Maybe you could do it...

Hi there. I filed a bot request (permalink) for a bot to close redundant IfD (and other XfD) sections. You are the only operator, as far as I could determine, who already operates a bot that handles part of IfD, so I just wanted to drop you a line, asking whether you might be willing to integrate this (imho) simple task into your current BJBot. But I do not want to cause any stress, so if you haven't got the time or if you can't be bothered, no problem. I just thought it won't hurt to ask ;-) Regards SoWhy 12:33, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Should this category be renamed Category:Games developed by Valve Corporation? Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 18:46, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

The convention used in Category:Video_games_by_company is "<Full company name> games". BJTalk 18:47, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the clarification. But do you think Category:Games developed by X Corporation is better format than Category:X Corporation video games? Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 18:49, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Seems to fit more with the wider Wikipedia conventions but I'm not too familiar with categorization. BJTalk 18:52, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Categories

Can I request that you move Category:Half-Life screenshots to Category:Half-Life media? That way I can implement {{media template notice}} and {{media}} on onto the images, making categorisation easier and more conventional. -- Sabre (talk) 23:10, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Urgent: Re Category deletions

Hello, Bjweeks - I just spotted your CFD-closing & deletion of Category:Half-Life 2. I was stunned to see that the CFD had been closed after it had been open for all of 1 hour -- so I wondered who had closed it. Since I had never seen your name before at CFD, I came straight here -- where I was further dismayed to see that you had unilateraly deleted another, related category upon request by the same editor. He at least had taken his initial request to the proper place -- WP:CFD -- but then both of you dispensed with even that formality, and the second category was summarily deleted in a purely private proceeding.

I didn't see any suggestion that either of these categories qualified for Speedy Deletion, so proper procedure would have been to open CFDs for both and then allow them to run for 5 days before closing. As I'm sure you realize having read this far, you um, messed up. What really concerns me is that you're an admin, and yet -- even though you openly said that you're not very familiar with categories -- it seems not to have occurred to you to look into the procedure that's supposed to be followed for deletion, but simply went ahead and deleted them on your own authority.

I hope this was just a momentary lapse of judgement, but no doubt you can see how it raises red flags. You might want to consult with another admin to see what steps (if any) may need to be taken to set things right. In any event, I'm sure you'll familiarize yourself with the rules for CFD now that you're aware of the problem. Regards, Cgingold (talk) 01:33, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

I had no intentions of closing the CFD, I was going to unilaterally delete it myself but I didn't get around to it yesterday. I have been fixing up the Valve categories, that process involved deleting and renaming a few categories. Unless anybody is objecting to the renames I don't see an issue. BJTalk 02:05, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
BJ, if it's alright with you, I'm going to restore these categories and their contents since a user has complained about these out-of-process closings/deletions. Especially with respect to Category:Half-Life 2, I think that Cgingold is correct that we need to let things run its course since it was formally nominated for discussion. Let me know if you have a problem with me doing this. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:12, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
Both have been depopulated, in fact the HL2 category was already depopulated at the time I deleted it. If you want to restore empty categories go right ahead. BJTalk 04:17, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
That's OK; it won't be difficult to restore its previous contents as they were at the start of the CfD. Thanks. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:21, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello. Apparently you opperate BJBot. How could I get permission to use the image? I know personally the editor of the newspaper from which the image comes (Lá Nua). Could I simply correspond with the newspaper and gain (verbal) permission? I am unaware of whether or not the image (as it was published piublicly in a newspaper and online) is copyrighted. Bayan Knights image

The image BK_Cover_choose.png was in use in a page titled "Bayan Knights" I had been creating under superhero teams which for some reason is deleted without reason provided to me. I had attempted to look for it but there's nothing on even the archives. I am presently trying to re-do everything. In addition, I do have permission from the authors/copyright holders because it just so happens I'm one of them. Borgy (talk) 10:11, 27 November 2008 (UTC)GeoffB

Removal of from several articles

I saw you had removed Template:Bots from several articles where I had added it, and was wondering why. I had added it because there are quite a few editors using AWB or other bots to delink and/or reformat dates in articles. Each of those articles has a quoted date within a note that, while accurately quoted, is inconsistent with the established date style for the article, so I added {{bots}} to prevent that from occurring again. If editors that are unlinking dates would be careful when reviewing their changes, edits like that wouldn't be occurring. Regretfully, most date delinkers, from my observations, are processing articles far too fast for any meaningful oversight. — Bellhalla (talk) 00:49, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

{{bots}} only stops a few pages from getting harmed and just masks the problem. If bots or editors making mass edits are not receptive to complaints they should be blocked. BJTalk 01:11, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

When to block a bot or not

Hi there. It's not really relevant to the AN thread, but I was curious to know why you said not to block Cydebot? Was it because you had informed the botop and wanted to let him deal with it? I guess what I'm saying is did it matter whether we waited for Cyde to deal with it, or whether someone blocked to get the malfunction on the record and to save a couple more rollback clicks? I don't think it really mattered that much. Or am I missing something? Maybe it was concern about an incorrect block messing up toolserver stuff? I remember that happening once, and was trying to figure out which boxes to tick and untick, and then I noticed your post at AN, and by the time I had posted there, someone else had blocked anyway! :-) Carcharoth (talk) 00:53, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

I normally ping the bot operator on IRC, if they don't respond in a few minutes I just block it. Cyde quickly responded so there was no point blocking it. Waiting for them to respond on a talk page on the other hand is a Bad Idea. BJTalk 00:57, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Any advice on the IP autoblock thing? Carcharoth (talk) 01:02, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Didn't read that far. :/ Bots should never be autoblocked, ACB is fine to leave on but it doesn't serve much of a point. BJTalk 01:05, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I kind of knew that, but it's nice to have it confirmed. Wonder if that's in WP:BLOCK? Ah, right down the end at Wikipedia:BLOCK#Setting block options. Didn't read that far... :-) Carcharoth (talk) 01:14, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Hey there BJ, I was looking through your bots contribs, and I noticed that it has been editing pages in the User talk: namespace, and I was wondering if it would be possible for the bot to mark all edits that it makes in the User talk namespace as minor as not to trigger the Orange "You have new message" banner. Would this be at all feasible? Thanks and All the Best, --Mifter (talk) 12:50, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

oops

So I went to my user page recently and I had edited a userbox to have The Killers' (band) new album art (for Day & Age) but the image wasn't there. I check the history and BJBot had edited it to not show because it is not a free-use image and Wikipedia has rules against that. Thanks for the heads up, didn't know that.

Anyway, the question: is there a way I can still use that image a different way?

  (  jmh010talk  )   01:21, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Nope, non-free images can't be used anywhere outside of articles. You may want to find a free picture of the band performing or something to that effect. BJTalk 14:33, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Zapproved

BJ--I noticed that you removed a page that I had added for Zapproved. I am not sure why this was done. I have made every effort to respect the posting guidelines. Can you please clarify this situation for me? Thanks, Chris Cbright67 (talk) 00:58, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

WP:WEB is the notability guideline for website, which Zapproved seems to fail. BJTalk 19:29, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your response and clarification. I had created this place as starting point so others could add to it. I believe the site does achieve the levels of notability, but wanted to be careful about not being promotional. I can cite dozens of postings which resulted because of its uniqueness. It fits in the category of List_of_project_management_software. It is a relatively new site, but has thousands of users and is equal to others on that list. It is not my intent to create a promotional listing, but a reference source. Would it be possible to create a draft to have you review before posting? Please let me know. Hey there, Brandon! Happy new Gregorian year. All the best for the new year, both towards you and your family and friends too. I did not take this picture to produce a profit or anything of that sort so I would just like to release it to the general public. Actually, I see you said "This picture was taken by myself as an employee of the Joseph T St. Lawrence Center." Tribal wars

I was surprised to find no article for the online game Tribal Wars. I assumed no one has gotten around to it, so I Goggle-translated the German WP article, cleaned it up and was going to post it when, guess what? Creating the page is locked out! As the AFD from 2007 is out of date, Here are my responses for the 2008 AFD discussion:

  1. Tribal Wars has over 3.4 million users. Not trivial or WP:CSD
  2. Tribal Wars is verifiable and has been mentioned in Wired as well as online sources:galaxy news 30,xweb,browser game digest, mmohub, sling, gamer chicks and other moderated web-news sites.
  3. Is this a WP:BIAS issue?! Tribal Wars has WP articles in 17 other languages; German, Español, Eesti, Suomi, Français, Magyar, Italiano, Latviešu, Nederlands, Norsk (bokmål)‬, Polski, Português, Русский, Srpskohrvatski, Slovenčina, Svenska, Türkçe.
  4. In the month the Tribal Wars article was online for 5 days, it averaged 160 hits a day!. In a completely random sample, only the M 15 rifle averaged higher, by about 100 hits. Psion (comics), Bernard Jenkin, Fredericksburg, M15 rifle, Meg Campbell. Why deny an article users obviously are looking for?

Basically, the guidelines used to keep this page deleted are barely applicable, designed more for 2,000 hit web-comics and such. Keeping the article on the popular game is harmless, deleting it is harmful. You can see my rough version at: User:Knulclunk/Tribal Thanks!--Knulclunk (talk) 06:41, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I'll review this in a few minutes, finishing something up. BJTalk 06:48, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
I will attempt to explain a few of points you mentioned but I invite you to open a deletion review to get a wider input as the article has gone through three different AfDs all resulting in delete, so I don't feel comfortable making the call myself.
  1. This generally isn't an accepted argument in an AfD (see WP:BIG) but it would count as a claim of notability, thus protecting the article from CSD#a7.
  2. The Wired article mention only mentioned the game in passing and the other sources aren't great notability indicators (based on the having their own article test, anyways).
  3. It may very likely be bias but I don't really see a case for systemic bias, the major demographics for Wikipedia editors and players of web games overlap quite a bit.
  4. This is also generally considered to be a flawed argument at AfD (see WP:POPULARPAGE). Notability standards are far different in different areas. Surely many of the articles on websites that get deleted are of more interest to internet readers than small villages in Africa but consensus has favored the latter. BJTalk 08:31, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I put it up for deletion review.

  1. Big counts specifically for the CSD#a7 argument made in the first AFD
  2. Wired article mentions it specifically as one of the 5 examples to "Design a Truly Entertaining Game"; Moderated articles in online game websites seems like a perfect place. Should we not use ARTNews as a source for painters?
  3. Yes bias. Pretty much every non-stub/start article from other WP languages should be translated eventually.
  4. I'm all for low hit-count articles, I have written some myself. But to not allow a high hit-count article about a real world thing seems counter-intuitive.--Knulclunk (talk) 16:46, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Japanese-American history

I must express my dismay with your arbitrary name change for this article's talk page -- redirecting Talk:Japanese-American history to Talk:Japanese American history. At a minimum, this needs discussion; and I can conceive of no circumstance in which I would agree to this kind of change absent a well-sourced argument which helps me understand why the non-hyphenated term is better or preferred.

Frankly, I would have thought that others would be likely to hold somewhat less flexible views than mine. Please restore the page; and indeed, if you still believe this change is worth defending, please amplify the reasons for your point of view so that others can comment. --Tenmei (talk) 09:25, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, forgot to reply to this. I'll have a look in the morning. BJTalk 05:39, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
I took a look at this. There's no really good way to do this, to be honest. Individual queries for each column would be one option, for example:
SELECT
  DATE_FORMAT(log_timestamp,'%Y-%m') as dates,
  COUNT(log_timestamp)
FROM logging
JOIN user
ON user_id = log_user
WHERE user_name = "Angela"
AND log_type = "renameuser"
GROUP BY dates;
You could then use Python to manipulate the data (summing columns and such). Another possible option is to do a straight dump of the logging table for all bureaucrats and former bureaucrats (user_name IN ('WJBscribe', 'Angela', ...)) and then have Python manipulate all of the data itself. Two issues: (1) when comparing the numbers from the query to the numbers on the /crat stat page, some of them didn't match up; (2) things like bot de-flaggings, to my knowledge, can't really be retrieved easily from the database due to the way they're logged. Not sure this is worth the time commitment just for bureaucrat stats. :P Though maybe you could just run each user through Misza's counter? --MZMcBride (talk) 09:17, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Possibly false removal of an image per WP:NFCC#9

Hi. Recently, your bot removed this image from the instructions page for my user script, Wikimark. Could you please advice me how to reinsert the image so that it wont get taken down again, or if it indeed does violate policy, which one and what should I do to make the image compliant, since I've seen such screenshots used on other scripts' instruction pages (for example Wikipedia:FRIENDLY). Block on 139.184.30.132

We have traced recent Wikipedia vandalism to two users who have been interviewed and dealt with according to our Acceptable Use policy. We will shortly be launching an Information Security Awareness campaign which will specifically mention Wikipedia vandalism.

139.184.30.132 is our web proxy; blocking this address blocks all access to Wikipedia account creation and anonymous editing from the University of Sussex. This is causing us problems with re course assignments for medical students who are required to edit pages on cardiovascular disease.

Please will you reinstate account creation from 139.184.30.132. The students will have to learn how to create accounts rather than edit anonymously! We will be monitoring logs to act upon further abuse.

And yet you failed to figure out that editing pages is not related to saving lives. M1N (talk) 16:26, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Apology

I've posted a general apology in my withdrawal statement at the Oversight election page, but I felt that as a contributor you deserve an individual apology too.

It was not my intention to let the election begin without a statement, but an IT gremlin "ate" my first attempt at posting there some hours before the election was to begin and then unforseeable RL issues prevented me from getting back to it until too late. Thank you for your consideration and sincere regrets for wasting your time. --Dweller (talk) 10:23, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Does BJBot see the difference between a "used in" link and a "duplicate file" link?

Hi, I just tried out a toolserver "unused image" search on the all non-free media category and actualy found a few unused non-free files, most of wich appear to have been unused for some time (hard to tell for sure, but most where logos replaced by PNG versions some time ago).

What they all had in common was that they all had a "The following file is a duplicate of this file:" link under the "File links" section. I though maybe that was why they had not been bot flagged as unused. If that is the case the easiest solution would be to just ignore links to the File: namespace when checking if the file is an orphan since use of a non-free file outside the main namespace doesn't "count" anyway. --Sherool (talk) 08:25, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

I've known about this for a while but forgot about it. pywikipedia's parsing of the image page was broken by the duplicate file box. I'll rewrite it in wikitools shortly. BJTalk 14:24, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Buffy DVD image

Feel free to delete File:Buffy DVD (Series).jpg. It's a duplicate of a file already on file. I uploaded it before I released it. Thanks. FaithLehaneTheVampireSlayer 08:15, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Congregation Beth Israel (Scottsdale, Arizona)

Thanks so much for doing that! I have no skill with Photoshop, but I'd be interested in seeing the pictures anyway. I might be able to find someone who could fix them. Jayjg (talk) 21:26, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Ping

Hi! I sent you mail about this: [3] ... please give me a reply when you get a chance, here, or via mail, as I'm not totally sure I see the rationale for the block, and I didn't see anything on the user's page. Could you elaborate? Did this go to ANI and I missed it? Thanks. ++Lar: t/c 20:04, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Lar: How are you involved here? Looking at the editor's recent contributions, the account appears to be doing nothing but trolling (thus the block summary, "This is an encyclopedia"). Am I missing something? --MZMcBride (talk) 20:10, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Just happened to notice it. Then wondered why there didn't seem to be much info on the block itself. Hence my query. Thanks for answering with your view of why... I just now looked at the contributions from February and while one was a bit of an attack, the other five didn't seem that bad to me. Which ones, specifically, did you see as trolling, and why? Were there any warnings given to the user that I missed? Suppressing critics may not be the best approach, even if you don't really appreciate them. (on the other hand this is a project, not a free speech platform, so ya, if there is only negative contribution, I agree, block and move on) ++Lar: t/c 21:23, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

It has now been a day and a half with no reply from the blocking admin, either here, or via email. I propose to unblock since I don't see a clear reason for the block. ++Lar: t/c 04:57, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

He commented here. Seems perfectly reasonable to me. --MZMcBride (talk) 05:58, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Why there but not here? Why not directly answer my question? Seems rather odd. Anyway posting links to WR is not in and of itself disruptive. In fact, doing so is useful if the person is not aware of the discussion. In several of the cases, that seemed to be true. Again, I propose to unblock as I do not see this block as warranted, and will do so, absent better justification, today, and then take it to AN/I for community review. I would rather converse directly with the blocking admin instead of through an intermediary. What exactly is your role here, MZMcBride? ++Lar: t/c 12:17, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
This and this are the very definition of disruptive. I invite a community review at AN/I if you would like to make your case there. BJTalk 03:29, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Take me through how that's disruption, if you would be so kind. I'm afraid I am not seeing it. It may not be the most polite discourse but I don't see it as disruption. ++Lar: t/c 16:54, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
He's trolling for a reaction (and got one [4]), which in my mind is disruptive. If all he is going to do is make rude comments he is a net negative to the project. BJTalk 23:22, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

bother, the bot got it

Replying to this convo, which the bot got to before I did. My thinking is this... the block isn't justified, you haven't made the case. But unless the user decides to appeal it, I'm going to leave it go.

My prediction is that they won't appeal... Instead, it will be used for propaganda value, eventually. But I can't be bothered to pursue this further, there are other windmills to tilt at. Still, when someone is acting in a way that apparently begs for a certain outcome, I tend to advocate giving them a different outcome instead of what they seem to be begging for. Do with that observation what you will. Best wishes. ++Lar: t/c 15:25, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

I have granted Eric's request: [5] with an admonishment to avoid baiting (because on reflection, he was goading Calton a bit... regardless of whether Calton goaded others or not, we don't condone that) and stick to neutral statements. I hope that's satisfactory. I'll watch here, and watch his contributions as well. I'll reblock myself if I have to. Best wishes. ++Lar: t/c 03:50, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I was helping some folks do article rescue on this article, but it seems like things are going wrong at every step. <Sigh>

It seems like people were working on the page up to at least the last time I looked. They may have left more messages for me on the talk page too.

Could you please undelete the page and move it into my userspace, as ~requested in the AFD?

I'd like to see if we can work on it so that it meets notability criteria, and then put it back in mainspace.

Thanks in advance!

The false positives page for the abuse filter has a report on filter 9. Apparently it tripped when someone wrote about a person being gay. They were warned, then the edit was disallowed, then they were warned again. If it can't separate between abuse and valid uses, the filter can't be set to disallow. Please visit the page and address the issue. - Mgm|(talk) 10:45, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

I just replied to you there before I saw the orange banner. Odd timing. BJTalk 10:46, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
