The upcoming eighth studio album by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira, named Shakira, is scheduled for release in March 25th 2014 by Roc Nation.[2] The album's first single is Can't Remember To Forget You and features The Barbadian singer Rihanna. It was released on January 13th 2014. The music video for the song was shot in early December 2013 by director Joseph Kahn and will be released on January 29th.

Background

[edit]

Shakira was interviewed by Billboard.com regarding her next project. When asked about her next endeavour, she replied:

"I already started to write new material. I've begun to explore in the recording studio whenever I have time in Barcelona and here in Miami. I'm working with different producers and DJs, and I try to feed off from that and find new sources of inspiration and new musical motivation. I'm anxious to return to the studio. My body is asking for it."[3]

In February 2012, it was revealed that Shakira signed to Roc Nation for new management purposes for her upcoming album, after lack of promotion for her previous two albums, She Wolf and Sale El Sol under Epic Records.[4]

"The composition is not guided by nothing more than for my own inspiration. When there is a letter or a melody, just the job to take what seems best at the time. My job as a producer is the continuation of the previous process, but is not subject to what is or what it sounds like behind the studio door."

—Shakira during an interview with El Espectador.[5]

From mid August 2011, Shakira began work on her new English album. Shakira has said in interviews that this album will consist of songs in the dance genre. Her first studio recording sessions for this album at "Estopa" Barcelona have been with famous DJs and artists including Afrojack who was seen on August 18 2011 leaving the studio, Ne-Yo on August 23, Ishi and Freddy Wexler on August 28, January 16 2012 with Dave Clauss and his showgirl Olgui Chirino, February 29 with LMFAO, Akon, RedOne and again with DJ Afrojack on March 5, 2012, 25 and March 26 with Fernando Garibay (co-producer of the song "Born This Way "by Lady Gaga) and Sia Furler in Los Angeles. In these days, always in Los Angeles, in the "Westlake Studio Records" with The Runners, James Royo, Wynter Gordon, Shea Taylor. Shakira also appears to work with other artists such as Dave Clauss, Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco, Tiesto, Gustavo Celis and will.i.am.[1][6] From May 1 to May 3, 2012, Shakira worked with artist and producer Skrillex in her studio in Barcelona, Spain on further material for the album. Following the release of "Get It Started", Shakira stated she was beginning to "prepare their fans" for the new material.[1]

Composition

[edit]

"There are no boundaries. The styles merge and live among them. I love trying new sounds, experimenting with different musical styles and enjoy both making and listening to other artists. From rock and pop, to Arabic music, salsa, Andean music, music techno, disco, etc."

—Shakira during an interview with El Espectador.[5]

According to her new manager Jay Brown, the album could contain about 10 tracks of audio,[1] which most would consist of dance beats and Dance,[1] Techno and Electro-pop, he also pointed out that the album could contain collaborations with Ne-Yo and will.i.am.[7][6] Shakira said during an interview with Rolling Stone that this stage of her life is "inspired by dance music and world affairs."[2] Another song reported to be on the album is titled "Zodiac Lover" which is reportedly produced by RedOne. It is said that the reason for having 10 songs on the album is to stop listeners from skipping any.
