Pronunciation help

As the most recent person to edit List of names in English with non-intuitive pronunciations, can you help me out by adding the correct IPA sigils for "Leintwardine"? I was right, he just won't stop. He already got to 1992 European Football Championship (squads) (although he did correct a spelling mistake), and is now gonna go through 1988 European Football Championship, Football World Cup 1990, Football World Cup 1986 (He's now User:85.165.212.241). Intersting that this user is a nusuance on European football pages. He is also causing problems on the athletics pages as he trys to reformatt result tables. He is a mess (leaves pages in disarray) and has NEVER responded to pleas to discuss his changes (adds flags, changes name spellings and removes results). Texas Rangers

I wonder if you're going to write something about how the Texas Rangers have been stealing signs and relaying them to the Ranger's batters via the scoreboard? It must be true, because a White Sox pitcher complained about it, and that's one team that never whines about anything, right? And it helps explain why the Rangers are 12 games in front in their division. Oh, wait, they're not 12 games in front, their 12 games behind. About what you changed: my idea was to give in the field playername the name that the player wears on his shirt. Category:Mexican baseball players and Category:Japanese baseball players

You created the categories Category:Mexican baseball players and Category:Japanese baseball players a while back. Are these supposed to be people from Mexico or Japan that play baseball? Or are they supposed to be people who played baseball in a Mexican League or Japanese League? The Mexican one looks like mostly native Mexicans except for Julio Franco. Hi there. I see you're making college basketball categories, which I was going to start on after I finished up over at category:College football teams. So this is cool. I do have a recommendation, though, that you not split the categories between women and men's teams, even at double-barrelled powerhouses like UConn. You'll create the precedent that every school with a moderately good men and women's team will have two categories (Duke, Stanford, etc.), and thus, for example, nearly every arena will have two categories. Besides, no other category is separated by gender, so Ann Meyers shows up the other Category:UCLA basketball players (which I just recommended for renaming). I think people are smart enough to tell Sue Bird from Emeka Okefor without having it spelled out like this. (By the way, Birdie plays for my champion Seattle Storm, of which I am a season ticket holder. So I definitely want the women represented, just not in separated categories.) Done. Couple of notes: When you give a player a category, I think you should delete them from Category:College basketball players. Also, try to put non-American players into an appropriate category like Category:Nigerian basketball players; they should already have a category under Category:Sportspeople by nationality, though you may have to create some.--Mike Selinker 06:48, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

I just had a horrible realization that makes everything I said before meaningless. I was thinking about this with UConn, and then I remembered that unlike the Huskies, about half of the schools' women's programs put the word "Lady" in front of their name, as with the "Tennessee Lady Vols". These women would not belong under "Tennessee Volunteers basketball players". So they need to be split in those cases, so they might as well be split in all of them. Well, that debate ended with no consensus. So I think we should go with your plan of how you have the Tennessee category structured. You'll likely need to make women's categories for UCLA, Stanford, Duke, Penn State, Notre Dame, Houston, LSU, Minnesota, Texas, and maybe a couple of others. Otherwise, you can probably leave your men's basketball categories as just basketball. Someday they may all come up for renaming, but I wouldn't worry about it for now.--Mike Selinker 19:53, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Hierarchy question: So let's say you have the categories for La Tech b-ball, La Tech men's b-ball, and La Tech women's b-ball (and wow, are those two team names different, but I digress). I'm pretty sure that only the b-ball category needs to feed into the university's category, since the men's and women's both feed into the b-ball category. I guess that wasn't much of a question, more of a statement. Anyway, I would make sure they fed in that hierarchy. Good stuff overall, and I'll make some more when I finish with football. Also, which is the more correct model, in your opinion: The UConn model, where you split up men and women with the same team name, or the Duke model, where men and women with the same team name are under the same category? Correct name for an individual retirement "account" really is "account"

Dear fellow editors: One hates to nit pick, but in the article on Individual Retirement Accounts, the statement that the "umbrella" term for the concept is legally Individual Retirement Arrangement instead of account is simply incorrect. The individual retirement account was created by amendments to the Internal Revenue Code made by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), which enacted (among other things) Internal Revenue Code sections 219 and 408 relating to IRAs. Subsection (a) of section 408 defines the term "individual retirement account" and subsection (b) defines the term "individual retirement annuity." An individual retirement account and an individual retirement annuity are two different but related legal concepts under the Internal Revenue Code, and both terms are directly from the statute itself.

IR "accounts" and IR "annuities" are collectively referred to as "individual retirement plans". See Internal Revenue Code section 7701(a)(37).

From a technical legal standpoint, it is therefore incorrect to say that the use of the word "account" is incorrect, as account is the term actually used in the law itself. I'm not sure where the editor who wrote otherwise obtained his or her information, but I invite everybody to look up the actual statute and make the appropriate change in the article. • I've merged the information from two articles on the same person, and put it in both places—Christopher Birchall and Chris Birchall. However, I'd like to get some consensus on which direction to make the move. Background: Birchall is a football (soccer) player, born in England and playing his club football there for Port Vale F.C., but representing Trinidad and Tobago internationally. I looked at the official sites of Port Vale and the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (the T&T national federation that governs the national team), and they each call him a different name. Baseball on Wikicities

I have trimmed it down for reasons having nothing to do with whether you got it right or not. I put the info on Talk:Pancho Gonzales, whose article has it the other way around. IMO the usual English spelling should govern the title, but article should be clear in any case abt how his family spelled it. Can you provide verification?

Sports in the United States by city CFR

Hi, thanks for the note. Your idea is an interesting one, and I'm not sure which way would be the best option. My first inclination is to omit the state names for those two, in the interest of keeping the category names as concise as possible. On the other hand, leaving out the state names could be confusing for the geographically challenged. There is one other subcategory of Category:Lansing, Michigan, and it does not use the state name, so perhaps there's no need for it in the sports category. College Station is a trickier call, since it's the only subcategory. Maybe it would be best to stick with the "disambiguate only when necessary" rule of thumb in this case. - EurekaLott 17:29, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Older NCAA Brackets

I'm looking at writing a script to bring in historical NCAA tournament results, ala the 2005 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament article that you created. I haven't been able to locate any Wikiproject that this would fit under, so since you appear to have done most of the work on this article, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the formatting of the pages or the information that they should include. Information I'd like to include:

• Dates
• Winning team, and results of championship game
• Locations of the regionals and final four
• Complete bracket, with results

Great points -- I pulled in a list of D-I universities from List of NCAA Division I Institutions, which seems to have greatly improved the linking situation greatly. The User:Dantheox/NCAA page has been updated. I'll think about ways to include the third-place game, regional third place games, and possibly the play-in game that started a few years back. The third-place games are a bit frustrating, since the "Teams" section on my sample page is based on the assumption that every team but the champion loses their last game.

Also a good point. I can hard-code those name changes you mentioned into my scripts, but at some point, I feel like it's going to be better to just put these pages up and let the Wikipedians do their magic. In particular, I think getting them up and linked in before the NCAA tournament starts is a must. There's no doubt what time of year these pages will get the most attention. I did some work to address the issues you raised, and I've uploaded/linked in several sample tournament pages. See 1946 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, which has an infobox at the bottom. I added one tourney page for each full decade of the NCAA Tournament. Just for the record, I did find an upload tool at User:KeithTyler/mwpush.pl, in case you're ever asked again =) I'm uploading the tourneys as I write this. Hopefully after this much tweaking, there will be few enough incorrect links that manual tweaking won't be particularly onerous. Tournaments all up!

I just finished uploading the last tournament! There are now pages for 1939-2008, and there's an infobox on each linking to every other tournament. I'm sure there are still a few linking errors, so I'll most likely have to run AWB over these pages in a while. Hey, Dale. I just wanted to let you know that one sub-regional in the women's tournament is in Rosemont, Illinois, where Allstate Arena is located, not Chicago (even though it is listed as the Chicago subregional). Also, the preferred use of the University of Southern California is either "Southern Cal" or "Southern California", not "USC" as this may incur confusion with the University of South Carolina, which also has the initals USC. re: Barnstar

Thanks for the barnstar! The tourney pages seem to have gone over fairly well, though I have to say, I'm amazed at the amount of vandalism I've seen on them. In the future, I'm looking to improve the Teams/Locations sections, to bring them more in line with the way that the 2006 tournament looks. Do you know where the small team/conference logos in the Team listings on that page come from? Are there any plans to have a link to the 2006 NCAA page on the "In the News" section of the main page tomorrow? It seems completely appropriate, and to my knowledge at least, there haven't been any NCAA Basketball news stories on the main page yet. Chapions League 06/07

Hi. I've corrected some your changes. Romania definitely do not have two teams in the CL. The points they made this season do not determine the number of teams COMPETING in the next season, but rather QUALIFYING DURING the next season for the season after the next. Romania is therefore only going to have two teams in the CL in 07/08.

For 06/07, the points made until the end of 04/05 relevant (here is a table of the points made 00/01 to 04/05: http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/data/method3/crank2005.html). This guarantees Belgium AND Scotland a place in the group stage. They will lose the places only in the season after that.

Manmohan Singh

Hi. I saw a comment that you had made on the talk page of Manmohan Singh a few days back. Sorry for the delay in response - we must be ignoring our own prime minister! I am not an expert in names especially Sikh names, but I think the whole thing has to do with respect. Calling Manmohan Singh as Manmohan everytime is a bit disrespectful. It should be just Singh or Mr. Singh. It would be like calling George Bush as George in the entire article. As for the Indian cricket team, I think it must have something to do with their age - all of them are young, some in their 20s. So they wouldn't mind if called by their first names. Also it may have to do with the commentators always calling them by their first names. Anyways, thanks for the comment. If you are interested in some India related topics I can give you some quick links. Also, you should consider archiving your talk page before it gets too long.
