Could someone repair the vandalism? The article says he was born in 'gayland usa, hommo', and there's some more stuff farther down. At least the people who deface articles like this should learn to write correctly - Lurker

Hi this is to warn the Wikipedia community that this page like many others have come to the attention of propagandists from Isreal who trawl wikipedia trying to change history. This page was reverted by one of their ilk.
- There is a gang at wikipedia that has gone about changing several pages to suit the Zionist concept of history, we appeal to all netutral historians to monitor this page and defend it against these vandals

- Articles can have both Zionist and anti-Zionist contradicting viewpoints portrayed as such. These articles should actually be non-Zionist, neither leaning towards the Zionist nor the anti-Zionist view. That is the point of neutral point of view. Instead of erasing Zionist viewpoints, you should instead balance them equally with anti-Zionist viewpoints where they disagree. Anti-Zionism is no more neutral than Zionism, because they are both weighted towards a viewpoint that is not neutral. I suggest that the article be edited to mention all the relevant viewpoints, and mention how they conflict, without taking a side or writing it in such a way as to suggest the reader take a particular side, and without suggesting that the user must necessarily take a side in the conflict at all. This an encyclopedia, not a political pamphlet. (This post was selectively cross-posted where this dispute has been seen.) - Gilgamesh 02:55, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Two guys gidonb and jayjg are just deleting relevent stuff associated with Rabin murder, Yigal Amir, Kempler video, Barry Chamish and now Shimon Peres. This is the edit that I put in. Peres is currently being sued for 250,000 sheckels ($50,000) by David Rutstein for slander. Mr. Rutstein operates the web site www.shimonperes.net. In an ironic manner, the website run by Mr. Rutstein states in a big bold headline that Shimon Peres ordered the murder of Yitzhak Rabin. This lawsuit and case will probably have great impact on Mr. Peres' future and his historical standing. This is statement is fact. It may have relevence as to why Shimon Peres, age 82, is still in politics and is very closely alligned to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Mr. Peres' political party wants to call early elections while Peres wants to keep Sharon in power. Maybe it is related. I don't know. But I do know that gidonb is real serious in deleting this paragraph. I have no idea as to what gidonb's goals are but those goals are not related to the factual presentation of Shimon Peres' life story. Sorry but the item is not good enough to be included for several reasons:
- Arutz 7 is not a very reliable news source as they hardly verify the press relases that people send in. This is also the case with rotter.net. At the same time, these "alternative" Israeli news sources do provide some scoops every now and then, so they do have their functions. Your personal press relase should be verified by one of such politically diverse but very professional Israeli news services as Kol Israel, IBA, Arutz 2 News, Arutz 10 News, Maariv, Yediot, Itim, Ha'ir, Galei Tzahal or Haaretz to carry some weight. The alternative news sources are just not good enough.
- This is not enough. Per our policies the articles do not deal with minor issues in the news, and a slander case of $50.000 is not a big deal. It is hardly a major item.
- Further, if and when filed it may get rejected immediately and since you admittedly submitted the civil law suit yourself, it constitutes of artificial news creation and original research.
- Shimon Peres (perhaps) said you should be examined, not that anything is wrong with you. Since you also accused me of being involved in the murder of an Israeli prime minister and push conspiracy theories about so many cases of natural and unnatural deaths, reverting articles constantly and updating us about your political activities endlessly, he may have a point.
Instead of concieving this as yet another conspiracy, you may ask yourself whether you fully comprehend and act upon the philosophy and purposes of Wikipedia when so many Wikipedians with so diverse POVs on other topics as Jayjg, me and many, many others keep undoing your POV pushing. Remember, accusing others through wild constructs is easy, examining your own ways and how to improve them is the hard way. gidonb 11:10, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
the entire lawsuit is online at http://rotter.net/cgi-bin/forum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&forum=gil&om=5614&omm=468&viewmode= which of course in hebrew.. Since the court case was filed in Israel... Actually there are three, four major english language newspapers out there and one them is israelnationalnews.com (a7). If you go to the Avodah political party newspaper (Shimon's Political party)...on their english site their internet newspaper pulls english articles from israelnationalnews.com (a7).. as well the hebrew article at a7.org about the lawsuit went to the Avodah political party newspaper among other places.. Gidonb, this is news, and I am refuting your ridiculous arguments. It is obvious that you have an agenda. But this is an encyclopia. Non Israeli readers of this argument should realize that Israeli is a small country with 5 million Jews, a few million Arabs and other non-Jews. Of the 5 million Jews 40% are religous or anti-government... so in essence the prefered class is maybe 3 million people. Smaller than many American cities. Wierd stuff happens in very small countries with political and demographic controversies. I am not sure why gidonb is acting as a censor but it is wierd. Actually Shimon Peres said in his political party newspaper that David Rutstein is a "syko" that should be institionalized"... His newspaper knew I would sue. Obviously his political party wants to get rid of him. Gidonb, why are working hard to censor stuff that Shimon's political party is not censoring. If you call me on the phone I will tell you why. I actually know the reason. Seriously, this thing is breaking news and all your deletes of Kempler video, etc are just a waste of time..unless of course it is your jobKempler video 11:10, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
Hey Gidon, Barry and myself are becoming media stars here in Israel, Wow.... check out Reuters artticle that just hit the wires services...this is just the beginnning..Shimon will not win the primary on the 9th..His political party newspaper put three articles on me, (just do a search with my name spelled in hebrew) in their internet newspaper already.. The party wants him to loose. And I intend to help them. If Shimon sneaks by the primary he will get creamed in the general election. We are building serious momentum Kempler video 11:10, 1 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Origin and Nationality
He was born in 1923 in Belorussia and immigrated with his family in 1934. Adding that to the page.
I notice that more complete explanation of Peres' origins used to be on the page:
==
Shimon Peres was born in Wieniawa, Poland (now Vishniev in Belarus). As a child he moved to Tel Aviv in the British Mandate of Palestine with his family in 1934. He was educated in the Geula School in Tel Aviv and the agricultural school of Ben Shemen.
==
Unless it is factually inaccurate, it should be put back. Having an 80+ year old man identified solely as Israeli without any further explanation is rather incredulous.
Vice Premier Peres?
When did Shimon Peres get appointed Vice Premier/Deputy Prime Minister of Israel? Ehud Olmert is the Vice Premier/Deputy Prime Minister (currently Acting PM) of Israel. Are there 2 DPM's? 1st DPM (Olmert) & a 2nd DPM (Peres)? GoodDay 20:34, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
== Alleged Homosexuality
Whoever wrote "he is rumored to be gay" needs to substantiate his statement with a source.
Shimon Peres is not a member of Kadima
he is indeed a great supporter of Ariel Ahron and his new party, but, how strange it would be sound, he is still a member of the Labor Party (Haavoda), now it goes into a legally problem and also turn to discussions in israel.
Ho, please fprgive me abput my poor english, i promise to try to getting better
- I understand your English very well. Peres resigned from the Knesset three days ago, on January 17, 2006. He was a member of the Labor-Meimad-Am Ehad faction. He has been replaced by the Labor MK Weizman Shiry. He may be on the Kadima list for next elections, if this is legally feasible. There are some restrictions on quitting one party and joining another immediately; this is why he resigned from the Knesset. Regards, gidonb 14:45, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Maybe now he is
The official Kadima list for the election, published a day or two ago, has Peres on it (as Number 2.) If he is now officially a candidate of Kadima for the Knesset, doesn't that mean he is now a member of that party? This will affect not just this article but a couple of others I have noticed, all of which hedge on whether Peres is a "member," such as saying he is a "supporter of Sharon and Olmert but not a member" or "not officially a member." Isn't he now, officially, a member? I am not sure, exactly, how one becomes a member or non-member of a party in Israel. 6SJ7 16:58, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- Technically, Peres is a member of Kadima. You are invited to make all the necessary changes. Please keep in mind however that much of the data on Peres is historical data and so far he was prime minister and minister on behalf of Israeli Labor (in different alliences) and MP of Labor and Rafi. As of now, Kadima should refer only to his current personal alliance. Peres has resigned the Knesset in order to be able to run for the next one representing Kadima. Thank you for offering to make the changes! gidonb 17:08, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Shimon Peres a fighter?
Did Shimon Peres actually participate at any time as a combat soldier during the 1947-1949 Arab-Israeli War? I'm just wondering if he did.
No. Peres never participated as a combat soldier. However, he was instrumental is procuring arms for Israel in 1948/1949 through diplomatic channels in Europe.
Thank you very much for answering my question. I appreciate it.
Intro
I reorganized the intro because it had become sort of a jumble of current and past events, and the fact that he is a former Prime Minsister was getting pushed further and further down. Therefore, I created a one-sentence lead paragraph that makes clear that he is a former PM and current Cabinet member, then a second paragraph dealing with his party status and a third stating when he served as PM and other stuff. As with all current Israeli politicians, other parts of the article also need to be rewritten/edited now that dust has settled from the creation of Kadima, the illness of Sharon and emergence of Olmert, and finally the elections and installation of a Cabinet on May 4. I have edited the intros (and some in the article bodies) for Tzipi Livni and Amir Peretz (and now the intro from Peres) but there are still a lot of Israeli-politics articles that need attention now. 6SJ7 17:11, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Emigration to Israel
I have made a brief amendment to the intro, where it formerly stated that Peres moved to Israel in 1934. This would have been miraculous, as the state of Israel did not come into existence until 1948! JulesVerne 17:06, 24 January 2006 (GMT)
- Nobody said that he moved to the State of Israel. Land of Israel has been existed for at least 3000 years. --unpluggged 15:34, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
GA Review
Quickie review summary now as I don't have much time, but Mr. Peres has been waiting for his turn for quite a bit:
- It is reasonably well written.
- a (prose): b (MoS):
- It is factually accurate and verifiable.
- a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
- It is broad in its coverage.
- a (major aspects): b (focused):
- It follows the neutral point of view policy.
- a (fair representation): b (all significant views):
- It is stable.
- It contains images, where possible, to illustrate the topic.
- a (tagged and captioned): b lack of images (does not in itself exclude GA): c (non-free images have fair use rationales):
- Overall:
- a Pass/Fail:
Overall, the biggest problem with the article is that although it contains a lot of information, it is a nightmare to read due to the lack of sensible structuring (huge lead section that does not really comply with WP:LEAD + a very long section on "political career" consisting of long paragraphs without any subsections that would help navigate through it).
The second issue, which perhaps does not influence readability that much, but is even more grave when it comes to GA reviewing, is the lack of sources for perhaps more than a half of the article's bulk, including statements of controversial nature which are likely to be challenged. I have also found some speculative statements (btw, the "unofficial candidate" thing reeks of WP:CRYSTAL) and ones that can be said to be POV.
I am sorry I cannot go into more detail ATM, but I believe there is quite a bit of work to be done before the article can be renominated. PrinceGloria 20:04, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Name change ?
When and why did he change his name from supposedly Perske to Peres ?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.184.143.196 (talk • contribs).

Update article to reflect presidency
For starters, the infobox needs updating and I'm not too sure how to do it. -ReuvenkT C 12:12, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Uh.. The infobox now says he's both the incumbent prime minister and president. nadav (talk) 12:36, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Keep an eye out
I added Peres's victory to the news portal at Portal:Current events, so everyone should keep an eye out for vandalism if this gets on the main page. nadav (talk) 12:14, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
President
He isn't president yet, the president is still Katzav for another month from now.--Doron 13:09, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- That's why I put the infobox criteria to "Succeeding" rather than "succeeded", the function allows for president-elect designations. -- Chabuk [ T • C ] 15:24, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- My feeling is that the photo is a bit too large, so the infobox is out of place. Anyone know how to resize it?--Gilabrand 15:32, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Where he was born
The infobox now states that Peres was born in Belarus. It doesn't matter what the place is called now. If he was born in a small town in Poland, that's what should be in the info box. This is not the place for Russian patriotism (note the flag).--Gilabrand 15:49, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Also, I think there is no need to state his age in parentheses. The birth date is sufficient. Readers can do their own math.--Gilabrand 15:56, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Peres was elected in 1984
In 1984, the Labor Party won a tie with the Likud in the general elections. Peres became prime minister for two years as a direct result of the people`s choice.
- By definition, you don't "win" a tie. This is the first election he's outright won. --Chabuk [ T • C ] 17:27, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Does this jew knows Polish Language? After all,he lived here for 20 years.
Still, there is no mention of Polish Language, but there is of hebrew, english and french, even though he most probably speeks Polish Language better.
- Actually, he moved to Tel Aviv when he was 11, according to the article; there's no particular reason he'd speak Polish. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 02:54, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, you knew english by your 11th birthday, didn`t you? I suspect if this man is capable of becoming a president of Israel,he would also been capable of learning a Polish language,by the time he is 11.Even more so,for there was no Israel back in 1923-1934,when he lived in Poland. Lets see,you were born in USA,but your family lives there for less then 500 years.Still,it is highly unlikely that you learned your original language before English.WELL,HIS FAMILY LIVED IN POLAND MOST PROBABLY FOR 1000 OR SO YEARS. So he most definetly knows Polish.
- The source in the article indicates he spoke three other languages at home. It's at least unclear that he knows Polish. Perhaps you can find a source to clear it up?--Chaser - T 13:53, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- As I said:
"I was born in a small Jewish shtetl that -- during the two wars, the first and the second it was under Polish control -- but otherwise it was Belarus. Russians. And they hated the Poles. They wouldn't speak the language. The place I was born was a very small place, totally Jewish, and we were living neither in Poland nor in Russia. We were living in Israel from the day I was born, even before emigrating." (Shimon Peres, Academy of Achievement interview, 2003).[1]
- Yeah, that's why I added that reference, responding to this question. By the way, it doesn't seem like he makes too much of a distinction between things Belarusian and Russian. It's likely perhaps he actually spoke Belarusian as his "Russian" vernacular, but of course we would need a source for that too.--Pharos 23:55, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Many Jews who lived in Poland, especially in shtetls, used mainly Yiddish and spoke Polish very poorly. If he left Poland when he was 11 it is quite probable that he cannot speak Polish anymore. Tsf 01:14, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
- But Polish was not actually the language spoken in that part of Poland, anyway (the local vernacular was Belarusian and today that area is part of Belarus). See above.--Pharos 23:59, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
It seems that there is no reliable information about languages he really speaks (or spoke), but one thing is certain whenever he appears on TV and speaks English: he has a strong Hebrew accent which is very different from Polish or (Bela)Russian. Tsf (talk) 11:59, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Why do we need here his name in Arabic?
Why for there's an Arabic spelling of his name? Is he an Arab? No. Does he live in an Arabic country? No. Does his native language is Arabic? No. So it should be removed. --unpluggged 15:39, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- He is the president of all the citizens of Israel, including the Arab citizens. In Israel, the presidency is not a political post. Besides, Arabic is one of the official languages--Gilabrand 16:30, 14 June 2007 (UTC).
Languages Spoken: Needs citation but already cited...???
The second sentence of the "early life" subsection reads: "Peres was raised speaking Hebrew, Yiddish, and Russian." But there is a "citation needed" tag attached to "Hebrew."
The source provided for this sentence (!) clearly says (emphasis added): "At our home, we spoke three languages: Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian." So, why the tag? --Kuaichik 17:45, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Place of birth
The link referring to his town of birth doesn't link anywhere meaningful. Apparently, it is a location in modern Belarus near Valozhyn (Vishniev or something similar). If anybody could locate the exact name and create a stub about the place, it would be great. Valentinian T / C 21:39, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe it's Vishniev [2]. The German Wikipedia article uses the spelling "Wischnewa," saying it was officially in Poland at the time. (Now, of course, it is part of Belarus, but the above link still calls it "Vishniev, Poland" for some reason). --Kuaichik 22:10, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- In the "Achievement Academy" interview, he says he grew up in a small all-Jewish shtetl, but he doesn't mention the name.--Pharos 23:58, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- The Polish version reads: Wiśniewie (obecnie Białoruś, obwód miński, rejon wołożyński) (=Belarus, Minsk Voblast, Valozhyn region), i.e. the westernmost part of Minsk Voblast. The Russian version uses the name Вишнево and a map of Minsk Voblast does indeed have a settlement named Višnevo on the south side of the railway line between Lida and Molodečno (half-way between the two cities) and NW of Voložin. Trouble is that that I don't know if the Belarusian name differs from the Russian one. Valentinian T / C 00:51, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- Peres says it was 100km south of Minsk (full interview).--Pharos 01:44, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- Interesting. Višnevec between Stolbcy and Nesviž? Just a thought. Valentinian T / C 02:02, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- You know, his geography might have been a bit hazy, considering he left at the age of 11 ;) This page has a map and mentions a visit he made back to his hometown in 1992.--Pharos 02:37, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds like a likely explanation. :) The map you mentioned shows the place indicated by the Polish article (Belarus, Minsk Voblast, Valozhyn region and it matches the town of Вишнево / Višnevo I mentioned as my first guess. It is a former Polish territory, located near the road between Vilnius (NW) and Minsk (SE). The other axis is something like Lida (SW) and Molodečno (NE). Looks like we just need the proper Belarusian name now. Valentinian T / C 16:12, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Plagiarism of this article by Croatian university
I found this PDF at the website of the University of Split oddly familiar. I rather suspect it has something to do with Mr. Peres's recent visit to the university.--Pharos 03:21, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- I believe this is generally okay. See the Wikipedia license at the bottom of the page. 88.153.172.252 13:30, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- If they had attributed it to us, that would have totally appropriate (ideally, they should have preserved the GFDL notice as well, but that's another issue). Unfortunately, they published it as if it were their own work, which is the definition of plagiarism (a university should know better).--Pharos 23:55, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

His new predecessor
Ms. Izak is now officially acting president now that Katsev has resigned. I tried to have that fact mentioned in the article, but somehow the thing went wonky, Shouldn't it be changed to reflect that (the new acting president for two weeks, not the thing going wonky)Ericl 20:47, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Time in politics
The article says that he has been in politics for over 65 years (therefore since age 18 or earlier). This strikes me as the kind of thing that might be exaggerated somewhat. The earliest date given for any kind of participation in politics in the article is 1943. If it stretches back even further than that, let's get a source for a date. Any particular reason why it states two dates for his birth, one Gregorian one not? And what is the other date, anyways?

GA fail
I'm sorry, but I cannot pass the article at this time. Here are some things for you to work on before renominating the article:
- There are entire sections and paragraphs without inline citations. An article needs to be fully referenced to be a GA. This is the biggest issue with the article.
- Numbers under 100 should be spelled out.
- Paragraphs need to be longer than a sentence or two. Either merge shorter paragraphs together, into larger ones, or delete them entirely.
- A couple of the citations need to be formatted with the Template:cite web.
Good luck. Nikki311 03:09, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
- You are absolutely right in your criticisms except for one thing. Only numbers under 10 are spelled out.--Gilabrand (talk) 11:25, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

- In the book published in French, Shimon Peres says Je suis né à Vichneva en 5683, le vingtième jour du mois de Ab, ce qui correspond dans le calendrier grégorien au 21 août 1923 (Google books), which means "I was born in Vichneva in 5683, the 20th of Av, which means in Gregorian calendar August 21st 1923", but, according to hebcal.com, 20th of Av, 5683 = 2 August 1923. This implies that Shimon Peres might have made a calculation mistake when converting from one calendar to another. Perhaps we should ask a specialist of calendar conversion to help us. - To the contrary, it seems rather preposterous to claim that Shimon Peres was born in the month of Elul (21 August 1923 = 9th of Elul, 5683) rather than in the month of Av, as he elaborates himself on the significance of being born in the month of Av in his book, and while the Jerusalem Post confirms that his birthday celebration according to the Jewish Calendar is August 21st 2008, which can be converted as follows : Thu, 21 August 2008 = 20th of Av, 5768. Teofilo talk 13:03, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- See also : The published discrepancies evidently stem from the fact that Peres primarily observes his Hebrew birth-date - the 20th of Av. In 1923, this coincided with August 2, the date cited in most biographies of Israel's ninth president. This year, the 20th of Av falls on Saturday, August 4. - Perhaps the thing to do might be to use the 20 Av 5683 date as his birth-date, since that is what he observes, and then subscript August 2, 1923 (similar to how N.S./O.S. is often done in bio wiki's). That provides an indication that the Hebrew date is what should be used for observance, as well as the actual day in history in 1923 that he was born. The JPost article explains that it will be a different Gregorian day every year that Peres actually celebrates. So make the emphasis on the Hebrew date as he does. Just an outsider lay-person's two cent thought....Wiseprincebambi (talk) 22:25, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Reference to "Mirage IV"
The article has a small factual error: Israel has never acquired any Mirage IV aircraft. Mirage IV was a strategic attack aircraft that the French have never exported. I corrected this to "Mirage III" as it should be.

Any rationale why he changed his name to the Sephardi-sounding Peres? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.31.163.209 (talk) 19:21, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
I found my way here from Bearded_vulture where New Republic is cited as saying "In 1945, when he was still Shimon Persky, while mapping a portion of the Negev desert with David Ben-Gurion, he stumbled on the nest of a bearded vulture, or “Peres” as the bird is known in Hebrew. He liked the sound of “Peres”--and it was Hebrew, not Yiddish. And so Shimon Persky became Shimon Peres." I know nothing about Mr. Peres, and came here to see if there was anything else mentioned on the topic. I was a little surprised to find no mention at all (aside from this question) of the reason for, or occasion of, the name change, but I'll leave it to wiser minds to decide what to do with the information. Declaring that a politician was named after a vulture is a bigger mess than I want to step in. --71.234.116.22 (talk) 00:46, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
Genocide denial
Although it provides the full quote of his statement, the article downplays Peres' denial of the Armenian genocide. Instead of "allegedly downplayed", imho the article should clearly state that Peres denies the Armenian genocide and should provide a citation for the quote, such as the April 10th edition of the Turkish Daily News (TDN). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Greggdourgarian (talk • contribs) 17:33, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

1990-1995: citation needed
The paragraph appears to read "After Rabin's assassination in 1995, Peres again became Prime Minister.[citation needed]"
This is obviously not the case; Peres *did* become prime minister after Rabin was assassinated.
Either the citation needed mark has been left behind by mistake, or it was supposed to refer to something else in the same paragraph, in which case it should be moved to refer to something more controversial.

'wiped off the map' controversy
See the following passage from the 'Political Views' section of the article:
"In the same speech, Peres compared Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his call to "wipe Israel off the map" to the genocidal threats to European Jewry made by Adolf Hitler in the years prior to the Holocaust.[32] "
I wanted to hyperlink the text '"wipe Israel off the map"' to the following wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmoud_Ahmadinejad_and_Israel#.22Wiped_off_the_map.22_controversy
The wording of the quote declaratively affirms that there was in fact a call to wipe Israel off the map and fails to mention the controversy surrounding the quality of the translation.
Therefore I feel that it fails to live up to NPOV criteria.
Without wishing to cause a political dispute in the article, I feel it would be helpful (and in the interests of neutrality) to link this controversial quote to another wikipedia article capable of shedding light on the matter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wibblyglorph (talk • contribs) 13:46, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

"republican constitution"
"the fourth oldest head of state ever under a republican constitution", no he's not. for the simple reason that Israel does not have a republican constitution. in fact Israel does not have ANY constitution. this is because of the status quo agreement under which Israel doesn't build a normative civil democracy with a constitution and in exchange (some sects among) Orthodox Jews offer a sort of grudging compliance with the state. this sentence should maybe be changed to "the fourth oldest non-monarchial head of state ever" but i don't know if this also includes bishops or lamas or imams who headed states but aren't quite considered monarchs. in any event, no citation is provided. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.125.227.60 (talk) 17:25, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

Lauren Bacall's legal original name was NOT Betty Joan Persky, but Betty Joan Perske. Legally, after her father (William Perske) left her mother and abandoned her at the age of 8, her mother legally changed Betty's name to Betty Joan Bacal. Reason: Name “Ben-Gurion” typed with minor mistake, without hyper-minus (Ben Gurion) and when the first time appears name David Ben-Gurion should link to Wikipedia page “David Ben-Gurion”

Peace prize
There appears to be an inside story about how Peres won his Nobel.
'The Nobel Prize committee decided to award the Peace Prize to Arafat and Rabin. Peres' admirers around the world raised hell, until the committee added Peres to the list. Justice demanded awarding the prize also to Mahmoud Abbas, who had signed with Peres. But the statutes allow only for three laureates. Hello, I am not certain to whom I am writing and if formality is required here. Either way, I will go straight to the point. Israel's 9th prime minister Shimon Peres had passed away yesterday. On his Wikipedia page there is an old photo, where he was a mere child. I have cleaned this photo, as a way to show my gratitude for what he has done for my country. So I would like to replace the photo with the cleaned one. Best Regards, Wikipedia Fresh user.

The infobox is broken thanks to a rogue pair of closed curly brackets on the "awards" line:
|awards = [[Nobel Peace Prize]] (1994)}}
As such, several infobox syntax lines spill over into the page's contents. Removing the curly brackets should fix this.

I'd like to add a few things after the first sentence, "From 1954, as Director-General of the Ministry of Defense, Peres was involved in the planning of the 1956 Suez War, in partnership with France and Britain" in the Suez Crisis 1956 chapter. I've written the following to be added after the first sentence I just mentioned above. "The Israeli leadership viewed the United States as the first country in the world to recognize the new Jewish state, and as the natural candidate to turn to for arms. However, as Peres had pointed out, Israel was denied arms while other Arab countries were still receiving them. This happened in spite of the Tripartite Declaration which was issued in May, 25th 1950, where by France, Britain and the United States had committed themselves to maintain an arms balance in the region (p.408). After Israel was denied arms by the U.S., Peres looked at France as the alternative source of arms (p. 412). Peres was confident that France would ally with them because of France's empathy for the underdeveloped Jewish state. Another fact that made Peres confident that France would agree to ally with them was that the French had been very sympathetic towards the Jews. In 1950, some of France's politicians had been involved in the Resistance during World War 2 and others had been prisoners in the concentration camps that had held Jews (p. 414). After Ben-Gurion returned to the Defense Ministry in February 1955, Peres had to persuade his mentor that France was the most logical country to turn to for arms after the U.S. had previously denied them (p. 413). Ben-Gurion gave Peres complete authority to pursue what we know today as the 'French connection'(p.413). Peres himself built a personal relationship with French politicians, bureaucrats, military officials and industrialists (p.418). In the fall of 1954, France delivered a substantial package of arms (p. 418)." If anyone wants to make comments on these changes or any suggestions, please let me know on this talk page or my talk page. Source: Ziv, G. "Shimon Peres and the French-Israeli Alliance, 1954--9." Independence
There is mistake in the article. I'd have fixed it but it seems like editing is not allowed. Anyway, it says Israel received "independence" in 1948. Israel didn't exist as any kind of entity before its establishment at the end of the British Mandate on May 14, 1948, so the term 'independence' seems inapplicable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.64.50.54 (talk) 15:26, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

Qana
The text says "Israel conducted massive air raids and extensive shelling in southern Lebanon. 106 Lebanese civilians died in the shelling of Qana, when a UN compound was hit in an Israeli shelling.[62]"
That is an euphemistic way to describe the Qana massacre, one of the most egregious events in Shimon Peres life. The IDF deliberately shelled an UN refugee camp and UN soldiers stationed within that was well-known to their command. The paragraph is written as if it were an "Errors were made" scenario. Amnesty International and a UN report came to rather striking conclusions:
"the IDF intentionally attacked the UN compound, although the motives for doing so remain unclear. The IDF have failed to substantiate their claim that the attack was a mistake. Even if they were to do so they would still bear responsibility for killing so many civilians by taking the risk to launch an attack so close to the UN compound." 85.55.201.134 (talk) 16:06, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
