you want without anyone messing with it how cool must that be. No point arguing online with some one hard headed as yourself.

I am really disappointed with Wikipedia here. Why is the list of terrorists second from the top? Why is it here at all? A separate list would be fine, but to highlight it in this way is Islamaphobic. —Preceding

Page protection

Once again, unregistered users are putting in information that is incorrect and violative of WP:BLP. No sources? Don't include. Want someone added and you're not registered, put the name and sourcing on the talk page and another editor will add it if appropriate. Do not delete information here either except if violative of WP:BLP or lacks sources. Some of the entries may be controversial, but so is every other list of people. We can be mature enough not to vandalize the encyclopedia because we cannot handle controversy. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 00:56, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Have to protect this again due to BLP violations by anons. Now, have removed all unsourced names per WP:BLP. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 16:34, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Convicted terrorists

The whole "Convicted terrorists" thing could be seen as an attempt to bypass WP:NPOV. There is a difference between how a person proclaims their religious beliefs and how other people perceive a person's actions. Please bear this in mind when editing the article.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 16:01, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

"List of" articles are not good Wikipedia writing style at the best of times, particularly when they become hobby horses for whatever WP:COATRACK point that someone wants to make. This is nothing to do with being pro or anti Muslim, because the real problem here is allowing writing in a blatantly non-encylopedic style, where personal preferences can outweigh reliable sourcing and neutral point of view.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 23:50, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
@User:Mohummy: Now show your consistency by starting a "List of Christians/Jews/Buddhists/Sikhs convicted of crimes".--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:15, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
People who delete the terrorists section are those pushing a POV. All Muslims are to be listed, not just the ones you like, if the categorization scheme bothers you, then just have them all listed alphabetically without being dumped into categories, good or bad. Order

Although User:Swifteagle43 should not have edit-warred, I do agree with him that the current order of this article seems to spotlight terrorists in a way that isn't so neutral. I've changed the article to put the categories in alphabetical order instead. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 01:16, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Completely agree, and this is a neutral method of dealing with am editorial problem. However, should other lists happen to follow alpha order such that it appears that "villains" are give undue prominence, there might well be complaints. "Terrorist" is specifically listed in words to avoid, but on balance, I think this is better dealt with on a case by case basis. Rodhullandemu 01:31, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Should we change the name of the 'terrorists' section? If so, to what? Given the content of the article, I'd be okay with 'convicted criminals,' or 'murderers.' -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 01:36, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
I think if reliable sources describe as "terrorists", we don't have a problem. That's a political dimension that is somewhat subjective; but given the material that was deleted and replaced in the last 24 hours, it's perhaps a little early to apply that label. It's probably, as you suggest, more neutral to describe with respect to known facts. Rodhullandemu 01:44, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
I can go with that. And the people listed aren't the kind of 'arguable' terrorists/freedom fighters described in WP:WTA, I think. They've all been convicted in court of Very Bad Crimes. FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 01:47, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
With respect to John_Allen_Muhammad, although a member of the Nation of Islam, his murders seem to have very little to do with advancing a political agenda. So I don't regard him as a terrorist as such, ad I've refactored the heading to "Criminals", which is both neutral and beyond doubt. Rodhullandemu 02:01, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
And since 'criminals' starts with a 'C,' I moved the section closer to the top. Which may not make Swifteagle43 as happy, since it is now at the top again, but then again, maybe he'll agree. When his block expires tomorrow, he'll doubtless weigh in here. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 02:03, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
I know the names within the sections really should be alphabetized by last name as well, but I'm tired, and I'm going to bed. If anyone else wants the job, have fun with it. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 03:50, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
I have expressed concerns about WP:COATRACK in this article before. It is hard to remove sourced information without consensus, but people will ask why there are not similar lists of Christians etc convicted of various crimes. Some more debate is needed on this issue.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 09:15, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Are you suggesting that the list be deleted? Or that it be retitled something like "List of American Muslims who are Not Bad People?" -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 13:00, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
No, I've given up on any suggestions that might lead to edit warring. My main concern is the coatrack issue, since there is a need to look at why there are no similar lists for other religions.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 13:12, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
I guess I don't understand what it is you want to discuss. If you want to create List of American Christians, there's no real reason that you shouldn't. Have fun. The list of American Jews already exists, though it's a category, not a list. I don't really have any problem in deleting this list and making it a category instead. Seems to serve the same purpose. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 13:59, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
The article is now considerably better than it was at one point. Muslims should not be listed for crimes simply because they are Muslims, and there would need to be some notability involved.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 14:04, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Is there someone on the 'crime' list that you think shouldn't be? Being (a)Muslim, (b)American, and (c)notable seem to be the criteria for inclusion on this list. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 14:06, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
I don't have a problem with any of the names currently in the article, as there is reliable sourcing to back them up.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 14:13, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Nation of Islam?

I can't find a neutral reason to exclude members of the Nation of Islam from this list; the stated reason in the article is that they are racist and not mainstream, but both of those are statements of opinion and assume that Wikipedia is able to judge which Muslims are 'real' Muslims. I can't work out how to justify not adding those people to this article while still following WP:NPOV and avoiding original research. I'm open to other opinions here. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 01:33, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

This article does not distinguish between Islam and the Nation of Islam, which are two completely separate religions. Islam means peace, and the word is used frequently. This does not mean it is the same religion. If you see the wiki article on the Nation of Islam, the first paragraph reads:

"The Nation of Islam is a religious organization founded in Detroit, Michigan, by Wallace D. Fard Muhammad in July 1930. He set out with the goal of resurrecting the spiritual, mental, social, and economic condition of the African American men and women of America. The N.O.I. also promotes the belief that God will bring about a universal government of peace.[1] Mainstream Muslims consider the group to be a non-Islamic independent religion that has adopted Islamic terminology rather than an Islamic sect due to differing beliefs about God, race, and prophecy, among others."

It is a religion created for the use of African American empowerment in North America, but is not associated with the same belief system as Islam (just uses some of the terminology). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.139.17.177 (talk) 09:41, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

I was never interested in being a political artist, but all this has forced me to become a more political artist. And it has made me a better artist. There is such a misunderstanding of Muslims now, such strange misconceptions, such as the idea that Muslims hate America because of our freedoms. I want to do work that is honest, work that allows people to see another dimension of life."[4] The article also confirms that he is currently a Muslim. I believe Ethan Allen CEO Farooq Kathwari should be added to the business section. Also, Muzzammil Hassan should probably be moved to crime, as he has been convicted of murder and is in jail, not in business. The link is to Kathwari's biography on his personal website, noting his receipt of the American Muslim Achievement Award from the Islamic Center of Southern California.

Michael Jackson

I think Michael Jackson should be removed from the list, as per the reasons given on the FAQ on his wiki page:

Q1: Should the article mention reports that Michael Jackson was Muslim? (No.)
A1: No. The article should not mention reports that Michael Jackson was Muslim. Jackson had not publicly spoken about his exact religion in a number of years and only spoke about spirituality in general terms. The specific reports of a conversion ceremony for Jackson have been denied by his New York lawyer Londell McMillan.[5] They were also denied by Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens[6] and Dawud Wharnsby[7] who were allegedly present at the ceremony. The Michael Jackson memorial service did not involve any Islamic rites. Without further details from his family or representatives, it will not be included in the article.
I agree. Michael Jackson NEVER claimed to be a Muslim. He did, however, state that he believed in God, and quoted Jesus several many times. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.223.245.212 (talk) 11:13, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Either remove the list of Muslim criminals, or restore the list of Jewish criminals

So why is that when I added criminals to the Jewish section, these were notable criminals with sources and evidence to back it up, it was deleted. Clearly, bashing Muslims is OK, but when the same is done for Jews(with sources), since you want to play this gutter game, it is deleted. This is a direct violation of free speech. Terrorists have no religion. Either we allow criminal sections for both, or for none.

I would like to place another Muslim artist, a Sunni Muslim rapper named Blacc Magic from Baltimore, Maryland. Here is what I was going to write:

Not done you need a Wikipedia article to be included in this list - and as Blacc Magic is in red - it doesn't have an article - Arjayay (talk) 19:16, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

List of criminals?

Is this serious? there's a list of criminals? I cross-checked on the American Jews article( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_Jews_), and there is no such corresponding list. This is a joke or what? ~~

I guess it should be removed 67.80.214.221 (talk) 19:33, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Yes, there's a list of criminals. Do you believe that Muslim Americans are angels who have done to harm to anybody? You're either living in a fools paradise or simply in denial. Muslim Americans don't have a good reputation for a reason...and it's certainly not because of the "media". --PAKHIGHWAY (talk) 21:46, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
You might want to take your political or personal commentary about these demographic groups to a more appropriate forum, and assume WP:ETIQUETTE when conversing with your fellow users. This Talk should be strictly about the article and how to improve it. As far as "Criminals" go, many of the persons listed under other sections could be included as Criminals, for having been convicted of a crime at some point of time. It creates redundancy, POV issues, isn't a real 'profession', and is just better avoided. DA1 (talk) 07:01, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

Listing Druze as Muslims is at least questionable. The Wiki article on Druze seems to avoid this characterization, other than saying that it emerged from Shia Islam a thousand years ago.

It's more than questionable. Beliefs like reincarnation are fundamentally opposed to the idea of the afterlife in Islam. In fact, the Wiki article on Druze says, in so many words "Druze are not considered Muslims."

Its not only the Druze; as most 5 Percenters do not consider themselves Muslims. The use of Arabic or Islamic terminology, and their roots in the Nation of Islam, should not automatically be conflated with being Muslim. Druze and many Arab Christians have similar characteristics. In 'Five Percenter' philosophy, every member (or Black man) is a God, and therefore referred to as Allah. A pretty different interpretation from the Islamic concept of monotheism, and Allah. –DA1 (talk) 07:16, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

I guess it is this person, and since he is wearing a crochet taqiyah he is likely to be a Muslim as well. However, this needs a source, along with his US nationality.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 12:17, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

Where is Mona Eltahawy Nlivataye (talk) 08:05, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

The nationality of Mona Eltahawy is given as Egyptian and American; she was born in Port Said. As for her religion, this needs a reliable source.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 11:32, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
