My Edit

Hello all...I have edited the article in a few places to make it more informative and have attempted to give good cadence to certain historical sections. I have also corrected a few grammatical/technical errors as well. --Ruckie84 (talk) 04:37, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

STOP Removing Pictures

All of these pictures on the page have been taken from their original source and so there should be no violation of any copyrights whatsoever, after all, proper attribution and credit has been given to the production firms. (May 19, 2008) - Ruckie84

  • I suggest you read this for clarification on Wikipedia's non-free image policy. Polly (Parrot) 21:48, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
  • I have taken note of your concern and I have altered the licensing status for each of the images and hopefully that should rectify any complications as to any possible copyright infringement issues. --Ruckie84 (talk) 01:43, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Enthusiasm

I've been toning down some of the wording in order to keep the POV as neutral as possible. The article is highly enthusiastic about the subject and would benefit from some softening of the tone a bit. For example:

" Rajinikanth', fondly known as "Super Star Rajini", is the most popular Tamil movie star ever.'"

Bullshit:

I believe the characterizations most and ever require a high bar of justification, including multiple external sources. My goal in making these edits is to keep the article's intent while avoiding having it sound like it was written by the president of his fan club. Tobycat 02:20, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

I've tried to make this as neutral as possible and tried my best not to hurt the sentiments of previous contributor(s). Hope this helps. - srini 19:25, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

"In reality, Rajinikanth has been a simple, honest, well mannered and down-to-earth human being. When his movie Baba (2002) was not received well and financially unsuccessful (even though it ran for over 100 days, it was not upto the box office standards Rajinikanth's movies has set for themselves), Rajni took the unusual step of paying for the losses to the film's distributors."

I think we should refrain from making statements about the (perceived) personality of celebrities. Also, I would like to see a cite for the claim that Rajnikanth returned money to distributors. --Kingsleyj 03:31, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

"Some sources also reported that Rajnikanth had an affair with a girl named Rajni Nair (as they both share a same name), settled in Delhi, working for a Noida based BPO. There is also a talk in Tamil Nadu that he was put into a mental asylum by MGR in 1980 due to some obvious reasons like some love affair of some kind, but real reason is not known."

The above statements does not cite any link. Even if somebody can cite one in the future, I can say it is completely baseless allegation and has no proof. Folks please refrain from making such controversial statements. I am removing the above lines from the article. -- Karthick

Clarity

I completely agree with Tobycat about softening the tone of this article. I also think that somebody ought to clean the whole thing up.

"At the age of 56, his latest release was Chandramukhi (April 2005). It was a remake of the Malayalam blockbuster movie Manichitrathazhu starring superstar Mohanlal (also remade in Kannada as "Aaptamithra"). Chandramukhi has broken all the box office records of all movies ever made in Kollywood. It was made after his previous movie Baba (2002) was a disastrous flop! His next film Sivaji is being directed by S. Shankar."

The paragraph above should be re-written, I believe. Also, I would like to know if we are allowed to add things such as "His next film Sivaji is being directed by S. Shankar."

Expand section on acting career

This article desperately needs lots and lots of input about major events in Rajini's career. We could split the career section, for sake of convenience, into Seventies, Eighties, Nineties and Noughts like in Ajith article. Senior editors are needed to expand the scope of this section. At present, only punch dialogues are being added day-in and day-out! Anwar saadat 01:41, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Politics

The politics section appears to be very POv, consisting of an original analysis of this person's political activities.ßlηguγΣη | Have your say!!! - review me 05:49, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Pruned this article too

I pruned the Ajith article, and another editor told me that the fan editor at Ajith claimed THIS article as his inspiration. So I came here to clean up this one too. I tried to remove all the fancruft. Fans, this is going to be better for him, honest. Readers will tune out anything that reads like a movie column, but they are going to pay attention to a sober, serious encyclopedia article. Zora 15:50, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Don't blank lines, paragraphs, sections and links without discussion. Its indecent and tantamounts to vandalism. Remember, you have alread been cautioned to cause disruptive edit-revert wars in articles that are not your concern. What knowledge of Kollywood do you possess to randomly select and decide what is POV and NPOV here? Anwar saadat 17:35, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Can proof be provided and also use clean citation templates!

The references section looks a mess. I don't see anything but a list of links. No name of link, no when it was accessed. You can use this citation which is most commonly used for web citations:

{{cite web

All Citation Templates
It would be much easier to understand what the links are for if you use citation templates such as the one I have previously mentioned. Multiple changes

I am copyediting this article. Just letting everyone know that I am making multiple short edits, so don't be alarmed to see many edits within a short period. I am also formatting the article with some sections and moving text around. I am also trying to tone down the language to be more "neutral" sounding. ɤіɡʍаɦɤʘʟʟ 23:50, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Cleanup still ongoing. Need some help with references for the politics section. Please look for good references such as newspaper articles etc. Blogs and other private websites are not good enough. ɤіɡʍаɦɤʘʟʟ 01:05, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Punch dialogues

Why do we need this section at all? Seems utterly non-encyclopedic to me. If nobody has a serious objection, I want to remove it. Lotlil 19:36, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

I agree. - KNM Talk 19:49, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
I agree, albeit, partially. The thing is, people all over TN feel that his movies have punch dialogues. So, I suggest removing the section, but making a mention of his punch dialogues (possibly including one or two of them, too - after gaining editor consensus on the talk page) would be worthwhile and informative. aJCfreak yAk 07:48, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
I agree that the section is totally unencyclopedic. Its a 'punch' only to fans and no one else. And while we're at this, pls take a look at Punch dialogue. An entire article! Sarvagnya 09:06, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Just voted in the AfD. Lotlil 13:44, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Ajc, Yes I agree it's a notable part of all his films. But, so are his mannerisms (cigarette flips, sunglass flips, etc.). And, the non-punch but "characteristic dialogues" like jujubee, ippudu choodu, idhu eppadi irukku etc. and "theme stunts" like fighting without landing on ground, fighting without being touched by the goondas etc. What if some over-enthused fanboi wants to make each of these into separate sections ? I'm afraid the article could end up being the standing joke around here. But you do have a point, we should probably summarise all these features into one or two sentences. Lotlil 13:55, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Lotlil, mebbe we could create a separate article for all of those Rajini-specific traits titled Characteristic traits of Rajnikanth's movies or a section in this article where we simply make mention of the various well-known characteristics. After all, reliable, verifiable sources are required for disputed content. If there is general consensus among editors that these facets of Rajni films exist, then we can include them. aJCfreak yAk 06:36, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Hyderabad, Karnataka?

Is there a Hyderabad in Karnataka? Since Hyderabad was a link to a disambiguation page (which should not exist), I corrected it to "Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh", but I don't think that this is correct. It would be great if somebody could check and correct this. WolfgangFaber (talk) 19:19, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Rajinikanth filmography or Rajinikanth (filmography)

Hello. I've begun a discussion at Talk:Rajinikanth (filmography) regarding this. Please join in. aJCfreak yAk 19:19, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

A few concerns

  1. Of late I can't help notice an edit war on the language scripts. I reckon it is fair enough to include all languages that his film career extended and of course Marati, since that was his Mother tongue by birth. We need to get scripts of Telugu and Hindi to be there too.
  2. The images, doesn't seem to be of proper licence. For eg., Image:Moondrumudichu.jpg, Image:Rajni12.JPG, Image:Sriraghavendrarajini.jpg and Image:Padaiyappa.jpg are clearly taken from other websites and probably copyrighted. There is no information onto if the editor has obtained aproval on using them.
Cheers Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 17:53, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
The edit war on language scripts is totally unwarranted. Unless we can provide valid reasoning for the Kannada (and Telugu and Hindi, as suggested) for not being included in the article, they should be there. The images need to be removed and properly sourced, licensed, free images need to be uploaded.
If this is the greatest film star in the Tamil film industry, then how come no one has photos taken of him? Please... Do upload a few completely free images, that we could use in the article. aJCfreak yAk 15:45, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Its best to ask some Telugu and Hindi editors to enter the scripts and put them in alphabetical order. I shall remove the pictures and tag them. Cheers Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 16:01, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Noticed one more anomaly. How come his first film (Kannada) was in 1976 and introduced in Tamil in 1975?? Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 16:15, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
I'm going ahead with editing the anomaly regarding his first film - it couldn't have been in Kannada, unless and until he had a lead role in it, which may mean that his first lead role in a film, was in a Kannada film. However, I have no knowledge of this. If references are provided, we can re-write it in that manner. Till then, we're gonna have to set right the anomaly. aJCfreak yAk 17:03, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

language scripts

i need answers for few questions??

  1. Why languages scripts are added in every actors ,actress page???
  2. What is the rule to be followed?? [ if scripts is really needed ]
  3. Rajni is born 'marati' then why kannada & tamil scripts is added?? why i am asking this question is just bcoz, there is no hindi script in 'aishwarya rai' page although she is bollywood actor acted in 50+ hindi movies & also she is in mumbai with abhi... she is a world famous actor than rajni....

i need answers from only experts and admins.....

newbies plzz stay off... Surya.SK007 (talk) 10:22, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey Surya,
Your concerns are pretty valid and I appreciate that somebody is ready to take this to the talk page rather than editwaring. Rajni is more known as a Tamil actor than a Marati. My North Indian friends were suprised when I once told them so. Hence, given that he is a more prominent as a South Indian actor rather than a Marati born, his name should be in all those scripts. Id est by acting in various languages, he has made himself a star of those language cinemas. This may not be valid for dubbed movies. He is known is Japan too, but to add Japanese here is, as per my opinion, pushing it. I reckon that Aishwarya's entry should include Hindi and other languages she acted in. She is a star of all these languages. PS:I am not an expert, nor an admin. Neither am I a newbie, nevertheless if you need expertise you should ask on a project page or go fish for them.Cheers Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 10:54, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
okie..mine only intention is too add hindi script in aishwarya page..but no one is supporting me in there...that is why i asked those 3 questions to clear my doubts... Surya.SK007 (talk) 14:23, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

You are giving a lone example of aishwarya rai. why not you go and see the wiki pages of sharukh, salman, amir, saif, rekha, hemamalini, sridevi, esha deol, vidya balan etc. The language scripts of their mother tongue and their main career industry is only displayed. If one has to add the language scripts of the all the languages an actor appeared on the screen, then Kamal hasan's wiki page should have atlease eight scripts. so apply common sense and display only their mother tongue and main career industry's. I wish some one add aishwarya's script in Hindi since her main career role is in that industry. without doubt, she was brought up in the film industy by Tamil and she herself told that she can communicate in Tamil. But I don't want to add Tamil script for her coz it's not her career industry.

And finally, to the thread starter, I am not a newbie and ve been around in wiki for about 2 years. User:Yasirian (talk)

I agree with Yasirian, removing kannada script is valid one.
proceed.... Surya.SK007 (talk) 14:07, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Ok, thats a valid point too. I think it is better to take it to a proper discussion and get to an umbrella ruling on what scripts are to be added. As for adding more language scripts is not a big deal. I know atleast one article which has loads of scripts. Do you think the editors there didn't use their common sense? I don't know. Just including the mother tongue and main career industry sounds a good compromise for now. But I would still recommend this to be sorted once and for all. Too many pictures

I feel there are just too many unnecessary pictures in the article. Many of them like "Rajnikant Desperado Style" are absolutely not needed.Seems like someone who considers Rajnikant his god has written the article. Please someone edit this page to a more encyclopedic look.Sugreev2001 (talk) 15:02, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Sugreev, I'm sorry you think the article appears to be biased towards one point of view. I must kindly beg to differ with you because I did edit some portions of the article to give it a more flowing narrative and I attempted to give it a better cadence as well and I see no prejudice whatsoever. I laid out the known staid objective facts with regards to Rajinikanth and his story; perhaps you are not familiar with the story and therefore misunderstand and/or misconstrue certain facts as the fabrications of a raving fanatic, but let me assure you, if you read his recently released biography by Dr. Gayathri Srikanth and are familiar with his history, then you would know that whatever I wrote is accurate and true. But of course, if you enter into this whole affair with an intransigent mindset with regards to Rajinikanth and only wish to make sure to denigrate and obfuscate anything pertaining to Rajinikanth through your veiled facade of attempting to make sure "objectivity" is maintained, then my friend, I cannot really help you. So please, refrain from attempting to imbue the already objective article with your own personal point of view in the guise of protecting the neutrality of the article. And with regards to the images I uploaded, I think it is fine because they do serve a purpose. Again, I'm sensing some sort of inherent prejudice here againist Rajinikanth for some unknown reason whereby you are nitpicking issues which otherwise would not really matter. And let me make it clear, I have not added those pictures for purely aesthetic and/or cosmetic purposes, let me say this: Rajinikanth is not exactly the most known film personality in the world; there are many people who exist out there who want to know more about him, who want to see what makes him what he is and those pictures simply serve to corroborate the same; so please do not give me the "critical commentary" argument. Finally, it is palpably clear that the images I have uploaded will not inhibit and/or diminish the ability of the original copyright holders to profit from their original work. I hope this rectifies the issue at hand and I look forward to continue adding to the page to make it more concise, relevant and informative for the many folks out there who want to know more about the subject. --Ruckie84 (talk) 22:20, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Protection

I have fully protected the page to end the Tamil/Kannada revert war. Please use the talk page to come to a resolution of this issue. If necessary, use dispute resolution to get wider opinions. CIreland (talk) 13:12, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Mr. CIreland! The display of kannada script is not needed here. I have given a number reasons in my above explanation why kannada script is not required. Rajini is a Tamil actor. He is a marathi by birth. These are the only scripts which can be displayed in this wiki page.

1. Kannada superstar Dr. Rajkumar was born and brought up in Tamil Nadu. His wiki page has no Tamil script in it.

If Kannada script should be added for the reason Rajini was born in Karnataka could some kannada fanatic explain why should n't we add Rajkumar's name in Tamil script.

2. Aishwary Rai started her career in Tamil industry and has acted in three tamil movies, all very important movies in her career, which helped her to achieve a star status in Bollywood. She can also speak Tamil language, yet no Tamil script for her in her wiki page.

Kannada fanatics are saying Rajini has acted in Kannada movies so adding his name in Kannada script is valid, then why not Tamil script for Aishwarya? we Tamils think it would be a crap to seek publicity for Tamil language out of her.

Like this, there are numerous examples I can give in wiki regarding the usage of language scripts for famous persons. It's pity that these Kannada people want to associate their language with a person who gives a damn to Kannada. Without doubt, kannada is a great language, but I don't understand why these people need cheap publicity for their language out of a famous Tamil actor? user:Yasiriantalk13:48, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Ok lets cool down! I'm a Tamil myself (if you want you can check out my contributions). Actually you yourself sent me an email of appreciation not very long ago. So please do not brand all as Kannada fanatics. The best way to go about this will be to take the discussion here so that all articles under question can be dealt with. There is a thin line between beeing fair and being a fanatic. Lets try to work for wikipedia and not for our own motives. This article is not something of my interest too. I did some minor edit long time ago on Rajni and it stayed in my watchlist. So people interested in this article can take it to the relevant place, since as Yasirian yourself pointed out, there are several articles under question and best discussed in a common place. Ciao Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 14:23, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
As for as this article, I guess it is safe to start with Tamil script, since he was Christened Rajnikanth by K. Balachander for a Tamil language film[2], then Marati, being his mother tongue at birth followed by other languages. CheersWiki San Roze †αLҝ 22:08, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Personally, I'm sick and tired of being accused of Kannada-ism. I am a Tamilian, have been so all my life. For references, you can chk my userpage at the Tamil wikipedia (Same username - Ajcfreak) I know nothing of Kannada, or of the claims of trying to gain publicity for it. This is Wikipedia, people. I am really fed up of people edit warring. I am not blaming any particular sect of people, as I've seen editors from every part of the world doing this - but ever since I started getting involved with the Sivaji article back in June 2006, I've seen too many edit wars over Rajinikanth-related articles. Frankly, I'm starting to lose my faith in the concept of Wikipedia, which I really thought was awesome. I defer to give an opinion or edit on any Kannada/Tamil-related articles (including Bangalore) until I feel that the Wikipedian community is more conducive to accept straightforward, honest comments and edits, without name-calling and blatant, biased accusations. aJCfreak yAk 16:43, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
JC, there is no need to be fed-up. We shall wait if Yasirian comes with some logical explanation for his stance. Or else, we do have a consensus here that non-Tamil scripts can stay here too. Cheers Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 17:09, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Machans! jcfreak and wikiality, when I said Kannada fanatics, I did not aim at you guys. After all, I appreciate your(->wikiality) good work in maintaining Hogenakkal falls wiki article. Never I thought you guys were kannadigas as well. It's the person with the IP address 59.92.223.61, that I was accusing of being fanatic as he was repeately editing the article to include kannada script. Appavum, ippavum, eppavum, I am against Kannada script in this article coz it is not needed here. I have given numerous reasons why Kannada script is not needed here. So, wikiality please remove the kannada script in this article if you have the rights to do that. I also would like to make it clear that I am not against any language or ethnicity whether it's kannada or hindi. Yasirian (talk) 21:41, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Yasirian, you need to cool down mate! As I said earlier, he has acted in reasonable good number of Kananda movies. So Kannada script can stay here. Let me clarify, it is not mandatory, but alowed if people want to. When you are saying that you are worried about one IP, I'm concerned about another IP that seem to come from Middlesex. We all have our own worries I guess. What is more logic is a person who was born as Shivaji Rao is known to the world as Rajinikanth because of a Tamil movie and Tamil could most likely be the first script to be expressed, followed by other languages he acted and then Marathi. No downgrading Marathi here, but only that he was not known as Shivaji Rao as a Marathi chap. I reserve the right to change my mind if someone shows some logic otherwise, but as of now I can strongly say that there is no need to remove Kannada script. Edit warring on a trivial issue such as this is unwarranted. There are loads of things you can do to this article and expand it. The article looks nothing like what one would expect of a person with such a huge loyal fan following. Look at entries of Shahrukh Khan for example. Shahrukh's career started much after Rajini's, and Rajini was already a top paid actor in Tamil film land and a superstar by then. But, look at the state of the article. Everyone of us have personal preference, but thats for ourselves. Yasirian, I really think that you can contribute much better than this to wikipedia. I hope and pray that you won't let my hopes down. Ciao Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 22:17, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Machan! you cool down! I am least worried about this script issue. I have always made my contributions to wiki in the past and will definitely contribute in the future. No doubt about that. I wanted to remove kannada script based on the things I have seen in wikipedia for similar articles. Now, I want to have my final say here on this issue and no more bull shitting from my side henceforth on this talk page. what irked me was, if a language script has to be added for an actor/actress because he/she was born in some state, then Rajkumar and shilpa shetty, both have to have their names in Tamil script in addition to their mother tongue. Former was born in TN and the later was born in TN and has also acted in Tamil movies. However, none of them seem to have their names in Tamil script in their articles and even if we add, you know what would be the result. So, why not you apply the same logic here machan? Anyways, if you think it has to stay, let it be here. It's not my head ache. Adieus! Yasirian (talk) 22:51, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

You should also be thinking on how much of fan following does the people you mentioned have in TN. Close to zero! How much of fan following does Rajini enjoy in Karnataka. If you blur out the torching of cine halls, then you would see that there are loads. May not be as much as one would find in TN, but defo loads. Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 22:58, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Okay. I guess that a few edit-wars on Rajinikanth-related articles, including certain comments at Talk:Bangalore, irritated me way too much. I'm sorry for blasting out here, it's something I don't usually do. I generally follow the 1 revert rule, and get too worked up by edit-warring, I guess. It also pissed me off when an anon IP came to my talk page and insisted that I go write Rajkumar's name in Tamil script since he was born and brought up in Tamil Nadu. As a Tamilian, that was news to me! Anyways, I'll continue to monitor Rajinikanth-related articles, but don't know how far I'm going to be involved, atleast for the next few days/weeks. aJCfreak yAk 22:59, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

PS: I wrote that up prior to the previous two comments. :) aJCfreak yAk 23:01, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

With the permission of all the stalward editors of this article, I would like to add the telugu script too for his name. This guys has a huge fan following all over the southern states and tamilians do not have exclusive right to be his fans.

Reasons:

  • The opening statement of this article states that he is a telugu super star too.
  • Most of his recent movies have been released simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu.
  • His Telugu versions have been box office hits. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gthorvey (talkcontribs) 01:08, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Although am not a stalwart of anykind, I do back your stance on adding Telugu. I remember when Sivaji was released here, half the crowd was Telugus. My Telugu friends look at Rajini second to Chiru. I guess it is only fair enough that Telugu is there as well. Cheers Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 07:03, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Neither am I a stalwart, but I back the adding of his name in the Telugu script even more than the Kannada script addition - his movies have a special nod towards Telugu language/film industry/culture. If I remember correctly, in Sivaji, he dressed up as yesteryear stars of the Telugu film industry.... instead of the yesteryear stars of Kollywood that he dressed up in, for the Tamil-language version of the film. This is significant. aJCfreak yAk 09:52, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

@Yasirian: Shilpa Shetty is of Tulu Descent. Though born in TN, and having some tamil movies, I agree with Wiki San Roze on the fan base aspect. Adhering to this format, her name doesn't have a tamil script. Also since Tulu doesn't have a stable script as of now[ a different issue altogether], her name in Tulu is written with the kannada script. What's more amusing is that there is no Hindi script entry to her name. Possible Reasons:

  • People consider her to be a global icon after the whole Big Brother Issue
  • People don't bother.
  • We take the fan spirits too high, in what otherwise would just be two or three words of simple wiki syntax.

I vote for 3. Lets concentrate on getting this article some gfdl, or nearly equivalent licensed images. And, try to tone down the text. Incidentally,Dr. Rajkumar's page is already marked as a fan-site-esque article, and has many citation warnings. We wouldn't want that here, do we? Logik (talk) 22:12, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Politics: Incorrect facts

In 2004 Parliamentary elections, Rajinikanth made a statement that "PMK has troubled us too much. So my fans will vote against PMK in the coming elections and make sure that they will lose in all the six constituencies they contest. As PMK is in my friends' camp(in an obvious reference to Karunanidhi, Vaiko etc..) I will leave them just with this punishment. Personally I will vote for BJP alliance, but I don't extend my support to any alliance. People and my fans are free to vote for any party.".

He made it very clear that he is not supporting anybody. I am damn sure about this. I can cite this link "http://www.rediff.com/election/2004/apr/28einter2.htm" which indirectly proves that my argument is true. But I could not find any citations to proves it directly. I will definitely edit when find any citations.

Meanwhile are there anyone to agree with my argument...???

Year of birth

Rajinikanth's year of birth is 1950 and not 1949 as stated in this article. Also the citation ""http://www.rajinifans.com/bio-data.htm" is an invalid link.

I can cite the following links to prove my argument. http://www.rajinikanth.com/bio-data.htm, http://www.rajinifans.com/others/a_z.php, http://www.indiadirect.com/superstar/Bio_Data.html. I am pretty much sure about his year of birth because in the film Baba they show Rajinikanth's original horoscope and according to it his year of birth is 1950.

Regarding Citation

Can sites like IndiaGlitz.com be used as references? For all I know, this seems to be a typical internet based tabloid. A whois search reveals that there are nearly 578 links to this site from wikipedia, without this being a major credible news-source. The problem being that direct info collection would also bring in a host of Weasel_words.This would require a cleanup effort on part of the editors.

Please search for alternate credible news sources ( news papers, Books, etc ), and all locations that wikipedia deems fit for citation. Abhishekupadhya (talk) 15:56, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Apology about the Hogenkal issue

Currently two versions are being argued about. This has seen nearly 5-6 revision undo's already.

The two versions being :

  • He gave a statement regretting his incorrect wordings in the speech. He gave an open statement clarifying his stand to the people of Karnataka state and regretted for not being clear in his speech during the Hogenakkal Water Project hunger strike.
  • He tendered a public apology to all Kannadigas for the controversial statement. He also gave an open statement clarifying his stand to the people of Karnataka state and regretted for not being clear in his speech during the Hogenakkal Water Project hunger strike.

Since this is turning out to be an issue of regionalistic pride, rather than benefiting the article, please converge on a suitable version soonLogik 07:46, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

first statement is true. Please refer the url "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67ZiS_yqULs" for Rajinikanth's clarification. There can be multiple interpretations of a statement given by a person, but it is the person who knows the true nature of the statement.

Also see the Url http://www.behindwoods.com/tamil-movie-news-1/aug-08-01/rajini-balachander-02-08-08.html Even in the Url C21K has given, it is an interpretation by the news writer that Rajinikanth issued an apology. But, as you can see below in the statement from the URL, you can clearly confirm that he has not apologised.

'If I had said clearly on April 4 that only those in Karnataka who indulged in violence against Tamils ought to have been beaten up, the present brouhaha would have been avoided,' Rajnikant said.

I suggest to remove the line from the article till a consensus is reached. 87.65.50.47 (talk) 18:14, 1 November 2008 (UTC) @the_person_above: If it is removed from the article, then it might never be added again.

I suggest that we just include the second line, which is common in both versions. Gives quite the same meaning, without being bluntly offensive or factually incorrect. What say? Logik 17:01, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

This is really funny, and I'm not sure what is the policy of wikipedia regarding the issue. Suppose someone writes a hoax edit on wikipedia, and a reputed news source picks it up [ as they mostly do nowadays, all in the name of legitimate research ]. Does the hoax gain credibility enough to be used as a citation?. Assuming its too insignificant to be verified again.

Case in point, the issue of the ancestory. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abhishekupadhya (talkcontribs) 18:43, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Unsourced commentary, POV, and other puffery

Please do not continue to add unsourced POV, commentary and other puffery to the article. Just the facts as supported by reliable sources. (examples of inappropriate, non-encyclopedic content: "ultimately creating a huge Japanese fan-following " (this would need to be supported by a citation showing that there is a fan following in Japan and the POV/subjective "huge" would need to be replaced by a non-subjective number) "He was given such an unique title" - in this instance the "unique" title (Indian Superstar) is a title given to numerous people, so clearly NOT unique, "Indulging in politics" is another non-encyclpedic analysis that is not allowed.-- The Red Pen of Doom 14:05, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Contains significant amounts of material plagiarized from Wikipedia articles. (Some other books from the same publisher also have this problem). There is no practical way of determining which material came from Wikipedia, and which came from other sources. Further, widespread plagiarism is an indication of poor scholarship. For those reasons, and according to Wikipedia policy, WP:CIRCULAR, I will deleting all citations to the book. Rajnikanth mass popularity, matinee idol status and named influential people in Asia

Hi everyone. It must be known that rajini is indeed the most popular figure in indian media and among fans. His appeal is drawn mainly from his mannerisms and dialogue delivery. Quoting these true/legitimate facts which deserves a mention does not mean its an act done as a promotional fan. EX: A glass is filled with half water. I am seeing the remaining to be filled. Others seeing it is already filled. So one issue has many views. So have the analysistic mind and judge based on that.

Why should I be considered as a fan if I am saying/quoting/editing that is truth/legitimate/correct/proper done meeting all forms of wiki policies. If everyone keep on saying that this article if edited, its becoz he/she is a fan --- then sorry there is no end to wiki editing on all other language articles also, including English. If anyone edits pages who is from Australia, involving italian city then ----> does it reflect he is local guy so he is promoting Italy. Not he is from other place but being a wikipedian he edits. Point is --> If the policies, statement being neutral and other key issues are satisfied then it should be allowed since the article deserves the mentioning.

Keep on pointing on lesser grounds, not accepting reliable/verifiable sources is an act against constructive edit and not fair. Reviewer/rollbackers please do understand this. I respect all in wiki for their truest contribution to wiki including those who raise silly questions.

   Source: http://www.asiantribune.com/news/2009/12/14/sunday-celebrity-rajini-simple-stylish-spiritual-explains-his-uniqueness
           http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/meet-indias-biggest-film-star-2096273.html

Even after proving satisfying all policies, issues others of wiki if anyone denies it or says against --- can users like me who does editing based on truth, honest, humble assume they are haters of person involued --- so they are attacking it personally since they never like them. Please understand it. So Anaylse, review, research, broad-minded, open, true, legitimate; instead of being the reverse!! Hope I clarified myself.

Indian Superstar - Please update

In the Rajinikanth article, second paragraph second line, it is mentioned as "superstar" of Tamil cinema. Google results do not constitute a reliable source. Reviewer: Wizardman Operation Big Bear 05:38, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

I'll review this article shortly. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 05:38, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Here are the issues I found with the article.

  • There are five disambiguation links [7] and there is one deadlink in the references [8] that need to be addressed.
  • The three film images in the article fail our non-free criteria and should be removed/deleted.
  • A lot of the refs are bare urls; for these, titles, access dates, publishers, etc. need to be added. Others may have only one or two of the required fields, and should have more filled in as well.
  • I'm not sure about the reliability of some of these sources. Ref #60, for example, should not be used as blogs are not a reliable source.
  • "He attended the Acharya Patasala for elementary education and had his higher education at the Ramakrishna Mission in Bangalore." should be cited
  • "and also financially supported him for 2 years during his studies" write out single digit numbers (two)
  • The Breakthrough section has no cites, and neither does the first rise to stardom para
  • "Be it the sadistic husband of Sujatha in Avargal or the wolf in sheep's clothing in Moondru Mudichu or the lust-filled village rowdy in Bharathiraja's 16 Vayadhinile, he did with so much perfection." these types of sentences need to be cut from the article; not encyclopedic in the slightest.
  • While the prose isn't too bad, a copyedit for tone and tweaking would be beneficial.

Because of how major some of the issues I found are, I don't think they can could realistically be handled well within the hold period, and as a result I have to fail this article now. Should the issues above be dealt with, it can always be re-nominated at GAN. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 04:51, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi all. I just simply feel that there is so much needless attention on Rajinikanth article. Please only do your truest edits if it sounds really needed and apt. Because every two days I am seeing major major changes in the article and it brings poor quality as the content keep on changing regularly. Rajinikanth's health

I'm sort of surprised that no one has brought this up, but anyone think it's about time we wrote about Rajinikanth's recent health issue? It should be written under the Personal life section using credible, reliable sources in a NPOV. From my understanding, the cause isn't clear, but it is widely reported to be a kidney ailment. A few report this to be due to excessive smoking and drinking, which I'm sure many would find offending. Nonetheless, anyone agree on getting this section included? EelamStyleZ (talk) 19:15, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi. I agree upon this to be included in the personal life section of the article. Its understandable and you were partly correct on his health issues. What I hear was that since suddenly he stopped smoking and other activities (After that really touching & moving chat with KB on a recent grand public function (November) in chennai), it could have lead to really adverse effects. I am not sure on this, but this is very clear and my personal ground sources reveals it broad, to my readings. ---- Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 20:34, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Let me ask you guys directly. When edits are done in a clear way you people object it even after proving the reasons & told many times. If the same edit done without any reference or strong material support, then again you people will bounce on it citing no proper sources, not reliables ones not neutral., blaw blaw blaw. And now since all of these are satisfying you people got struck with an other unusual peculiar reasons to neglect or ignore this important part of this article. what you want us to do here??? or even when we do will you be allowing it??? How bad you people have turned, you decide yourself. Let me again ask you, the denial of magazine content that you guys referring here as improper; even I can start doubting all the major important sources cited here AND all other ENG wiki articles and so would want all of those to be removed as well. Do you think so the magazine or newspaper or any reliable source materials generated by media have NO OTHER WORK or job or role other than printing and publishing it; so that one day it will be included in wiki as a source. So Act genuine and be true and think and act. User:Vensatry first removed it citing the length, then acts somehow to omit this edit and so now coming with technical reasons just to avoid whatever, whomever says., as if he is the only editor here doing things. And for this User:success is backing him up. How bad?.. First realize guys more edit who does NOT matters, unless you get the point first. I am watching you for sometime and impression is not so good. Be correct and approve right things. simply putting brakes or having a speed brake on users for no-less reasons is not good signs. ---- Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 05:43, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
It is clear that you are trying to mislead both of us by saying something which is NOT AT ALL related to the topic. The question is : Should we include magazine or any other medial rankings in the lead?. The answer : No, because it doesn't summarize him in any way. Whether the magazines have no other business or not is none of our or your business. If you are working to promote them, then WP is not the place for you. Read WP:SOAP if you want to know more. Indirectly, you are helping them in marketing their medium. Learn that first instead of making a big fuss about it by deviating from the topic. I see a lot of people adding films here lately, especially Ra.One like every day. Very annoying; we may have to consider removing it and just have the sub-article. Its all very subjective anyway, right? BollyJeff || talk 22:42, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

I don't see what's wrong in adding Ra.One when there is so much hype and speculation created for it. A cameo may not fetch an award, but the film is being dubbed into Tamil and Telugu only because of his appearance. Secret of success Talk to me 17:33, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
You know what is a "Notable filmography"? First of all that's not a Rajini film. Guest and cameo appearances cant be included under this section. --Commander (Ping Me) 19:56, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
That seems to be your personal view. The film is notable because of many reasons, which I have stated above. There is nothing wrong in putting important cameos in the filmography list. Secret of success Talk to me 12:11, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
If you say the film is notable for "the above said reasons", then it's your POV. There are no specific guidelines for "Notable filmography". Its good to include films that featured an actor in the lead role. If you include Ra. One, Peddarayudu definitely deserves a place here. --Commander (Ping Me) 13:32, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
I can get u a hundred RS's which talk about his cameo in Ra.One. Get me some good sources which report anything about his appearence in Peddarayudu. "Its good to include films that featured an actor in the lead role." That is also your personal view. The point is, if we don't have a policy to guide us, we must go by standard rules or get consensus on the topic. Secret of success Talk to me 09:14, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
You must be joking. We cannot say whether a film is notable or not based on the hype that is generated by the internet and media before its release. Coming to Peddarayudu, it's a known fact that only a few online sources exists for south Indian films prior 2000. When I intended to write Deiva Magan, the first south Indian film that was selected by India for Oscar entry, I was struggling a lot for sources. Does that imply Deiva Magan is an unnotable film. Also Kuselan had a grand opening at the time of its release, the third biggest for a Tamil film at that time. But what happened after it's release. For your information, WP states that, "The assumption should also not be made that because a film is likely to be a high-profile release it will be immune to setbacks—there is no "sure thing" production.", which makes clear that WP has lot of restrictions for creation of films before its release. Ra. One is a future film (yet to be released), so it's too amateurish to say a "Future film" as a notable one. Tell me one actor's notable filmography which has a future film. --Commander (Ping Me) 09:47, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
The timing problem will be moot in a few days. For me the real issue is it's a cameo role. How can a film be notable for an actor who is only on screen for a few seconds. That's just silly. BollyJeff || talk 10:35, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

That's my point too. But User:Secret of success is more keen to include that film and when I quote this, he says that as my personal opinion. --Commander (Ping Me) 10:51, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Hey, come on. The cameo is one of the most hyped parts of the film, especially in South India. The film was dubbed into south indian languages mainly because of his cameo. But I agree that it is a future film hence we shall wait till it breaks all records. I'm also certain that all the critical reviews will have a significant mention of his presence in the screen. Secret of success Talk to me 16:39, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Not at all. You have a misconception that big films are good enough to be included in "Notable filmography". Notable films must reflect an actor's career. Cameos and Guest/Special appearances clearly don't do that. It's like mentioning Ko as a notable film for actors like Suriya, Karthi, etc., At this stage you cannot say Ra. One as a notable film for even Shah Rukh Khan. If we take your arguement into account, Anbulla Rajinikanth can also be included in the list, where he played a cameo. Shah Rukh Khan mainy roped in Rajini for attracting the southern audience (Tamil & Telugu) and the film has nothing to do with Rajini's career. Besides, Rajini has played cameos in quite a few Hindi films, out of which many are box-office successes. It makes no sense if we include those here. --Commander (Ping Me) 17:02, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
I'm afraid it is you who has the misconception. If this is a success, there is a good chance Rajini gaining popularity in the North, which was a failed mission through Enthiran. That will certainly be important for his career then. Do you know that Khan stated "If me and Rajini sir come together in this film, the real hero will be him, not me." Coming to Ko, the appearence of Suriya and Karthi did not really get much attention from the public, and you cannot say that it was a cause for the film's success. In Anbulla Rajinikanth, I doubt if it was a cameo he performed. Secret of success Talk to me 17:14, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Rajini is not going to gain further popularity by doing a cameo in a much-hyped film. Earlier Rajini's films such as Andha Kanoon, Gangvaa and Geraftaar (Rajini played a guest role with Amitabh and Kamal) were stupendous success in the north and there is not even much mention about these in the article. If you feel I have a misconception, then bring any experienced editor and say that. Even if the film becomes a hit, it may not be because of Rajini. We cannot say that as a great film of Rajini just because of SRK's statements. He makes such statements to grab the attention of the south Indian audience. Think sensibly! --Commander (Ping Me) 17:32, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Agreed, Ra.One is NOT a notable film for Rajini. Cameo/Guest/Special appearances, regardless of how popular or critically acclaimed they may be, cannot be considered representative of that actor. Besides, Rajini's role in Ra.One won't last more than a couple minutes. He's playing Chitti, which is better known as a character from Enthiran, not Ra.One. Obviously, there will be far more important scenes than just Rajini and considering Rajini as an important part of the film is more of a POV than the consensus here to not list special apperances under Notable Filmography sections. EelamStyleZ (talk) 17:43, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
In what universe is Ra.One a notable film for Rajini? Ridiculous! He will appear in a role that he has played once before and that will last for some few seconds. His appearance in this film is not going to turn the whole film on its head nor is it going to change anything in his career. Big and hyped doesn't mean it is notable for everybody involved in it, you have to consider whether this film marks a significant point in that actor's career. For SRK yes, for Rajini not! SRK is cleverly promoting it down South using Rajini's popularity, that means absolutely nothing, that too is just POV. In 50 years, nobody is going to list Ra.One as one of Rajini's best known or most notable films, unlike Enthiran for instance. Johannes003 (talk) 18:29, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
@Vensatry - "He makes such statements to grab the attention of the south Indian audience." That is called promoting a film. Rajini has a large fan base in the South, that is why it could be a reason for the success of the film. "Even if the film becomes a hit, it may not be because of Rajini." That, I completely oppose. The film, if it gets significant revenue from the south, it is because of Rajini, not because of SRK or Kareena as they (as far as I know), don't have a fan following in the south. In other words, if the film was released without his appearance, it could not have created so much talk in the industry. That is a fact! Secret of success Talk to me 16:08, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
@EelamStyleZ - I don't think it matters for how long the scene or appearance lasts. As I said, Rajini is popular for playing Chitti in Enthiran only in the South. If Ra.One is a BB, the character he plays will be known as "Chitti in Ra.One" to the North Indian audiences, who apparently did not shower praise on Robot. The North Indian audiences are larger compared to the South, hence majority of the viewers will refer to Ra.One when they talk about Chitti. Secret of success Talk to me 16:08, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
@Johannes003 - "SRK is cleverly promoting it down South using Rajini's popularity, that means absolutely nothing, that too is just POV." When you accuse an actor of doing such things without citing an RS, that is what I call POV. In 50 years, Rajini will be popular as playing Chitti in Enthiran to South Indian audiences, while Ra.One will be talked about in the North, and I very much doubt if Rajini's cameo would be blown away with the wind! Secret of success Talk to me 16:08, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Secret of Success, you started off with a long speech which seems to revolve around the same point again and again. Now coming to answer your question, if Ra. One becomes a hit in Tamil/Telugu (because of Rajini as you said), it's still because of the dubbed version and not the direct Hindi version. You must be clear that, we can't say a film is notable mainly because of box-office success or any other hype. One question that was asked by four other editors to you was, "How can a cameo or special appearance be a notable one?" Bring me one experienced editor who backs your claim. Until then yours is a POV. --Commander (Ping Me) 17:12, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Secret of Success, you must realize that whatever anyone is speaking here, on this page, is their POV, since there is nothing like a globally accepted standard for notability of cameos, or something like that. And therefore, nothing good comes out of taking this discussion tangentially to discuss specific user POVs. Period.
Coming to the issue at hand, Honestly speaking, this is still premature, in the sense that the movie has not yet been released yet, and we do not know whether the movie is a success or not. Again, it all comes to what you define "notable filmography" as: It may be defined as per what Secret of success is hinting at: by looking around the hype a film creates. That, is a perfectly fine classification IMO. Having said that, doing so will probably leave out of perspective, some of the other important, but probably less documented movies, maybe something like Peddarayudu.
I'm not an expert at films, so I presume that there are no set guidelines for what is defined as "Notable filmography". The way forward as I see it, can be one of three options:
  • Define standards for what we can call "Notable filmography", and then follow it.
  • Cut out all the red tape, and remove the "Notable filmography" section altogether, and put only a link to the full filmography.
  • Keep it status quo and debate each case as it comes along, as was being done above.
This is my analysis of the situation, do let me know if I am mistaken somewhere. Thanks, Lynch7 17:54, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
User:MikeLynch, I think you're on point. EelamStyleZ (talk) 22:42, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Well I'm sorry, User:Secret of Success, that you don't think the length of the appearance/scene matters, but it does. That is part of the generally-agreed-upon definition of a notable filmography section. Otherwise, we wouldn't have such a section. We might as well arbitrarily choose our favourite films and list it in the biography, or just have the entire filmography list in the biography. What does Enthiran's success in North India have to do with his appearance in Ra.One? Obviously, Enthiran must have made a significant impact in North India in order for Shahrukh Khan to even consider having Rajinikanth reprise his role as Chitti in Ra.One. It doesn't matter what North Indians think of Chitti and what film it is from. Ra.One, in the most simplest terms ever, is not a notable film for Rajinikanth. No where in the promotions do you see anything like "Rajinikanth's Ra.One" or "Ra.One starring Rajinikanth". It's always referred to as Shahrukh Khan's film, because he is the most important person in the film (producer and lead actor). It's these obvious reasons that you must consider when choosing films for notable filmography. Your reasons for Ra.One being a notable film for Rajinikanth don't make any sense. If Ra.One were to be a notable film for Rajinikanth, then we might as well consider throwing in Kuselan, Anbulla Rajinikanth, Bulandi and all other films where he played much longer guest roles. It isn't even wise to continue this argument anyway, because clearly everyone else here agrees that Ra.One shouldn't be in the 'Notable filmography' section. Hope this is clear. EelamStyleZ (talk) 20:24, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

@Vensatry, I think you're totally out of your mind saying that "You must be clear that, we can't say a film is notable mainly because of box-office success or any other hype." You remember Dasavathaaram?? A critical failure and a commercial success, but you've decided that its notable in the Talk:Kamal Haasan page. Answering the question "How can a cameo or special appearance be a notable one", a cameo or special appearance isn't usually notable in India because they are rarely given attention by the mainstream media. But this one, its an exception because the media have had it in the top of their charts for a significant period of time. And I don't think I require another editor to support me, because a reasoning session is much better than a plain voting session. Lynch7 has accepted that it is fine to define notability using the criterion on whether it is a hot topic for the media (hype and speculation). Secret of success Talk to me 06:41, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
@EelamStyleZ, SRK has been Rajini's fan/friend/contact for a long time before the release of Enthiran. If you would look at this, you can see that they know each other personally despite competition for their films. That contradicts the statement of yours "Obviously, Enthiran must have made a significant impact in North India in order for Shahrukh Khan to even consider having Rajinikanth reprise his role as Chitti in Ra.One." If they knew each other well before Robot's release, then that would be a reason why such a cameo was planned. "No where in the promotions do you see anything like "Rajinikanth's Ra.One" or "Ra.One starring Rajinikanth"." Does an actor have to be the hero if a film in which he acted is notable for him? If that is the case, you also don't see "Kareena's Ra.One" or "Arjun Rampal's Ra.One" etc. It is SRK and King Khan alone who is credited whenever the film is mentioned. Secret of success Talk to me 06:41, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
First of all, Ra. One is a SRK film and not a Rajinikanth film. Do you think Ra. One will become a landmark film in his career? I said Dasavathaaram as a notable film mainly because of the ten roles and huge budget. Otherwise, I won't say that as a notable film of Kamal and I also don't have any problems if you remove that from Kamal's page. I asked you to bring another editor not to support you or myself, but I needed different opinions on this discussion. As MikeLynch told, each and everyone has their own opinion, it's perfectly fine in the other four editors' (Myself, EElamstyleZ, Johannes and Bollyjeff) side also. You cannot add Ra. One since four users are against adding that film. You need consensus to add that. --Commander (Ping Me) 08:16, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Yes, if he is reprising the unique role he played in his biggest success in a film with someone like SRK be it a cameo or a special role, it certainly is a landmark. Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra are also playing guest roles in the film. But is there any talk about it in town?? Rajini's cameo is one of the biggest in the decade, both in terms of significance and recognition. Secret of success Talk to me 08:33, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, we know that SRK has been long associated with Rajinikanth, but why else would SRK specifically want him to reprise his role as Chitti? If Chitti wasn't popular in North India, he wouldn't bother asking Rajinikanth to play Chitti; he could have made him do a cameo role as himself or some other role. Also, why would he ask Rajinikanth to play a guest role in Ra.One, which he hasn't done before? Thus, it's clearly not only because of his admiration for Rajinikanth. It doesn't contradict my statement; again you're arbitrarily choosing reasons to back up your desire to have Ra.One in the Notable filmgraphy section. And yeah, it's a notable film for Rampal and Kapoor because play major roles in the film and in comparison to previous roles they have played, their roles in Ra.One stand out. This is not the case for Rajinikanth. Just because the fact that he's playing a guest role in Ra.One is being heavily reported in the media and used as a reason to promote the film in South India, doesn't mean the film becomes notable in Rajinikanth's career. Kuselan was hugely reported as a "Rajinikanth-starrer" but at the end we found out that it was just a cameo appearance (at most, a supporting role), so would you agree on having that on the Notable filmography table as well? His supporting role in the American film Bloodstone was a flop outside India, but hugely popular within India. Why don't we include that in there too? If we were to list all of Rajinikanth's roles from most notable to least notable, his role in Ra.One would probably fall near the end, although not last, while arguably, his role in Enthiran would be at the top (yes, there's a difference between his roles in Ra.One and Enthiran). How could you say Chitti will be known as a Ra.One character? That is complete nonsense. Enthiran made a significant global impact, so how could it not make even the slightest impact in North India?. Contrary to your understanding of it, Enthiran 's success in North India was not bad. If anything, Ra.One 's success in South India would probably be nearly the same as Enthiran's success in North India. EelamStyleZ (talk) 15:24, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Anyway, let me make you clear on the meaning of Notable filmography. The reason why we have such a section is to list an actor's most popular and most critically acclaimed roles that are representative to their career and have made a significant impact in shaping their popularity. For the role of Chitti, Enthiran did more than enough in popularizing Rajinikanth, not only across India, but also around the world. Rajinikanth is playing Chitti in Ra.One as a guest appearance, meaning it is there only to please viewers and expand the film's profile by including another high profile artist in it. It is an obvious fact that Rajinikanth won't be critically acclaimed for his role in Ra.One (i.e. he isn't going to be nominated for any award). I don't know what you think of Chitti and Enthiran, but Chitti fully applies to Enthiran and not Ra.One. This is how every other viewer will see Chitti as well. Again, it's these simple reasons that do not make Ra.One pass as a notable filmography for Rajinikanth. I really don't see why it's so difficult for you to understand this. EelamStyleZ (talk) 15:39, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Again, Notable should not come to mean just "critically acclaimed" or "popular". If any movie was in a lot of news for being a flop, then it should be included (I'm not a movie fan, but I recall one of Rajini's 2000s movie like that). About Ra.One, its not a main role. Period. Guest appearances cannot be considered in the same league as lead/supporting appearances. Lynch7 15:47, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
I can't believe how long this has gone on. EElamstyleZ, Johannes, Bollyjeff, Vensatry, Lynch7 against inclusion; SecretofSuccess for. The end, get over it. BollyJeff || talk 16:49, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Pardon me but I just saw another comment up there by Secret of Success about Ra.One being dubbed in Tamil and Telugu only because of Rajinikanth. Totally untrue. Get your facts straight. Updation

Since Ra.One is released, can we write more about Rajini's cameo in the "career" section. Also there is a separate section called "Health" under which the recent problems concerning his health is mentioned. I don't think a separate section is needed for that, it can be clubbed into some of the existing sections. --Commander (Ping Me) 06:32, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

I don't think there's anything more to say about Rajini's appearance in Ra.One. If you've seen the film (or just Rajini's scene from the film which can be found on YouTube), you'll see that it literally lasts a couple of minutes and not very informative (in fact, I believe the actor in that scene was not Rajini himself - it was a body double while the head was graphically morphed to be Rajini's and the voice over was done by Rajini himself). As for the health section, no problem in having such a section. It's found in a lot of biographical pages where the subject's health was a concern. Also, Rajinikanth's health scare this year was pretty notable. EelamStyleZ (talk) 20:13, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
Rajini's cameo in the film drew much attention and there is nothing wrong in briefing about his role in a couple of lines. We cannot go by rumours like "The man who appeared is not Rajini" as you say, without reliable sources. The Health issue is not notable as of now as that did not have any serious impact after the treatment. I feel there is no need to give much weightage to the "Health". --Commander (Ping Me) 07:33, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
Yeah I know we can't put "the man who appeared is not Rajini", I was just giving my opinion there. But we've already added a line about Rajini making a cameo in Ra.One. What more is there to say about it? Like most of us (including you) said in the previous debate above, a cameo is a cameo and there is not much notable about it. Also, just because notability declines with the advance of time, doesn't mean it loses its spot on Wikipedia. That's like saying Badsha and Padayappa are no longer notable films! The links we've used to cite the health info work fine at the moment, and if they become dead links, I'm 99% sure there will always be another source to replace it with. EelamStyleZ (talk) 13:07, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
I never said that, "notability declines over a period of time". This health scare may not have a great impact in Rajini's life, unlike Amitabh's injury while filming Coolie or MGR's health scare just before his death. Anyway, now the section is included under "Bioraphy" and doesn't look like giving more weightage. Commander (Ping me) 08:56, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

D.O.B

Recently, Lata Rajinikanth said in a TV channel that her husband turned 62 on 12-Dec-2011, which means he is 1949 born. But in the main article page, his year of birth is mentioned as 1950. I can still provide some reliable sources where his Y.O.B would be mentioned as 1949. Here you go:

  • IndiaToday - [9]
  • Times of India - [10]. The other TOI article here says that he was born on 1949,
  • The India Daily - [11].

His year of birth needs to be changed to 1949. Thank You. Hari7478 (talk) 07:03, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

Removal of content

Users User:Keyan20 and User:Yjenith have reverted my edits. I have explained the reason to Keyan20 on his talkpage. The stuff added by User:Yjenith in the "Humanitarian" section seems totally irrelevant and is extremely small. Besides that had got nothing to deal with any kind of activities pertaining to humanity rather than explaining about why Rajini has not endorsed any product. I asked them to start a discussion in the talk which they failed to do. Hence, I'm reverting their edits. Commander (Ping me) 09:02, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Regarding Humanitarian section, it just started about the actor. It will be a vandalism if we assume it is irrelevant only because of small start. It talks about his activities in social contribuion. That's why he was approached to promote malnutrition also in India. Also it will be added with more references of his social in futue. I strongly recommend to include this section--Jenith (talk) 09:33, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Would suggest retaining the information maybe under some other subsection. (But am not finding any good place for keeping this.) -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 11:04, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
That's the problem. That would not fit into any other section. Besides, promoting malnutrition isn't a great thing and I don't see any special reason for including that. Above all, this is a GA and he added those without consulting any of the other editors who are involved in this article. Commander (Ping me) 11:15, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Right! Current trivial events on such good lengthy article isnt very much necessary. But it can be included under "Health scare and recent work: 2011–present" section once the Aamir-Rajni ad starts telecasting and if it gets good response. -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 11:53, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Do you think that Polio vaccine or nutrition deficiency awareness are not important to any nation? India comes now almost polio free nation. His participation was important and should be recorded on this. It was the huge reach to all villages where people were not aware on Polio that time. Then, rumor was like his children also were afftected that's why he did that ad. Not only this social activity. We have other references like his contribution to nation to mention. I don't think if we have proper valid info no need to consult. Also any article should not be in one group of hands, if good suggestion, tweaking, and improvement, all are ready to accept. I again stand on that this information should be added, if we have problem for the section name, I suggest Philanthropy.--Jenith (talk) 12:09, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
See the problem is whether we should keep the stuff or not. I never said polio vaccine or nutrition awareness are not important. You must explain in what way it adds significance to this article. The "Aamir Khan" thing that you added was a speculation and will not add any value to the article as of now. It can be worth mentioning only if it has had a great impact in the past. Above all the section seems too small for a GA. Even One/two line paras are discouraged in GAs. Commander (Ping me) 13:46, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
When the social criteria is important, promoting them by the people like celebrities also is important. It does vital role to make awareness among public. I expect the polio vaccine promotion done by him should be added, because it was the great response that time (1980s). As we dont have published web sources on that year, I cited those two reliable references (IBNLive, Times of India) which clearly told about the actor polio vaccine promotion contribution in 1980s. I will add more references if need. It should be done as future placeholder and enhancement of the article though it is small as of now. We cannot expect every section on start should have more lines. We need to see the value add to the article.--Jenith (talk) 14:10, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
This is a GA article, and adding a section with trivial content only kicks the quality away instead of actually increasing the significance of the subject. I suggest that you go by Animesh and Commander's suggestions. And Keyan20's opinion is yet to be posted here. No big deal, really! Thanks. X.One SOS 16:16, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Comment to Jenith Alright! if you want to expand the article you can create 'n' number of one-line sections and go on and on. Finally someone will ask for reassessment and the article wil get delisted. Commander (Ping me) 16:45, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
We cannot expect every section on start should have more lines. We need to see the value add to the article. This statement is meaningless! This isn't a new article to make comments like that. This is a GA and every additions have to be made carefully. If you are not sure of how to expand instantaneously, develop that in the sandbox and then make that into the article. Commander (Ping me) 16:49, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

As my opinion the "humanitarian" work can be applied as per the views of all users discussed here and I am good to go to either keep it nor to exclude it. But on the other part in "Popularity" section if I am right; On making some correction to the entire article User:Vensatry came up by removing that last section completely as he did here --> [[12]]. I felt citing a week source he might have removed and so I retrieved it back with more reliable reference. Thats why I question something similar to what Vensatry is arguing "if you want to expand the article you can create 'n' number of one-line sections and go on and on". I also raise the same in other way that "You can improve the article n times but all of a sudden do not remove some major event or sections in the article citing some reasons like WP:OR. As I already told, on "Featured" and "Good" article if something is wrong wait for a while and analyze the cause for it. Ex: A good or featured article over time, one or two sources like a website link may go down or lost; so because of this immediately removing the content is not good. We can search and maximum try to recover it and only when suitable action cant be completed in some time, then removing it makes a valid call. Also on the explanation given to me by Vensatry saying "First of all the video has got nothing to do with superstar. It only features himself alongside "Thavakalai" (Little superstar). It adds more significance to the little superstar (Thavakalai) rather than Rajini." is like finding a reason to deliberately skip which cannot be accepted. I told many times I am not adding anything new on this and I am only trying to retrieving it back; because it was removed suddenly without discussion. ---- Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 04:14, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

I stand with Vensatry point to skip that viral video (Thavakalai). It is concrete and valid suggestion as it is nothing to do with the lead content of the article. We can add this info in Thavakalai artcile sure. Also from starting itself, I wondered why it was in popular section, now it is nailed.
Coming to my edit, I wish not to miss this major contribution in his early career, which was huge success also. I suggest including it in some other section, if we feel beacuse of few lines section, somebody will revoke the GA credit (is any policy clause like that? please share it). --Terminator (talk) 08:17, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Comment to Keyan20 Please read WP:OR and please try to abide by the policies and guidelines. The suggestion to remove that part was given by User:Redtigerxyz. Even I felt that was more of like an OR.
Comment to Jentith I do understand the importance of his part in the polio eradication campaign. Long back there was a separate section called "Philanthropy" but later it was removed I don't know why. Just wait for sometime so that we can create a separate section called "Humanitarian Work" or something like that with more content and add that back into the article if other users agree. I said if we do unnecessary changes without having the GA guidelines in mind, over a period of time the article may lose it's status. Commander (Ping me) 08:47, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
I still feel even after providing the most trusted and complete sources as reference, pointing a reason (to me) indicates to omit the content and neglect it. Since it is removed and bringing questions like "How this was there at first?" is nothing but further action to skip it. I wish instead of removing it first, a discussion would have had a different impact and that's the right way I feel especially for "featured" and "good" articles. No matter whether User:Redtigerxyz has suggested it or not, it is an action done to skip, neglect the fact and to go against reliable sources. Let me again ask, "If there was no reliable resource available for it, then again all would have called simply to avoid it by removing". And when you really come up with source, questions like these arises. I do not know what an average editor will do more than this. Also remember citing this video has nothing to do with superstar is not correct. You do not know the reach it had and along with thavakalai SS also had a huge popularity. Please review it in more detail. ---- Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 04:08, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

rajini's nativity

It is well known that Rajinikanth was born and raised in Krishnagiri, Tamilnadu. However, both his parents are from Tamilnadu. Then why can't either of the scripts (Kannada language and Marathi language be allowed in his article? Kailash29792 (talk) 11:56, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

The Marathi script is there under the "Early life" section. See here for the ongoing dispute about scripts and if possible feel free to comment there. Commander (Ping me) 12:09, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Special website (Popularity)

I need reason for constantly removing the special website ('www.allaboutrajni.com') created to honoring the actor with the good source like IBNLive --Terminator (talk) 09:13, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not a newspaper and timely news subjects not suitable for it. Besides, the website is not an official one of Rajini and you keep adding that to the EL section. Doing so will be considered as link spam. There are many websites which give up to date information about Rajini and what if someone wants to include those sites as well. Vensatry (Ping me) 09:49, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, this is not a place to include trivia. Rajini is hugely popular, but that doesn't mean we should include every fansite. Lynch7 10:05, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

I removed it from EL. I agreed. But as you told I did not keep adding that. My question is about reverting it in Popularity section --Terminator (talk) 11:06, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Already explained by me and MikeLynch. Vensatry (Ping me) 11:18, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Even in popularity section, I don't think this is needed. Rajini's popularity is much much more than can be given by a website. Indeed, the website falls under another of those "Rajinikanth Jokes" things. Lynch7 11:34, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

  • Is it known if Rajini's family was a first-generation immigrant to Bangalore?
  • Rajkumar's autograph seems WP:UNDUE.
  • Balachander gave Rajinikanth a relatively small role as an abusive husband of Srividya: Who is Srividya in this context? Is she the protagonist or a minor character? Is Srividya the actress or the character is also unclear. Probably Srividya's name can be removed in this context and replaced with "the female protagonist".
  • More info about Chilakamma Cheppindi, the first movie when he was in the lead. What did the reviews say? Commercial failure or success?
  • The sentence with Apoorva Raagangal's controversial nature and awards can be curtailed possibly; as Rajini plays a minor role.
  • Muthuraman first experimented with him in a positive role: Was Chilakamma Cheppindi not a positive role, though he was the protagonist? Anti-hero?
  • Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri: reword to state explicitly that this is a Tamil movie; we said he moved to a Telugu film
  • as a failed lover in the first half of the film and a protagonist in the second half: protagonist is the leading character. How can he be a protagonist if he features as a leading character in only half the film? Reword

@Kailash29792, Yes, Rajinikanth is the common name but also his stage name. See Eminem, Drake (musician), 50 Cent, their real names are only used. - SUN EYE 1 04:58, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
I think that's why there is Latha Rajinikanth and Soundarya Rajinikanth, neither having their last name as Rao or Gaekwad. Kailash29792 (talk) 05:01, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
@Kailash29792 Soundarya's original name is Shaku Bai Rao Gaikwad- SUN EYE 1 05:47, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
@Suneye1: That's a fair point. We're not sure if he has ever changed his name. However, this petition refers to his wife as Latha Rajinikanth (it also refers to him as Rajinikanth). His daughters, too, use 'R' as the initials—Aishwarya R. Dhanush and Soundarya used to be Soundarya R. Ashwin. Vensatry (talk) 06:46, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
@Vensatry, Rajinikanth himself says "Actually my name is Shivaji Rao Gaekwad" in this video during his trip with Bear Grylls. - SUN EYE 1 07:50, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
@Suneye1: I'm not disputing that – a similar argument can be made for Kamal Haasan as well. In any case, we need multiple reliable third-party sources that claim his name change. Vensatry (talk) 15:12, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
It's likely that it's Rajinikanth as per his Aadhaar. Vensatry (talk) 15:19, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
@Vensatry, that is a COVID-19 e-pass, anyone can use whatever name they wanted. Per WP:BLPPRIVACY, full names and dates of birth can be backed by "sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object to the details being made public". I have no problem if he is Rajinikanth or SRG, but if we can't find sources for his name change, shouldn't SRG be used? - SUN EYE 1 15:31, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

I'm aware that it's an e-pass; I'm talking about the ID proof mentioned over there. I'm not against the usage of original/birth name in the lead (infact, it should be mentioned), but the phrase "known professionally as Rajinikanth" sounds rather inaccurate as he's been mostly referred to as Rajinikanth everywhere. As for WP:BLPPRIVACY, I don't get your point. Can you elaborate what you're trying to convey? Vensatry (talk) 16:08, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

@Vensatry,The BLPPRIVACY is about the video I mentioned earlier, It is a source linked to the subject so I believe it could back his real name. The phrase "known professionally as" is used for other artists even though they are not very much known by their real name; see Eminem, 50 Cent.- SUN EYE 1 16:22, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
The guideline is a bit irrelevant to the discussion as nobody is against the usage of his birth (full) name in the lead. About the video, of course, he says his name IS SRG but if you look at the context carefully, he goes on to add that later KB changed his name. To cite another example, watch from around the 6:25 mark in this video, where he says he's never received a Filmfare Award, but the fact is that he received one in 1984 for Nallavanukku Nallavan. Vensatry (talk) 05:37, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
@Vensatry, I was preferring the older version. There are sources which says his name was "was rechristened as Rajinikanth by legendary director K Balachander"[17]. It is confusing here, I can't find multiple sources which says that he had changed his name or if Rajinikanth is just a stage name. At the same time, it's obvious that he prefers himself as Rajinikanth instead of SRG, so the current version is okay. I'll start a discussion if any new information about this comes up. Thanks - SUN EYE 1 07:07, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
@Suneye1: Sure. Thanks for opening up the discussion. Vensatry (talk) 07:22, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Under the philanthropy section, these two events should be added after the line " In 2011, Rajinikanth announced his support for the anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare and offered his commercial wedding venue, the Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam, in Chennai free of cost for the India Against Corruption members to hold their fast"

In the last two decades, Rajinikanth has helped several people by lending monetary help for education, medical and other expenses.
