The Dangers in My Heart (Japanese: 僕の心のヤバイやつ, Hepburn: Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Norio Sakurai. It started serialization in Weekly Shōnen Champion in March 2018 and was moved to Champion Cross, before being moved again to Manga Cross. It has been published in eight tankōbon volumes. An anime television series adaptation produced by Shin-Ei Animation aired from April to June 2023. A second season is set to premiere in January 2024.
Premise
Kyotaro Ichikawa is a disgruntled loner student who fantasizes about murdering his popular classmates, often reading a murder encyclopedia and learning about human anatomy, with the beautiful class idol, Anna Yamada, being his prime target. However, when he observes that Anna is rather quirky in her own way, and when she becomes increasingly friendly towards Kyotaro, he gradually warms up to her and they start to become closer.

- A middle school boy who has chuunibyou tendencies. He loves spending time reading books in the library, where he and Anna first met. Initially, Kyotaro had delusions of killing Anna and making her corpse his alone, but they were replaced by romantic affection as he spends more time around her. He can be quite perceptive in social situations but often fails to pick up on other social problems due to his lack of communication skills and low self esteem. During the school trip to Kyoto in his final year, he confesses to Anna and becomes her boyfriend.
- Anna Yamada (山田 杏奈, Yamada Anna)

- A tall middle school girl who is a magazine model and actress. She is very popular with both boys and girls but has a clumsy side to her. Anna frequently brings snacks and candy in the library, much to Kyotaro's dismay. She’s very considerate of others, such as eating snacks in private because her friend Chii has allergies. This consideration is tied to something of a guilt complex, which leads to bouts of anxiety where she feels she’s inconvenienced other people to the point of tears. She is also shown to be very jealous to the point of obsession whenever Kyotaro interacts with other girls.
- Chihiro Kobayashi (小林 ちひろ, Kobayashi Chihiro)

- Anna's childhood friend who acts as her tsukkomi (straight man). She is oblivious to the relationships of the people around her, even not realizing that she was once used as bait by Haruya to get closer to Anna until Moeko and Serina point it out to her.
- Moeko Sekine (関根 萌子, Sekine Moeko)

- Anna's friend who is a gyaru. Despite Kyotaro's belief that she is stupid, she is actually academically capable, once scoring fifth in her entire grade. Moeko is also socially adept, often saving Anna and Kyotaro from embarrassing situations. However, her closeness to Kyotaro also means that Moeko is a target of Anna's jealousy.

- Anna's reserved friend with a sharp gaze. She's interested in dancing, hair styling, and is a big fan of delinquent manga such Crows and Worst She has a neutral opinion of Kyotaro but also sees him as unreliable. She attended the same elementary school as Rin.
- Shō Adachi (足立 翔, Adachi Shō)

- Kyotaro's classmate, who always blurts out perverted thoughts. He reveals to Kyotaro that he seriously falls in love with Anna, and this rivalry culminated during the sports festival in their third year. Despite Kyotaro's defeat, Sho yielded to Kyotaro and remains his friend.
- Kenta Kanzaki (神崎 健太, Kanzaki Kenta)

- Kyotaro's classmate in the baseball club. He is romantically interested in Honoka, who eventually reciprocates his feelings during the Kyoto trip.

- Kyotaro's classmate, who is overweight. He is part of the perverted trio along with Kenta and Sho.

- Anna and Kyotaro's classmate. A chubby girl who is interested in Kenta and eventually starts dating him. She is the first person to find out about Anna and Kyotaro's romantic interest in each other.

- Kyotaro's elder sister, a musician and a university student at Waseda University. She approves of her brother's relationship and is very close to Anna. She is shown to be sensitive when it comes to her own non-existent love story.

- An upperclassman one year above the main cast. He is nicknamed "Nanpai" (Senpai Pick-Up Artist) by Kyotaro because of his persistence in getting closer to Anna. However, during his graduation, he revealed that he was seriously in love with Anna.

- .A student and friend of Serina from elementary school. She accidentally hit Anna with a basketball once in her second year, angering Serina. She later apologizes to Anna. She joins Anna and Kyotaro as their classmate in their 3rd year.

- Anna and Kyotaro's classmate during their final year. She is a tall and beautiful girl with blonde hair. Her classmates see her as a cool beauty, but in truth, she also has a cute and clumsy side, just like Anna. She is close friends with Kanna.
- Kanna Andou (安堂 カンナ, Andō Kanna)
- Anna and Kyotaro's classmate during their final year. She always wears a black mask and twin tails. Kanna is greatly interested in others' love lives to the point of throwing a flash mob for a new couple, despite their embarrassment.
- Nico Kouda (香田 ニコ, Kōda Nico)
- Anna's 19-year-old model colleague, who is also her stalker. She always laments the distance between her and Anna and thus strives to get more information from Anna's friends, much to Kyotaro's dismay. She owns a summer house in Kamakura, Kanagawa as a means to reduce her tax payment.
- Ms. Moriya (守屋先生, Moriya-sensei)
- Class 3-1's homeroom teacher and also PE teacher. Kyotaro sees her as a typical annoying PE teacher with an overly competitive side to her.

Manga
The series is written and illustrated by Norio Sakurai. It started serialization in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine on March 8, 2018.[8] On April 10, 2018, the series was transferred to the Champion Cross manga website.[9] On July 10, 2018, Akita Shoten merged Champion Cross with their newly created manga website, Manga Cross. When the websites merged, it was transferred to Manga Cross.[10] As of March 2023, eight volumes have been released.[11]
In December 2020, Seven Seas Entertainment announced they licensed the series for English publication.[12] The series is also licensed by Tong Li Publishing in Taiwan.[13] Individual chapters of the series are called kartes.

Anime
In August 2022, it was announced that the series is receiving an anime television series adaptation.[37] The series is produced by Shin-Ei Animation and directed by Hiroaki Akagi, with scripts written by Jukki Hanada, character designs handled by Masato Katsumata, and music composed by Kensuke Ushio.[2] It aired from April 2 to June 18, 2023, on TV Asahi's NUMAnimation block.[38] The opening theme song is "Shayō" (斜陽, "Setting Sun") by Yorushika, while the ending theme song is "Sū Sentimental" (数センチメンタル, "A few Sentimental") by Kohana Lam.[39] At Anime NYC 2022, Sentai Filmworks announced that they licensed the series, and will be streaming it on Hidive.[40] Plus Media Networks Asia to carried the anime in Southeast Asia, to be premiered on Aniplus Asia.[41]
A second season was announced after the airing of the twelfth episode. It is set to premiere in January 2024 on the same programming block.[42]

Kyotaro is a troubled student who fantasizes about murdering his classmates, in particular magazine model and classmate Anna, even carrying a box-cutter for that purpose. By chance he and Anna are alone in the library where he notices the odd behavior she exhibits, including humming like a monkey. Seeing she needs scissors for her schoolwork he impulsively lends her his box-cutter, leaving him without his weapon. He finds the box-cutter in his desk later, surprising him she knew which desk was his. He begins to notice more odd behaviors, which somehow tempts him to secretly offer help. They accidentally interrupt a classmates love confession and Kyotaro is forced by Anna to make cat noises to conceal their eavesdropping. Kyotaro is baffled by his continuing to help her. Later he spots Anna in a shop blatantly trying to get noticed as the model on the magazines, which makes him embarrassed on her behalf. On impulse he buys the magazine and it is implied he uses it to masturbate. The next day he spots a "senpai" named Haruya harassing Anna and impulsively speeds his bike into the river as a distraction. Anna correctly deduces he did it to help, which makes her happy. | |||||

Anna brings a snack to school that must be mixed with water, which she spills repeatedly. Kyotaro is compelled to fetch a glass but finds her using a bowl, increasing his urge to kill her. On a hot day Anna sweats so several boys try to peek at her bra but Kyotaro sabotages them. In the library Kyotaro sees she is wearing a swimsuit instead of a bra. Chihiro appears so Anna hides under the desk, giving him an erection. Chihiro ends up revealing she is allergic to snack food so Anna always snacks alone. Kyotaro is forced to visit the bathroom with his erection. The class does a haunted house for Culture Festival and Anna notices her name on a tombstone. Kyotaro takes the blame to spare the real culprit, Honoko, but Honoko reveals she had innocently used everyone’s names, not just Anna. Anna realizes Kyotaro took the blame trying to spare Honoko. Kyotaro notices Haruya approach Anna again but is relieved when other girls protect Anna this time. He and Anna end up alone by a display of town maps, revealing their homes are only one mile apart. Kyotaro begins writing a dark fantasy manga. Kyotaro goes to the infirmary with headache and finds Anna there with stomach-ache. He wonders if he should kill her but she shares her own medicine with him, then leaves. The nurse asks him to return the shirt Anna left behind, the smell of which arouses him. Boys in class ask Kyotaro to pass Anna a lewd note. Kyotaro instead passes the drawing of his manga heroine, which resembles her. The same boys attempt a trick that supposedly reveals the girls favorite sex position, but the girls expose them before Anna falls for it. Anna unwittingly performs the trick on Kyotaro that suggests girl-on-top position, giving him another erection. Kyotaro cannot reconcile his hatred with his sexual attraction so when Anna injures her nose in basketball he follows her to the infirmary determined to kill her. When he hears Anna crying over her nose ruining an important photoshoot, and sees she has kept his drawing, he realizes he loves her. As her nose hurts continuously Kyotaro leaves tissues as an anonymous gift. He is rather disappointed she uses them to clean snack crumbs and yet happy to see her smile again. | |||||

Kyotaro decides love is a mental illness. When Anna brings a milk based snack to the library he insists she use a bowl, but they are caught by a teacher, causing the snack to spill all over Anna. Kyotaro notices the spilled snack looks lewd. Kyotaro notices Kanaoya staring at Anna and deduces she wants to talk to her so he leaves them alone in the library. Kanaoya apologizes for hurting Anna’s nose. Serina noticed what Kyotaro did and thanks him. Somehow, Kyotaro ends up taking Anna home on his bike. While drinking, Anna gives Kyotaro the bottle lid, then after getting home she gives him his own bottle as a thank you for the ride, so Kyotaro embarrassingly gives her the lid from his bottle, making her laugh. Anna spots Kyotaro with his doting older sister and is cheerfully envious since she is an only child. Kyotaro realizes Anna came to talk to him on purpose, despite her claim otherwise. Anna gets in trouble for snacking in the library until Kyotaro points out the lack of evidence. The teacher is so happy to see Kyotaro interacting with people he forgets to scold Anna. The class gets to go on job experience. Kyotaro and the pervert-boys all want to be in Anna’s group. Kyotaro gets onto Anna’s group by manipulating Kanzaki into Hara’s group, whom Kanzaki is dating. Anna notices and praises Kyotaro’s good deed. Anna and Hara discuss dating, revealing Anna has never dated. Hara is amused Anna spends so much time with Kyotaro. During the rain Anna has no umbrella so she borrows Kyotaro’s raincoat to go buy one. Kyotaro notices she forgot her purse and rushes it to her, becoming soaked, only to find she had an umbrella all along. Anna covers her mistake by claiming it is broken. Kyotaro realizes he is not mentally ill, he loves her. Anna, her friends, Kyotaro and pervert Adachi visit a manga publisher. Kyotaro tries not to show Anna his otaku side but she notices anyway and convinces him to enjoy himself. While in a cramped elevator Anna and Kyotaro are pressed together. He struggles not to become aroused, then surprisingly notices Anna is as flustered as he is. Anna later tries to talk about manga, but Kyotaro angrily convinces himself she is mocking him. As Kyotoro goes to the bathroom, Anna waits for him. They suddenly realize everyone else is already on the train. They try to run for it, but end up missing the train, leaving Anna and Kyotaro at the station. | |||||

Anna blames herself for missing the train. Feeling guilty, Kyotaro buys her a drink then takes the blame himself, making her smile. On the next train, Anna cryptically asks Kyotaro if two classmates dating would be better to announce it or keep it secret. Kana notices Kyotaro is actually enjoying school. Kyotaro is surprised when Anna waits outside school specifically to give him the manga series she had promised to lend him, though she seems flustered over it. Later, Anna insists he read the manga in the library but stumbles with her breasts in his face. Adachi notices Kyotaro talking with Anna and interrogates him on Anna’s love life, revealing he thinks he loves her because of how sexy she is. Kyotaro is more disgusted by Adachi than usual because there is more to like Anna for than her looks. Realising this he once again wonders if he loves her himself. The no eating rule is finally signposted in the library so Kyotaro worries Anna will stop visiting. Anna keeps snacking anyway but when a teacher almost catches her, Kyotaro grabs her hand to hide the evidence. Kyotaro learns Anna is on a weekly TV programme. During running class, Anna matches speeds with him to talk. She even asks for his help standing up, touching hands on purpose. Kyotaro and Anna accidentally switch jackets so they secretly trade back in the infirmary. Anna secretly smells his jacket before returning it. She abruptly suggests measuring their heights for fun, putting her breasts in Kyotaro’s face. Kyotaro simply cannot understand her behaviour. News spreads Anna will be in a movie. Class seating is rearranged and Anna is sat ahead of Kyotaro. Anna is jealous Haru is sat next to Kyotaro. Kyotaro assures her she is the only one he sees, which Anna seriously misinterprets. Haru arranges to switch seats, putting Anna behind Kyotaro. In the library he asks about the movie and learns it is a smaller role than their classmates assumed. She asks to practice her one line with him, though as it involves calling him a creep she drags him into a cramped cupboard. Feeling awkward he promises to watch the movie, so she leaves, unable to call him a creep anymore. Kyotaro watches her TV programme and again finds it is a much smaller role than he assumed. Chihiro joins Anna in the library, revealing to Kyotaro Anna talks about him constantly, embarrassing her. Chihiro is surprised Kyotaro now not only talks, he even smiles. Parent-teacher conferences arrive and Kyotaro sees Anna’s mother is overbearing and hyper-critical. Kyotaro is mortified Anna overhears him agreeing with his mother Anna is beautiful. Anna starts getting even closer to him during library time. Anna is almost caught with sweets again, but when Kyotaro whispers a warning in her ear, she becomes so flustered she falls off her chair. After briefly meeting Anna in the rain Kyotaro bikes home, only to embarrassingly find Anna left a bag with tampons in his basket, so he races back to her, only to find they were for Anna’s mother. After having a strange dream about Anna, Kyotaro finds the rain gave him a cold. Anna visits after school to bring him ice-cream. Embarrassed at Anna in his home, Kyotaro passes out. Anna helps him but can’t resist hugging him in his delirium. Kyotaro wakes up later unsure whether he dreamt what happened. His mother confirms Anna visited and was worried about him. Returning to school, Kyotaro sees Anna has a mild cold, but doesn’t realize she caught it from their hug. | |||||

Anna tries to get Kyotaro’s number, but he is oblivious. She decides to get it by creating a group chat for their class, but her friend Moeko gets his number first, infuriating her. This causes Kyotaro to realize she wanted his number the whole time. Haruya asks out Chihiro to get closer to Anna, but Anna can’t bring herself to upset Chihiro by telling her. Two girls ask Anna about boyfriends, but when Anna firmly denies having one they realize she is saying it for Kyotaro’s benefit, and leave them alone. When Haruya arrives Anna fakes a kiss with Kyotaro, so he leaves and Moeko ends up telling Chihiro the truth about Haruya. Kyotaro angrily convinces himself Anna has been using him to deter Haruya since they met, so he ignores her for three days. Upset, Anna confronts him and asks if she done anything wrong and starts crying. Kyotaro realizes Anna isn’t cruel enough to use people. He apologizes so she impulsively hugs him, and this time he lets her. They end up talking their whole walk home and since it is winter break the next day Anna asks him to meet out of school, this time openly demanding his number and they end up texting all night. | |||||

Kyotaro arrives to their meeting on Christmas Eve early and realises Anna dressed up while he looks like a stalker. Anna takes him for pancakes, causing him to feel he is on a first date, though he is sure he is imagining it. Kyotaro is embarrassed when he realises he can’t afford anything except coffee and feels increasingly embarrassed to look Anna in the face. While clothes shopping Anna asks him to pick outfits for her, flustering him when he hears her undressing behind the curtain. Kana appears shopping and Anna, realising Kyotaro doesn’t want Kana to see them, pulls him into the changing room with her. Due to their proximity Anna is able to make Kyotaro promise to introduce her to his sister soon. Kyotaro is shocked to see her bra under her unzipped dress, which she decides to buy. Kyotaro is able to tell her he is having fun, so she reveals a scarf she bought him. To not be separated on the busy train Anna grabs his hand and somehow they just keep holding hands for the entire journey plus their walk to Anna’s house. Kyotaro is surprised Anna hopes to see him again before New Year’s Eve. Kyotaro starts to wonder if maybe he does have a chance with Anna. | |||||

Four days before New Year, Kyotaro and his family travel to visit his grandmother. While taking a photo of snow for Anna, he falls and breaks his arm, so they decide to return home in the morning. Kana catches him on a secret video call to Anna. He is surprised when Kana doesn’t tease him, then more surprised when Anna calls back immediately just to say goodnight. Kana asks to meet Anna sometime. Kyotaro meets Anna walking her dog and considers giving her a souvenir dog keychain he bought for her but decides against it. While playing with her dog Anna holds his hand again, so he gives her the keychain anyway, surprising him at how happy she becomes. She arranges to see him during New Year shrine visits. Kyotaro randomly encounters several classmates on New Years night, including Anna’s friend Moeko, and Haruya who pressures Kyotaro for Anna’s phone number. To protect Anna Kyotaro, he refuses and leaves. Impressed, Moeko goes with him and teases Kyotaro into admitting he loves Anna, though she also points out it has been obvious for some time, embarrassing him. He calls Anna at midnight to hear her voice and wish her happy New Year. He decides he will have to tell Anna how he feels very soon. | |||||

Due to Anna arriving early, Kyotaro ends up meeting her at the shrine with Kana and his parents. As his arm is broken, Kyotaro cannot clap during prayers so Anna helps using her own hand, flustering him. Kana invites Anna to their house to see Kyotaro’s childhood photo’s and Anna notices he had two friends, though Kyotaro bitterly reveals they left to attend different private middle schools. Kana leaves them alone but thanks Anna for being Kyotaro’s friend. Anna insists on looking at more photos but he panics when she finds a magazine of her pictures and as he jumps to hide it ends up fully on top of her. They are both embarrassed, but Anna isn’t upset and instead takes copies of his photos, promising he can see her photos next time. Kyotaro is confused as it sounded like she wants him to visit her house. Flashbacks show Kyotaro lost his friends because his grades weren’t good enough to attend the same school. Seeing Anna at school the next day he is compelled to tell her she is why he could enjoy going to school again, so she hugs him and he hugs her back. Moeko spots them being awkward afterwards and mistakenly assumes they have “done it.” |

In 2019, the series ranked fourth in the Next Manga Awards in the web manga category.[46] In 2020, the series ranked first in the same category.[47] The series ranked third in the 2020 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook.[48] It also ranked fourth in the fourth Tsutaya Comic Awards.[49] It ranked thirteenth in Japanese bookstore Honya Club's employee recommendations.[50] It was also nominated for the Manga Taishō in 2020.[51] It ranked fourth in a 2020 poll asking people what manga they most wanted to see adapted into an anime.[52] It ranked first in the same poll in 2021.[53]
In June 2023, TV Asahi announced during their end-of-year fiscal results that the anime adaptation has recorded the highest global sales for an anime program in the NUMAnimation programming block.[54]
As of September 2023, the manga has over 3 million copies in circulation.[55]
