At Final Resolution
- Eric Young defeated Sheik Abdul Bashir to win the TNA X Division Championship. The Management Director of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), Jim Cornette, stripped Young of the title after the event concluded due to interference from referee Shane Sewell. Cornette immediately set up a tournament afterwards for the X Division Championship to begin on the December 11 episode of TNA Impact!.
- Suicide, played by Frankie Kazarian, a character from TNA Impact the video game, debuted after weeks of promotion.
On the December 8 episode of Raw, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) held the Slammy Awards for the first time in eleven years.
Gene Snitsky was released from his WWE contract on December 11.
John Morrison and The Miz defeated CM Punk and Kofi Kingston at a WWE live event on December 13 to win the World Tag Team Championship.
At Armageddon, Jeff Hardy defeated Edge and Triple H in a Triple threat match to win the WWE Championship, his first World Heavyweight Championship reign in WWE.

Recent wrestling news

On December 22:
- On Raw, Trish Stratus wrestled her first match in over two years in her native Toronto, Canada. She and John Cena defeated Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix in a Tag team match.
- It was reported by World Wrestling Entertainment that Batista was sidelined with a hamstring tear that required surgery.
- Maryse defeated Michelle McCool to win the WWE Divas Championship on an episode of Friday Night SmackDown, which aired on December 26.
On December 26:
- Independent Wrestling Association's Roland Montgomery, known as Rollin' Hard, died at his home in Louisville, Kentucky.
- WWE Divas Champion Maryse dislocated her kneecap at a WWE live event; it is unknown how long the injury will sideline her from in-ring competition.
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) moved Paul Burchill and Katie Lea from the Raw brand to the ECW brand on December 30.
On January 2, U.S. Senator Henry Waxman filed a letter to the Office of National Drug Control Policy requesting a review of professional wrestling's steroid testing and usage.

Recent Professional Wrestling News

On the December 16, 2008 taping of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling's (TNA) Impact!, Consequences Creed and Jay Lethal cashed in Lethal's Feast or Fired World Tag Team Title opportunity and defeated Beer Money, Inc (Robert Roode and James Storm) for the TNA World Tag Team Championship, which aired on January 8, 2009.
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) released Bam Neely, D-Lo Brown, Gavin Spears, Jim Korderas, Kevin Thorn, Matt Cappotelli, Mike Kruel, Mickie Henson, Ron Simmons, Sgt. Slaughter, Tim White, and Val Venis from their contracts on January 9 as part of a budget cut.
TNA reported on January 10 that Christy Hemme had injured her neck, and that she would require surgery. She was scheduled to face Awesome Kong for the TNA Women's Knockout Championship at Genesis; this match was replaced by a Six-woman tag team match.
At TNA Genesis on January 11:
- Alex Shelly defeated Chris Sabin in a tournament final singles match to win the TNA X Division Championship
- Beer Money, Inc. (James Storm and Robert Roode) won the TNA World Tag Team Championship by defeating defending champions, Consequences Creed and Jay Lethal, and the team of Abyss and Matt Morgan in a tag team 3-Way Dance.
- Mick Foley wrestled his first match in TNA; he teamed with Brother Devon and A.J. Styles to defeat Cute Kip and The Main Event Mafia (Booker T and Scott Steiner) in a Six-man tag team hardcore match.
On January 12:
- WWE announced that "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's induction into the Hall of Fame would lead the Class of 2009.
- Jack Swagger defeated Matt Hardy to win the ECW Championship, and his first title in WWE; this title change aired on January 13.
Victoria announced her retirement from professional wrestling, after wrestling her final match in WWE on the January 13 episode of Friday Night SmackDown against Michelle McCool; this episode aired on January 16.
On January 16, Hardcore Holly was released from his WWE contract.
