Happy Nineteenth First Edit Day!

Hey, Ancheta Wis. I'd like to wish you a wonderful First Edit Day on behalf of the Wikipedia Birthday Committee!
Have a great day!

January 2023

Greetings for the new year. I've seen your recent footer addition to 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine of 5Kb and am wondering if you have seen that the article is currently approaching 400Kb in size which seems little large. The invasion article here could be shortened somewhat by creating sibling pages for the Phase one of the Invasion and also for the Phase Two of the Invasion; the data in these sections has not changed for several months now. Phase Three on counterattacks and the annexations of the 4 oblasts would be kept in the current article. Would that shorten the article? ErnestKrause (talk) 15:38, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Nice edits in the Foreign involvement section from you. The article has now expanded to over 400Kb, and its likely time for thinking about bulking down the article as has been done in the past. If you do not like the option above where I mentioned splitting pages for Phase I and Phase II of the invasion, then possibly you could consider a page split for the section you are editing at this time and call it something like "2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine foreign involvement" or something like that. If you prefer, then I could do the split for you though I didn't want to interrupt your edits in progress. Do you haver a preference for the page split for purposes of bulking down the article currently over 400Kb in size? ErnestKrause (talk) 21:31, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
@ErnestKrause Thank you. It would be fine with me if you performed the split, and titled it. That way the voice remains consistent. I could work on the summary sentences in the article, especially taking care to mention the efforts of Ukraine's backers to keep its sovereignty intact. (For example the lack of preconditions in the aid, etc.) -- Ancheta Wis   (talk | contribs) 23:01, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
It should be done now; you might want to look in on it to see if its ok. Nice going on all those additions you have made, and you should be able to continue on the new page split article which I've linked from the main page. ErnestKrause (talk) 18:31, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

License tagging for File:M87blackHoleAccretionDiskSharpenedByCorrelations-s800-c85.webp

Thanks for uploading File:M87blackHoleAccretionDiskSharpenedByCorrelations-s800-c85.webp. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 12:30, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi Ancheta Wis. I've added a description to the file, making sure that the paper and the authors are clearly linked. It turns out there is a statement at the bottom of the first page of the paper where the images were published that says Original content from this work may be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. Any further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the title of the work, journal citation and DOI. So I've added that instead of the link to the publisher's statement at its website.

You added that the image must be kept locally as well as uploaded to Commons? Is there a particular reason for this. Usually images that can go on Commons are there so that other Wikipedia languages can use them too. StarryGrandma (talk) 21:50, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the CC-by-4 note. I will delete the 'keep local' because you are keeping an eye on it. --Ancheta Wis   (talk | contribs) 22:03, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

File source problem with File:FortWalkerNamesake.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:FortWalkerNamesake.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Ирука13 14:06, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on William L. Thigpen requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.vassarhurt.com/where-are-they-now/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:20, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
