Notice of Dispute resolution discussion

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard regarding a content dispute in which you may have been involved. Content disputes can hold up article development, therefore we are requesting your participation to help find a resolution.

Guide for participants

If you wish to open a DR/N filing, click the "Request dispute resolution" button below this guide or go to Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/request for an easy to follow, step by step request form.

What this noticeboard is:
 • It is an early step to resolve content disputes after talk page discussions have stalled. If it's something we can't help you with, or is too complex to resolve here, our volunteers will point you in the right direction.
What this noticeboard is not:
 • It is not a place to deal with the behavior of other editors. We deal with disputes about article content, not disputes about user conduct.
 • It is not a place to discuss disputes that are already under discussion at other dispute resolution forums.
 • It is not a substitute for the talk pages: the dispute must have been discussed extensively on a talk page (not just through edit summaries) before resorting to DRN.
 • It is not a court with judges or arbitrators that issue binding decisions: we focus on resolving disputes through consensus, compromise, and explanation of policy.
Things to remember:
 • Discussions should be civil, calm, concise, neutral, and objective. Comment only about the article's content, not the other editors. Participants who go off-topic or become uncivil may be asked to leave the discussion.
 • Let the other editors know about the discussion by posting on their user talk page.
 • Sign and date your posts with four tildes "~~~~".
 • If you ever need any help, ask one of our volunteers, who will help you as best as they can. You may also wish to read through the FAQ page located here and on the DR/N talkpage.

Please take a moment to review the simple guide and join the discussion. Thank you!

ACC

Requested ACC perms per WT:Help desk § ACC needs help!. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 18:33, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

AlanM1, thank you for interest in the account creation process. I have verified your Identification [1] and I have approved your request, welcome to the team. You may now access the interface here. Before you do so, please read the account creation guide and our username policy thoroughly to familiarize yourself with the process. You should also join us on IRC #wikipedia-en-accounts connect (please go here #wikipedia-en-accounts-unreg connect to get setup) where a bot informs us when new account requests come in and to get any advice on requests as well as the mailing list. Please note that we have implemented a policy of zero tolerance on mishandled requests, and that failure to assess correctly will result in suspension. I would like to emphasize that it is not a race to complete a request, and each one should be handled diligently and thoroughly. Currently you are allowed to create up to six accounts per day, although you won't be able to create an account with a similar name to that of another user; these requests are marked "Account Creator Needed" by the bot and "Flagged user needed" on the interface. However, if you reach the limit frequently, you can request the account creator permission at WP:PERM/ACC. Please keep in mind that the ACC tool is a powerful program, and misuse will result in your access being suspended by a tool administrator. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for participating in the account creation process. Again welcome! Mlpearc (powwow) 17:23, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

I just came acorss your query in IRC. I apologize, your account needs to be enabled by a developer, this is a temporary issue, we hope :P. I will notify you here when this is done. Sorry for the delay. Mlpearc (powwow) 19:25, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
AlanM1, your ACC account is now active, I have also approved your subscription request to the mailing list. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask any team member. Mlpearc (powwow) 23:32, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

re "remember me doesn't work" on Help desk (16 March)

Apparently you've been having the same problem as I've been having with logging in and the "remember me" checkbox? Rourke (talk) 21:07, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Funny you should mention it. I was just about to go back and post about it at VPT. It's been about 2 weeks since I've had to log in – like they fixed it. Of course, my browser has been running this whole time – I just hibernate the machine between sessions – but that never used to keep it from requiring me to log in every day or two. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:29, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, they haven't fixed it for me. I just re-posted about it on the Help Desk again. PS, what's VPT? Rourke (talk) 20:38, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
Are you keeping the browser open, or closing it between "sessions"? VPT is WP:VPT. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 00:43, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Ah, no, I've never checked WP:VPT before until today -- I'll see if there's an answer there later today. And it's both -- sometimes I close the browser immediately after logging out, sometimes I open a new tab, sometimes I just jump to another tab already opened. And it's still a problem after all this time. Rourke (talk) 12:02, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

A couple of weeks ago, it was broken for a few days again, but I noticed that the "remember me" box was unchecked when I had to log in again. I haven't had to log in again since checking it that time, and I've even closed the browser several times. I expect that, if it doesn't work for you, it's something related to the cookie(s) on your machine getting deleted/expired/modified or something. I'm not sure exactly how the process works, and didn't get an answer when I asked. I've got a number of cookies that are sent when posting this reply, including:

 • userbuckets:...
 • mediaWiki.user.sessionId:...
 • mediaWiki.user.id:...
 • enwikiUserName:...
 • enwikiUserID:...
 • enwiki_session:...

—[AlanM1(talk)]— 18:52, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

OK, AlanM1, I'm sorry I haven't replied to this in a while but it's still a problem for me. The only thing I know about cookies is what they are -- I don't understand that bulleted list you posted. What do you think I should try next? Rourke (talk) 23:33, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, but without further understanding of how it works (which I don't have), I can't provide much. Just make sure whatever your security software is (including security settings in your browser), it is allowing cookies to be used by wikipedia in your browser. You might also try a different browser. I use Firefox and am happy with it (and it works in this regard as well). —[AlanM1(talk)]— 02:46, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
I checked Firefox's settings, went to Privacy, found the section on cookies. I was deleting my cookies after every session, or something (I still have a list of cookies, so I guess it didn't delete them all?) Anyway, I changed the settings to not delete cookies "until they expire." I'm not sure, but I think this is what the problem was. Sorry for bugging you about it and thank you for your replies. Hello AlanM1. You recently applied for a Wikimedia IRC cloak, but it looks like you forgot to register your nickname first. Could you please log on to IRC and do:
/msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <email>
where <password> is a password of your choice and <email> is your e-mail address? After you do that, please follow the instructions that are e-mailed to you to confirm your e-mail address. When you're done with that, I just need you to confirm your cloak request:
/msg MemoServ send wmfgc IRC cloak request
After you finish all of that, I'd be happy to get you a cloak. :-) If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my Meta talk page. Barras talk 11:46, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Template:Marriage

As you perhaps saw, the TFD for Marriage got closed as "no consensus". After examining the way this template works, I've proposed removing many of the parameters that many of the TFD participants found unnecessary, problematic, objectionable, etc. The proposal is in the "Removing parameters" section of Template talk:Marriage; would you please go there and offer your opinions? I apologise for the boilerplate style of writing; I'm doing my best to notify all participants in the TFD equally, so I'm copy/pasting the same thing to everyone's talk page regardless of how they voted. Account creator topicon

Hi Alan, I noticed on your user page that you are displaying an account creator topicon. However you don't have the WP:Account creator user right, which is what that topicon is for (not just having access to the ACC interface). Given that, you should probably remove the topicon until you have account creator user rights. Regards, Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 05:59, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Done That dichotomy is sure strange. There really should be a different name, like Manual Account Creator. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 06:35, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

You said this section needed work. I wrote most of it, and all I can say is that each time I read an article on the topic in Broadcasting & Cable online, I would add to the article. It's not ideal, I admit, but all the information is important.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 21:32, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Actually, I wrote the HTML comment "--Another section in extreme need of a trim --AlanM1--", but did not add the hatnote – it was added later here. Note also that other editors have worked on the section extensively, making similar comments in the edit summaries as they broke apart some of the sentences and paragraphs. I contend, though, that the level of detail in the section is still too high, resulting in WP:TLDR for all but the most dedicated reader.
A more effective style, if you really want to convey the minutia of who started what service when (for which I still dispute the necessity), might be a timeline representation of some sort. A table with date, carrier, call sign (if any), and description, would be far more accessible than the wall of text that is there now. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 02:00, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
I was surprised when I saw complaints about the lack of paragraphs in the history, because it does look so much better with paragraphs. I don't know what I was thinking before. I should probably have a second look at whether some things can be moved. In another article about the evolving technology, I found it was possible to communicate the information in the articles about the individual TV stations and not lose anything.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:00, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
When I get time, I can probably move some of the references to individual TV stations into their own articles. If those links don't work I'll have to be at a library to have free access to the articles.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 20:40, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
Some of the D.C. stations already had details on the test and on their mobile DTV service in their articles. I added information about the test to each article and took out the list from the main article. I think this works. It's a very small first step.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 20:25, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

TOC templates

As I said on my Talk page, your approach to List TOC Letters makes more sense than mine.

I have just implemented in its sandbox. The code looks crazy with all those #switch statements (since #expr does not support strings), but it seems to work. I just don’t know whether it does so efficiently.

Do you think we should (re)merge both templates? We would remove my icon solution (with first/last/next/prev/base parameters) and keep your u1–4 and z1–4 parameters as well as my first/last letter parameters. — Christoph Päper 14:13, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

While the letter range is easier to add for the editor, it doesn't handle the cases where some letters should not exist, or numbers/symbols in addition to letters. Wouldn't it be better to have the flexibility at the expense of a little extra work for the editor (i.e. to iterate each choice)? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 00:53, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
I've merged my changes into the live template, documented them, and implemented it in the three color list articles. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 12:46, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

TemplateData

Hey AlanM1

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

I have verified all airports where I used the coordinates by looking at the airport in Google and getting the coordinates from Google. All the airports where I used the coordinates are actually really there. I maintain the database at Landings myself, and I have looked at some 40,000 airports over the last 10 years to verify coordinates, so I am sure that all these coordinates are as accurate as Google is. Date formatting at Elmore Leonard

You were incorrect to invoke the date format consistency rule -- before I revised every citation, there was no consistent format. I established it and you have unfortunately "broken" consistency with your edit. I am not going to make any edits which contravene your edits as I do not have any feeling of ownership over the piece nor feel strongly things _must_ be one way or another; rather, I am pointing out my opinion of your date formatting revisions. I did take pains to look back to the VERY first introduction of dates into citations ... which came quite late in the life of the article ... and compared that to what had transpired since, which was why I made a wholesale change to something consistent ... albeit not to everyone's liking (no edit seems to ever please everyone). Regards --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 00:21, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

@Ceyockey:: I'm not in the habit of changing date formats either, so I did look up policy before doing so. I only did it while doing other edits on the article and probably should have talked to you first. Thanks for coming here without reverting first.
 1. WP:STRONGNAT, bullet 1: Articles on topics with strong ties to a particular English-speaking country should generally use the more common date format for that nation. Leonard is the quintessential American author.
 2. WP:DATERET, bullet 1: If an article has evolved using predominantly one format, the whole article [emphasis mine] should conform to it, unless there are reasons for changing it based on strong national ties to the topic or consensus on article talk. To me, whole article includes captions, citations, ELs, etc. Specifically because of this, there was significant discussion over whether, and an exception created, to allow accessdate and archivedate to differ, using YYYY-MM-DD, since that format had become prevalent for those fields.
 3. At this rev, there were 2 MDY-format cites, 1 DMY-format cite, and 15 other undated cites – technically more MDY than DMY. Even if you discount this to "no existing format", WP:STRONGNAT should apply in choosing a format. I choose DMY when writing an article about, or putting the first dates in, subjects with strong ties outside the U.S.
As an experienced international business software developer, I've spent a great deal of time dealing with money, date, and other cultural differences, getting them "right" for the intended user/audience. If I have a bias, it's toward YYYY-MM-DD for technical and logical reasons, though I realize that trying to impose it is a non-starter. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 02:04, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Ambassadors of the United States may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
 • |Ukraine ||Ref||Geoffrey R. Pyatt] ||Kiev || August 2013
