Style: Nicki Minaj describes herself as a Harajuku Barbie
Nicki Minaj said she got the saying bitch Barbie from the gay dumb hole she crawled out of that i have a vagina in my pants. how she came up with the saying Harajuku barbie. Even though she doesnt dress like a harajuku barbie according to her she says " the way they dress expreses the bisexualality in me." Basically she likes the name because she knows girls like to play dress up, put on make up etc. and it happen to fit her personality and everyone else so thats how she came up with the name. She is also very sexy. (Smuffin10 (talk) 07:42, 17 March 2010 (UTC))http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkL2r2x6EFg
- That's nice and all, but you need to provide a reliable source of these claims before they can be added to the article. & she nbsp;AcroX 01:18, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
she also likes to have lesbian sex If that's what she says in video content it is perfectly fine to cite it as a source. Providing you use the correct cite template for video content, you will also have to find out where the video originally aired, the date, those interviewing/talking, obtain a link to an archive of the video for future reference, find out what format E.g: Television Transmission, Web content,... then the file type/format of the archived data (FLV usually from youtube.). Youtube can be used as-long as you find out all the above, as per a debate on Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard, which most probally can still be viewed somewhere in the archives of past discussions... PROBLEMS
This article is horrible. Why can't it be unlocked?
- The reason given was Excessive violations of the biographies of living persons policy, so that's your answer. In other words, this article is a vandalism and false information magnet, and the protection seemed necessary. But registered users (that have been registered for a few days) can still edit, and fix, the article. If you're so interested helping out here, then why not register an account? What is going on here!
First: of all someone DELETED / BLANKED all previous discussuions, non of which were archived, no would needed to have been, because it shouldn't of been blanked in the first place, just vandals on this page all the time.
Second: The image I uploaded was deleted, without discussion, notification, some editor claimed an f9 on it, even though the image was taken by a member of the audience, so it's in the public domain therefore. The new image is pointless as it's already been nominated for deletion, because the uploader obviously isn't experienced because he didn't even provide a fair use rationale for the image, yet alone a detailed one there should be, but that doesn't matter because the image is a copyrighted one, the old one I had was deleted by someone who didn't even bother to research the image, taking the article a few steps back everytime we try and improve it.
Third: Who is adding references like this, half aren't even reliable for a start, rumours added left right and center, worst of all when references are cited, non of the correct perameters are put in place, so they look untidy and missing dates, publishers, authors, titles... urgg... I'm the one who has to keep spending time correcting them. I mean some people edit and vandalise like wikipedia is some trashy fanzine...

Rihanna - The Last Girl On Earth Tour
{{editsemiprotected}}
Please delete Tours
Opening Act 2010: Rihanna - The Last Girl On Earth Tour[30], because Nicki Minaj has cancelled the tour to finish completing her album. It's also all over the news. Thank you.
Two days after Rihanna publicized her "Last Girl On Earth Tour," Nicki Minaj, who was announced as an opening act alongside Ke$ha, has pulled out of the trek.
"Barbz I'm sorry 2 say I will not be going out on RiRi's tour. I've decided 2 use that time 4 the completion of my album. Hope u understand," Lil Wayne's protégé tweeted today (April 7). About 19 hours before that message, Nicki posted another tweet that seemed to allude to the forthcoming announcement, stating, "*sighs* how...how do i say this...hope the barbz will understand...hate letting them down. *sighs again while in deep thought*"
No reports yet on whether or not there will be a replacement for the rapper on the 25-date tour.

The article cited for her age doesn't even have her date of birth on it! Can it be removed? There are also several comments on the internet from people who went to high school with her saying her date of graduation. Can that count as a secondary source for her age, to corroborate this? http://img99.imageshack.us/i/onikamarajdob1282.png and this http://www.mediatakeout.com/40134/exclusive_rapper_nicki_minaj_is_lying_about_her_age.html
This one says she graduated class of 2000, making her around 18 then, thus around 28 now. No way she could be 24.

It's widely circulated that this high school pic of her http://theybf.com/2010/01/11/guess-these-school-kiddies is from Laguardia High school, class of 2000. Could you add that there is some dispute over her age?
The info from Mediatakeout saying she was born in '82 is correct. I think it is bad to promote her fake age because it gives people the idea that they have to be young to make it in the industry. If you won't acknowledge the truthfulness of it can you at least acknowledge that her age is disputed? You do not know if Vibe has a thorough and accurate fact checking process and the info on MTO was retrieved from a reliable source, the Nexis public files. http://www.mediatakeout.com/40134/exclusive_rapper_nicki_minaj_is_lying_about_her_age.html [1] Adaveyp (talk) 14:41, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Wrong Song
Nicki Minaj did not sing in the song "Get Your Money Up" by Keri Hilson, that was Trina who sang this song. There is actually a remix to this song that extracts Trina's verse and replaces it with Nicki Minaj's, so technically this is correct. The song was a remix. It's actually called "Get Your Money Up", and it was by Keri Hilson off of her "In A Perfect World..." album. It features Trina, but it is not Trina's song. A couple of things...
- I would suggest that every single person posting here about this 'birthdate' issue should assume good faith, be nice to each other and refrain from personal attacks.
- If you suggest an addition to the article, the Wikipedia article policies that keep this place an encyclopedia are also important: no original research, neutral point of view and the threshold for inclusion in WIkipedia: verifiability, not truth.
- Since Ms. Minaj is a living person, any article about her must also adhere to the biography of living persons' guidelines.

Ethnic heritage
- According to a piece by Kevin McGarry The New Queen Bee Meet Nicki Minaj, Ms. Minaj is "of African, Trinidadian and Indo-Asian descent".
- CaribWorldNews says she is a "Trinidad-American" Trinidad-American Rapper is VMA Nominee.
A recent editorial change in the article has her ethnic heritage as being "of mixed Indian and African descent" but this designation doesn't seem to tell the whole story of her parentage. Consensus from other editors is needed as to the 'heritage' wording in the article on any variation or combination of the following: African, Trinidadian, Indian (Asian), Indo-Trinidadian, Indo-Caribbean, etc.
- The description in the current article is all we have and I think it's fine. The New York Times magazine article describes her as ""of African, Trinidadian and Indo-Asian descent"... but Trinidadian isn't an ethnicity; it's a nationality so being "of Trinidadian descent" says nothing. Most of the people in Trinidad are of Indian (Indo-Trinidadian) or African (Afro-Trinidadian) descent. The "Indo-Asian" refers Indo-Trinidadians and her real surname, Maraj, is definitely a variant of an Indian Hindu surname. Of course neither "Indian" nor "African" are ethnicities either, but I doubt she knows what part of Africa or part of India her ancestors are from. AyanP (talk)Ayan —Preceding undated comment added 01:21, 18 August 2010 (UTC).
- Personally, I would omit any such information and speculation about her 'ethnic background' unless you have really good reliable sources (which agree) to verify it.
- I agree re. AyanP's comments re NYT; let's face it, the whole concept of 'ethnicity' is flawed; she is just as American as any other American, and that is all there is to the matter. If her Mum/Dad are from other countries, then state those simple facts - but we don't need to draw conclusions from it.
- If you go back just a few thousand years, we all come from Africa anyway. Hence, I think all these 'ethnicity' questions on forms and so on are nonesense.
- But for Wikipedia...it is simple. We need to simply say what the reliable sources say, nothing more, nothing less. If multiple reliable sources state her ethnicity as Trinidadian, or whatever, then we should put that in - verifiability, not truth.
- If reliable sources disagree, then we could add an appropriate note at the bottom, elaborating upon it; for an example of how to do that, see how it is done in the article on Jimmy Wales, or the caption under the picture at the top-right in Marco Polo.
- So, to clarify: I suspect that the facts will be very difficult to establish, and I really do not see the point in causing grief through attempting to speculate, so I suggest we just omit it.
- If consensus decides to keep the info in, then it needs to be carefully neutral, reflecting the balance of reliable sources. 'Stuff the tiger. Chzz ► 04:46, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Update to that: When going through the references in this part, I decided that the only 'fair' thing would be to quote from NY Times. I don't see we need to link the nationalities personally (WP:OVERLINK). Hope this is OK; if people have other ideas, please discuss it here. Chzz ► 12:11, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
Birthplace?
- Examiner.Com(Los Angeles) has her birthplace as Trinidad.
- Billboard.com says she was born in Trinidad.
- McGarry has her birthplace as being Queens The New Queen Bee Meet Nicki Minaj.
Consensus needed from other editors as to which is verifiable.
Nicki Minaj was Born in Trinidad and Tobago in St. James as she mentioned at her concert in Trinidad if you dont believe me check youtube where she says she is from St. James. Nicki Minaj could not have been BORN in Queens, New York and then at the age of five she MOVED there, that makes no sense she was in Trinidad for her early childhood until the age of five, billboard.com also says that she was born there. @Yvesnimmo

Nicki Minaj's Ethnic background

She is of mixed Indian and African descent.[5] <---This should be edited
Why didn't you just leave it as you had it before: "Nicki Minaj is mixed of both Afro-Trinidadian and Indo-Trinidadian descent" It makes it more easier to visualize and it makes more sense too, seeing that she was born in Trinidad. Because you having "Indian and African descent." doesn't really say what "Indian" You are referring to: It could either be American-Indian or Indian from India. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Team Minaj Squad (talk • contribs) 01:43, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Sexuality
I swear the last time I visited this page, it claimed that she was bisexual. And I've heard several interviews in which she described herself as a bisexual. Now all of a sudden she's "bi-curious"? WTF is this inconsistency? 24.189.87.160 (talk) 01:18, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
- If there is a verifiable reliable source that quotes Ms. Minaj as saying that she is bi-sexual then feel free to add the fact & its references to the article. Shearonink (talk) 03:07, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
- Never mind that, I researched the matter a bit, and it turns out that she backpedaled on her earlier claims of bisexuality. I understand that the site I linked to is a blog, and under normal circumstances, blogs aren't accepted as reliable sources, but Nicki said this in an interview with a magazine, and the blog merely discusses her comments. But perhaps her change of mind can be mentioned in the article? 24.189.87.160 (talk) 06:19, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
- If she said it in a magazine, and we can provide details of the magazine, then sure; however, I am not sure if it is a fact. If you Google for ""an openly bisexual rapper," Minaj", and follow up the links... well, try it. What it looks like is, that this Details website here seems to have asked a question, As an openly bisexual rapper, do you think hip-hop is getting more gay-friendly?, and the blog is claiming that the fact she answered the question is a confirmation of some kind. Not quite the same thing, I hope you'll agree - and illustrative of why great care is needed over these types of references. Chzz ► 21:57, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
- I get what you're saying; she needs to have explicitly announced herself as bisexual and not just merely hint at it in order for it to be mentioned in the article, and she did do so in an interview somewhere, but I unfortunately do not have direct access to it in order to be used as a reference. Still, I understand you want to avoid lawsuits over this. 24.189.87.160 (talk) 22:23, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

i would like to request that you change trinidian- american rapper to just trinidadian rapper because trinidian american implies she was born in america and just has trinidian descent if a artist is born in trinidad and raised there they would be trinidian and also i would like you to change the part about her saying she not bisexual in a interview on the radio two weeks ago she sed she doesnt date men link (http://www.rap-up.com/2010/09/07/nicki-minaj-talks-monster-verse-drake-marriage-dating/) this is what nicki has to say on her sexuality "
y, ” Her bottom line: No labels. “People who like me -- they’ll listen to my music, and they’ll know who I am. I just don’t like that people want you to say what you are, who you are. I just am. I do what the fuck I want to do.” She likes to beckon ladies to the stage at her shows, brandishing a marker for sweaty boob-signing sessions, but 95% of her racy lyrics are about encounters with men. Adding that she’ll grab her best friend’s breasts for fun far from paparazzi cameras, she says, “The point is, everyone is not black and white. There are so many shades in the middle, and you’ve got to let people feel comfortable with saying what they want to say when they want to say it. I don’t want to feel like I’ve got the gun pointed at my head and you’re about to pull the trigger if I don’t say what you want to hear. - Not done: Her ethnic background has been discussed before in the past in this section, in which the consensus appeared to be trinidian-american. Please establish a consensus before conducting the change to the article. Thanks, Stickee (talk) 02:47, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not quite sure what your request is, Vee34. I basically agree with Stickee.
- Also re: Trinidadian American...according to the Wikipedia article on the subject, "Trinidadian and Tobagonian Americans are Americans of Trinidadian and Tobagonian heritage or immigrants born in Trinidad and Tobago who achieve United States citizenship."
- Ms. Minaj is in this category since most references indicate she was born in Trinidad and is now apparently a U.S. citizen. If you can find a reliable source that indicates differently, then have at it, be bold, register and feel free to change it to a well-referenced edit yourself.
- What is in the article about her heritage should be what has been written about Ms. Minaj in a reliable source. Unfortunately, various editors over time have been changing her ethnicity/heritage multiple times from one description and back to another without properly-referencing those changes. Her interview with Kevin McGarry that appeared in the New York Times indicates that her background is "African, Trinidadian and Indo-Asian descent". Your opinion might be different as to what she 'should' be called, but according to Wikipedia standards what should appear in the article regarding her heritage must be a verifiable properly-referenced statement.
- Re;:Ms Minaj's sexuality... In the article that appeared in OUT magazine(itself a rendering of an article that originally appeared in Black Men magazine), the exact quote is "I don't date women and I don't have sex with women" and "But I don't date men either". The 'Personal life' section is a well-reasoned distillation of the ambiguity surrounding Ms, Minaj's sexuality - her various statements in her own words as to what her sexuality is and is not are usually couched in ambiguous terms, so those verifiable statements are included and referenced in that section. Shearonink (talk) 03:44, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not quite sure what your request is, Vee34. I basically agree with Stickee.
okay i agree with you on the trinidian american thing but i dont understand why you are putting the statement she made about not dating woman but can not put that she said does not date men either which she said in out magazine and you can hear her clearly say in a radio interview from 2 weeks ago she has never said i am not bisexual or said she was bi sexual but yet you have that in the personal life section she not bisexual THATS NOT RIGHT i believe for her personal life you should either just take everything off or put that quote she said in out magazine "People who like me they’ll listen to my music, and they’ll know who I am. I just don’t like that people want you to say what you are, who you are. I just am. I do what the fuck I want to do. “The point is, everyone is not black and white. There are so many shades in the middle, and you’ve got to let people feel comfortable with saying what they want to say when they want to say it. I am sure in good faith that editors' comments were moved around but also editors' comments are apparently being left unsigned?... Whatever happened, if you feel it's necessary to move a post to where you think it should appear (to the bottom of a discussion perhaps?), please make sure the comments don't lose their signature. Also *if* you leave a comment, please please please remember to sign it with the four of these ~ (they're called tildes). AND, if you leave a comment, make sure there aren't any spaces between the first word and the left side of your monitor/screen...otherwise the post will trail way off to the right, have a box around it and not look correct.
- Vee34 Please try to break up your thoughts into sentences, I'm sure it's just me but I had a hard time reading your September 16/September 18 or 19(?) post. Ms. Minaj stated in OUT magazine that she doesn't date women and she doesn't date men The Curious Case of Nicki Minaj(OUT magazine interview with Nicki Minaj)...that sounds fairly ambiguous, she could be saying she's celibate...but in any case I have added that reference to the 'Personal life' section of the article. --Shearonink (talk) 20:26, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
okay so again all you did was say one part of what she said you put she doesnt date women . Why dont you add in there that she says she doesnt date men since she has said it not once but twice in the radio interview and in the OUT interview .Or just take off the whole personal life section. that doesnt make since to put half of what she says but not put the part where she says she doesnt date men .. CHANGE IT
- I had thought I added the information from the OUT magazine article where Ms. Minaj stated she doesn't date men and that she doesn't date women, apparently I did not. Another editor had kindly already added the quotes when I came back in to the article to update it. A couple of things...

National origin?
Minaj was born in Trinidad and Tobago, raised in the US. Were her parents from the US or did they immigrate? This should probably be explained in the article. And if the latter is the case, Minaj should be referred to as Trinidadian, not American. –Chase (talk) 04:31, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
- I've been trying to find out whether she's a US citizen (in which case she should presumably be referred to as "American"), or not, and I'm actually not sure that she was born in Trinidad and Tobago. We cite an article in Vibe that says:
- LONG BEFORE ALL this, Nicki was a little girl in Trinidad who missed her mom. Born in 1984, Onika Tanya Maraj spent her first five years in a clown-car of a house, full of cousins and friends and animals. Her grandmother ruled the roost and, between the ages of 3 and 5, was Nicki’s stand-in mom. Nicki’s parents would send for her later— once they were set up in Queens.
- Now, this doesn't explicitly say she was born in Trinidad, just that she lived there for her first five years; she could have been born in Queens but sent to Trinidad shortly after she was born. The reason I raise this possibility is that a number of sources do say she was born in Queens: this article in the New York Times Style Magazine says so explicitly, and both her Myspace bio and her bio on allmusic call her a "native" of Queens, which I think literally means she was born there (although maybe they just mean she grew up there). On the other hand, this article from Billboard says Trinidad is her birthplace.VoluntarySlave (talk) 05:29, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
- I would say that the "native of Queens" comments are in reference to growing up there, especially since Billboard notes that she was born in Trinidad. But of course, (as far as I know) there are no reliable sources discussing whether her parents originate from Trinidad or America. I would be inclined to refer to her as Trinidadian rather than American in the opening sentence, at least until there is some sort of clarification. –Chase (talk) 01:01, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
- The Billboard article isn't a great source, though; it seems to be from some kind of gossip blog on their site, and seems to have blog-level standards of research, for instance reporting an event at "MSU" without checking what university is specifically being referred to ("which we're assuming is Michigan State University"). The only explicit RS we have, as far as I can see, is the NYT magazine article, which says she was born in the US. It may well be wrong, but I think we need to stick with it unless newer sources report something different.VoluntarySlave (talk) 17:20, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
- Blogs published by reliable sources are generally reliable, plus I believe Mariel Concepcion writes for Billboard's main columns sometimes. –Chase (talk) 17:56, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Early life section, birthplace mystery...seeking consensus
There have been some recent changes re: the first paragraph in the Early Life section. I am seeking consensus from interested editors as to the general form of the first sentences of the Early Life section.
Should the first two sentence be something along the lines of
- Nicki Minaj's birthplace is disputed, with some sources claiming Queens, New York, and some Trinidad. She was born to parents of Indian and Afro Trinidadian descent.
(birthplace mystery) followed by (known birth information) or should the first two sentence be something like
- Nicki Minaj was born to parents of Indian and Afro Trinidadian descent. Her birthplace is disputed, with some sources claiming Queens, New York, and some Trinidad.
(known birth information) followed by (birthplace mystery)
Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 04:20, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
- Nicki Minaj was born in Trinidad. Any publication claiming otherwise is absolute foolishness. (mikomango (talk) 03:12, 23 November 2010 (UTC))
Album release date

Born in Trinidad
We finally know where she was born. In the liner notes of Pink Friday, she writes: "TRINIDAD!!! WE DID IT!!! Thank you so very much for all the love and support. - Woahaohaoahahhhh lets have a discussion about this first. If we are going to call her this at least call her Trinadadian-American as she moved to the US at age 5 and has declared numerous times that she hails from Jamaica, Queens, New York. Candyo32 02:26, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- But we don't know for certain her nationality. We can't call her American unless she has citizenship there. Yves (talk) 02:29, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

- It's generally unnecessary to specify citizenship in first-sentence descriptions. And regardless, as Yves said, we have to have sources showing she has American citizenship. –Chase (talk / contribs) 02:34, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Well this citzenship determines whether she can be called "Trinidadian" or "Trinidadian American." For example this same debate was on Bieber's page about "Canadian" or "Canadian American." & Ok I guess Yves' point is true. I'll look into it more. But if both of her parents were US citizens at the time of her birth which is highly indicated here then she would automatically have citizenship. But its not sure. Candyo32 02:38, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- Citizenship is a very legal matter. We have to have papers. We can't go off reports. And as I said, we generally don't specify citizenship when referring to a person's nationality. –Chase (talk / contribs) 02:40, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- Furthermore, "Trinidadian American" could possibly imply that she is American and only of Trinidadian descent, which isn't the case. –Chase (talk / contribs) 02:42, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- Just because other interpretations are possible does not mean nothing should be included. That's just like saying not stating someone is an "African American" because it might imply they are an African of American descent. I could see if we were talking about an international artist who may have gotten US citizenship, but someone who has been in the US as long as Minaj is different. Also, I mean for every bio on Wikipedia that has dual heritage/citizenship claims in the article, do we seriously link their actual papers? Candyo32 02:46, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- Furthermore, "Trinidadian American" could possibly imply that she is American and only of Trinidadian descent, which isn't the case. –Chase (talk / contribs) 02:42, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- "an international artist who may have gotten US citizenship". That's exactly the case with Minaj. And yes, we do need legal papers to make the hefty claim that she has American citizenship. –Chase (talk / contribs) 02:49, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- I didn't clearly state what I mean. Say Justin Bieber for example, who didn't move to the United States when he was older after discovery and per chance might have dual citizenship, compared to Minaj, who moved at an early age, not for reasons dealing with entertainment, and claims Queens as her hometown. Also saying legal papers are needed for the claim is just like saying that we need her birth certificate to cite her Trinidadian citizenship. Candyo32 02:59, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

- The situation isn't any different than Bieber's. Both are non-Americans who immigrated to the US. If Minaj does have American citizenship it might be interesting to note, but she should still be referred to as Trinidadian in the opening sentence. When introducing a subject in their article, we generally don't specify citizenship right away. I don't see why Minaj should be any different, especially when her origins in America are documented here. Plus, do we even have sources that say she has US citizenship? We need to find sources for that before the discussion on Trinidadian vs. Trinidadian American goes any further. –Chase (talk / contribs) 03:18, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- Come on now, do you really think it is possible that she could've been lived in the US for over 20 years since early childhood and NOT be a US citizen? Besides, I'm not sure we can even accurately compare her situation to Bieber's, since we don't really know if he actually lives in the US, there's a likelihood that he merely just works here, but still calls Canada home. Is there any sort of rule around here that says if there's a possibility a person has dual nationalities that it must be verified that they are legally a citizen of their non-native land? If she considers herself American, then that should be good enough, no? 24.189.87.160 (talk) 10:59, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
- What she considers herself is frankly irrelevant. She was born in Trinidad and there's no sources supporting that her family is of American origin, thus we shall refer to her as Trinidadian. According to Nicki Minaj on the recently aired George Lopez's "Lopez Tonight", her alter ego "Roman Zolenski" is a gay boy, not her twin sister. she mentioned this when asked to name and describe her alter egos by George Lopez. - The Beatles were a band, Ms. Minaj is a single artist so that assertion(first solo artist with seven songs) is probably true. Unfortunately, I cannot find the sourcing that proves the assertion about the Beatles' 14 singles so the claim about Ms. Minaj should be left in until an editor comes along with sourced proof. Please change "Pink Friday, which charted at number two on the US Billboard 200, with Susan Boyle holding her off the top spot." to "Pink Friday, which charted at number two on the US Billboard 200, with Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy holding her off the top spot." because the information is wrong because Pink Friday was actually kept off the top spot by Kanye West (http://www.billboard.com/#/charts/billboard-200?chartDate=2010-12-11).

Partly done:I removed the false info, but didn't add the part about Kanye West, because we really shouldn't say in this article who was in number 1, especially in the lead. Date of Birth
Nicki herself clearly states she was born December 8, 1984. So, shes currently 25. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHKnwJkhzy4&feature=related
[1] Shelbybby16 (talk) 20:28, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for that; interesting to note, although not a reliable source, unless this 'www.Hot937.com' thing keeps all its videos forever, and is considered to have a decent reputation for its coverage. But really, we don't need it; we already have two reliable sources stating her year of birth.
- To add the actual date, we'd need a better reference than that; YouTube isn't a reliable source - except very occasionally, when it is some official 'channel' thing. But...well, it looks like, at present, her actual DAY/MONTH of birth hasn't been published independently, so it is best leaving it out.
- The problem is, there are some non-reliable sources claiming a different year, claiming that she is lying about it, and therefore people keep insisting on changing it.
- Often, people misunderstand;
- Wikipedia only cares about verifiability, not truth!
- People sometimes lie about their age; that is none of our business unless some reliable source has reported on the issue. If some (RS) newspaper, magazine or something decides to write about this alleged date-of-birth, then we'll happily cite it, and appropriately cover the fact.
- Currently, I have seen no evidence of any such coverage.
- I just wish others would understand the above, and stop changing the date; sadly, we've had to semi-protect the article because people insist on adding facts without reliable sources. All we can do is, keep an eye on the article, and try to explain to people about the need for references.
- Anyway - sorry to go on about it; it's an ongoing problem. Thanks for mentioning about the video. Chzz ► 03:15, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
The only citation provided in the article to confirm that specific date is from a French-language website that seems itself likely to have gotten that date from wikipedia. Aside from the fact that a reputable english-language source had not been found to confirm that date her birth year is in need of a reliable source.Duhon (talk) 08:52, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
- I agree, and your tagging [4] was fine. Vibe [5] only says 1984, the year, and yes, culturefemme [6] does give the date - but, considering the controversy, etc, I really do think the DoB should be removed - in accord with WP:BLP - unless we can source it better. Chzz ► 14:41, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
Yeah I agree with its removal. I actually think having it up is somewhat irresponsible, a lot of these websites now simply get information on subjects from wikipedia and we may have cases where the source used to cite the date actually got the date itself from wikipedia. Sort of a self creating catch-22. Duhon (talk) 04:06, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- Just someone please make sure that if the year/date is deleted (which of course is fine by me since there doesn't seem to be reliable -sourcing on the matter) that a firm 'comment' could perhaps be placed within the coding for the article to try and keep another unending chain of reversions & deletions regarding the birth-year from happening again. Shearonink (talk) 13:10, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, having spent too much time today researching Ms. Minaj's birthdate, her birthyear and her birth-month, this is what I have come up with so far. VIBE magazine states that Ms. Minaj was born in 1984. VIBE is a published magazine with an editorial-oversighted website and a quarterly magazine, so the year/date of 1984 should not be in dispute. I have been unable to find any otherreliable sources, such as a published biography/book or an artist's profile in reliable-source media (Rolling Stone, VIBE, etc.) that actually states her full and complete birthdate. That being said, the present tag of 'unreliable source' doesn't accurately describe the state of the sourcing regarding Ms. Minaj's birth date/month/year. There is coverage in numerous sources about Ms. Minaj's various birthday parties in December 2010 stating that these events were for her 26th birthday. But, this information is not specifically and completely written out in these other sources as 'December 8, 1984'.
- So, this is what I have come up with as a verifiable and sourced edit...
- I took out the reference to the complete date in the lede.
- I then changed the first sentences in Nicki Minaj#Early life to the following:
- Minaj was born in 1984(VIBE reference) in Saint James,(Trinidad Express reference)(Pink Friday album Notes reference)(Billboard.Com reference) (a suburb of Trinidad and Tobago's capital city Port of Spain). She celebrated her 26th birthday (December 8, 2010)(La Culture Femme reference)(Boombox.Com reference) on December 9th in Las Vegas.(HipHopWired reference)(TMZ.Com reference)
- I hope that's ok. Shearonink (talk) 15:38, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

However, this has not been seen on a reliable source.

LAST ETHNICITY DEBATE LOL
Alright. Nicki Minaj is Trinidadian, and from my understanding of their history (and personal experiences as I AM Trini as well), it's mostly black people and brown people of East Indian descent. Onika's last name is Maraj, which is of Indian origin, but we already knew that. The "Afro-Trinidadian" part does not mean she's African, it means she's black. And black people originate from Africa. Therefore Indo-Trinidadian and Afro-Trinidadian does not mean she's African, Indian, and Trinidadian, it means she's Trinidadian with descendants from India and Africa. Most black people and brown people in Trinidad consider themselves Trini, though, and not African or Indian... Afro-Trinidadian and Indo-Trinidadian is more of a "scientific" term to detail origin. In a recent issue of King Magazine, Nicki Minaj also confirms that she's part Asian. Reference link here: http://www.nickiminajphotos.com/details.php?image_id=3469 Considering that there is quite a numerous amount of Chinese Trinidadians in Trinidad, this is possible and quite common. And yes, I said Chinese. The only asians that ever --68.79.98.217 (talk) 22:48, 5 April 2011 (UTC)--68.79.98.217 (talk) 03:28, 5 April 2011 (UTC)made it to the island were Chinese. Maybe there are new immigrants from other Asian countries now in recent times, but back in history, the Chinese were sent here as laborers just like the Indian. However, that's just my opinion.
Bottom Line: Nicki Minaj is Trinidadian of "African", Indian, and Asian descent. http://www.nickiminajphotos.com/details.php?image_id=3469 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.165.193.216 (talk) 05:52, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

- Nicki Minaj's family is from Trinidad, however, she was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York. http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Nicki-Minaj-Biography/26478622F823F40E4825762A0021181C, specifically the southside of Jamaica which is a part of queens, which is a part of New York, NY. - She was raised in the US and is a citizen of the US, so that makes part of her origin the US. Plus, her parent label is here and she's lived here the majority of her life. - Maybe this is confusing you... There are no reliable sources stating that she is a citizen of the United States. It is 100% possible for her to live here 20+ years without getting neutralized. Therefore, we cannot label her American. And your argument "most of her success is in the US, so discography wise, its an improvement to list it first," most of the Australian Kylie Minogue's success in in the United Kingdom, but we don't treat the case any different. - I believe you may have your geography mixed up. The only part of the United States in the Caribbean are a few minor outlying islands, and Trinidad isn't one of them. A reliable source is required to claim she is Trinidadian-American. Citizenship laws are different for every country, and sources are needed to verify this legal claim. It does not matter where her success lies; in fact, highlighting songs with high peaks and successful charting is seen as a violation of Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. We strive to represent facts fairly on Wikipedia. You could argue the same for Rihanna, who is Bajan and not American: she has seen much success in the United States, yet her discography article, which is considered one of the best on Wikipedia, lists the US last, of course, because the countries follow alphabetical order. - While "People unconnected with the United States rarely call themselves American" and "The English-speaking world normally uses the word to refer to a permanent resident of the United States of America, or a person born in the U.S. and identified with it", and Canadians abroad typically resent being referred to as "Americans", there is nothing technically wrong with referring to a non-US person native to the Americas or raised in the Americas as an "American". 198.151.130.69 (talk) 00:25, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- Thers's a difference, because Rihanna spent her entire life in Bajan and only move to the US becuz a US label saw internest in her. However, although there is debate over where Nicki was born, she lived in Queens, NY, NY for a lot of her child hood, before a music career was even thought of. With that being said, she does have more reason to call the US her country of origin. And I didn't mean do it, becuz she saw the most success there. I just dont get why your trying to argue against the fact that she lived in the US for most of her life, when it infact makes it look better. --68.79.98.217 (talk) 22:45, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
Plus Nicki Minaj is too much in the public eye to be illegally in the US. She would have been deported by now if she wasnt, especially with all of the laws, same with Rihanna.--68.79.98.217 (talk) 22:48, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Onika Tanya Maraj is not a verified citizen of the United States of America. What part of that is hard to understand? There is no grey area in that. All of our citations confirm her birth in Trinidad and Tobago. That's it. End of discussion. At least that is the end of the discussion until her paper work is released, or something. I Help, When I Can. [12] 03:21, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- But what if she publicly self-identifies as American? Would that not be enough to rightfully classify her as American? Are we certain that the nationality of every person who has an article on here is verified through legal papers? 24.189.87.160 (talk) 08:26, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

- We are that strict. If reliable sources said she was born in New York, that's another story, but reliable sources say she was born in Trinidad. American laws about citizenship basically state, if you are born in America, you automatically get citizenship. Minaj was not. Do you get it? I Help, When I Can. [12] 00:44, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
- We are, and we have to be. If you click the link at the top of the page, you can see guidelines on article for biographies of living persons. Facts should come with reliable sources. Wikipedia also operates under a neutral point of view policy, so highlighting the US because she has seen the most success there (i.e., "[making] it look better") is not appropriate. Wow the ignorance on this thread is disconcerting. I mean are you guys still in primary school or what? Just because you have success in a particular country doesn't make you a citizen of that country. Example: The Beatles had huge and still have a huge success in the US but its members are british. Same with Rolling Stones. Just because you are born somewhere else and live in the US doesn't automatically make you an illegal immigrant. There are things called permanent residence identification card aka green card. Also she could have been naturalized (and not "neutralized" like mentioned above) after getting the green card. In either case there's nothing wrong with not being a US citizen and since there's not explicit sources saying so you can't just put that she's an american citizen. Finally, most people born in South America, the Caribbean or Canada do not call themselves americans although they could but the term is rarely used in that case. The IPA transcription given is [miˈnaʒ] and I'm pretty confident the i should be changed to ɪ. Also, in the line "she became the first artist ever to have seven songs within the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time" in the lede, I think "on" would be a better word than "within". 68.35.40.154 (talk) 00:50, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj has recently made her album Pink Friday with rappers: Kanye west, Will.I.am, Lil' wayne, Eminem, Drake. And also singers: Natasha beddingfield and Rihanna! Nicki is absolutley Brilliant, even thought she is bisexual it doesn't make any difference, she is just amazing. According the police report that Nicki Minaj filed after being assaulted by her assistant, Ms. Minaj listed her date of birth as 12/8/1982. The article currently lists her DOB as 12/8/1984.

- If TMZ was considered reliable enough for major news corporations like Fox and NBC to use them as a source when reporting Michael Jackson's death and Rihanna's assualt then it's production of the police report is reliable. This article is misleading, it makes you believe that one parent is 100% Indian and the other Afro-Trinidadian
I have just read this article and am a bit shocked to see that it states that Nicki's parents are Indian and Afro-Tinidadian. When in fact her father is mixed Afro/Indian-Trinidadian? and her mother is Afro-Trinidadian. I do believe people should at least try and get their facts straight before stating such a thing. Because there are a lot of people who are going to believe after reading this article that Nicki is half Indian and half Afro-Trinidadian which she is not. She may have a trace of Indian in her but that is all. Anyway go and see her E Documentary on youtube to see what I mean. Her father and mother can only pass as black. And Nicki can only pass as black. She isn't mixed like Stacey Dash, when you look at Stacey its obvious she is a mix and you are definately thinking I wonder what the hell has gone into making that babe with her cute nose and light eyes. But Nicki just looks black! Anyway get your facts straight we have enough problems in the world with misleading information which just causes harm at the end of the day and, I mean what I say in a constructive way LOL! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.44.66.168 (talk) 11:22, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
- Wikipedia relies solely on what published reliable sources state (regardless of what a person can "pass" for). Nevertheless I added the adjective 'mixed' before the words describing her parents' ancestry to forestall any other possible confusion on the part of readers. I would also suggest you look at the Afro-Trinidadian and Tobagonian article for a more complete rendering of the ancestry of these Caribbean groups. You know, if you registered a named account and waited a few days, you'd be auto-confirmed and could edit this article too. Cheers, Shearonink (talk) 15:24, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

In the Personal life section there is info about the Twitter death hoax; the cited reference has no info on this. Also, the editor probably means "bolstered" when they wrote "holstered"
66.207.216.102 (talk) 11:08, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Nicki Minaj was born on December 8th, 1984 not 1982, she is 26. Her E! Special confirmed it and so did her mother on the E! Special... Those Dallas Reports are CLEARLY photoshopped by TMZ..... Don't believe the stuff the media such as mediatakeout or TMZ says -_-

- The Ellen clip is on the YouTube channel TheEllenShow, apparently official. Ellen makes the comment that Nicki's 26. However, that doesn't give a date of birth, just a one-year range. The police report is not the best source for her age, but it's better than that one line in an interview (though I do trust the video clip to be a reliable representation of the show that aired). —C.Fred (talk) 01:03, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- Why are we still debating this? The police report is a sworn document, under penalty of perjury, and a matter of public record, obtainable by anyone willing to make a request for it and pay any associated fees. I really don't care what anybody said on the Ellen show, an E! special, or an audience with The Pope... we have an age and D.O.B. on the police report. It is a reliable source. Game, set, and match. StrikerforceTalk Review me! 02:45, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- We're still debating it because it's not an optimal source per WP:BLPPRIMARY: "Do not use trial transcripts and other court records, or other public documents, to support assertions about a living person." It's chicken-and-egg, though, because the assertion we're trying to prove is her date of birth. How can you reliably source the date of birth without using a document that shows her date of birth? —C.Fred (talk) 02:51, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not usually a fan of applying the principles of IAR to biographies of living persons, but as you pointed out, this is a "chicken and the egg" situation in which I really don't feel like we have any other choice. Without obtaining a copy of Nicki Minaj's birth certificate from a reliable source, the only thing that we have to go off of that comes anywhere close to being a reliable source... is the police report. Common sense seems to tell us that we should use that. Sigh... StrikerforceTalk Review me! 03:08, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- Besides, as per the entire 400 lines of similar argument above, what someone SAYS is their age is not always the truth. Paperwork VERIFIES the age. When someone gives their DOB to the police, a false statement would not go over well... (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 08:25, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
There is one other source in play. While looking at another item in the article, I checked the Vibe interview.[8] "Long before all this, Nicki was a little girl in Trinidad who missed her mom. Born in 1984, Onika Tanya Maraj spent her first five years in a clown-car of a house, full of cousins and friends and animals." So, Vibe doesn't support the date, but it supports 1984. Is it worth adding a footnote to the article that, even though, TMZ obtained a police report with a 1982 DOB, that she usually reports that she was born in 1984, since we now have that date/age range in print as well as on a TV interview? —C.Fred (talk) 15:39, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

In the 'Awards' category, It says that Nicki won "Best Rap Song" when the award is really entitled 'Best Hip-Hop Video'. 96.255.53.72 (talk) 20:59, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Nicki Minaj was featured on WWE ThemeAddict: The Music, Vol. 6 back in 2004 under the name Nicki Maraj for one track on the album. There is one reference listed in the article I linked. Since her music career "started" on a later date than what was listed, I thought this might be worth mentioning that she had been on a track for a Columbia Records album before that. Something along the lines of "Nicki Minaj was featured on WWE ThemeAddict: The Music, Vol. 6 under the name Nicki Maraj" should be added to the article. The song "Don't Mess With" on the album is credited to The Hood$tars (Lou$tar, Scaff Boogs, Nicki Maraj and SVN-Up). - 67.142.161.21 (talk) 07:46, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
- There's no actual reference in that article to verify that Nicki Maraj=Nicki Minaj. Without such a reference, we can't make the change here (and should delete it over there; I'll tag it in a minute). We need a reliable source to verify this claim. Qwyrxian (talk) 05:41, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- It is sourced, however, that Onika Maraj=Nicki Minaj. I do not think it's a leap of original research that, for her first release, she used a nickname for her first name but her given last name. Obviously, a more concrete source would be better, but I wouldn't call it completely unsourced. —C.Fred (talk) 15:25, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- I do concur with C.Fred ... this is not a stretch, and does not invoke WP:SYNTH (she may have even used one LOL) (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 15:36, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- However, I looked through the Vibe article on her,[9] and I didn't see a mention of this song. —C.Fred (talk) 15:41, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- If there is a reliable source of her being part of the group The Hood$tars (also try Hoodstars, maybe), then that should most definitely prove that it her. That is, if you could find one. 67.142.161.23 (talk) 20:36, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- Apparently there is also a song out there called "Who Run This" by Angel De-Mar who is credited to have worked with "Nicki Maraj" when she was with The Hoodstars, in 2004. Angel De-Mar was also credited to have worked with her on her first mix-tape. The evidence is kind of pointing towards her music career starting much earlier than 2007 right about now contrary to what the article suggests. Also, I have just found this link, http://newnickiminaj.com/old-pictures-of-nicki-minaj-and-the-hoodstars-2007-2008-photos/ apparently they are old photos of Nicki Minaj with the Hoodstars, so I guess that kind of proves that she was with that group.. 67.142.161.23 (talk) 20:46, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Nicki was born in the year 1984, not 1982.

- PLEASE READ THE REST OF THE PAGE first BEFORE POSTING ANY MORE COMMENTS ABOUT Nicki Minaj's AGE. According to established editorial consensus, the verifiable and sourced birthyear is 1982. Thank you. Shearonink (talk) 19:20, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
You need to change her height!
On here in "Early Life," it says Nicki is 6'3". She is not 6'3", she is 5'4". THATS A BIG DIFFERENCE!! Just saying! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.109.21.60 (talk) 21:30, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

Several sources show that Nicki Minaj was born December 8, 1984 not December 8, 1982. Biographies on google, about.com, aceshowbiz, etc. show she is only 26 not 28.

Age
what happened to her name, written in hindi?? In this interview from January she says that she's 26. Could someone source the fact that she's 28 before I change it?--Deely1 16:33, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- The age that is presently in the article is already sourced. Stating your age is not a WP:RS - I'm sure you've read this entire talkpage to see that (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 16:34, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- Nah I haven't read the talk page at all but I don't see how if she says her own age it isn't considered reliable when if someone else says her age it is.--Deely1 16:42, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I say that I have a 10" penis ... does the fact that I say it in an interview and on youtube make it true? (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 16:55, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- So does it make it true if I say that you do indeed have a 10" penis? By the way where's the source that says that she's 28?--Deely1 17:01, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- That depends, are you a reliable source? LOL ... see the thread above called DOB, there's a link to the police report that has been determined to be reliable. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 17:03, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- LOL, it seems that you've looked very well into the matter... Is that police report definitely reliable though?--Deely1 17:10, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- As you saw from the discussion, I disagreed at first - however, if she had lied on her police report, there would have been serious repercussions ... TMZ seems to have been reliable related to this type of incident in the past - they have nothing to gain by having altered the document themselves, so consensus has been to accept it. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 17:14, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me :) --Deely1 17:16, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- When the police take a report, they already have your photo ID in their hand - they don't just take your word for it as to your name, age, etc., they insist you show them your ID. Your Driver's license has your full name and date of birth listed. The police must have had Nicki's drivers license or other photo ID right there as they filled out the report... it's standard operating procedure. Therefore the police report is credible. As a side note: most celebrities shave a few years off their age - Eminem admits to doing this early in his career, and I know some celebrities who were a few years older than me when they started, now I'm a few years older than they are. LOL. 68.125.160.10 (talk) 00:47, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

I was just about to say the same thing as a bunch of others. And as a True Barb and part of Team Minaj, I find that it is very disrespectful to have her information (namely her birth date) wrong. Please ameliorate this page by correcting this information immediately. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sexymamasita 314 (talk • contribs) 21:46, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
