Dr. Shafi Mohammad Tareq is a Bangladeshi academic who served as the Professor of the Department. of Environmental Sciences, Jahangirnagar University from February 1999 to until today.

Summary of Career[edit]

Dr. Tareq was born in Jhalokati District, Barisal, Bangladesh. He has completed his B.Sc (Honors) and M.Sc. (Masters) in Chemistry from Jahangirnagar University in the year of 1995 and 1996, respectively. He obtained M.S. from Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and awarded D.Sc. from Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Nagoya University, Japan. Dr. Tareq also completed Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) from the University of Nottingham and become a fellow of higher education academy, UK. In his early career, he worked as a Japanese Society for Promotion of Science,(JSPS) postdoctoral fellow at Nagoya University and the University of Shiga Prefecture. He also worked as a founder faculty member and chair of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Jahangirnagar University and adjunct faculty at the University of Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Dr. Tareq worked as a visiting researcher in the University of Shiga Prefecture and Hokkaido University, Japan. He also worked as a commonwealth academic fellow at the University of Birmingham, UK. Recently, he worked as an associate professor at the School of Bioscience, the University of Nottingham. He has published significant papers on arsenic pollution in groundwater of Bangladesh and Nepal as well as paleovegetation and climate changes in tropical and sub-tropical areas. He got a very prestigious Bangladesh Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Science BAS-TWAS young scientist gold medal, 2013[1] for his outstanding contribution to national science and technology. Dr. Tareq enlisted as Fellow (FRSC) and Charted Environmentalist (CEnv) in Royal Chemical Society, UK. To date, he has been published more than sixty papers in refereed journals (with total citation more than 1240 and h-index 16) and contributed several chapters in books published by international publisher like Elsevier and Springer. He presented his research in many international conferences in Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. His contribution to lignin molecular biogeochemistry published as a book titled "Lignin Molecular Biogeochemistry: Principles and Practices[2]" from international publisher, USA. Currently he is working as a professor of the department of Environmental Sciences, Jahangirnagar University
