I have basically written this article for the first time, as the stub was... troubling. Not only were there factual errors (Valikhanov was not a COSSACK, but a KAZAK), there was very little information of any kind save for un-cited Kazakh nationalistic trivia from 'oral histories' and the like. I hope that someone will let the Cossack article writers know that he does not belong in their lists, though it is nice to see how many articles (incorrectly) link to this article. Shokan Walikhanuli → Chokan Valikhanov — This historical figure is known by many names today, but the one most common in English is Chokan Valikhanov (see the Smithsonian Institutes' page used for the writing of this article for example). The present name is also an incorrect transliteration of the Qazaq/Kazakh spelling, and should instead by Shoqan Walikhanuly or Ualykhanuly - the point being that Kazakh lacks a standard English transliteration, another reason to use the original Russian spelling. There is a strong movement of nationalism surrounding this figure, who did not identify with a Kazakh state, but as a Kazak (Kirgiz-Kaisak) citizen of the Russian Empire, and spoke Russian, and generally spelled his name as Chokan Valikhanov, even when writing in English. The subject was Kazakh, not Kazakhstani. The latter refers to people who were connected to Kazakhstan, a place created in the 20th-century. No one before the 20th-century should be in such categories. He has been added to the appropriate Ethnic Kazakh people category. He should be removed from the deaths in Kazakhstan tree, since he did not die in Kazakhstan, and he should be removed from the Kazakhstani occupation categories. These are for nationals of Kazakhstan who filled these occupations. He was not a national of such places.John Pack Lambert (talk) 22:01, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
