Michelle Chang

Thank you for saving her article. Yeah, it seems any Native American character in video games is bound to get tons of coverage.

Speaking of Native American characters, what do you think of Nightwolf from Mortal Kombat? He was recently merged from AFD result, due to him being deemed to not have enough coverage. But surely, there must be more beyond what has been cited there? MoonJet (talk) 11:38, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

I was thinking of looking at Nightwolf, but then I got bored and started working on esoteric GBA port articles. My suggestion is to search with these parameters:
  • site:archive.org "Nightwolf" "Mortal Kombat"
  • site:.edu "Nightwolf" "Mortal Kombat"
  • intitle: "Nightwolf" intext: "Mortal Kombat"

You can also add "Native" or "Indigenous" in quotes in any of the searches just in case you want to guarantee you don't miss anything potentially relevant to that. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 11:41, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

Anyway, I completely agree with you that the recent AFDs are excessive. I get the fighting game character articles have been in need of a clean up, but just because you see something you don't think appears to be notable, doesn't mean you need to AFD it right away.
As for Nightwolf, those are some good suggestions I never thought of. I'll have to try it.
And speaking of Michelle Chang, I'm think of trying to get her successor Julia Chang to GA. I haven't done a GA in a while.
One more thing: I'm not sure if you remember me, but I used to edit under Kokoro20 (I remember you from your Abryn account). I admit, I actually helped Niemti in some articles back in the day, back when you could establish notability just by sticking a few listicles in the article. Looking back, Niemti did make a mess of things, but at the same time, I don't think all the recent merges are the answer either. We need more of a middle ground. MoonJet (talk) 04:20, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

City Escape

Hey again. I would like to let you know that I have your back on this. I don't agree that City Escape should be merged back into Sonic Adventure 2 either. But the moment I noticed you created the article, I knew it would be challenged, considering the standards the video game project tends to hold.

Another reason I wanted to contact you about this is that I've actually been sitting on a draft for Chemical Plant Zone for a whole. I have at least three sources in there focused on that level, and there's one or two more I could maybe add. What do you think? MoonJet (talk) 08:54, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

I don't like to be deflating you on this, but unfortunately I don't think that it would really work as an article. One big issue is that, at least at present, there's no info that delves into the creation of the level. Another issue is that, while there are articles that talk about Chemical Plant Zone as the main subject discuss it only in tandem with the game. So, for instance, the Sonic Mania reveal is more a news story about Sonic Mania than it is about Chemical Plant Zone. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 10:31, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
To be fair, the draft is not yet complete. I have more sourcing yet to add. Once I do add them, I'll let you know. Though, it could be a while, since all my Wikipedia focus lately has been on fighting game character articles, due to this AFD surge. MoonJet (talk) 22:25, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

RE: Closure of the Nintendo Switch Lite merge discussion

I'd like to give a reminder that per WP:BADNAC and WP:NACINV, "a non-admin closure is not appropriate" when "the non-admin has demonstrated a potential conflict of interest [...] by having expressed an opinion in the discussion". From what I recall, I have only ever closed discussions in this way when the consensus was unanimous, which in this discussion it was not. In the interest of not getting into any edit wars, I'd like to respectfully request you reopen it, and if it must be closed, utilize Wikipedia:Closure requests instead. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 05:20, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

I mean, you didn't complain when I closed Controversy over the use of Manchester Cathedral in Resistance: Fall of Man as merge. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 05:21, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
In that case, the closure could be interpreted as a withdraw of your oppose !vote, making the consensus completely unanimous and WP:SNOW in favor of merge. I don't think that was a similar situation. If it had been an involved merge voter doing the close instead, I may have raised more of an objection. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 05:23, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
In that case, I'll be sure to reopen The Nier Automata Church discussion as well. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 05:24, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
As you had expressed support for merge in the discussion, I would agree. I also think the closure of it may have been a bit premature given the lack of consensus thus far. If an uninvolved editor doesn't close it in a week or two I will go and request closure. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 05:35, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

Deletion of "William David Volk"

Saw this on the deletion discussion: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/William David Volk

Plenty of hits in Crypto blogs or websites, which seem associated with him; this is typical of them [1]. Anything crypto is a huge red flag. This in the IBT [2] is about all there is, and it's an iffy source. Oaktree b (talk) 19:05, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

Yes, he directed the development of Shiba Eternity which is a mobile game with no crypto or NFT's. It's on Apple and Google's app stores. Honestly at his age (66?) getting any position in the age biased video game industry is a difficult thing.

Anyway, his main activity now relates to his own company and mobile games he produces. See [1]https://AnagramQuest.com/ VideoGameVet (talk) 03:53, 27 June 2023 (UTC)

On 28 June 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars (2002 video game), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The Naoto criticism

The problem with the criticism page is that - there was way too much in the weight of 'Naoto's story is transphobic'. The point of a reception page is to have the overall consensus be represented with a few notable criticisms. All the random blogs added do not tip the scale that way, it makes it seem like the article wants you to think a certain way. This isn't a 'up to interpretation' thing.

This doesn't come from people lashing out about the idea of a character being trans. It's more that these specific shallow criticisms are tired and do not reflect most people. It's worth making a mention to it once or twice (as was done), not a whole paragraph of writers that have gotten torn apart 2603:7080:A5F0:8C50:4825:A424:2B82:11F0 (talk) 18:24, 18 July 2023 (UTC)

rollback

Hi Cukie Gherkin. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle or RedWarn.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Beeblebrox (talk) 18:52, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Cukie Gherkin,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Good article reviews

Hi Cutkie Gherkin, I just came across your GA review at Talk:Voltorb/GA1. Good Article reviews should inform both the nominator and other editors looking at the page as to how the article meets the GACR. The Voltorb GAN does not make this clear. Would you be able to expand upon your thoughts there as to how the article meets each of the GACR, including noting which sources were checked for plagiarism and OR? Thanks for your participation in GAN, CMD (talk) 05:56, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

@Chipmunkdavis: Aside from doing a plagiarism checker on the article, I also verified that content in the article was adequately summarized without merely rehashing what was said. Links checked include [2], [3], and [4], all of which are not reproduced, but more importantly, are written in such a way that satisfies that the article is sufficiently original. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 06:15, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, can you add that at Talk:Voltorb/GA1? Best, CMD (talk) 06:30, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

Mr. Mime

The text in the article Mr. Mime literally says "Created by Ken Sugimori". Quit the OR. Dimadick (talk) 01:49, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

@Dimadick: For someone on their talk page who argued that we should assume that Sugimori designed any Pokemon where a creator is not listed, I would advise against baselessly accusing people of violating WP:OR. That portion of the Mr. Mime article was from an outdated version where the article erroneously attributed the creation of all Pokemon to Sugimori, and no sources in the article claim that he did.
If you intend to continue editing Wikipedia, I would strongly recommend you be more careful with your editing, and be mindful of how you speak to people. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 02:09, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Input needed

Hey, since you've been bringing back character articles lately, I'm asking for your input on my draft at User:MoonJet/Josie Rizal. As you probably know, Josie Rizal was just in AFD, and closed as merge. However, I've done more searching after the AFD, and quickly found more sources (including a few that were published after 2015), most of which I've added to the draft. Here's a comparison between the article that was merged, and my current draft. I would go bold and restore it myself, but I want to try and prevent another needless, knee-jerk AFD.

I think we could take the Sarah Bryant approach here. But first, I'm asking for input from a few editors that contribute to video game character articles. MoonJet (talk) 17:27, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

I'm a little busy at the moment, can you highlight the sources you added so I can look them over? @MoonJet: - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 17:32, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Sure. Here are all the sources I've added to my draft after the merge:
https://www.vice.com/en/article/gypgz7/tekken-7-celebrates-ethnicities-and-martial-arts-from-around-the-world
https://thegame-onemega.com/looking-back-at-josie-rizal-tekkens-very-own-filipino-fighter/
https://nolisoli.ph/53119/theres-a-game-where-you-can-play-as-a-revenge-seeking-resurrected-andres-bonifacio-zacosta-20181130/
https://www.gamesradar.com/how-multicultural-characters-can-make-better-games-everyone/
https://nylonmanila.com/filipino-characters-video-games/ MoonJet (talk) 18:37, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
My inclination is that, should The Game, Nolisoli, and Nylon Manila be usable (which they seem like they may be), this would be adequate to show sustained coverage. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 18:53, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
That said, I recommend letting the draft cook until she's in Tekken 8, just to see if that doesn't help strengthen its sourcing. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 19:17, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Nylon Manila is the Filipino version of Nylon. Nolisoli is a subsidiary of Inquirer.net. The Game is magazine with an established staff team and a privacy policy, so I assumed it's usable. Plus, there's no guarantee she'll even be in Tekken 8 at all. MoonJet (talk) 19:49, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Character reception

What methods do you use for searching for character reception? I've been trying to find some decent coverage, but I never find more than one or two good sources for a character. QuicoleJR (talk) 16:55, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

House of Ashes FAC

Hey, since you were the one who did the GA review for The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes, I was wondering if you'd be interested in having another look at it now that it has been nominated for FAC? No big deal if you don't, asking just in case. -- ZooBlazer 21:26, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

I am interested, but FACs are pretty exhausting, and I literally just picked up three more GAs to review lol. Is there an upcoming deadline for the FAC being rejected? If not, I'd suggest watching the reviews of Leo Kliesen, Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge, and Mega Man X: Command Mission. I'll try to get to the FAC once these are done, but feel free to remind me, okay? - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 21:29, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
Is there an upcoming deadline for the FAC being rejected?
There are two pending reviewers, so hopefully no risk of it being archived soon, although it's been open for two weeks and I know the FAC coordinators usually leave a message after around three weeks if little progress is made. -- ZooBlazer 22:40, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
Aight. Well, I'm almost done with two of the reviews, and then I'm going to work on Mega Man X. Should be good to do an FAC review after that. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 22:42, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
Hey, I know you said you probably wouldn't have the time to finish a full review, but if you do have some spare time, could you do the image review instead? No worries if not. I'm sure someone will get to it eventually. -- ZooBlazer 08:38, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Tagging pages for speedy deletion

Hello, Cukie Gherkin,

You've been editing on Wikipedia for a couple of years now. Please learn how to use Twinkle to tag pages for speedy deletion, PRODs, AFDs, etc. And review Criteria for Speedy Deletion so you are very familiar with what the criteria for speedy deletion are, when they apply and to what namespaces apply. You can't just put "Delete" and insert your own reason for deleting a page. To delete one of your user pages, the correct codes are either CSD U1 or CSD G7. Things will be much easier when you understand CSD better. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 07:59, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

The article Dragon's Lair (Game Boy Color video game) you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Dragon's Lair (Game Boy Color video game) for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. Message delivered by ChristieBot, on behalf of Vrxces -- Vrxces (talk) 05:23, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

Aftermath editorial policy

You mentioned at the last VG/S discussion that you'd contacted Grayson about their editorial policy. Do you still have that line of communication open? It seems that a number of commenters are withholding support contingent on that editorial policy, which they obviously have, getting published somewhere on the site. New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Cukie Gherkin,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
