First off-road sanctioning body and event[edit]

From the article: The first recognized off-road racing sanctioning body in North America was the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA)...The first event was a race across the Mexican desert.

Wondering where this info comes from as it’s totally incorrect. Off-road racing had been going on for decades before this organization was started. A quick search and I can find info to the contrary. [23] --I already forgot 22:46, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great find. Would you rewrite the article to clean it up? It would be great to see the history expanded to the early 20th century. I threw down a quick edit, but I would like you to expand on what I wrote. Royalbroil T : C 05:47, 25 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

8 fatalities in 2010 California 200 off-road race[edit]

The 8 fatalities in the 2010 California 200 race were a big news event, primarily because they were dramatic and caught on video. But 1,747 Americans were killed in off-road accidents in 2007. They were killed in all sorts of ways, for example, 221 were crushed when a vehicle backed over them. See [24] (PDF). Off-road racing is inherently dangerous, as is all motorsport, and if this article -- or a separate article with a history of off road deaths -- were to survey the complete story of these many, many accidents, that would make a coherent article. But to mention this one recent incident where a mere 8 people were killed as if it were the only notable off roading accident is myopic to the extreme.

This is part of the reason for the policy Wikipedia is not news. News events are reported as they happen but an encyclopedia takes the long view and doesn't get carried away with recent events. --Dbratland (talk) 02:10, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. The accident was tragic and is clearly a big issue right now but in the big picture of quite a short article on off-road racing it is not significant enough to warrant mention.Dino246 (talk) 04:59, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Picture in the 'Europe' section[edit]

I've removed the Erez Raider.JPG image because it doesn't add to the article. Firstly, Israel isn't part of Europe, and secondly the whole article is devoid of pictures and there are better descriptive pictures for the article than this. --Abderrahman (talk) 20:50, 21 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've put the image back outside of the Europe section. As you point out, without it the article is devoid of pictures to illustrate the topic.Dino246 (talk) 16:49, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't the article contain more pictures demonstrating offroading sport? Maybe a car jumping in a rally, or a Dakar racer in action? The US also has all sorts of offroad sports but no pictures.
On a different note, I think the article is too short and doesn't do the sport justice. Europe is barely two paragraphs, and famous rallies outside the US aren't mentioned. --Abderrahman (talk) 20:37, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
