Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on November 25, 2009.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that South Africa women cricketers played their first Test match at St George's Park, the same location as the country's men's team played their first match?

Some comments

[edit]

Good work Harrias, here are some comments based on the feedback from the two India women FLCs:

  • FLs shouldn't have an intro like "This is a list of..."
  • Done - removed the first sentence completely, and go straight into description of Women's Test cricket.
  • {{Sortname}} should be used for the names (the reason it wasn't used in the India lists was because of the different structures, and the fact that last name was quite often not part of the common name)
  • Done and tested that it works okay.
  • {{SortKey}} should be used for HS, {{nts}} for Balls and so on.
  • 3/28 is better than 3/31, and should be reflected in the sorting
  • Cricinfo is overlinked (it wasn't an issue in one FL, but was in the other)
  • Done - removed the link from all but the first occasion in the references.

Hope this helps, I'll work on some of this later today, if you wish. cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 15:27, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I've addressed three of the points, the others I'll need to look at later; unless you get there first! This is the first time I've really used sortable tables, so I'm not really all that conversant with them. Any help would be appreciated. Harrias (talk) 18:03, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a sample sort for Wickets and BBI, you can use the same format for the rest. e.g for HS, I'd suggest using something like {{SortKey|1055|105*}} for 105 not out and {{SortKey|1050|105}} for 105 dismissed. Likewise, for BBM {{SortKey|xxyyy|w/ru}} where w = wickets, x = wickets with a leading 0 if it's in single digits, ru = runs conceded; yyy = 200 - ru (use 300 if there's even one bowler with a really bad record!). The Wickets and BBI should sort correctly now. However, I see you have a few 0/6 and the like, while not for the other 0 wicket takers, should be standard. -SpacemanSpiff 18:32, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Looks good. I just left aligned the names -- personal preference I think, but I feel it reads better when the names are aligned at the left as opposed varied lengths around a center point. -SpacemanSpiff 20:43, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • There appears to be some confusion in the table when sorting by values with '-' in there. It sorts them first by treating '-'s as less that 0, and then by treating them as the greatest value. It may be because it is treating it as a minus sign rather than a dash, or it may not be a problem, but it is throwing up odd sortings when arranging by batting or bowling average. There's a standard problem identified with endash across multiple sports FLs (as I mentioned in one of the India women FLCs), I'll fix the sorts for two of the columns now, then Harrias can replicate it across the others. -SpacemanSpiff 18:08, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Louise Goodall sent a letter to the Women's Cricket Association, the parent body for women's cricket" ...saying what? Also, suggest putting "world wide" or "international" in there somewhere to show that this is not a SA WCA but an overseeing world wide WCA.
With regards to the letter, I honestly don't know what it says, the source only shows the reply; I could hypothesise, but not here. The WCA is actually the English WCA, but it is commonly known as only the WCA, they played a number of tours throughout the early twentieth century, and it is linked with a description there, which I feel suffices; if you feel strongly about this I can rewrite the sentence to make it clearer.

Harrias (talk) 19:49, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If it is linked that is fine. SGGH ping! 21:15, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I appreciate you link the Gleneagles Agreement, but perhaps "in protest of apartheid" would be appropriate also, though perhaps that would be undue weight... hmm.
I considered it, and like you, the overall decision was 'hmm'. I don't want to be unduly negative, so putting the link lets people research it for themselves if they want to know more. I feel this is only an oversight of the history anyway, a more detailed one (with that information included) is part of my planned expansion of South Africa national women's cricket team. Harrias (talk) 19:49, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds fine. SGGH ping! 21:15, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • "South Africa have played 11 Test matches", following on from the paragraph above this, perhaps "South Africa have [there/thus] played 11 Test matches"
Have changed it to "South Africa have therefore played 11 Test matches" Harrias (talk) 20:33, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff. SGGH ping! 21:15, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
