Šarlatán
Hello Vejvančický, User:GuillaumeTell has created an article for Pavel Haas' opera Šarlatán. The reference on the page is a thesis written about the opera: Pavel Haas: Šarlatán, Kapitoly ke genezi a recepci opery. When you have a moment, would you mind reviewing the thesis to see if there is any relevant information there for the Wikipedia article. Best regards, Hrdinský 〒 06:38, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Czech painters
Thanks! Well, I added to the List of Czech painters believing that User:Ser Amantio di Nicolao would be starting some, it was his interest first, I was helping him. Would be nice to see articles blue linked (eventually). I'll create some more when I can. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:27, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

- I've done a few today. Noticed Jaroslav Čermák (painter) was on your to-do list; you wouldn't fancy expanding it by any chance, would you? That might make a nice DYK. :-) More as I think of them. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:31, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- Beautiful work. It didn't need much tweaking; I did a couple of small things, mainly for flow. I'll dig through my source at home tonight and see if there's anything else worth noting. Thanks very much - wish I was more useful, but my Czech is nonexistent. Jaroslav Čermák the resistance figure I don't know anything about, but he seems like he could be of interest.
- That's a wonderful little source I've found; I've had fun adding a few articles from there over the weekend. I'll try to find a few more, mainly people without equivalent articles (there appear to be a few in there...there's even one who has absolutely no profile online, near as I can tell.)

DYK for Ladislav Žák
On 30 October 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Ladislav Žák, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. Czech photography
Your input here tells me that you're the kind of editor I, as unqualified creator of articles on Karel Cudlín and Markéta Luskačová, like to meet. (If you could add anything to either of those, I'd be most grateful!) Incidentally, my latest enterprise (as described in the bottom-most section of this talk page) may interest you. -- Hoary (talk) 07:10, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for the work on Karel Cudlín.
- A small point, but even when the article on a publisher does exist (e.g. Thames & Hudson), I tend to avoid such links within lists of books (of which my latest is the one here). That's because I find them curiously distracting. But perhaps this is just me. -- Hoary (talk) 23:42, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delayed answer, I was totally busy in last days. Thanks for your work on Karel Cudlín and Markéta Luskačová, Hoary - the articles are fine and informative, I don't think you're "unqualified" :) Cudlín is one of my favourite photographers (I own the book published by Torst). He, together with Viktor Kolář, Jindřich Štreit and others, represents an interesting and original direction in the Czech photography; they began documenting Czech society in the vanished communist era and they all continue their work in the new democratic conditions. I admit that I like more their earlier works (perhaps a kind of nostalgia on my side :)) It's nice and unusual to meet an interested person here - the last good article I've found was Miroslav Tichý - a very interesting personality and recent "involuntary star" of the Czech art photography. See also User_talk:CliffC#I've noted that Miroslav Tichý.., if you are interested. I created only one photo-related article: Vilém Heckel, but I plan to write more, i. e. Emila Medková, Vilém Reichmann, Dagmar Hochová (to name the best). I understand your concern with linking publishers, I just wanted to point out that Torst is an important and notable publisher of art books in the Czech Republic. Recently, they made a fantastic and professional edition of Sudek's works: [1]. "The Window of My Studio" is one of the greatest cycles ever made, the "poetry" that I like most :) You can see an example here (the quality of reproductions is bad..) OK.. Enough talking.. I'll look at Luskačová. Keep up the good work , Hoary. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 09:10, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind message, Hoary. Unfortunately, I know a little about technical side of photographing, for me it is an interesting art genre :) Thanks for the clean up at Markéta Luskačová, the article looks better now. I have more for you: Flexaret (one of my older articles), Jindřich Štreit (my newest attempt, I'll continue tomorrow). I hope it could be interesting for you. Would you mind to check/fix my creaky English? Best regards. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 17:40, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Right then, I'd like to start with some boring little bibliographical questions about the article on Štreit. (For which I thank you. I don't know his work, but a good rule of thumb is that anything exhibited by Amber/Side is worthwhile. I'll investigate.) The questions are very simple, really, but unfortunately in order to ask them I have to use a lot of bytes.
Worldcat tells me of Josef Moucha, Helena Musilová, and Eva Marlene Hodek, Fotogenie identity: pamět̕ české fotografie / The photogeny of identity: The memory of Czech photography (Prague: Pražský dům fotografie, 2006; ISBN 8086970124).
(It may be better to say that Moucha, Musilová, and Hodek are the editors, or that all are contributors but that Moucha is the editor. I can't read Czech so I'm guessing.)
Surely "Prague House of Photography" is the name in English of Pražský dům fotografie; let's not quibble about which to use. And perhaps Kant is publishing it on behalf of Pdf, just as (for example) Yale University Press publishes books on behalf of the photo museum at Houston.
However, the article seems to imply that this book is "in: Dufek, Antonín: Vesnice je svět (The Village is a Global World), Prague, Arcadia 2003. Preface."
I guess you mean that what Dufek is quoted as saying is from Dufek's preface to his own Vesnice je svět, via Fotogenie identity: pamět̕ české fotografie. Is this right? If so, perhaps:
- . . . ; quoting Antonín Dufek's preface to his Vesnice je svět (The Village is a Global World; Prague, Arcadia 2003; ISBN _______)
or of course the other way around:
- Antonín Dufek, preface to his Vesnice je svět (The Village is a Global World; Prague, Arcadia 2003; ISBN _______); quoted in . . .
I looked in WorldCat for this book but couldn't find it. However, I was able to find this quadrilingual book by Štreit (photos) and Dufek (text): Vesnice je svět / The Village is a Global World / Das Dorf ist eine globale Welt / Un village, c'est tout un monde (Prague: Arcadia, 1993; ISBN 8090142354). Perhaps the 2003 book is a new edition or just a reprinting of this.
In the list of references, why "coll."? Is this something like "collective authorship"? If so, sorry but I don't think that this abbreviation is commonly used or much understood in English. (If a book has many authors, of course it's fine to name the first one and say "et al." for the rest.)
Excuse the boringness of my questions. More importantly, I'm glad that you wrote an article on Štreit and I look forward to looking at his work. (More on Tichý and others a bit later.) -- Hoary (talk) 23:48, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
- PS I wondered what books by Štreit might be available and so looked him up in Worldcat. Aaargh! Even granted that Czech museums seem unusually keen to get ISBNs even for smallish catalogues, his printed output is extraordinary. I tried but gave up soon in exhaustion. ¶ This is in fact typical of my approach to photographer bios. I tend to think that an array of books with clickable ISBNs is helpful but also will make the bio look more AfD-proof, so I do that. At this point I may already be too exhausted to proceed further (examples: Bukō Shimizu and Yoshino Ōishi). Energy permitting, I may add exhibitions and permanent collections; independent sourcing for all of that (e.g. Homer Sykes) leaves me completely knackered. (Could it be that I should reconsider my operating procedure?) -- Hoary (talk) 01:20, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- I see you're continuing the bibliographic work. You're probably hating me for having started it! ¶ Štreit's work interests me. If I were to order one of his books that's fairly easily available new (at least in the Czech Republic), isn't wildly expensive, and contains some English text, which would you recommend? ¶ You've reminded me that the Flexaret is from Meopta. So is the Opema. Its practicality and quality aside, the Opema is a pretty camera. -- Hoary (talk) 08:44, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- No problem, I've expanded the list of publications with the most important titles. I think the Jindřich Štreit: Fotografie 1965-2005 / Jindřich Štreit: Photographs 1965-2005. Prague: Kant, 2006. ISBN 8086970051 is the best choice. It is a well arranged book containing his most important works (text also in English). Unfortunately it seems that the book is sold out :(
- Thanks for your suggestions and clean up, I've fixed the citations accordingly. Fotogenie identity: pamět̕ české fotografie is a catalogue published both by Kant and Pražský dům fotografie, it is better to include both the publishers. As for the Dufek's book (The Village is a Global World), I've added incorrect date of publishing, thanks for correcting me. I also fixed the "coll."/"et al." problem. Excuse my insufficient knowledge of English citation standards. You can find a comprehensive list of literature and exhibitions at the Štreit's official website (Institute of Creative Photography) (the link is listed in the article).
- I'll look at Plicka today. I know the name, he was an important Czechoslovak ethnographer. Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 08:55, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, a non-reliable source in English tells me this. For decades, one of his photo books of Prague was in my parents' house, and I get the impression that he was, in effect, the CSSR's official export photographer for picturesque Prague. This is probably not a reputation that he would have wanted, and indeed I've read hints here and there that at one time he was regarded as daringly innovative. Anyway, his prominence seems to have plummeted (justly or unjustly), and this tends to interest me. -- Hoary (talk) 09:11, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, he is known for his photos of Prague, but I can remember mainly his fantastic film Zem spieva (1933) (I've seen it years ago during one of my university lessons). You are right, his prominence have plummeted (although some of his works are still re-published in the Czech Rep.) - I think the work is a bit "archaic" and uninteresting for today's people. I'll try to find out more about him. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 09:25, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- Both the Czech and the Slovak WP articles on him seem to have been done with some care, so he seems to be of some interest.. No rush for him, though: you've put so much time into Czech photographers in the last couple of days that you should take a breather before tackling a Slovak (I think) one. -- Hoary (talk) 11:51, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- I have a precious bit of free time now and I like this kind of activity. I'm relaxing. Moreover, I found a good and encyclopedic source, and I have a good collaborator. What could I wish more? It's been a long time since my last collaboration with an interested editor (on Reflex, I think (?)). I'm used to work hard in real life[citation needed] and this is a great joy and a good chance to improve my English and this project. I'll try to explain the Czecho/Slovak issue in the article. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 12:08, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

[To the left.] What an extraordinary man he turns out to have been. And how incurious or odd people are, to let somebody such as this sink into obscurity (of course without an article) but yet create articles (or anyway stubs) on hundreds of nobodies such as these. Well, he's a "dead white European male" who was involved in music that didn't have percussion machines or elaborate hair-dos and lighting, and who took photos in B/W that didn't show celebs or flesh, so I suppose his obscurity isn't surprising. ¶ I'd like to see some of his ethnographic work. (To be honest the idea of ethnographic photography doesn't fill me with excitement, but the east European examples I've seen by I. K. Inha (still no article here!) and the precocious Johannes Pääsuke have been stunningly good.) -- Hoary (talk) 00:39, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, he was a real "Renaissance man", and he succeed in almost every area that he touched! I quite agree with you, I too don't like the 16 years old idol show "stars", (and a lot of other similarly "famous" people) and their alleged notability, but today's world has a little respect for real values. I'm a lucky person - usually I ignore this crap without commenting, there's a lot of people who enjoy working on it :) The photos by Inha and Pääsuke are wonderful, this is the kind of photography I like most, as the ethnography (especially that of my country) fill me with excitement :) I would like to nominate the articles (Štreit and Plicka) for DYK, but the venue seems to be affected by a recent wiki hysteria, and I don't want to be involved in a dispute with some wiki politicians/exorcists/clans/brotherhoods who enjoy the eternal unproductive blabbing visible in every corner of this project. Of course, the articles are not prefect, but I think they're quite informative and interesting. Thank you for polishing my creaky English, working with you was a pleasure for me and I hope we'll meet again. Let me know if needed. Best regards, Hoary. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 11:07, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Not this week though. ¶ I haven't been paying any attention to any recent excitement at DYK; in the past I've come up with articles with sourced facts that I thought were pretty interesting, but one look at the bureaucratic rigmarole required to enter for DYK had my eyes glazing over. Karel Plicka
A long time ago, I decided that cs:Karel Plicka richly deserved an article here too. I laboriously (if perhaps not accurately) created a list of his books:
- City of baroque and gothic: 208 photographs. London: Lincolns-Prager, 1946. (in English) Views of Prague.
- Prague en images / Prague in photographs. Prague: Orbis, 1950. (in Czech, Russian, French, and English)
- Prague in photographs / Prague en images. Prague: Artia, 1954. (in English and French)
- Praga regia: Das königliche Prag. Royal Prague. Prague royale. Prague: Orbis, 1955. (in Czech, German, English, and French)
- Prague in photographs. Prague: Artia, 1961. (in English, French, and Russian)
- Prague: The golden city. London: Hamlyn, 1965. (in German, French, English, and Spanish)
- 7 procházek Prahou: fotografický pru̇vodce městem. Prague: Orbis, 1966. (in Czech)
- Levoča: klenotnica umeleckých pamiatok. Martin: Vydavatel̕stvo Osveta, 1980. (in Slovak)
- Československo. Prague: Orbis, 1974. (in Czech)
- Eva Studeničová spieva: z piesňovej zbierky Karola Plicku. Martin: Vydatelʹstvo Osveta, 1984. (in Slovak)
I then started to work on an introductory paragraph, at least -- but quickly discovered that there was nothing citable on the web in a language that I happened to understand. (I was tempted simply to translate fr:Karel Plicka, but it's completely unsourced and I despair when people translate from junk ja:Wikipedia articles into English.) So I gave up and eventually forgot all about it.
Well, here you are, if it interests you; and if it doesn't, I won't mind at all. -- Hoary (talk) 04:13, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- I started the article Karel Plicka. Feel free to comment at the article's talk page. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 11:48, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Onto topic, then. I saw the addition and wondered: should it be there? Having wondered a couple of hours, I'm still not sure, so I'll think it through in writing... While I rather like the idea of making such difficult music more freely available, and playable, by persons who'd find transposition difficult, I can't see how that adds to knowledge or understanding of the man and his music. It's someone else's use of his music; an adaptation. And it's self-published. On balance, I can't see how its inclusion can be justified. It might be worth posting something apologetic to the user's page, then reverting, with an edit summary that invites discussion. Sorry, this isn't much help, is it? Haploidavey (talk) 18:33, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I had a look around and followed all the links. Yes, it's a blog; and we don't link to blogs, as far as I know, unless the blog-owner is the subject of the article. I'll revert, and send a note to the poster's page. Best, Haploidavey (talk) 18:50, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, it's a matter of proportion. No need to reach for blogdom when good quality sources suffice. Reverting well-intentioned links becomes a regular chore on some articles. Housekeeping, if you like. I see you've a fine co-editor (above and via your links on my page) but if I need a break from things Romanoid, I'll come to your door. Bloody Romans. I have to admit, it's obsessive. You dig and you dig. You end up with an increasing hole, and a much bigger spoil-heap beside it, filled with endlessly tantalising half-fossils, little gems and sundry bits of what might have been bedrock. Or not.
- Speaking of which - I have to admit, I tend to leave the personal housekeeping to look after itself, and need to be stung into action by disapproving looks; this is just as well, because as we all know, the housekeeping doesn't actually look after itself at all. Strange mounds of debris accumulate in corners. Balls of fluff accumulate hither and yon, inconveniently not guite out of sight. As for the kitchen floor... And I'm sure none of it's mine. Still, it's splendid that you took over. I hope all continues well on the grandmother front. As for the psoriasis; well, it's a bit of a sod, but it might be a family trait.
- Seems like you've added General Building to your skill-store 'cos of the economic slump? I've done much the same kind of work at various times - multiple careers, hum - which included roofing, leadwork, bricklaying, downpipes and guttering, casting and formwork (cills and lintols) plastering and whatnot. If you're after a general term, "general building" would cover it, especially if you're dealing with repairs. In Britain, we used to have an enormous range of specialised apprenticeships in these things; you called yourself whatever you trained as. We've fewer now. Haploidavey (talk) 15:13, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- Loved your reply! You standing among the dirty dishes, burdened with cruel names. Ah, the "constructive criticism" of those who love us... Haploidavey (talk) 16:40, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

A tale of Hoffmann
Things were very quiet in Moravian architecture, and so: this, as a small token of thanks for your photographic work. (I happened to have the elegantly designed booklet on the house on my shelf.) -- Hoary (talk) 15:29, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- It is a good addition and a nice house, it reminds me remotely of the South Bohemian Rustic Baroque (' in Czech) [2]. Did you see this image? I like Hoffmann's work, it is an interesting and original bridge between the old and new architecture, encompassing Art Deco, Jugendstil, newborn modernism, and much more. I think I can find some books about him (both in Czech and in English), so I'll look for some details tomorrow. Thanks Hoary. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 17:28, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
I hadn't thought of looking in Commons. My booklet has more material I could use, and the web page I cited is very informative. Indeed, there's easily a whole article's worth. On the other hand there are only so many days in the week (and so many years in a lifetime). -- Hoary (talk) 15:15, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Dear Vejvančický, thank you for your kind offer to help with cleaning up this article. I've trimmed it right down and am working on tidying it up a bit in my user space: (User:Msrasnw/Suzan Bushnaq). No sadly I can't read arabic - I did about 10 hours worth of studying it 20 years ago and remember absolutely nothing - but google translate produces something sufficient for verification - if not full comprehension. I have written on the author of the page's talk page just to let them know first - before I replace it with my small version - but am surprised people haven't just deleted lots of the promo stuff - but many seem to prefer deletion to editing. Best wishes (Msrasnw (talk) 22:32, 11 November 2010 (UTC))

prosba
While I share some of you concerns about this article, I disagree that it meets the critera for which you proposed it's deletion. If youshould wish to nominate this under either PROD or AfD, I would not object. VERTott 17:02, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, the procedures are important, but the reliability of our content is in my opinion more important. My question is still the same: Are you planning to improve the article? I already started, but I'm not an expert in this field. I'm asking because the article was unacceptable for Wikipedia and I'm curious to know what did you plan to do with it? Hello Vejvančický, You had a problem with my contribution I did on Mirek Topolánek's page. I agree it's not right to write that something seems to be. I am just sad that even wikipedia can't be trusted. When the sources that are quoted are untrustworthy, the result can't be good, either. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.112.88.150 (talk) 02:31, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
- I assume you refer to the "LUI controversy" (which was Topolánek's "political suicide"). Yes, we must be very careful when citing/translating sources, especially when we write about a highly visible living person. The sources cited must be trustworthy and the information here on Wikipedia must reflect the sources in a correct way. Only this will lead to the better reliability of our project. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 09:45, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
- Well, for news about living people, the sources are usually media. Nobody cared the video was cut and the sentences were out of their context, there was homophobic antisemitic Topolánek in every newspaper. I watched the uncut video released by LUI. It implied something completely different than what was in the news - it implied he was just joking. It was so easy to see the truth! Yet, the reporters just copied some untrustworthy message over and over again. Some people learned Topolánek is a bad guy (well, that was no secret already, but he was not THAT bad). I learned media can't be trusted. The videos FYI: http://pardubice.bloguje.cz/841228-nesestrihane-video-topolanek-pro-lui.php. There is truth somewhere, but it's not always possible to find it in news. --94.112.88.150 (talk) 22:58, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for deleting my page and making me waste staying up until 2 in the morning when I have to get up at 6 for school for nothing. I worked VERY hard on that page. Just because that person doesn't seem to have very good significance in your life doesn't meant they're not important to somebody else. I spent 4 hours trying to figure out this site, just so I could try and put a smile on a sad boy's face. And you ruined it, thank you. It's the only page on here with that name, is it REALLY that big of a deal? I worked so hard just to have that up for about 8 hours. And your English isn't even that good you say! So why do you care!? Not that you care about me or anyone else's feelings, but I hope you know you have made my day the worst and have contributed to me loosing faith in thinking there is good in people. Goodbye. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Withlove.katt (talk • contribs) 20:22, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hi. I'm sorry for your lost work. Please note: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a place where you can write whatever you want. I love a girl and she is really important to me, however, my personal feelings or loves are unimportant for Wikipedia ... and I don't have the need to write about my feelings here. I just go and tell her about it :) Btw, thanks for reviewing my English. I'm still learning. I hope my response is comprehensible. DYK for Lips Tullian

DYK
Thanks for your comments on DYK on Hoary's page. I'm happy to hear you have come to grips with the procedure yourself and have been successful in having so many articles listed. Not surprising: I just read your very well written article on Marie Kudeříková. I must say that this is my third attempt at DYK - the other two failed. It took me quite some time today to understand exactly how to manipulate the stuff and in the end I found it easier to use some of the other recent additions as models rather than trying to follow the confusing instructions. I'm sure they could be improved and attract many more creative users. I have in fact worked with computers since the early 1970s and so if I find this kind of thing difficult, how about all those with no previous experience at all? As for your comment on the hook, I though the Russian vs. American attitude would attract more attention than just citing awards. But thanks all the same. Wel'll see how it goes. - Ipigott (talk) 14:19, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind thoughts. I've also looked at some of the work you've been doing on photography and find it very interesting. I see you've got quite a few new names lined up for articles on your user page. If you need any help, for example with copy editing or whatever, please just let me know. I already help several other people in the same way. One of these days we'll perhaps work together on Czech photography (or Photography in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Czechoslovakia, Austrian Empire, etc., etc., etc....). (Please feel free to reply here for continuity.) - Ipigott (talk) 19:15, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
- It is a good idea to start the article on Czech photography! I own a lot of books and literature and together we could compile a decent article. However, I have to finish one quite volumnious article on modern architecture and I still can't find the time needed for systematic work on such a complex topic. Thanks for offering your help Ipigott, I'll let you know :) Best regards. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 08:20, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- No rush. One thing at a time. It's just that it think it is useful for people to be able to get an overview of the various aspects of culture in each country. I've concentrated mainly on Denmark (art, literature, architecture, photography, music) and have begun to cover Luxembourg too. The article from the Oxford Companion here may be a starting point for Czech photography but for WP it would need to be enhanced by photographs and wherever possible by good articles on the individuals involved. Just let me know when you want to start. Don't hesitate to let me know if there's anything else you think I could help you with. Congratulations on today's DYK. - Ipigott (talk) 11:51, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Need a bit of Czech-language help
While working on expanding Frederick Jelinek, it came to light that apparently the only source for his supposed birth given name is this website. It appears to be some sort of biographical directory, but beyond that it seems to be part of a suite of sites by tiscali.cz, I haven't been able to figure out whether it can be considered a reliable source. Do you think you can help me determine that? Circéus (talk) 01:11, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- Tiscali is not a good source for us - "anyone can edit" there. I think we can use the information of this website, that's a reliable source (Lidové noviny). The article says that Frederick Jelinek was born Bedřich Jelínek in Kladno. His father was a Jewish dentist who died in Theresienstadt. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 07:52, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- Nice. Thank you a lot! If you're interested in a quick collaboration, it appear his wife, Milena Jelinek (née Taborova) might have a claim to notability of her own (though it's harder to vouch for, especially in so far as I can,t search Czech sources), and could make for an very interesting double DYK. Circéus (talk) 08:33, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- I'll try to help you ... To start off, I found two good sources/interviews in Czech: [3], [4]. Milena Jelínková (or Milena Jelinek) wrote the screenplay to the film Zapomenuté světlo. The film was awarded three Czech Lions. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 09:01, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- FWIW, I think the western should be used, since she's resided in the U.S. since the 60s (though of course the Czech form would be mentioned in the first line.). But I should get to work on Frederick first ^_^;;; Circéus (talk) 19:31, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

BTW, regarding Jelinkova, one of my sources says that she was one of nine dissidents "released" (she was not imprisoned at the time, I suspect this refers to being allowed to emigrate) "as an inaugural gift to Kennedy". This would have been sometime in January 1961 or December 1960. Do you think there is any chance of finding out who the eight others were? I have looked into it quickly, but haven't been able to find much. Circéus (talk) 04:41, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Circéus, I don't know who were the other released dissidents, but I think it isn't so important for us. I'll try to find out more if you want. Btw, I created the first draft of the article Milena Jelinek, please see User:Vejvančický/Milena Jelinek. I compared various Czech and English sources and I compiled the basic resume. In my country, she is known as the author of the screenplay for Zapomenuté světlo (Forgotten Light), and her work was noted in association with the theatre play Adina (see the article). Feel free to copy edit/fix possible confusion. You can paste the article to the mainspace when ready. Ask me whatever. Best regards. Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 13:54, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
- I was curious in case they were notable too, but that's my bad tendency to find about a "nerwork" of notable things when I do a biographical article. Circéus (talk) 16:12, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
- In any case, that looks very good. Some of my sources have extra stuff regarding the 1957-1961 period (mostly Hershenson, 1989), and I'll probably add that after moving the article to mainspace. Circéus (talk) 16:27, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Transylvania Massacres
- The improvements look great. The source that I'd located at [5] was pretty good too, I thought. It didn't impress those two guys who seem to want to sweep this under the rug, but it's hard to reason with people who think it rates only a footnote. I've seen that mentality a lot, to the effect of "deaths by _____ (massacre, earthquake, railroad accidents, etc.) are a routine occurrence in other nations". Thanks for standing up to that kind of attitude. Mandsford 00:10, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

- Hello Michael. Yes, I've deleted the article. This project is an encyclopedia, not a business directory. The subjects included here must be notable and the notability must be verifiable by reliable sources. Please, look at the notability criteria for companies. There was no indication of notability in your article, no information other than the name and specialization area of the company + reference directing to Twitter. Additionally, your message suggests that you wrote the article on behalf of the company, which is another problem. Wikipedia is not a forum for advertising or promoting yourself or your company. Editing in an area in which you are personally involved is considered conflict of interest, and it is strongly discouraged here. Please, familiarize yourself with mentioned policies before starting editing here. Thanks for your understanding. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 08:57, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
The Jelineks are launched
All we can do is wait to know whether they'll show up on DYK now... Circéus (talk) 01:10, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
- Aaaaaand, I'd need help again. My next project is Roman Jakobson's first wife, Svatava Pirkova Jakobson. One of my sources says "Her father had been a prominent figure in the first Czechoslovak Republic", but I haven't been able to find anything about that (the only czech source I found seems to only take stuff from my english ones). Do you think you might have a look into it? Circéus (talk) 17:14, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
- Excellent work on Frederick Jelinek. Svatava Pírková-Jakobson is an interesting topic and I'll try to help you (...but I'm totally busy now, I hope I'll have time to work on it this weekend). She was Jakobson's second wife, as far as I know. The name of his first wife was Soňa; she later married the Czech composer Pavel Haas. On several occasions I met with their daughter. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 07:54, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
- Wow, that's fascinating! I can't remember where I got the impression that she was his first wife: my sources don't even mention their date of marriage! They really concentrate on her academic work and her life after arriving in the U.S., so details of her European life are either left untold or obscured by her husband's fame. Maybe Roman's New York Time obituary has the info, but I don't have access to it ATM. Circéus (talk) 18:45, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
- As it is, I was mostly hoping for help on her father (I can get a basic bio up with what I have), but any help you want to give will be happily accepted. Circéus (talk) 18:55, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
- They married in 1935 and divorced in 1967 (Jakobson divorced with his first wife on 27 June 1935 and the same year he married Svatava Pírková). Unfortunately, I can't find even the name of her father. I tried various search combinations both in Czech and in English ... without success. Do you know the name? --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 22:09, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
Holy crap. I keep searching, but information on Jakobson's first two marriages simply is not available online. It took me a very long time just to figure out who his third wife was. I'll have to remember to look at some books (maybe Dialogues will have some stuff... I know the Who's Who entry, if we have it at the uni library should have the info) when I come back to Montreal. Happy to meet you again Vejvančický.
This user User:Medicineman84 has greatly displayed uncivil behavior on my talkpage, check through the history of Ghana article and see my contributions and his, this user deliberately deleted Ghana GDP PPP information in Ghana infobox which must be present in every countries infobox, sometimes ago,i brought it back ,and he stiil went ahead and blanked the page today and deleted the vital information provided by imf and he insulted me on my talkpage, look he is dubious,do you know that he hide his USERNAME but i check my history on my talk page and saw that he was the one, read my reply. He wrote without shame STOP EDITING the Ghana page...Check it on my talkpage.Take time and browse through his contribution and see he is dubious by going aroung and blanking pages with useful edits.
1. He is dubious because he conceal his username on my talk page.
2. He is a bad editor because he is discouraging me from editing openly by saying STOP EDITING the Ghana page... without any reason but because of his dubious character,he displayed high degree of uncivil behaviour,he should be sanctioned.thanks Earlymen (talk) 02:38,22 December 2010 (UTC)

Christmas Card
Article titles and diacritics
Happy Christmas, Antonin! I thought you would be the best person to approach with this query, for obvious reasons. Following another of my stupid entanglements with an AfD despite my resolution to keep well away from them, I've become involved in referencing and reformulating articles about several Bosnian volleyball internationals. The original creator created these articles without using diacritics. Mostly this is relatively unimportant but in the case of Ermin Lepić the original article title "Ermin Lepic" is inconsistent with the correct form of the player's name. If I create a new article with a title including the diacritic, transfer the text and then create a redirect from the simple QWERTY title, as I understand it the article history is lost. If I leave the article as it is, he keeps a name that's not his real name, and if I create a Redirect for the name with diacritic the person entering the correct form will see it fetch up an incorrect form. Do you know about the problem and any preferred solution? Thanks for any advice - it obviously has wider application for other existing BiH-related articles. - Excuse me for butting in, but what you do is move the page to its more accurate title. ("Move this page" should be an option offered to you.) -- Hoary (talk) 13:58, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
- I've moved the article and its history to the correct title, it should be OK now. Thanks Hoary, Merry Christmas to both of you. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 14:17, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
Excellent! Thank you both very much, and now I know what to do next time, that's a great help. Enjoy the rest of Christmas, both of you. Opbeith (talk) 14:44, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

why u have deleted shakti kumar wikipedia.........? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nivishakti (talk • contribs) 12:06, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
- It was explained many times on your user talk page: This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. František Fajtl Article
Thank you for rating the František Fajtl article. I am surprised it is a C-Class rating! If there is any help or advice I can give in return somewhere just ask. Appreciate you taking the time to rate František Fajtl. Adamdaley (talk) 19:37, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hello Adam. I just added one letter to the article's talk page, you certainly did more than me. The article is well written and informative, but it lacks inline citations, which is quite important for direct identification of sources and strengthens the credibility of the information. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 07:16, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
DYK for Milena Jelinek
On 31 December 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Milena Jelinek, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the help of Cyrus Eaton, Jerome Wiesner and Nikita Khrushchev was needed so that Frederick and Milena Jelinek could marry? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
