Pauline (Nintendo) → ? – Per WP:NCVGDAB, this article should be at either Pauline (Mario) or Pauline (Donkey Kong). I'm not sure which franchise we should use here due to how the Donkey Kong and Mario franchises were created and have grown over the years. Right now I don't have a preference between the 2. • Support (Mario), better known for appearing in the Mario franchise and that's how the page is written Nohomersryan (talk) 22:27, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose There are no good options for a series since she is a cross-franchise character. How the title is right now seems like the best possible option.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 18:13, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The current title for a cross-franchise character is just fine. I am unconvinced by the nominator's reliance on WP:NCVGDAB to justify the DAB change in this instance. This feels more appropriate as a general talk page discussion in search of a potential solution, since there is no specific outcome for the DAB actually being requested. Disagreement on where the name came from

[edit]

This article discusses the origin of Pauline's name and brings up that the often reported origin as stated in this article might not be accurate. ★Trekker (talk) 21:01, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't there more than one Pauline from Nintendo?

[edit]

Pauline is a character from Rhythm Heaven but this page is called Pauline (Nintendo) and not Pauline (Mario). Can you please move this, please?

Is that character noteworthy enough that anyone would be likely to think of her instead of this Pauline when hearing "Pauline" and "Nintendo" together?★Trekker (talk) 21:38, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's like calling the Albus Dumbledore page Albus (Harry Potter), there is another Albus in the Harry Potter franchise, even if he isn't noteworthy enough QarryMotter (talk) 11:29, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No because neither Pauline has more than one name. If the character Albus Dumbledore was only known as "Dumbledore" his article would probably be known as just "Dumbledore".★Trekker (talk) 21:40, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But that will never happen because there is more than one Dumbledore. Abeforth, Aruleus, Ariana, Percival QarryMotter (talk) 16:43, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes those characters were introduced later on but thats not really important, if Albus Dumbledore had only been given one name (like Pauline) his article would probably be at "Dumbledore (something)". Point still stands that only one character in this case is really noteworthy, a completly non-notale character like Pauline/Poline from Rhythm Heaven isn't going to be confused for Pauline who was Mario's first love interest.★Trekker (talk) 11:10, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox categories

[edit]

Starting a discussion here to avoid an edit war. Tagging Kung Fu Man.

I understand your desire to not have the infobox filled with useless, in-universe background info, but in my opinion the categories I added are all warranted and should not be classified as cruft.

Adding "Lady" as an alias clarifies her connection to the original Donkey Kong arcade game, clearing up any confusion readers may have of her modern, seemingly newly created current look. It directly shows readers that, despite her new name and appearance, she is the same 'Lady' as the only in the arcade game. No, Lady isn't a commonly used alias, but it's a particularly important one; Pauline is only somewhat notable for being such an old character.

This also goes for the "significant other" category. Having Mario be displayed as her ex-boyfriend directly in the infobox is a major part of Pauline's character, notability, and overall significance. Again, one of the only reasons she is still talked about today is because she was Mario's original love interest. It additionally distinguishes her from Peach, whom many readers might simply assume is the damsel in distress from the arcade game. Note this history in the infobox is not fancruft, it's helpful to readers.

Finally, listing 'Mayor' as her occupation shows her current role in the modern Mario franchise. While she may have started off as the damsel in distress from the arcade game, she is now mostly prominently portrayed as the mayor of New Donk City/NYC. This is her contemporary place in the franchise, as seen in both Odyssey and the recent movie. Just as Mario's role as a plumber is a core part of his characterisation, Pauline's status as Mayor is one of her modern defining traits. It is not just a piece of un-notable, background fancruft.

While these categories may seem unnecessary, they are all defining parts of her character, and help readers get an understanding of her background, history, and contemporary portrayal. If this is all simply a case of fancruft, what's the point in having any information on her in-universe characterisation at all? Not all details like this are just incidents of fans adding unnecessary tidbits; these are all as important as her individual voice actresses or most recent appearances.

Apologies for the essay, I didn't mean for this to be such a long explanation lol. Loytra (talk) 01:55, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I get the thinking, but I do feel that those categories filled in don't really bring anything to the reader. Like the Mayor part is definitely an important aspect of her character, but we can discuss that better in her article. It can also confuse the reader. Like was she a Mayor during the original Donkey Kong? And if we clarify that then it takes up more space in the box. Take by comparison Mike Haggar where he's well known as a mayor in several titles but it doesn't outright have to state that. Same with Sig. other, and especially on other articles where you have characters like this with multiple incarnations which are not always the same (like she's not Mario's ex in the Donkey Kong cartoon, nor the new movie etc).
Alias is probably the one I can get, but I feel that should be best used for readily used nicknames like say with Donkey Kong how he's known as DK, or Kratos being "The Ghost of Sparta". The name in that game was more a placeholder before they became characters (same with Jumpman for Mario) and not something really used beyond it. So that's the main argument against it there. How are you feeling on these?--Kung Fu Man (talk) 02:16, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
